John Moehring Editor Of MUM Magazine Retiring -------------------------------------------- Message from Maria Ibâñez National President Society of American Magicians John Moehring, MUM Editor has decided to retire when his contract expires this year on July 31, 2008. He will remain through a transition period through the end of the year. As President, I have appointed a search committee to fill the position. The search committee is made up of the same three Past National Presidents who originally found and negotiated with John three years ago, they are Craig Dickson, Richard Dooley and Gary Hughes. In the next few days there will be an application form and instructions for applying which will be posted on the home page of the S.A.M. website; you may visit www.magicsam.com to download an application if you are interested in applying. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. I wish John the very best in the future and thank him for the outstanding job he has done with the M-U-M; in my book he has been an editor extraordinaire. -------------------------------------------- 3. 1953 Movie Houdini -------------------------------------------- Message from Richard Walls (NZ) Although it has been available on a Taiwan label for some time, the recent spate of movies featuring magic themes may have encouraged Paramount to finally release the 1953 movie HOUDINI starring Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh on the shiny disc. While it is certainly not a true-life biography of the master - and has never claimed to be - it remains a very entertaining movie with then husband and wife Curtis and Leigh (the dazzling Hollywood couple of the time) as Harry and Bess. Due for release in region 1 (USA/Canada) on 3 June @ US$14.95 (the Amazon price) or thereabouts. Given Paramount's voluminous release of back catalogue titles in most markets, we should see it out in region 4 (Australia and New Zealand) before long. -------------------------------------------- 4. Bev Bergeron And Don Arthur To Be Honored -------------------------------------------- Message from Dan Stapleton (US) May 27 will be an evening tribute to two of Orlando's (Florida) innovators of magic. Bev Bergeron and Don Arthur will be honored at 7:00pm at the Collage Park Baptist Church banquet hall in Orlando. The two hour event is free and open to all magicians, friends, family, past co-workers and fans of Bev's and Don's. Video clips of Bev's performance on the Red Skelton television show, clips of him (as Rebo the Clown) on Magic Circus and the Magic Land of Alakazam, Walt Disney World's Diamond Horse Show Revue and a retro of his life will be discussed. Perhaps he will even perform one of his signature pieces. Don will discuss his life with legend The Great Virgil, talk about his book "Illusions in the Round" and talk about touring his show in Alaska, Bermuda, Aruba, etc. He will also discuss his being Clown Magic teacher for Ringling Bros. Circus. The evening is hosted by Dan Stapleton and for more info call Dan at (407) 491-3287. Any friends or fans of Bev's or Don's can email Dan a testimony to magicdanstap4u@aol.com -------------------------------------------- 5. Criss Angel Show In Las Vegas Named After Houdini Legend -------------------------------------------- Message from Scott Alcalay The long-hyped Cirque du Soleil-Criss Angel production now has a name. Producers say "Criss Angel Believe" will open Sept. 12 at the Luxor hotel-casino on the Las Vegas Strip. Previews begin Sept. 1. Tickets went on sale Thursday for casino VIPs and Angel fan club members. Producers say the show takes its name from a Harry Houdini legend. The magician and escape artist is said to have designated a code word for communicating with him after his death. The word was "believe." Producers say Angel will star in the show as a "surreal, enigmatic Victorian noble." The 40-year-old magician and illusionist is best known for his A&E series "Mindfreak." -------------------------------------------- 6. Remarkable Magic #48 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message from Nick Lewin (US) Remarkable Magic #48. Chipper Lowell: master of mayhem. I am not sure how long I have known Chipper. When we recently performed together in Cape Cod I remarked that I knew him back when he was Chip. He looked back at me and immediately responded that he had known me since I was Nicholas. That kind of says it all. Chipper never had much choice in the career department. His parents were both working with the Ringling Brothers Circus when Chipper was born. Dad was a clown and mother an acrobat and the young Chipper traveled with them, sleeping under the make-up table. Not quite born in a trunk, but pretty darn close. No wonder that Chipper grew up to be such a larger than life entertainer. It isn't easy to classify exactly what Lowell actually does onstage. Sure he juggles, does magic and is very funny onstage but there is a whole area of his performance that isn't quite as easy to come to terms with. If I had to put a name too it (always a thankless pursuit!) I guess it would be showmanship. Sometimes stand-up comedians use the word 'showman' in a faintly derogatory manner about variety performers who get much more reaction than they expect them to get. What these stand-up acts fail to grasp is the alchemy that a really likeable performer can achieve with his rapport with his audience. It is very special. Lowell has worked every kind of venue and it really shows in the way he takes control of the audience. When you sit down and chat with Chipper you get an insight into how carefully planned his apparently chaotic performance is. He has learned everything you need to know about structure and then allowed his crazy onstage persona to run wild with all that knowledge Chipper's act just doesn't stop; he says and does more funny things per minute than 3 or 4 strong acts bundled into one. He is a whirlwind of non-stop comedy and action. Some of Chipper's throwaway gags could be stretched into feature pieces in another show but with Chip they blend seamlessly into one of the fastest paced shows you will ever see and become comedic vapor trail. Lowell is now performing a theater show called 'Blink' that can be seen in performing arts centers across America. Chipper has a unique approach to performing that isn't easily expressed in words but needs to be experienced. If you haven't seen his show do yourself and check him out. As always send any bricks or bouquets to nicklewin1@mac.com and check out my website at www.nicklewin.com -------------------------------------------- 7. Getting Them To Remember You! (Part 2) - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message from Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com In a previous article I started to discuss the importance of getting your client/s to remember who you are and how to generally go about this in the way you perform and conduct yourself. I would like to continue on that topic but dive deeper into some specific visual things you can do within the show itself to get them to remember you? Are there things we can do as magicians within the context of the show environment that can get people to recall our brand name and message? - One of the best things you can do for yourself at your show to get remembered is to 1) have a well established brand identity (logo) and 2) use it consistently throughout. One of the best areas for this is a simple sign that can go on your table. I have one with my logo on it that has Velcro. This attaches to my suitcase table and I can also customize it at the bottom by placing the name of the birthday child as well to not only get them to remember me but add value for the client also. - I also do a simple, fun and effective name game as a warm up to the show. I explain this routine in detail in a previous article. In essence it is an easy way to empower the children by always getting your name wrong and the kids correcting you at the start of the show. It gets the kids interacting early on and it really gets everyone in the audience knowing your name right from the start. - I also extend my name recognition into the things I hand out to the kids during the show itself. As we perform, I always reward the helpers with things such as our Coloring Flyer or Magicians Assistant Certificates. Each one of these has our name clearly printed on it as well as our website and contact information. I also make it a habit to say: "This is our way of saying thank you for helping at the Kyle and Kelly magic show". This also extends the brand name and gets them to remember you at the show and also every time they look at the give-away. - I use a digital camera occasionally in my shows. I always have one behind my table ready to go when I need it. Many times you will find a parent or client wishing they had their camera and they do not have one with them. This is a great way to be a solutions provider by allowing them to use yours. If I float the birthday child at the end of the show, I make sure to have a picture taken as the child is suspended. This then gets emailed to the client as part of a thank you when I get home. This further extends who I am and my brand after I am long gone. - I always carry with me a thank you kit that is given to the client at the event. This is a thank you letter on my stationary and comes with a simple evaluation form and a SASE on my branded envelopes. This is very easy to do but the benefits of doing it are huge. You really leave a lasting impression in their mind and they will remember you for it. - Another thing others have done is to get a vertical banner created for their shows. These can be done now at an affordable price and the vertical banner can be customized to your show with any design you give them. This is a great way to have your name or brand identity placed on the banner and used for shows you do. They come with their own holders and pack down fairly flat. - If you give out any wands or magic kits to the kids, you can brand yourself well by repackaging the products to brand yourself better. A nice full color sticker with your logo on it can work really well for smaller items like magic wands etc. Business card magnets are also very easy to do and you can get them so that your business card can just be stuck to it. It makes a nice give away item to the client at the end of the show as part of your thank you kit. - Another fun way to get them to remember you during and after the show is to use a comedy clapper board. I talked about this in a previous article but it is a lot of fun, gets laughs and serves a purpose. I have a clapper board of which on it I placed my name and website address. Now whenever anyone takes a photo from the audience, I can stop and do a comedy gag with the clapper board suggesting it is OK to take photos but we want to be sure the photos come out really good. Then bring out the clapper board and pose for the shot. It gets a great laugh but it also gets the name out and your information is on their photo when they get it developed. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. -------------------------------------------- 8. Escape Artist Harry Houdini Set To Sing On Broadway -------------------------------------------- Message from Scott Alcalay The man can get out of a locked trunk but can he sing and dance? Escape artist Harry Houdini will be the subject of a Broadway musical that will open in New York in spring 2010, producers Scott Sanders and David Rockwell announced Thursday. No casting yet, but "Houdini" will feature music by Danny Elfman, who has scored such Tim Burton films as "Beetlejuice" and "Edward Scissorhands," and lyrics by David Yazbek, who wrote the scores for the Broadway musicals "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" and "The Full Monty." The book for "Houdini" is by Kurt Andersen, an editor and co-founder of Spy magazine as well as a one-time editor-in-chief of New York magazine. Jack O'Brien, the Tony-winning director of "The Coast of Utopia," "Henry IV" at Lincoln Center and "Hairspray," will direct. Rockwell will also design the show's sets. "Houdini is an amazing, iconic figure who continues to captivate our imagination more than 80 years after his death," Sanders said. "His colorful world defines the theatrical and, combined with this remarkable creative team, will make for a fascinating and entertaining musical." -------------------------------------------- 9. Magically, Dan Stapleton FMA President -------------------------------------------- 10. Marco Gareh - Broken Wand -------------------------------------------- Message from John Calvert (US) A bright light has, this morning, been extinguished, leaving a dark corner in the lives of many friends and relatives. Sonja was with Dad in the early hours of this morning when he slipped away quietly. He was Marco right to the end. The service will be at Pentrebychan Crematorium on Tuesday, 22nd, at 12 noon. I first met Marco Gareh in 1963 in Bombay. He said to me, "John Calvert I'm going to make a set of cigarette droppers for you that I think you will like". He was so right, they are fantastic, and I use them to this very day. Marco was the President of the Bombay Magic Circle and also the manager of a British firm in India. Marco was an excellent craftsman and fashioned many different magic props. Ray Goulet who owns the Magic Art Studio in Watertown, Massachusetts, has been marketing Marco's Cigarette Droppers, ever since I introduced the two gentlemen some 30 years ago. After the IBM Convention in Eastbourne, Tammy, my daughter Madren and I took a trip to Glasgow where we met Scotland's foremost magician, Alex Proctor and his wife, Anna. Marco in the meantime had moved back to his home in Wales. We were anxious to see him, so Alex accommodated by driving us all the way to Wales to visit our old friend, where we were treated as royal guests. We enjoyed his tales of magic and delighted to meet a few of his friends and relatives. To our surprise when we went to pay our hotel bill the next morning, Marco had already picked it up. He was that kind of a loving and generous man. Two years have passed and by strange co-incidence, Alex Proctor and his wife, Anna, were visiting us at our home here in Bowling Green, Kentucky. While they were still visiting us a couple of days ago, I thought of Marco and remembered the trip with Alex to visit him in Wales. I mentioned to Alex, we should phone Marco or send him an email. Going to our computer we were stunned. There was a message from Marco's son stating that his father was not well. Not eating or drinking any liquids. The next report we received from his son follows. "A bright light has, this morning, been extinguished, leaving a dark corner in the lives of friends and relatives". Marco was a great friend of mine and a friend of the entire magic fraternity. I shall always miss him and cherish every moment I was privileged to spend with him since 1963 when we first met in Bombay. Marco Gareh was truly a treasure to the art of Magic. 1912 - 2008 John Calvert -------------------------------------------- 11. L.A.
