John Calvert Has Had A Mild Stroke -------------------------------------------- Message by Alan Sands Dear Magic Friends: Eddy Lester has informed me that Magician; John Calvert has had a mild stroke and is now in the hospital recovering. If you are unfamiliar with John, he is 97 years old and has performed magic on Broadway, in movies, and has toured the world with his large illusion show. here are some short YouTube links to see some of his work: His Lecture this year: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dK9pSqSiGF4 Clips from his show: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6n_es3RPYsI As of recently, he was touring all over the USA doing magic lectures and performing still. He has the most alert mind - a little hearing impaired perhaps, but a brilliant and alert mind; and I am sure he'd love to get cards from his fraternal friends in magic. Magic has always been his love and life. Cards can be sent to: Ray Goulet Attn: John Calvert 118 Marshall St. Watertown, Ma 02472 -------------------------------------------- 3. Latest FISM Update -------------------------------------------- Message by Lu Dinggang-Ryan (China) If you're a dealer coming to FISM I'll let you in on a secret. The Ya Xiu Market. What is it? It's a five story building filled with stalls of merchandise that dealers can resell. It's one of three markets around Beijing and a 10-15 minute taxi ride from the Convention Center. All taxi's are modern and rely on an onboard computer that gives you a register receipt upon your arrival. The fare will be under $5.00. These three markets are negotiable price markets. It works like this.I needed to buy 15 black ties for Rocco for a cut and restored tie routine he was doing at the recent 6 city 15 show theatre tour of China with 4 other world class close up performers. I walk up to the stall say I want 15 black ties and ask how much? The clerk says $8.00 (I'm using dollars as an example because we're using Chinese Yuans). I say No I'll pay $1, she says $5, I say $1 and start to walk away. She says $3 and I say $1 she says I can't go that low. I say OK and end up paying $1.25 each for pure silk ties. The store is filled with clothes, jewelry, leather items, small tools, computer games, did I say you can get a silk dress suit made in a day, silk dresses and any other thing you can wear at great prices. And the items go on and on. But for the magic dealer here's a few things I found at great prices. Silk fans for snow storm in China Laser pens that write invisible until you put the laser on it All sorts of laser lights that change color Copies of old coins with holes from quarter size to 4 inch size Leather purses and wallets Imitation U.S old silver dollars 36 inch foulards Wooden boxes and puzzles Bring a sample of something made in cloth and they can make 100 or more in a day for you and so on.  You can even buy a suitcase to take it all home I'll see you in Beijing and show you my latest finds at the market. Hank Moorehouse, Magic Dealer and International Consultant FISM2009 -------------------------------------------- 4. Remarkable Magic #95 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US) The Criss Angel thing. Living in Las Vegas we are in the epicenter of the whole Criss Angel phenomena. In fact it sometimes seems more like a battlefield than anything else living here in the Neon City. It has certainly been a colorful business watching the various troops circling and shooting. We recently had a storm in a teacup when Criss had an onstage spat with celebrity blogger Perez Hilton. It was an ugly and unnecessary piece of non-showbiz by Angel and the Cirque du Soleil management quite rightly apologized for the entire incident. Name-calling is seldom pretty. Without wanting to enter into the fray, I can't think why Criss would want to give any credibility to Perez Hilton. I have no idea what Hilton offers the world, however I suspect he is way beyond the 15 minutes of fame that Andy Warhol so shrewdly allotted to everyone. If I were Perez I might also be scrabbling for those few extra minutes. Given the general reaction to Criss Angel's show 'Believe' it is impossible to believe that he hasn't stretched his 15 minutes of cable fame into a live performer status in which he can't deliver. It doesn't matter who or how many people you are dating if you can't deliver the goods onstage. I bought the first two seasons of 'Mind Freak' and rather enjoyed them. There was some cool magic that explored a new direction in using video as a magical tool. Of course if you have a magic team headed by Johnny Thompson and Banachek you can expect something special. When they left the quality quickly disintegrated. The original episodes of 'Mind Freak' were an interesting development of the ideas and concepts that David Blaine brought to the TV table.  Blaine actually created something new and different by taking the lessons from reality television and then applying them to his magic specials. Angel took Blaine's ideas and ran wild with them by incorporating the trappings of a rock n' roll performer. Not the least of these trimmings was the auto-destructive ego that rock stars seem to think is what people like best about them. Maybe they do. I have heard enough comments from 'Mind Freak' fans who've been deeply disappointed by 'Believe' to think that David Blaine's more subdued and mysterious approach is a whole lot smarter. Maybe it is just the fact that he hasn't tried to perform his magic live in a steroid pumped conventional magic show that make me feel this way. One thing I do fully understand is that I am nowhere near the audience demographics of either one of these performers as I am too old and even worse than that I am a magician. However, I have always firmly believed that the magic world needs to continually reinvent itself and find ways to draw new and fresher blood into our midst. If you are not moving forward you are going backwards-the world keeps spinning. I wish nothing but the very best to all our younger and less conventional performers and it is exciting to watch the way magic is developing. Even the ideas that aren't a critical or commercial success may be a stepping-stone to a place where we would rather be. At least that's how I like to think about the punk magician character that I created in the late '70s who seemed to confuse audiences slightly more than he amused them! Remove The Other Chair - #118 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com We have been having a great discussion on one of the magic forums about the chair suspension illusion and other illusions that utilize a child helper. There were several questions that came up repeatedly and I felt they were of such importance, that I wanted to share my own ideas here with you all. When performing the chair suspension several people asked, "How do you take the heat off the other chair?" There seemed to be many folks not doing the illusion simply because they felt the other chair had to be removed or that kids would shout out for them to remove it. When I perform the illusion I bring a child up on stage. The very first step is to get the child relaxed and trusting me. Throwing the kid right up on the chairs (or similar illusion like Flying Carpet) and doing the illusion is asking for trouble. So what I do is to make sure the child trusts me and I do that through laughter. I want them to laugh because when they do they relax. Also, doing this takes the heat off of the prop and onto me and the child. If I came out and immediately showed the illusion and took a child and placed them on it, then the heat and focus becomes too centered on the prop itself. I like to change the focus right from the start. I first get down on the child's level by sitting on the stool I use to assist them on getting onto the illusion. Towering over them can scare the kids. The story line I use is one kids can relate to. It is talking about super heroes as all kids can relate to them. I get the kids saying what their favorite might be. I tell them that I will tell them my favorite but it is silly and they all must promise not to laugh. Of course doing so always gets them laughing... which is what I want them to do. I tell them mine was Superman because he could fly through the air. (the patter goes on but I do not want to reveal too much here). You can see by doing this the focus is nowhere near the chairs at all, the focus is on the child and me and what we are going to do. But I state clearly in the patter that I never got to learn how to make people fly and I never became Superman. However I did become a magician and as a magician I have learned to do something that sort of looks like flying. I can make a person float on the edge of these chairs. In order to do this I need 2 things. I need magic and I need imagination. The imagination is where the child comes in. It is his or her imagination that helps me make this work. Now notice that this is all done before ever placing the child on the chairs. You may also be wondering how this has anything to do with them not wanting the other chair removed. Well to answer your question, I am entertaining them and engaging them from the start. I am taking heat off of the prop simply by not drawing attention immediately to it. The focus becomes on the child and on me. The audience becomes so entertained by the experience I am creating that there is no reason at all to even ask for them to remove the chair. The buildup is all leading to the point of removing the final board. I even state in the routine (prior to removing the board) "They often say imagination is called magic and magic is often called the impossible and the impossible looks a lot like this...(pause)" That is when the last board is removed. In this fashion my routine and patter is directing them to realize this is the ending of the illusion. This is the last part of it and the great "reveal". They are directly lead to understand that this is the ending. Because I am directing them in this fashion, no one has any reason to want the other chair removed. The routine is also structured in such a way If I stand there and just do the illusion and pause for a long time (after board is removed), I am not dictating the end of the illusion. The audience has no clue what is supposed to happen because I have not told them. If this is the case, then the logical reaction becomes wanting the last chair removed because they think that is the ending and the next logical step. See my point? My routine leads them down a certain course and through my patter and actions they KNOW ahead of time what the end of the trick is. Because they know, they have no reason to go any further. What I am not doing is standing up there and going WATCH THIS!!! This is what too many folks do. This puts heat totally on the prop and the audience has no clue what is going to happen. You are not directing their focus at all. If you do it this way (and many do) then the audience is left with wanting to comment simply because you are allowing them to. My routine focuses them and points them all in a direction I want them to go in. It is in essence "audience manipulation". I am manipulating them without them knowing it. It is a very hard concept to fully explain and I apologize if I am not doing a good job here with it. I will do my best (as always) to answer anyone's questions about this illusion or working with children on illusions. To fully explain it one would really have to see me perform it or work with me. I also find that if you engage the audience through an effective routine of this illusion, they become so engaged with you and with the child, that there is no time or no reason to shout out anything but to applaud you for what you are doing. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. Cruising With Paul Romhany #68 -------------------------------------------- Message from Paul Romhany (NZ) My work here is almost done! This weeks report will be a little short as Natalie and I have been relaxing on a little island just outside of Auckland. We enjoyed it so much we are seriously looking at moving there! Our tour down under is coming to an end. We have been extremely busy and you have to ask yourself, where does the time go! Had a wonderful lecture in Auckland with over 75 magicians in attendance. My lecture is full on as I try to cram three hours of material in a two hour time frame - from the emails and comments everybody seemed to have a good time and take something away from it. It was very rewarding to get some positive feedback from last week's article on Marvyn and Carol Roy. Many people wrote to me to thank me for my words and thoughts. Somebody made a great point that perhaps one of the readers might want to take up. That is, having a series of DVDs on the market with some of the great acts so that those magicians who never got a chance to see these incredible at work could do so. What a DVD that would be!! It would be a performance only DVD of course. The concept I think is a good one, just needs somebody to put it all together and come up with a list and footage. Now, there may already be something out there but I haven't seen it. NEW BOOK soon to be released. Some breaking news for Magic New Zealand readers who do a little ventriloquism. Prior to working on cruise ships I spent 85% of my time performing walkabout ventriloquism. This type of work kept me busy while I was full time here in NZ and I worked a theme park, shopping malls, corporate events etc. I actually preferred walk about than stand-up as I didn't need to learn entire scripts and interacting with people was easy. I published a little booklet in the mid 1990s about how to get in to the market, what to do etc. and it wasn't until somebody emailed me telling me the original book was on eBay for $200 US that I thought it might be time to revamp the book and have it published professionally. The book just went off to the printers today and should be for sale in a few weeks time from most magic shops. A lot of magicians have a puppet or use a puppet in their act. Walk about ventriloquism is such a unique niche market that chances are you'll be the only person in your area performing it - and you can charge a lot more than you would for walk about magic - simply because it's so unique. The book is 80 pages and is 6" x 9" published by Limelight Press. We have a few more days left on our trip down under so we will enjoy it by visiting my parents before we finally fly back to Canada to try and sell our house and make plans for the big move. Be sure to read my Blog as I have loads of photos on there from our travels. http://romhanyreport.blogspot.com/ Until next time - take care Paul Romhany -------------------------------------------- 7. Oscar Eliason - Major Update Of "Dante The Great" -------------------------------------------- Message by Kent Blackmore (Aust) Twenty-five years after the publication of my first monograph on Oscar Eliason, the Original 'Dante The Great', a major web-based update has been released, containing significant new information in the story of this talented American magician who died an untimely death in Australia at the age of just thirty. With the advent of internet text-searchable newspaper indexes for all major Utah newspapers, Eliason's early years between1893-1897 have now come into the light. How, in a professional career lasting just six years, did Oscar come to be ranked with the likes of Alexander Herrmann? Read about the fight between Eliason and pseudo-spiritualist Harry Waite, and his exposure of Anna Eva Fay. Was the Eliason home on Third Avenue jinxed? New text, added illustrations and new insight into the life of a brilliant young magician. Broken Wand - Earl "PRESTO" Johnson -------------------------------------------- Message from Eric Appel (US) It is with heavy heart that I bring news that local Northeast USA "STAR" "PRESTO" has passed away on April 16th. of a heart attack. After suffering a broken hip, and getting "Lost" into a system that refuses to talk to anyone who is "NOT FAMILY" (Presto had no family left after losing his brother a few years back) Earl died alone. After many long hours of detective work, it has been found that Presto was laid to rest in Evergreen Cemetery in Hillside, NJ. There is no marker, nor will there be unless something is done. We are trying to find out the type of stone that is allowed, and will then look towards the many Rings and Assemblies to help raise and donate the funds necessary to get one. This wonderful entertainer brought many smiles and much laughter. He was a brother Magi and shared his knowledge and humor freely. His style and comedy inspired many, and it was always a pleasure to watch him work a crowd. Please bring this news to your club and let's start to get the ball rolling. As we get more info, we will set things up and reach out to the respective area clubs and look for their support. Let's all just take heart that Presto is now entertaining along with so many who went before. I just have a hard time picturing him telling God "Just take it home and try it. IT WON"T WORK, but you'll have a lot of fun!" Rest in Peace my friend. -------------------------------------------- 10. Mike Super, The Phenomenon -------------------------------------------- Message from Walter Blaney (US) It's always fun to pass on a good word about a fellow magician who does a great show. I just saw Mike Super present his two hour stage show in the beautiful restored Paramount Theater in Austin, Texas last week. His two nights there had packed houses both nights. Mike has a strong personality, is in command, and has a fast moving show. The main accolade is that he wins over the audience and holds them from beginning to end. They love him. He becomes your friend, and they are astounded by every trick. It is a company of six, and there are a half dozen good illusions all very well done. In between there are a lot of excellent routines, plenty of audience participation, lots of laughs and bits of business that come only from a busy schedule of shows over many years. In the college field Mike has won Entertainer of the Year four times. On the recent NBC TV series Phenomenon Mike won first place. He does about 200 shows a year, and it shows. Off stage he is a great guy too. If he comes your way, do yourself a favor and go see his show. You will give him a standing ovation just like the audience I saw did. It was such a good feeling in these tough economic times to see that people still want to be entertained by magic, will spend their hard earned money to get out for an evening in the theater to see a good magic show, and go away raving about the good time they had. My Stetson's off to Mike Super and his magic. Cheers from Texas. Walter walter@walterblaney.com -------------------------------------------- 15.
