Editor's Message -------------------------------------------- We are now back to publishing Magic New Zealand on a weekly basis. Remember if you have any magic news drop me a line: AW@Alan-Watson.com -------------------------------------------- 2. Greg Britt - Queens New Years Eve Honours -------------------------------------------- Message by Marty and Brenda Hahne - Dazzling Magic I want to congratulate Elgregoe the Magician (Greg Britt) who was included in the Queens New Years Eve Honours in New Zealand. He was made a member of The New Zealand Order Of Merit and the induction will be made by the Governor General in Greg's home town of Christchurch in March. The award was for his services to education. We had the pleasure of having Elgregoe share on his school show programmes at our Magic Show conference in Branson and his mix of message and magic is outstanding. His show has been seen by half a million New Zealand children and is heavily booked for 2009. The Prime Minister John Keys said he appreciated Greg's unique way of educating New Zealand children, that he had followed his dream and it was time for all New Zealander's to know what he was doing and inspire other New Zealander's to follow their dreams. We are so thrilled to be in New Zealand as guests at the 29th New Zealand magicians Convention 2008, and to share in this special time in Greg and his wife Sue's magical journey. Obituary - Larry White -------------------------------------------- Message by Ben Robinson (US) Larry White (Laurence Barton White Jr.) September 21, 1935 - December 21, 2008 by Ben Robinson Larry White was a scientist, inventor, writer, publisher, book editor, chef, mechanic, collector of unusual gadgets, builder of amazing science experiments, teacher to tens of thousands of elementary school students, special effects consultant, pioneer of early educational television and a rabid letter writer. He was one of my closest friends, who I met in 1984. My collaboration with him was the result of an introduction by one of the greatest magicians of the twentieth century, Mr. Orville Meyer. Yet, strangely, while both Larry and I corresponded with Meyer, neither of us ever met him in person. The result of all of our work was the cult classic 1986 book, Twelve Have Died, the definitive statement on the history and practice of the very dangerous bullet-catching stunt. I initially wrote of him, "I am indebted to my chief collaborator, Larry White, Director of the Needham Science Center." I always will be. In 1987 we collaborated on a finely made prop for sale that was not released to the magic community until Larry's retirement in 2003, The Larry White Hatpin. It initially sold for $75, and while only 40 or 50 were actually made, they sold out with just two reviews, one editor calling it "the trick of the decade." Indeed it is, and the price has gone up, collector's falling over themselves in the process of writing out a check for over $300 for one of Larry's inventions. Larry wrote many books for the general public, such as The Surprise Book, The Trick Book, Hocus Pocus and a book simply titled Optical Illusions. I imagine there were about 30 books he turned out for the public, which are literally in libraries all over the world. They are the very first books most young aspiring magicians will read (and have read) since the sixties, when the young scientist married his lovely wife Doris and had two sons. Larry was the Trick Editor for Tannen's Magic Manuscript and the Magic Editor for M-U-M. Both positions, at the dawn of the Internet brought him the global fame and the affect on magic by which he is known. He marketed pens that fell off a table by psychokinetic power (supposedly) and I have several letters telling me of his joy that a company in Japan had just ordered 2000! Another trick he titled "Badgic" made one's name appear on a name tag, and also was used by every trade show worker from coast to coast at one time and now is a standard. I used mine so many times it is a heap of plastic and tape. Larry's marketing of magic and his own brilliant ideas such as the "Out of Body" deck he created, marketed by Larry Becker, shock audiences the world over. When you saw America's #1 Female Illusionist Lyn Dillies or me chop our arm into three, it was Larry behind the curtain as our eminence gris. If you don't know what an "eminence gris" is, look it up; that is Larry White in a nutshell. When I hired him to create a police barrier that I could walk through in my one man show Out Of Order, produced by the Obie-award winning Music Theatre Group, Larry and his faithful partner Dan DeWolf did it in record time, under budget and delighted veteran Broadway producer Lyn Austin. He showed up at our conference fresh from the pages of TIME magazine where he had just been profiled as one of the best science teachers in the United States. Articles about me and the show proclaimed that Larry was our secret weapon, and one writer likened him not to the Christopher Lloyd mad scientist from Back to the Future, but to the infamous "Q" who Ian Fleming had create materials for James Bond. In a sense Larry was both, as we stayed up all night once drinking cheap jug wine and offering each other thoughts on how to change a deck of cards many colors psychologically. The result is the opening I've done in my show over 10,000 times. Another time I was featured for a week on the famous long (still)-running series All My Children. I produced a rabbit from a topper in a circus scene. The rabbit's name was Willie. Larry was the recipient of Willie and her babies Presto and Pronto, whom he lent out to children's school rooms in the local school district, and a tape of her appearance on the famous show. Everyone won. Willie got a good home with her children, kids were delighted to meet a star rabbit and I got a little press and to Larry it was all in a day's work. Once, I told fellow inventor Mark Setteducati, that were I to put him in a car, drive to Needham MA, and introduce him to Larry, "something would happen." It did. Mark achieved his first cover in a magic magazine with a 16-page section contributed in his honor guided by the brilliance of the contributors and the man pulling the ropes backstage, Larry White. Oh, Mark's issue also won the coveted Leslie Guest Award that year. Yes, something happened. Larry White was a combat photographer during the Korean War and this tells us something about him; he was always in the thick of it. Whether it was making a rocket powered bicycle out of pressurized soda cans, or blowing up a balloon the size of a blue whale to demonstrate to children the actual size, or writing the textbook for the National Science Foundation, Larry was always "up" for an adventure, and we had our share. Once, lost in the Himalaya, I decided if my body was found I'd want my final words to go to one person who would take care of my remains - the letter that would have been found on my body was written to Larry White. He had few things to say to magicians. He often told me that the problem with magic was magicians, and he was not kidding. Sure, he worked for and created magic, but not for magicians. His creative juices were swelled to their peak for one reason only: to exercise his overly creative mind. Money for him was just a tool and easily substituted for with hard work and love. Larry White was a major, global presence in many areas; magic was just one. I would not be surprised to find an invention he patented on the market five years from now by someone who has just woken up to this giant who walked among us. Larry was a very humble man, refusing to actually deal with most of the requests that was made upon his time. He wasn't mean, he just did not have time for what did not concern his family, his great interests, or his quest to bring scientific inquiry to young minds. I spent just shy of 25 years working with this man who adopted me as I adopted him; both of us not having what the other brought to the table. He cheered in my corner and I strove to make him proud, and every night when I perform his brilliant Trisection Illusion (which I named) I tell the story of a Dr. Laurence B. White who I met at the Base Camp of Mt. Everest, and who told me of a very strange dream he had where his hand was detached from his body and walked up to his throat and began to choke him.I said "what you are about to see, through artifice and illusion, ladies and gentlemen is the product of one magician's nightmare.he called it.The Trisection." Cue music. Larry (a man obsessed with Lizzie Borden) loved that, and while he lay sick, fighting his last battle with cancer, he told me that I made him fall out of bed laughing. And to his memory, may audiences continue falling out of their seats in the sheer wonder he brought us all. -------------------------------------------- 4. Celebrating 100 - #100 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message by Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com I sit here in my office/design studio on the Friday after Christmas staring at a blank Microsoft Word page with that blinking cursor of death. As I stare at it wondering what to type it dawns on me. I have been doing this same ritual now for almost 2 years. Every week staring at that cursor wondering and praying that some profound information may flow from my head to my fingers and on to the screen. Sometimes the columns write themselves and sometimes I struggle for days with it. But it has always gotten done. As I stare at the cursor this Friday afternoon, it dawns on me; This very column marks my 100th to date. 100 times I have stared at this word application hoping to be able to write something thought provoking. What amazes me the most is that I am still writing after all of this time? You see, I am and have always been a visual artist. Writing was just not something that thrilled me or I was good at. On top of that, many of you know I am a deaf entertainer and have been most all my life. I technically should not even be able to perform on stage, but I prove everyone wrong every time the curtains open and I step out. Being a deaf person just meant English was not one of my favorite subjects. I was so far behind simply because I could not hear the words or even my own voice at times. I learned simply by reading lips and working harder than anyone else around me. This is why when almost 2 years ago today, Alan asked me for permission to publish something I had written, and I really thought he was joking with me. Surely he could not want something written by myself? After all, I am deaf entertainer and artist who hates to write. But he was sincere and genuine and he soon became my very good friend. What started out as just a onetime only deal branched out into me becoming a featured weekly columnist? I was very surprised by the reactions I got from that very first column written so long ago. It was never intended to be anything more than a onetime deal. But apparently the feedback Alan got was positive and he asked me to continue to write. The feedback I get from YOU the readers every single week fills me with joy and just simply reminds me that although it may take me longer to write articles than most, it is worth every minute I put into it. I love giving back to magic what magic has given to me. To share the joy I have of magic and creativity is something I am very grateful for. So I want to take this moment this week to simply thank a LOT of people who have helped me in the past 2 years of writing these 100 columns. I first want to thank Alan Watson for simply giving the chance for a deaf entertainer to share his love and passion for our art. For allowing me to write for him is a true honor and blessing and something I will always cherish. Thank you Alan for all you have done for me and have done for others. I next want to thank my fellow columnists. I walk in your shoes and to be beside you every week is a blessing for me and something I am so thrilled about. Nick Lewin and Paul Romhany are stars in magic who have done far more then I have done and to be able to be in the same ezine with them is a true honor. I thank you gentlemen for all you do each week. I also want to thank my lovely wife Kelly for simply being my partner on stage and in life. I simply would not be able to do this for as long as I have without her support and her love. She helps remind me of deadlines and due dates and helps give me ideas each week. She is and always will be my soul mate. Lastly, I want to thank someone so special that literally words typed here could never do justice. I want to THANK EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU READERS. After all you are the ones who read what I type and support what I do each week. You are the ones who let me know your thoughts, opinions and ideas. You allow me to do something I love to do and you all empower me each week. I cannot say thank you enough to each and every one of you. This 100th column is an amazing accomplishment for me. I honestly never thought I would reach 10 let alone 100. But it does not mark an end at all. I plan on continuing to write every week as long as Alan still wants me to and as long as you the readers still enjoy what I write about. So this Holiday season I want to say thank you all for supporting me through these first 100 columns and I hope to be able to write for 100 more. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. - "Encore! Cruising With Paul Romhany # 50 -------------------------------------------- Message by Paul Romhany (NZ) As Carol Roy used to say in her Genii articles ... "It A'int All Glamour". What a week of travel headaches it has been. My wife and I had planned to fly out of our home town in New Brunswick on 21st December. We had different flights out to make the ship on the 22nd in Cozumel. It was touch and go on the 21st as there was a big snow storm and many flights were cancelled. I had decided to change my flight so I left a little earlier in the afternoon, instead of the original 7pm time. Natalie turned up for her 1pm flight, which was delayed. I was able to get out and get up to Toronto where I spent the night and waited for the airport to open up for the morning. Natalie, however, did not have as much luck. Her flight had been cancelled so the airline decided to put her in a taxi and drive her to her next airport, two and a half hours away in Halifax. She gets to Halifax only to realise she would not make the connection to Boston so another drive back to our home airport in a taxi. The weather really started to pack up and more flights were cancelled. The airline then told her the next flight she could get out would only be on the 26th December, by which time most of the cruise would be over. She had no choice but to head home. I was at least able to get a window to fly out of Toronto early the next morning and make it to Cozumel eventually. One of the things I have learned is that you just have to go with the flow - sometimes things don't go your way and that's all part show business. I finally made it to the ship and found out I was to do my show! Another part of being prepared for the cruise industry. I had rehearsal with the sound and lighting people, which lasted an hour and a half. This should always be a warning because it never takes more than an hour. Come show time the rehearsal might as well not even of happened because they had no idea what was going on. It was incredibly frustrating trying to cue them from stage as Charlie Chaplin. I could not break out of character because I don't speak during my show. One of the unfortunate things today about cruising is that a lot of cut backs are being made - and this includes hiring skilled people who know their craft of sound and lights. I have noticed that cruise lines are hiring more and more people who are not trained prior to coming on a ship, and they expect them to be able to produce a show. In my case, I asked the stage manager to call the cruise director and tell him I wanted a meeting with the stage staff and him. During this meeting I told them how unhappy I was with their work and it was not acceptable. The cruise director was very thankful as he had been having a lot of troubles with his stage staff. He said he was very impressed with what I did and felt I handled it professionally. Coming from an act hopefully will make them wake up and take their job more seriously. These are just some of the things you are up against when you are a fly on act. You turn up, have a rehearsal and really have to hope that everybody knows their job. If you are on for a long time then at least you have the chance of them getting it right. In my case, you don't have that luck. Until next week - happy cruising. I agree with the last reviewer that the venue The Kelvin Club was fantastic, we were treated to a free drink and then the cash bar flowed at the 100 year old club. It was good to catch up with some of the working pros I know. We were ushered upstairs for the show and I decided to stand at the back behind the seats with a few of my professional colleagues.  What we saw was unbelievable, actually what we tried to see. The acts were in the dark!! Where were the lights? In fact there was more lights right at the back of the room where we stood. MC Don Crawford came on acknowledged past members and gave out a couple of awards, and told us to enjoy the show which was 2 months in the making. Laurie Kelly came on a performed the Professors Nightmare, then Arm Chopper for a scared kid. Ron Gallager came on with boundless energy Did the electronic release, juggled swords, cutting a carrot (I think) to prove they were sharp (the lighting was so bad we couldn't see the carrot or the pieces flying off !!) and finished with fire eating which was the only time we could see a performers face. He also opted to not use the mic which I think was a great move as the speakers sounded like brooding pigeons had been nesting in them for 30 years. Dave Lord came on and through the mic of muffled sound performed rope to silk, rocky raccoon, a self working jumbo card trick and then did the straight jacket to music.  After going back downstairs for more drinks the main discussion was production, I don't attend magic clubs much as I find them still in the dark ages, tonight was no exception. The acts were average, all did self working stuff, the sound and lights were probably top of the line when Henry Ford put his first car on the road, With regards to the last reviewer saying "future meetings will be sure to discuss the funding of improving the lighting arrangements for future Shows." Meetings? Funding? Maybe an $18 spotlight from Bunnings? hey why not splash out and get 2 ! ! A few of us were seriously thinking of asking for our $25 back. Then declined agreeing that $25 was worth catching up with some mates and seeing for our own eyes the shamble of a show (2 months in the making), which will be etched in my mind forever.
