Women In Boxes Now On DVD! -------------------------------------------- Message from Gary Michaels (USA) I was just notified by the folks who made the eagerly-awaited "Women In Boxes" that it was just released on DVD this past weekend. It's very reasonably priced at $22.95 and they accept credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express), eChecks and PayPal. The company also offers a variety of shipping options -- to the US at least -- including First Class Mail, Priority Mail and UPS Overnight. The direct link to order is: http://www.filmbaby.com/films/3277 You may also contact them by phone from 9am-5pm PST at 1-877-FILMBABY (1-877-345-6222) or by emailing filmbaby@filmbaby.com or info@womeninboxes.com. FilmBaby's direct number for overseas customers is 1-503-255-1847. The film is presented in widescreen (16:9 aspect ratio) and is rated PG, with a running time of 80 minutes. Here is the film's synopsis from the filmbaby.com site: "Women in Boxes is the first film to uncover the story of the Unsung Hero behind the magician. The devoted, if not masochistic Magic Assistant who distorts her body into impossible positions while the magician cuts her in pieces, stabs her, sets her on fire, crushes her, makes her disappear, then restores her to life with a dramatic Taa Daa and takes a bow to wild applause. Who is the woman who would subject herself to such torture, not to mention, the Magician's Ego? Are these women just bimbos parading around in skimpy clothes? Or are they the real magic behind the Illusionist? Heretofore sworn to secrecy, this tough yet feminine group opened their homes, hearts and lives for the filmmakers and gave an insider’s view of love, life and magic family values. As this is a family affair, many of the women are joined on camera with their ‘more famous’ husbands, and some are interviewed with their daughters as they take their turn in the box. In seeking out the greatest magic acts of the past 20th century, Women in Boxes went on a worldwide quest and hit gold in the untold lives of its main characters: Deanna Shimada, Coral (The Impossibilist) Reveen, Pam (Tomsoni and Co.) Thompson, Stacy (The Majestix) Jones, Luna Shimada, Moi Yo (Dante the Great) Miller, Frances (Willard the Wizard) Willard, Princess Irene Larsen (co-founder of The Magic Castle), Gay Blackstone, Dove, Jan (Mis-made Lady) Jones, Lance Burton with Burton’s Babes, Criss (Mindfreak) Angel, and in a very rare occurrence, the magician Teller SPEAKS on camera!!!" ~Gary Michaels gary@gary-michaels.com http://gary-michaels.com/collection.html http://gary-michaels.com/kirk.html -------------------------------------------- 6. Remarkable Magic #64 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message from Nick Lewin (US) The Amazing Mr. Tihany and his Magic Circus. The joy of being a magician is that you never quite know what is going to happen next or whom you will meet. I suspect that this surprise factor is one of the things we most enjoy. Peter Reveen phoned up one day and told us that he was going to bring Mr. Tihany over to visit us the next day. I was very polite and said how much I looked forward to his visit. After I had put the phone down I sat back in my chair and wondered who the heck Mr. Tihany was! I could tell by Peter’s tone of voice that he was someone very special and I looked forward to meeting him. I have never aimed or claimed to be an expert on magic and its rich history but this was an occasion that confirmed my utter success as a failure in this field. Mr. Tihany proved to be one more milestone in the list of Remarkable Magicians it has been my pleasure to meet. I will long remember our all too brief meeting. By the time Peter and his lovely wife Coral arrived at our home accompanying Mr. Tihany I had managed to establish that he was the owner of a tent show called ‘Tihany’s Magic Circus’ that toured extensively in South America and Mexico. This covered the facts as adequately as saying Dai Vernon did card tricks. At 91 years of age, Mr. T was one of the most vibrant and energized human beings it has been my pleasure to meet. The first thing he did was give me a business card that identified him as Franz Czeisler but he assured me he was always known as Tihany which was the name of the town he was born in. I was very impressed by the obvious affection and high regard with which Peter and Coral held Mr. T, let’s be honest this is one couple in magic that have seen it all and done it all. Impressing them is like fooling Johnny Thompson with an egg bag. Gradually I started to piece together a more accurate picture of my idea of a ‘Tent Show’ and that of Mr. Cziesler. It was as different as chalk and cheese. The show that carried Mr. Tihany’s name was an elaborate event that was filled with glamour, style and spectacle. As you entered the enormous tent that holds over two thousand people you walk across a welcoming red carpet. The red carpet treatment doesn’t end there and absolutely everything about your experience is first-rate. Spectacular dancing fountains frame the stage and a line of showgirls, all imported from Germany, add the glamour of a Playboy magazine cover to the stage. The magic is the work of a producer who wouldn’t acknowledge second best if it stared him in the face. I found it highly endearing that Tihany had always included the vanishing cigarette in his performance throughout his onstage career as a small and personal touch. It isn’t only size that matters! I listened to his stories and reveled in his wisdom as he sat on our couch. At 91 most people are beginning to slow down to the pace of your average mindreading trick, not Mr. Tihany. This legendary showman had two cell phones in his inside pockets and between sipping hot water and lemon and telling stories he used them both continually. Still intimately involved in the day today running of his empire he answered calls and gave instructions and orders like a Donald Trump on steroids! His obvious command and control of each situation was implicit and awesome. The impact of Mr. Tihany’s personality was an eye-opening experience that left me exhilarated. The hints one received about his larger than life past left me wishing I had time to delve much more deeply into this amazing man. I suspect not one of his 91 years was even close to being dull. Thank you Peter, it was a joy to widen my magical world and embrace someone who has truly done something new under the Sun. Check out YouTube and Google and you’ll find it alive with videos and articles about Tihany that will inspire and entertain you. The Art Of "Thank You"! - #86 - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message from Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com Is there power behind the simple phrase "Thank You!"? Is there something about those two words that every magician should know, understand and use? My answer to that is a simple.. YES! There is power behind saying thanks and there are more benefits from it then most people may know. Sure there is instant gratification between you and the person you are thanking, but there is even a far more powerful thing that every magician can use. It is realizing that Thank You can be a tool in your marketing tool box. You can use these 2 simple words to really expand your marketing at the event and long after the event is over. Allow me to explain. Every client I work for, I always make it a policy of not only saying Thank You, but physically showing it to them in a written format and a visual display. If my goal is to be a professional at all times and increase my perceived value to the client, then this is something I should get into the habit of doing always. Think about it this way. If you hire a contractor to come to your house to set up a sun room, and then that person says Thank You and then also sends you a thank you letter or card in the mail, will you not recall that person? Chances are you will not only remember them but you may possibly refer them or use them again in the future. There is power in thanks. I like to do several things at every event I perform at. I first make up a Thank You Kit. This is a simple kit that I make ahead of time and includes the following: - A Thank You letter - This is a personalized thanks from me to them for having me at their event. But the letter also goes on explaining the importance of referrals and encouraging them to do so. It also talks about the evaluation form and how that form helps me to deliver quality to all my clients. - Evaluation Form - This is a very simple (but direct) evaluation form that is set up with 6-7 questions in multiple choice fashion. It is also constructed and worded in such a way that it encourages the client to add in and give me comments along the way. It is easy to fill out to encourage them to do so. - SASE - I make it as easy on them as possible to want to return the form back to me. The SASE is set up ready to go. - Business cards - I can easily place a few business cards into the flap of the SASE. These then can be used by the client. - A small gift - You can get so many gifts these days that do not cost you very much. However, in the eyes of the client, receiving even a simple gift means a lot to them. This is in essence my thank you kit. But the power for me is in how I deliver the thank you kit to the client. I do it as a part of the show itself. At the end of the event I would bring up the b-day child (for example) and their parent. I would then state that we would not be here having so much fun if it were not for these special folks who invited us. I then have the entire audience say Thank You to the client and have the child hand the thank you to their parent and say thank you to them. This works amazingly well. It really shows the client that you care and that you are far different then most magicians. It is going that extra step to have your perceived value climb in their mind. They will remember and thank you for doing so and there also is a greater return rate for the forms being sent back to you by doing this. It is also nice to know that after you have left the event, your name will be fresh in their mind as they open and read the letter and look over the thank you kit that you presented to them. They will also remember you from the simple gift you gave to them. Is there power in Thank You? Absolutely. Use it and the ideas expressed here and try it for yourself. I think you will be very happy with the results. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. - "Encore! Entertaining On The Ocean #37 - Paul Romhany -------------------------------------------- Message from Paul Romhany (NZ) Thanks to Dan Sperry for taking time out of his hectic schedule to answer a few questions. Dan has one of the most original dove acts in the world today and is fast becoming a well-known name in the world of magic. He has also released a few incredible magic routines including his highly innovative "dove from sketch". A few years back while touring with Canadian Illusionist Murray Hatfield, I had the privilege of working with Dan. He never missed a beat in his act and was constantly working on developing ideas and always blowing the audience away with this very unique act. His award winning magic includes the Gold Medal for the International Stage Magic Champion at the World Magic Seminar in Las Vegas, Three- time winner of the Award of Merit in Stage Magic at the IBM, he appears in many well known Las Vegas Casinos and just finished a long run as part of the World’s Greatest Magic show. He has achieved so much at a young age and has a huge future ahead of him. If you want to catch Dan’s work and are in the area then be sure to go to his upcoming show in Minnesota. Check out his website to find out more: www.AlteredRealityLive.com. Here are the two dates for these "trial runs" before they get ready for the big tour this spring. Friday September 12 2008 Fairmont Opera House 45 Downtown Plz, Fairmont, MN 56031 SHOW TIME: 7PM ............................................. Saturday September 13 2008 Bernie Aaker Auditorium 114 N. Holcombe Ave, Litchfield, MN 55355 Show Times: 3 pm and 7 pm Tickets are $10 for general admission and $20 for VIP admission. And now - on with the interview. Paul - Your character on stage is very unique, what influences your magic and your performing style? Dan - I have to be honest I'm not really sure. I remember as a kid always cheering for the villains in movies and stuff. Captain Hook was my favorite bad guy of all time, so I think I drew a lot of influence from those kinds of characters. Of course they were the bad guys, but they had innocence about them, a comedic, creepy, and even Cooksey type persona that gave you a sense of ease and you could laugh with them and sometimes at them. I think I unintentionally drew inspiration from Captain Hook, the Riddler from Batman, Beetlejuice, etc, guys like that. I am most influenced by other entertainment media and art that I pursue on the side. I'm a huge fan of Quinten Terrentino and have been for as long as I can remember. I remember when my sister brought home Pulp Fiction and I watched it, I was too young to get most of it, but I could feel something about it was genius in how he makes his movies, writes his stories and plots, etc. Like I said I didn't really consciously understand it, but I know I felt something and wanted to do something like that with magic by making these situations etc. One of my favorite scenes is in Reservoir Dogs when Michael Madson is about to cut off the police officer's ear while dancing to “Stuck in the Middle With You”. I thought it was sooooo brilliant and I knew I wanted to create that kind of awkward uncomfortable curiosity that you couldn't tear your eyes away from. That became the inspiration for the lifesaver trick I do. I could go on forever about the movies I enjoy and other performance artists like Parson's Dance Company, etc. I suppose many of you are waiting to hear what magicians have influenced me, to be honest, not many. But if I had to name a few they'd have to be David Copperfield, Joseph Gabriel, Richiardi, Neil Foster, Tom and Sherri, Cardini, Vito Lupo, Marshall Brodien, Jay Marshall, David Williamson, and probably Ayala. -------------------------------------------- 9. ‘World Festival Of Magic’ Tour Of Australia 2008 -------------------------------------------- Message from Gene McCarthy Dates & Venue - Town - Show times Friday 12th September - Cairns - 1:00pm & 6:00pm Cairns Civic Theatre Saturday 13th September - Off Sunday 14th September - Townsville - 12:30pm & 3:00pm Upper Ross PCYC Monday 15th September - Mackay - 6:30pm Mackay Entertainment Centre Tuesday 16th September - Off Wednesday 17th September - Rockhampton - 1:00pm & 7:30pm Pilbeam Theatre Thursday 18th September - Bundaberg - 6:30pm Moncrieff Theatre Friday 19th September - Travel Saturday 20th September - Nambour - 12:30pm & 4:30pm Nambour Civic Centre Sunday 21st September - Gold Coast - 1pm Conrad Jupiter’s Monday 22nd September - Toowoomba - 6:00pm Empire Theatre Tuesday 23rd September - Travel Wednesday 24th September - Travel Thursday 25th September - Off Friday 26th September - Lismore - 1:00pm & 4:00pm Lismore Workers Club Saturday 27th September - Brisbane - 1:00pm, 4:00pm & 7:00pm Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre Sunday 28th September Monday 29th September - Newcastle - 12:30pm, 4:00pm & 7:00pm Griffith Duncan Theatre Tuesday 30th September - Gosford - 1:00pm, 4:00pm & 7:00pm Central Coast Leagues Convention Centre Wednesday 1st October - Wollongong - 1:00pm, 4:30pm & 7pm Woonona Bulli RSL Thursday 2nd October Friday 3rd October - Canberra - 12:30pm, 4pm & 7pm Llewellyn Hall Saturday 4th October - Travel Sunday 5th October - Wagga Wagga - 1:00pm & 4:00pm Wagga Wagga Civic Theatre Monday 6th October Tuesday 7th October - Albury - 1:00pm & 5:00pm Albury Convention & Performing Arts Centre Wednesday 8th October - Travel Thursday 9th October - Off Friday 10th October - Off Saturday 11th October - Hurstville - 12:30pm Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre Sunday 12th October - Penrith - 12:30pm Lions Club of Hawkesbury - Bondi - 4:30pm Lions Club of Bondi - Bondi  - 7:00pm Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre Monday 13th October - Travel Tuesday 14th October- Shepparton - 1pm Eastbank Centre Wednesday 15th October - Ballarat - 1:00pm & 5:00pm University of Ballarat Thursday 16th October - Travel Friday 17th October - Off Saturday 18th October - Melbourne - 12:00pm, 3:00pm & 6:00pm Festival Hall Sunday 19th October - Bendigo - 6:30pm Schweppes Centre Monday 20th October - Geelong - 5:00pm The Arena Tuesday 21st October - Travel Wednesday 22nd October - Travel Thursday 23rd October - Off Friday 24th October - Launceston - 1:00pm & 6:00pm Theatre North Saturday 25th October - Burnie - 2:00pm Burnie Civic Centre Sunday 26th October - Hobart - 1:30pm & 4:30pm Wrest Point Monday 27th October - Devonport - 1:00pm & 5:30pm Devonport Entertainment & Convention Centre Tuesday 28th October - Travel Wednesday 29th October - Off Thursday 30th October - Mildura - 6:30pm St. Joseph’s College Mildura. Le Grand David Magic Company Celebrating Its 33rd Year -------------------------------------------- Message from Henry Lewis (UK) What an achievement!. Le Grand David Spectacular Magic Company will be celebrating its thirty- third year of continuous performance of stage magic on September 21st at the Cabot Theatre, Beverly. Purchased by Cesareo Pelaez and his magic company on August 12th 1976 . A short distance from Boston MA This truly spectacular show with wonderful colour, elaborate costumes and music that adds to the enchantment of a memorable magical theatre experience should be seen by all those who claim to support the art and skill and performance of 'classical magic'. Cesareo Pelaez, David Bull and the supporting members have put a life times work and experience into the venture. Top leading magicians who have seen the show have acclaimed it a wonder of modern theatrical magic. I have seen the show many times over many years at both the Cabot and Larcom theatres so beautifully restored. If you love magic as much as I do you must journey to Beverly, you will not be disappointed. May it continue forever. -------------------------------------------- 11. The trip will be about 10 days in total I estimate the costs will be:- Flights $1500 Hotel $75 - $150 per night FISM Registration $650 Tours $200-300 sales@taylorsmagicshop.com.au -------------------------------------------- 13. The downside is unfortunately I don’t have enough time to be doing any lectures while I am in Vegas or California, so my apologies for those who were wanting to see me lecture this trip. Next time I promise I will come over specifically for a lecture tour. This trip my family is coming with me and we are having a holiday and doing the tourist thing with the kids, but I’ll be sure to catch up with a few friends while I’m over there. Correct And Fastest Removal Of The Costumes -------------------------------------------- Message from Lee Alex I have been booked to give this lecture in England at the end of January 2009. This is a rare visit to the UK, as although I am British I have been based out of Istanbul, Turkey for the past nine years. The seminar gives a basic introduction into quick change with revolutionary methods that can be replicated by magicians who do not wish to make a complete quick change act. The seminar is interactive presented first with a show of costumes and the colour change waistcoat, followed by explanations of the costumes which is done by dressing members of the audience in individual costumes. Finally the volunteers are taught the correct and fastest removal of the costumes. This approach gives people the chance first hand to experience quick change, for many for the first time. The seminar includes a complete expose of the Colour Change Waistcoat with first hand tips on how to really perform this effect. Any other clubs in the UK who are interested in booking the lecture may write direct to info@magicwaistcoat.com Parties outside of the UK (especially the States are also welcome to enquire availability) Thank you for a great service and I look forward to receiving the e-zine once again. Yours magically, Lee Alex http://www.magicwaistcoat.com -------------------------------------------- 18.
