Remarkable Magic #90 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message by Nick Lewin (US) The Marvelous Marvyn & Carol Roy. There is a tiny group of people in the magic that just make you feel better for knowing them. You sometimes don't even know why they affect you in that manner-they just do. Right at the top of this select list of truly special people are Marvyn and Carol Roy. I really don't believe you could find two people who better demonstrate this unique quality than Mr. & Mrs. Electric. My earliest memories of seeing this dynamic duo was watching them on the family television set when I was a kid growing up in England. As a budding magician I remember watching in amazement at that seemingly never-ending string of lit bulbs emerged from Marvyn's mouth. It was one of the coolest pieces of magic I had ever seen. Even as a novice magician I was very aware that a real team was at work when the Electrics performed their wonders. Carol was the first female I remember seeing in a magic show who transcended the role of assistant and became a fully-fledged partner. I didn't know what a fabulous character she was until I got to meet her in person. Years later I was to get the opportunity to work with Marvyn and Carol in one of my first club dates in America. I was 21 years old and couldn't believe I was to share a bill with this legendary act. It was particularly exciting to watch them perform their full-length show. It was a special delight to see them perform a perfect electric chair routine. After the show we went to grab a late night meal at a local 'Bob's Big Boy' and I got to meet the people behind the magical icons. Nothing in my magical experience had prepared me for the pure adrenalin rush of a post-show Marvyn Roy. His enthusiasm and expertise were all focused on helping this newcomer to see a vision and future for his show. It was a delightful avalanche of advice and magical wisdom. OK, I didn't change my name to Link Lewin and make a career out of linking things, but I certainly thought about it! I certainly did go out the very next day and buy a Himber Ring at the suggestion of Marvyn. It proved to be one of the best purchases I ever made in magic. Who knows maybe I should rethink the name thing! Several years later I had the opportunity to work with Marvyn and Carol in a series of shows at a very upscale mall in Vancouver. They worked so hard between shows preparing for the next show that I felt guilty as I restacked my Multiplying Bottles and set my linking rings. However the real joy was getting to renew our acquaintance and spend some time with Marvyn and Carol before and after our shows. I recently read the wonderful memoir that Marvyn penned called 'Mr. Electric Unplugged.' I can't say enough about what an inspiring and enjoyable book this is. Not many magic books grab your interest and hold your attention like this one. This book is so good that you begin reading at a feverish pace, until you realize you are half way through it and then you slow down so as to treasure every story. Thank you Mike Caveney for publishing this gem and thank you Marvyn and Carol for just being the people you are! For details on my recession busting lecture 'Making Money with Magic,' check out my website www.nicklewin.com it is a great way to get some of those old props out the cupboard and make some money with them! -------------------------------------------- 8. Conveying And Using Personality #113 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com I posted recently on Facebook asking a simple question. What is one of the best qualities or traits you feel makes for a good magician and why? It was an interesting discussion that brought about a lot of great answers and opinions. However, one item kept coming up by many people. It is a single word called  "personality". It was so great seeing so many folks give value to personality over other things. I really think personality is so underrated in magic today. People just simply forget the power it has in everything we do. A trick is just a trick. The people want to like you. If you take the same trick and place it in the hands of someone who has and conveys personality and then someone who does not, it looks like a totally different effect to a lay audience. It really is that stunning to see happen. Tricks alone do not really mean anything by themselves. A trick will not happen or work without the magician. Place a deck of cards on a table and they are not going to start doing an ACR routine by themselves. If they do, then start to run real quick. It is YOU that makes the difference and it is YOU that make the magic happen. If this is the case, then focus should be on you and not the prop or trick you are presenting. But what is it about you? It is your personality that really makes the audience enjoy the experience and enjoy you in the process. I honestly feel that people want to be entertained way more then they want to be fooled. People want to walk away having had fun with the experience of what they just saw happen. Take some of the best acts out there today. Take a look at the ones that you really love to watch perform. It is safe to say that you enjoy them because 95% of their act is not solely based on the magic alone. There is more to what they provide isn't there? The good entertainers are that way because a majority of their act is interacting with the audience in a comical entertaining way, engaging, dialogue, connecting, talking. etc. It is the essence of their personality that makes you enjoy what they do. It is interaction and expressing personality. It is taking the audience on a journey and getting them laughing and having fun instead of just seeking the WOW only. I think that is key. If you could take away the trick in any performance, and safely say the routine is still entertaining, then I think you have something. Take away the props and the trick and then look at what that performer does. I can safely say the entertainers that "get it" are the ones who without any of these props, can still entertain an audience and have them enjoying every minute of it. This is the essence and importance of personality in magic. There is a quote that was shared to me by my good friend Dan Birch. Dan said the quote goes like this: "If they walk away saying remember the trick that the magician did, then I have failed. But if they say remember the magician who did that trick, then I have succeeded." I was so glad Dan shared this with me because it got me thinking that it is your personality that makes them remember you. I think that is a key to developing a likeable character. Some magicians try to focus so much on the trick only that they are void of any personality at all. I want the audience remembering me not my deck of cards. No one is saying not to have the tricks. What we are saying is that the focus of any performance should not be on the trick itself. The trick is just a prop. The focus should be on personality and using that personality to truly take the effect to an entertaining level. It is giving the audience more to enjoy. You add personality into what you do and I guarantee your audiences will thank you for it. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. - "Encore! Cruising With Paul Romhany #64 -------------------------------------------- Message by Paul Romhany (NZ) Cruising with Paul Romhany As I write this I am on an Australian tour with a variety show. So far we have played a few cities in Tasmania and now in Melbourne. Friday night will be my lecture and so I'm looking forward to meeting up with fellow magicians and sharing my new lecture with them all. Here is the continuation of Basics on cruising. Remember, for more inside information and actual contacts so you can get work on a cruise ship, be sure to contact your local magic shop and ask to buy a copy of my book Entertaining On A Cruise Ship By Paul Romhany - the ultimate guide. This book is available from all good magic shops around the world. It is only $29.95 US - or visit www.thecruisemagician.com Back to Basics of working on a ship. Cue Sheets Always have your cue sheets ready to give the production manager. These will include any music cues and lighting cues. You will always get time to rehearse and this will be the time to go over any cues. The stages on the ships today are incredible and have everything. Prepare cue sheets for light and sound technicians. Early upon your arrival on the ship the stage manager will contact you. He or she will want to know what special requirements you need and how much rehearsal time to schedule. You should be familiar with your technical requirements. Talk to him about the kind of lighting and sound you need and any backstage help you will require. At rehearsal you should be able to supply written cue sheets that explain how and when all the technical things happen during your act. For recorded music I use a programmable mini-disc unit. If you use recorded music I recommend that you put it on the highest quality playback method you can. If you use extensive and complex lighting, I recommend you bring videotape of your act to show the lighting technician how you'd like it to look. Light fixtures change from place to place, but the same mood and affect can be created from various sources. Live animals Some acts do use live animals on ships, to do this you need to get pre-approved by head office of the cruise line you are working for so they can sort out the paper work well in advance. To travel with livestock is the responsibility of the Guest Entertainer. Theatre Conduct It is important that you are familiar with stage deportment; how to enter, exit, and take a curtain call. This is all part of professionalism, simple theatre 101. First impressions matter, but never more than when you are on stage. During the first 30 seconds, your audience will size you up. They make judgments about you that will color their attitudes about what you do. The first moments are critical. You need to strategically decide how you will present yourself immediately upon your introduction. Likewise you should give careful consideration to the end of your act. How will you finish? How will you exit the stage? Cruise ship shows all have emcees, so you will be called back to the stage for a bow. Usually, an act will finish their last routine and take a bow as the M.C. announces the act's name. The band will play a quick and bouncy piece of music as the performer walks off stage. The emcee will then ask the audience to "call the performer back," with another round of applause. At this point the entertainer walks back to the stage to receive the applause. The theatres on cruise ships today are more equipped than most theatres on land, with the latest sound equipment, lighting and video equipment. Try and view your act as theatre and make use of all the technology available to you. In my act I use a video montage to introduce my Chaplin act. I have also performed close-up magic on the main stage and had it projected behind me on a large video screen. On a cruise you will be expected to know how to conduct yourself and your act in a real theater setting. This is not always something a magician that is used to working solo is familiar with. You will deal with other professionals like the an emcee, stage manager, sound engineer, light technician, orchestra leader and other professional entertainers that you will share the stage and dressing room with. You should know stage terminology, blocking and what light designs you will need. If all this is foreign to you, get some experience before trying the ship market. Contract A Guest Entertainer Independent Contractor Agreement will be issued each time a Guest Entertainer is contracted to work on board. The contract should be reviewed carefully and signed accordingly. The contract will say how much money you are being paid on a weekly basis and your travel dates. You will also get a boarding letter. This letter will come in useful when going through immigration as they may ask to see it. Quite often when traveling through US immigration I am taken in to another room while they confirm with the cruise line that I will be joining the ship. This agreement will also give your flight details, the port agents details of the country you will be flying to and often your return flight. There are times where you don't get your return flight until you are onboard. Always have a copy of your contract and boarding agreement with you. You will need to show the boarding agreement to the security officer when you get to the gangway on the ship. Contract Payment Each company differs on their pay system. There was a time when I would be paid on the ship on a bi-monthly basis, but this is no longer the case. In my case my agent gets my money on the 15th and 30th of each month and he then transfers it to my account. I prefer this because then he can take out his commission and it saves me having to send him the money. I know there are still ships where they act gets paid onboard and also some acts who have the money deposited directly into their bank accounts. During a ship's dry-dock, refit. Or maintenance period that falls within the duration of a contract, it is at the company's discretion to either pay the Guest Entertainer on a pro-rata basis or provide a round trip airfare to the Guest Entertainer's "home" airport and back to the ship. When I finish this contract next week the company is accommodating me for two nights in Gibraltar before I transship to another ship for a week. They will pay for my hotel, food and any travel while I am staying in port. Guest Entertainers are paid for the day they embark the ship, but not for the day they disembark the ship. Travel days are not usually reimbursed unless otherwise agreed. For US citizens the company must report all earnings and a 1099 form will be issued at year end. All Guest Entertainers are responsible to payment of government taxes and so forth. Cruise Director While onboard the ship, it is the Cruise Director who looks after the Guest Entertainers and is the person in charge of scheduling performers and putting together the daily 'newspaper' on what the day's activities will be. More often than not, it is the CD that will be introducing you, so have a very short and precise introduction prepared so that s/he can use it to bring you onstage. They don't like to read long winded introductions so my advice is to keep it short and simple. The cruise director is also the person who will be reporting back to head office about your act and how it was received. You will never really know what the CD is thinking and in my time on ships I think I have seen it all. You get the cruise directors who are very professional and care about their guest entertainers, yet on the other hand you get those that don't care at all. In one case, I had a CD who didn't even bother to turn up and introduce me, so I had to do it myself and take myself off stage. The next night he never showed up and so another guest entertainer introduced the act. Without a doubt the worst CD I have ever worked for, just plain lazy and didn't care. When I approached him on the matter his comment was "I could get more money working at McDonalds" . I told him maybe he should go there and work instead. This same CD I made a noise complaint because there were parties next door in the cabins every night going on until 3am, this went on for almost 2 weeks until I complained. We had the dancers in the hallway and none of the guest acts could sleep. When I complained the CD told me not to hassle his dancers, then I found out that he was the one holding the parties!!! Sometimes you can't win. I try to keep out of the CDs way, just go on, do my job, be polite and that is it. They do have a very busy life on a ship and they run a large department so as little hassle from guest entertainers makes their lives that much easier. -------------------------------------------- 10. Duck Cameron & The Lovely Nika In Hong Kong -------------------------------------------- Message by Duck Cameron (Aust) Nika (my wife) and I have been doing ships at all corners of the globe for the last 7 years, and Magic New Zealand has a always been a great way to keep in touch with what's going on while we are travelling. I first met Alan over ten years ago, while I was touring New Zealand with Webers Circus as the Principal Character Zork (an evil wizard/magician...imagine the count from Sesame Street with a sinister streak!...very cartoon like, and a lot of fun to play). More than once, after the show, Alan knocked on the trailer door, and caught up over coffee. When one is touring, it is lovely to see people make the effort to make you feel welcome in their town. I'll never forget the hopefuls though, that would come and watch and instead of saying Hi after the show, would go straight to the box office with their pre-prepared promo stuff, hoping for a position in the future! The only positive thing about this is you get a good collection of magician's DVD's! I will always remember Alan for his warmth, help and supportive comments. We have been based in Hong Kong for the last six months and were lucky enough to catch up with David & Dania (Quick Change Act) who were also in town doing shows. I love Quick Change Acts, but had never had the opportunity of seeing David and Dania live (a year ago we were booked at a David Sandy show in Malaysia together, but we had to cancel due to work that kept us in the States). Their act blew us and the audience away...energy, perfect timing...and those changes! Even though they were doing three shows a day and were rushed, they took the time to meet. A lovely couple with an act that inspired. Nika and I are here in Hong Kong until the end of June, so if anyone is in town, drop us a line at duck@duckmagic.com -------------------------------------------- 11.
