Lance Burton Broke A Bone In His Foot In Three Places -------------------------------------------- Message by Gabrielle Reid (US) You may have already heard this but Lance broke a bone in his foot in three places. He has 6 pins and a plate in it now and is resting for the next couple of weeks. We are scheduled to go back to work on June 2nd but will wait until Lance gets a clearance from his doctor. We had a planned vacation until then anyway. He is a true entertainer as he hurt it during the Elvis bird act and after the monster took a little minute to see if he could move his toes. He could so he proceeded with the show, in pain but the audience didn't know it. He did the entire show, we taped up his foot (not knowing it was broken) and he took some pain pills and got thru the show and gave the audience their money's worth. Not till the next day did anyone know it was broken. To me that is like the old entertainer story that you do the show no matter what. -------------------------------------------- 3. Yvonne Watson - Mayor Of St. Ives -------------------------------------------- Message by John Palfreyman (UK) One of our long standing members of British Ring Number 25 of The International Brotherhood of Magicians - Yvonne Watson - from Cornwall on Monday 18th May was made Mayor of St. Ives. I believe that this is the first time a "Lady" member of the British Ring has had this honour bestowed upon her. -------------------------------------------- 4. Remarkable Magic #96 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US) S.P. Lodge: the magician's magician. One of the true joys in the magic world is getting to meet some of the magicians who aren't interested in the commercial side of performing but just in the sheer love of the knowledge of magic. They have a great deal to offer and share. I first met S.P. Lodge in Sausalito in the mid-seventies when I was working at the Magic Cellar in San Francisco. He was living within about 3 miles of the houseboat that was home to the wonderful English philosopher Alan Watts during the 60s. S.P. was an enthusiastic fan of Arthur Murata, a magician who was frequently featured at the Cellar. He credits Arthur as his first influence and mentor in the magic world. Within a very short time S.P. became a magical 'purist' of the first order. After he moved to Los Angeles he studied the masters acquiring a special affinity for the sleight of hand that Earl Nelson performed at the Magic Castle. One thing I have never done in magic is to become a collector and sometimes I regret this. I recently took the time to look at Lodge's autograph book and was amazed at the range of magical giants that had taken the time to pay tribute to his singular and often underrated talents as a magical thinker and creator. I was highly envious as I read the warm personal notes from magicians such as Dai Vernon, Bruce Cervon, Shimada, Lance Burton, Max Maven, Jay Marshall and other performers of note. I realized the huge impact that a 'theoretical' magician can have on his performing contemporaries and was truly impressed. While never a regular performer at the Castle, due to a physical handicap, Lodge explored an area of magic that was rather unique in its specificity. S.P. was only interested in moves and not the tricks that could be created from them. His business card read 'Moves in Magic,' this special focus that was made possible by an independent standing and his substantial financial security. S.P. has a disdain for the more commercial forms of magical entertainment that did much to forge his relationship with Dai Vernon. Neither one of the two were fans of comedy magic and both considered it an unnecessary alliance that could at best be accepted but never fully embraced. In spite of my status as a 'died in the wool' comedy magician they were both very supportive of me and I really appreciated it. They each gave me tips and advice that helped me immensely. Dai once suggested a joke for my act that I use to this very day, not just because of the laugh it gets but because of whom it was that gave it to me. On a recent trip to New Zealand S.P. made the acquaintance of master mentalist Richard Webster who jokingly referred to him as E.S.P. Lodge. Strangely enough this was at a time when S.P. was becoming very fascinated in the field of mental magic. Lodge had recently read a comment by Max Mavin, which stated that mentalism was not just, 'magic in cerebral drag.' S.P. disagreed, deciding that mentalism was indeed magic in 'cerebral drag' and that he loved it all the more because of it! Max has also stated that mentalism is magic without the tricks and it was this concept that caused Lodge to abandon his single minded love of sleight of hand and embrace this new field of magical endeavor. While S.P. is not well known to the majority of magicians he is well worth seeking out at the Castle. Drink a glass of sake with him, and you will have the opportunity to pick his singularly unique magical brain. Working Scout Events All Year - #119 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com I wanted to take the time to thank so many of you who have commented, bought and reviewed my new book on working the scout market. It is so very much appreciated. Many folks have sent emails asking if you can only work scout events during February and March. I would like to say that simply is not the case at all. Let me dive in a little bit on a specific HOT tip that can have you working scout events all year. The great thing about the scout market is that you do not have to limit yourself to working just the yearly banquet. There is a golden secret I would like to share with you that has tremendous value. It is something that can keep you working the market all year, provide a valued service and no one is doing it. Allow me to share the concept with you in hopes that it may open your own eyes to the possibilities. By contacting and talking with various Boy and Girl Scout Councils, I realized that both organizations have badges or awards that can be earned for doing and learning about magic. Sometimes these are referred to as merit badges but may be called different things in various scout councils. The key point is knowing that they do exist and that scouts can work towards earning this badge. If you are keyed into problem solving for your clients, then this raises a wonderful opportunity for you the entertainer. You have the ability to create a full scout program (meeting) for the scout packs or even Girl Scout troops. The idea here is to provide a full meeting for the pack or troop that you provide for them. You provide a 30 minute magic show followed by a teaching workshop and then end with a question and answer session. The beauty of this is that everything you do is helping the Scouts earn their magic badge or award. In the minds of the Scout Leaders and Councils, this has amazing power and benefit for them. It serves a purpose far greater than just entertainment alone. Now you are providing a service that empowers the Scouts and gets them working towards something they can feel good about. It also allows you to charge more for the service and gets you to perform all year long performing this program for various cub packs and Girl Scout troops in and around your area. I started doing this a few years ago and the Scout Councils simply love it. In fact I have even had Scout Councils team up and bring together many packs and troops together and make a full afternoon event just from my program alone. What you teach needs to be easy items with stuff around the house that also empowers instead of frustrating. I usually do a floating pencil effect and also jumping rubber bands are very easy to do and I can provide the props for the scouts to keep at next to nothing in cost. Both are tricks the kids can do with ease and gets them excited about magic. If I have large groups, I teach the effects to the Scout Leaders ahead of time and then have them assist me with the hands on portion of the teaching workshop. This is great to do because it gets the Leaders directly involved in the teaching of the Scouts and empowers them as well. Allow the Scouts to keep the items to take home with them. The question and answer part of the program brings the kids back to the front area as you talk briefly about the history of magic and the importance of keeping the secret, practice and entertainment value. You can then allow the scouts to ask questions that they may have and answer them for them. You then wrap up the program by thanking everyone. It is a great opportunity that no one is doing and can allow you to really tap into this market in your own area and work it all year. A quick call to your local Scout Council can gain you great information that you can use to build your own magic program that is geared at directly helping Scouts to earn their magic badge. I hope this gets you seeing the incredible value in how you can work scout events not only in the standard months. You can develop a show that is booked by many troops and packs all year and gain you great income in the process. I cover off on a lot more of this in the book and just wanted to share some of it with you all. Thanks again so much for your patronage and emails about the book. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. - I would like to let everyone know that I just released a NEW book and E-Book to the magic Community. "Blue and Gold! The Complete Guide to Working The Scout Market!" is now available as a soft cover printed book as well as an eBook download. Cruising With Paul Romhany #69 -------------------------------------------- Message from Paul Romhany (NZ) I just landed about an hour ago in to Vancouver, Canada from Sydney in Australia. Without a doubt, the worst flight I have ever been on due to weather. We had over three hours of horrific turbulence, so much so that there were two occasions where I thought we weren't going to make it. I have been flying around the world for over 20 years and without a doubt, this time was the worst. Apparently, the weather was so bad it made the New Zealand news, according to my parents email. I am so glad to be back on ground and have put a few plans of travel on hold - that's how much it bothered me. What a way to end a very busy two month season Down Under. Again, I want to publicly thank all the magicians in Australia and New Zealand who made me feel so welcome and attended my lectures. The amount of wonderful emails from old friends and new ones really made the trip worthwhile. I feel that if I can share some of my experiences and a few magic tricks along the way, and people can take something away then it's a great night. Having been isolated from magicians and the magic world for the past ten years, due to working on ships, it was a nice feeling coming back as a lecturer and performer. Over the past year I've been able to lecture in the UK, North America and Down Under. Before the year is out I will be bringing the lecture to Asia. Because magic is so diversified and everybody is at a different level, I tried to offer something for everybody. The magic effects I share are routines I use myself so they are real world working effects. I will keep this week's article short as I need to sleep, however will finish with one more horror story of flying that happened twelve years ago. I was working in Dubai and had to fly from Sydney. Half way there we got caught in a thunder and lightning storm and the plane was hit. It bumped around something terrible. I was actually asleep at the time but was woken by what I thought was a huge crash. I got such a shock that I literally jumped out of my seat and yelled @$%! (Replace with a swear word). My jumping and swearing scared the passengers more than the crash that they jumped at screamed at me yelling. Needless to say I wasn't popular on that flight. I must admit, that this three hour turbulence was worse than what I experience there. I never take sleeping tablets but took three when the turbulence started to knock myself out. It kind of worked - I think it numbed me a bit but there were grip marks on the arm rests next to me from holding so tight. I am on land now here in Vancouver for a week before flying back home - I can't wait to be in my own bed with our little cat and the BBQ going with our lobster - there's NO PLACE LIKE HOME Until next week Paul Romhany www.chaplinmagic.com -------------------------------------------- 7. Magic In The Movies -------------------------------------------- Message from Tim Ellis (Aust) Sue-Anne Webster spent a day on the set of the new Australian feature film by Nadia Tass, 'Love & Mortar'. Nadia is best known for her quirky films 'Malcolm', 'Rikky & Pete' and 'Mr Reliable'. She cast Sue-Anne as the magician who performs in the opening scene of the movie, set at a birthday party. As well as performing classics like the Linking Rings and the Floating Table, Sue-Anne also sawed Tim Ellis in half - but without the chainsaw, blood, or the PVC catsuit - (she saves that for the corporate shows!) 'Love & Mortar' should be released in cinemas early 2010. If you'd prefer to see Sue-Anne's sawing with all the trimmings... go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNz3d1TFSws -------------------------------------------- 8. Collectors Day At The Magic Circle -------------------------------------------- Message by Peter Lane (UK) Saturday 30th May 2009. It is not necessary to be a member of The Magic Circle, or even a collector, in order to attend Collectors Day. If you enjoy hearing about magicians and magic tricks of the past, you will enjoy Collectors Day. Dean Arnold will show some treasures from his collection, with particular emphasis on early mental magic. Will Houstoun will explain some 18th century card tricks and show how advanced the professional performers were at the time. Jasper Maskelyne is well known for his camouflage work during World War 2. Richard Stokes will tell us what he really did or did not do. Richard Evans will chronicle the career of Isaac Fawkes the most famous magician of the early 18th century. Peter Warlock is the subject of the final talk and his daughter Elizabeth and Mike Gancia will also demonstrate some of his tricks. Tickets for the day can be obtained from The Magic Circle. Tel 020 7387 2222. They cost £35 and include an excellent lunch. As the food has to be ordered in advance tickets are not for sale on the door. -------------------------------------------- 9. Judges For The Convention Contests For Nashville Needed -------------------------------------------- Message from MikeD Hello Folks, It is that time again. After a year off, the IBM Convention Contest is getting back in the saddle again. If you are going to Nashville, we could use your help. We need some judges for the IBM Stage or IBM Close-Up Contests. If you are going to be at the convention and can see your way clear to donate some of your valuable convention time to help us with the judging of the contest, please let me know. Do you prefer Stage or the Close-Up contests? I want to know what you would prefer to do and will work hard to get everyone into the spot they want. But I cannot guarantee that, so be aware that you may not be able to do the one you would most like. Also, if you are in any way connected to someone in one of the contests ... family, coach, close personal friend ... what ever... be sure to let me know that so that I will know where I absolutely **CANNOT** place you. Once I have the responses, I will contact you individually to let you know what assignments I have for you, the schedules and the like. Broken Wand - Morrell, Ronald George Richard -------------------------------------------- Message by Steve Walker (US) 13 May 2009. Late of Tempe. A one-off character who lived and died by his own code of eccentric behavior. He appeared to neither love nor respect anyone or anything except his late mother and his animals, in particular his much missed dog "Shadow" and his two cats "George " and " Mildred". Ron was a magician, a collector of strange and weird ephemera, an acerbic wit, a fanciful story teller and a much underrated and unfulfilled talent. Aged 63 years "If you can't think of anything nice to say about anyone .come and talk to me" He was however much admired for his unique sense of reality and will be sadly missed by his neighbors and many friends who are invited to attend the graveside ceremony for his funeral at Rookwood Cemetery, Lawn D on Tuesday May19th at 2-00pm. Celebrant Bob Goodfellow. In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated to the RSPCA. -------------------------------------------- 14. Calling All Harry Potters And Hermione Grangers -------------------------------------------- Message from Tim Ellis (Aust) The Australian Institute of Magic, has announced a nationwide search for young magicians under the age of 18 to take part in the very first Australian Junior Championships of Magic, to be held at The Melbourne Magic Festival in July. "This is a chance to take their first step on a magical journey," said Sue-Anne Webster, President of The Australian Institute of Magic. "If they do well here, they're on the path to representing Australia at The World Championships in 2012." The FISM World Championships is the Olympic Games of magic, a huge event with over 2,000 magicians from all over the world. It's held every three years in a different city and, from July 26-31 it will be held in Beijing, China, with over thirty Australians attending. Sue-Anne knows what she's talking about. Her husband, fellow magician Tim Ellis, has won two awards at the World Championships and is now internationally renowned. The Australian Junior Championships will offer two first prizes - Stage Magic Champion as well as Close Up Magic Champion. As well as titles, the winners will each receive $500 to spend at the famous Trick or Treat Magic Shop. Runners up will receive trophies and the audience will even get to vote for their favourite magician on the day. The Championships is held under the auspices of FISM (The Federation of International Magic Societies) and will be judged by members of The Australian Institute of Magic according to the FISM rules. Contestants will have 3 to 5 minutes to pull their best tricks out of their sleeves and they will be assessed on personality, creativity and magical skill. "We already have a lot of entrants," said Sue-Anne, "but I'm sure there are a lot of other budding Houdini's out there yet to be discovered." The Stage Championship will be held on Saturday July 4 at 3.30pm, and The Close Up Championship on Saturday July 11 at 3.30pm at The Northcote Town Hall. Steve Friess from the Las Vegas weekly just posted his "Top 10 Vegas Shows you Absolutely Have To See" and I placed #7 on the list. Mac King and myself were the only magicians to make the list, leaving off David Copperfield, Penn and Teller, Lance Burton, Steve Wyrick and Criss Angel. A New Irish Magic News Website -------------------------------------------- Message from Brendan Byrne I have started a not for profit website as a service to the Irish Magic Community. It would be great if you could include the following in your next issue. A new Irish magic news website has just been launched by enterprising Irish magician Brendan Byrne. In addition to providing news stories of a local nature to the Irish magic community it should serve as the first port of call for visiting magicians and lecturers.  www.IrishMagicNews.com contains all the contact information for all the societies in Ireland, contacts and information on Irish conventions and a brief guide for visiting magicians and lecturers. If you are interested in magic and are planning a trip to Ireland be sure to check it at www.IrishMagicNews.com -------------------------------------------- 19.
