Remember if you have any magic news drop me a line: AW@Alan-Watson.com -------------------------------------------- 2. 3rd Edition Who’s Who In Magic Just Released -------------------------------------------- Message by Chris Wasshuber New updated edition. 3rd edition 2009; 849 pages. To purchase this EBook go to: http://www.lybrary.com/whos-magic-p-17829.html Customers of this EBook will receive updates free of charge. One can therefore better characterize this product as a life-time subscription to an ever improving and expanding Who's Who in Magic. This biographical guide lists over 5,500 men and women associated with the art of conjuring from earliest recorded times to the present: performers, inventors, writers, teachers, dealers, manufacturers, publishers, collectors, historians, and showmen of magic. Several are included from the so-called allied arts of magic. Thus it gives those whose deceptions or careers directly influenced magicians, such as pseudo-psychics and card sharps; and those who share many deceptive methods with magicians, such as escapologists, mentalists, and stage pickpockets and hypnotists. Ventriloquists, although masters of misdirection, are (with few exceptions) included only if they were also magicians. Even Houdini's trained escape-artist dog, Bobby, gets an entry. The focus is on all who were popular professionals (internationally, in their own countries, or regionally), amateur magicians' magicians, or otherwise influential in magic. As such, this eBook has more than four times the number of biographical entries as the next most nearly comprehensive magical reference book, Stenman's admirable Swedish-language encyclopedia published four decades ago. The present work, although a useful reference in itself, is particularly designed as a companion and cross-reference to Bart's The Encyclopedic Dictionary of Magic. Go to: http://www.lybrary.com/encyclopedic-dictionary-magic-p-441.html?osCsid=1ad2f1de6056dce1b7f9354ad17d8981 Only personal and career highlights are given, although many of these can be found enlarged upon in the appendices. For example, when a person's clubs, awards, venues, or film or magazine appearances are named, fuller information usually may be found in the appropriate appendix. For further details and anecdotes, Bart has indicated at the end of each entry the main references by abbreviation or acronym, each keyed to the Bibliography. These are supplementary references and are neither necessarily nor even usually his only sources. Each entry gives, when known, the following information: full name, stage or pen name, place and country of birth, dates of birth and death (or, when not available, dates that they "flourished", that is, the decades in which they are known to have performed or published), when and who or what inspired them to take up magic, when and how they learned, their public debut, status in magic (pro, semi-pro, or amateur and, if not pro, their non-magical occupation given), specialties, which countries or major venues they played, major awards, their inventions, the fact that they have authored books or booklets or articles on magic, and any published memoirs, autobiographies, or biographies. Additionally, the entries report surviving cinema-film, video-tape, and audio-tape records of their performances or lectures. Extensive appendices cover lists of: Associations and Conventions Awards, Prizes and Trophies Venues Dealers, Publishers & Manufacturers Motion Pictures Magicians in Fiction Magic and Magicians in Radio Drama Periodicals This who's who is not a directory and therefore no contact information for the various people, companies and organizations is given. However, for a one-time fee individuals ($25), organizations ($100) and businesses ($100) can have their contact information listed as part of their entry in the EBook. Customers of this EBook will receive updates free of charge. One can therefore better characterize this product as a life-time subscription to an ever improving and expanding Who's Who in magic. -------------------------------------------- 3. Vanni Pule’ Turned 60 -------------------------------------------- Message by Chris Gove - Malta Maltese magician Vanni Pule’ turned 60 recently and he celebrated a farewell to his fifties with a big party for family, friends, magicians and colleagues. I was lucky to be one of the guests and we enjoyed an evening of eating, drinking and dancing with a magic touch. Even the cake was in the shape of Steinmeyer’s Modern Art illusion with icing playing cards, top hat, dice and a magic wand decorating the base. Vanni requested his guests, instead of giving him presents, to make a donation to the Child Cancer Foundation for which the sum of €3,500 was collected. -------------------------------------------- 4. Life as a Magical Partner - #120 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com My wife and I have been talking lately about the relationship we both play in the magic we present. It is a very unique relationship and one in which we asked ourselves what made us so different. As we talked we realized that the role my wife plays is not so much an assistant as it is something we refer to as a Magical Partner. A magical partner is a term that I have not often heard used that often. It is a term that I feel very strongly about. To me a magical partner is a person, male or female, who not only assists a magician but also plays an intricate role in the shows and performances. They are able to discuss specific issues with each other, such as performing, financial, costuming and choreography, how to set up the show etc. without feeling like their ideas do not count or have meaning. These items are just the tip of the iceberg as to what you as a magical partner can take part in. A magical partner to me is much more than being just an assistant. The terms I hear people use most often are assistant, box jumper and stage hand, however I rarely hear the term magical partner. If you want to take a more active role in magic, then maybe becoming a magical partner is for you.  As a magical partner you are sharing the magic with each other and you feel like you are part of a team. Along with assisting a magician a magical partner can help in many different ways both on stage and off. You are a very important part of who they are, what they do, and their role in the magic community. Some of the ways your role as a partner can help are, the creative process, the marketing, loading and unloading of props, setting up the show and more. Working alongside my wife Kelly, we both share equally in the responsibilities and tasks that make our show what it is. We do many of the things listed above together, and you as a magical partner can as well. First, helping with the creative process can take on many forms. By helping with the creative process you can help each other to come up with ideas for an act, which works, what doesn’t work, and how to sequence certain acts or the best way to perform an illusion. It also gives a second set of eyes to a routine that may or may not be right. You can help each other creatively by watching videos, reading books or lecture notes, and even seeing live performances for ideas. For example, recently Kelly was watching a video on stage movement and choreography, and she saw a move that she felt would be appropriate for our sword basket illusion. She called me over and we watched it together, and then decided to work on the move together to see if it would work for us. This is just one example of how your role as a magical partner can help with the creative process of magic. Another way the magical partner can help is with the marketing. By this I mean, both of you can help research where you might want to perform, take phone calls, send out press releases, mail the promotional packets, keep up the database, emails, book the shows and gather as much information as you can. Everyone knows that to run a successful magic business there is an awful lot that takes place off the stage.  It is one reason why they call it “show business”. Often people are not aware of just how much is involved in the running of a magic business when you are not performing. If you are involved in a magical partnership, the roles and responsibilities listed above are divided equally. You are both working together as a team to help things run smoothly, and for the ultimate success of the business. Finally, when you both arrive or leave the venue or event, while either of you may be busy meeting with the client, the other person can help get things moving by unloading or loading the items into/from your vehicle, and begin to either set them up or break down. This saves time especially if you are back to back with another entertainer or band, like at a big festival or fair. By doing this, it helps both of you feel less rushed. Sometimes, you or your partner may also need to run the sound. Kelly does this for me and even when I decide to change a routine mid show, Kelly knows what music to play as she knows the show because she is an equal part in everything. If you know the show, you can also help by setting up the show alongside each other. Either of you should know what tricks, illusions and acts you both will be doing. If you are performing at a theater, both of you can also strike the stage, check out the lighting and do sound checks - just some of the things you can do. Knowing the show is a huge advantage to being a magical partner. In conclusion, your role as a magical partner is much more than just being a magician’s assistant. By doing some or all of the above, you feel like you are an equal partner, and know that you help make the show and the business a success. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. I would like to let everyone know that I just released a NEW book and E-Book to the magic Community. "Blue and Gold! Cruising With Paul Romhany #70 -------------------------------------------- Message from Paul Romhany (NZ) My travels this week take me to Vancouver Canada where we are relaxing for a week prior to flying home to Shediac. It's been a very hectic week catching up with fellow magicians - all too short of a visit I'm afraid. I was privy to some upcoming effects by Matthew Johnson and Christopher Taylor. All I am going to say is that it is one of the best effects I've seen in many years!! Keep your eyes open in a few months for something that will rock the magic world. I was also able to catch up with creative consultant Andrew Gerard.  Andrew, as most of you will know, is a consultant for Chris Angel, David Blaine and now Keith Barry. Andrew gave me a sneak preview in to his new pilot for his own show - it was one of the best 'non' magic shows I've seen.  When the networks run with it, it's going to make him a huge star in the public domain. I'm very happy for him and he deserves his success. I get at least a hundred emails a week from magicians asking different types of questions about magic, and the most asked question is from magicians who are thinking of making the move from part time to full time, or those who want to take their magic to the next level. I thought this week I'd share the advice I offer them in an email I send out. Over the next few weeks I will share with you what I firmly believe to be the keys to being a successful magician. This is the advice I share with all my readers of my BLOG - over 50 thousand now and am happy to pass on to readers of the ezine. Secrets of a Successful Magician - Part 1 What makes a Successful Magician? Is it money, fame, the face you won a flash sports car - or is it that you can make a good living and have a healthy life style by doing something you love so much? We all have different ideas of what success is. I think everybody has the dream of being successful. We want to be successful in life, in our jobs, in a relationship - and also our passion - MAGIC. Being successful in magic is a challenge, and most people believe that they just can't achieve great success because they don't have what it takes or because they're not educated enough. Understand that success is an inside job. It comes from within. I hear complaints from magicians who say they can't achieve the success they want because luck isn't on their side, or they weren't born successful, or that they are too poor to think about being something else. Let me tell you that you don't need these things to be successful - what you need is faith. Faith in yourself that you will be successful, faith that you have what it takes to make it to the top! If you don't believe in yourself, who else will believe in you. This has been my secret of my own personal success since I was eight years old and wanted to be a magician! Look at the most successful entertainers in the world - what do they all have in common? They all have the belief in themselves that they will make it to the top. They never accepted a NO for an answer. Nothing ever stopped them, slowed down maybe, but never stopped them. Many people will say this is all fine and dandy in print, but how can I have faith? Perhaps you have made a few of the achievements you set out with, but they seemed to have stopped. The first thing you need to understand is that you do need to make an effort. You will need consistence in your doings. You need to make an effort. If you don't give consistent efforts, you'll just never get what you expect. The main point it to believe that you can be successful and you will indeed. One of the best ways is to use Affirmations. You just keep repeating to yourself that you are a successful person. Never use negative forms in your affirmations. Instead of saying, I will not fail in anything anymore. Say, I will succeed in everything I'm undertaking. I'm here to tell you that affirmations really work. You also need to be repetitive in your affirmations. Say them at least 20 times a day, for several days until they sink in. Remember, consistency! The longer you do it - the better the results. -------------------------------------------- 7. Stars Of Tomorrow Show -------------------------------------------- Message by George Schindler S.A.M. My Performing Experience In China -------------------------------------------- Message by Henry Evans Magic is a universal language. I had a recent experience which proved it. I had the pleasure to perform in a tour of close-up shows in China together with Lennart Green, Rocco, Shoot Ogawa and Mago Migue. It was, by far, one of the best professional experiences I have ever had. The producers of the tour and all people involved, including the audiences, have treated us with such a respect it is hard to forget. It is truly moving to see how close up magic can be raised to an excellent level if the project is well done. A show is not only made by the artists. There are uncountable details people do not often see, but which are crucial for a good result. Let’s begin naming the advertising of the shows. Every time we would arrive in a city there was a giant flag with a welcome message for the magicians to that place in particular, with every name written in big letters. All hotels were of the best possible quality. The theaters were incredible, not only because of their equipment and technology, also the esthetics in and outside. Apart from all these facts, which are nonetheless worth being said because it is not always like this, there are a couple of things people don’t notice like, for example, having comfortable dressing rooms with all kinds of food and drinks, also pianos (we realised many of us play the piano so it was a lot of fun). All these things did a lot for a better performance on stage of all of us. Small details which make a big difference. While walking in the streets people would always say welcome to China, and this politeness we noticed was then confirmed on stage, when we could see audience’s reactions. They were a very expressive crowd, letting themselves be amazed, no matter what city we performed at. The press conference in Beijing made me feel a Rolling Stone that was the magnitude of it. We answered questions and made some magic in front of dozens of flashes. I am happy to see how close-up magic can be done with great results if there is common sense, effort in every detail, a good team of producers and good chemistry amongst the magicians (one of the most important things I got from this trip). We did 15 shows for an audience of 1200 in each theatre, apart from TV shows with the largest audiences I have ever heard of! In one of them I was told the show had been watched by three times the population of Argentina, which has 40 million people. I am very grateful to Mr. Lin and Mr. Lu for having thought of me to be part of this tour, an amazing experience I will never forget. That predicts FISM will be a big success!!! -------------------------------------------- 13. MagoMigue Finishs Tour In Many Cities Of China -------------------------------------------- Message from Lu Dinggang-Ryan (China) The magician MagoMigue finished the performing tour in many cities of China. MagoMigue who comes from Granada? Henry Evans, Shoot Ogawa? Lennart Green and Rocco Silano promoted FISM2009 which will be held in Beijing in July. During one month, they did magic tricks in all the streets and lanes of Beijing. Like the Beatles, the five world champions have thousands of fans. They took part in various TV shows, gave signatures and were asked to be taken photos like real stars. All of these are for promoting FISM2009 which will be held in Beijing from July 26th to 31st. “They are so enthusiastic, just like the Andalusian.” MagoMigue, the master of magic said. The hospitality and kindness of Chinese people left a deep impression on him. From March 30th to April 20th, MagoMigue and his friends went on a performing tour in the most famous cities of China, such as Shanghai, Dongguan, Shenzhen, Zhengzhou, Wuhan and Beijing. Here they feel themselves like members of the Beatles who come from Liverpool. “One is McCartney, the other is Harrison,” he said, “people’s passion is really incredible”. Although Chinese people are much more familiar with another kind of magic, for example, acrobatics or magic with dancing and stage effect, China, the Asian country opens its arms to the five magicians from different countries. “For Chinese people, this is the first time for them to get the opportunity to know this kind of magic?”MagoMigue said?“but it’s just a part of the show.” China will hold FISM2009 in coming July which is no less a gathering than Academy Award ceremony. More than 2000 registrants, including nearly 200 from Spain will come China for the event. More than 100 magicians will compete on the same stage for the new world champion. Although both Granada and Vienna bid for FISM2009, China successfully won the bid to host FISM2009 in Stockholm three years ago. The new world champions will be born here, they will offer all kinds of magic including close-up magic, stage magic, manipulation, card magic, original magic and so on. MagoMigue had won two championships in FISM, this time he will give magic lectures instead of taking part in the competition. With other four magicians, they totally provided the audience with 22 fantastic shows. One of these programs made its first appearance and will be shown in the HocusPocus Festival held in November. During performances, they conjured coins out of cards within few seconds, copied the pattern of cards by toothbrush or changed the cards’ color in a split second. “I never expect that I can travel around the world by one pack of cards.” but he made it without any limitation. As MagoMigue  said?”the charm of the magic is that it transcends the limitation of languages.” About FISM2009 Besides MagoMigue, there are many other famous magicians being invited to perform in FISM2009. They are Rick Merrill, Pilou, Mac King, Victor Voitko, Henry Evans, Juan Tamaríz, Topas, David Williamson, Shoot Ogawa, Lennart Green, Shintaron Fuijiyama, I.Ma.Gi.A, Omar Pasha, Jorgos, Double Fantasy, Peter Marvey and David Sousa FISM is founded in 1948. It is the International body bringing together the world's leading magic societies and is held every three years. 2009 will be the 24th FISM, hosted by Beijing, China. More than 100 magicians from all over the world will compete on the same stage and give wonderful magic performances. -------------------------------------------- 14. 15th Annual 2-Day Magic Auction -------------------------------------------- Message from Larry McMechan Located at 210 Nation Ave. Eaton, O.45320 Preview May 22, 2009 Auction May 23 & 24, 2009 Starts 10:00 A.M.
