Editor's Message -------------------------------------------- Richard Webster is home again after a quick trip to Melbourne and Sydney. Richard spoke at the National Speakers Association convention, launched his latest book, and promoted a set of CDs on how to write a book. He also managed to fit a private magic workshop on his visit to Australia. It's hard to believe that Richard has published 95 books in total, of which 4 are on magic and 24 on Mentalism. New Zealand magician Theo De Leeuw went into Waikato hospital last week for a knee replacement. This went well, but he has had respiratory complications preventing him from leaving. He is likely to remain there for at least another week. You can visit him in Ward 6 Room 8, call him on 0274 439931 or e-mail him: theo.noeline@xtra.co.nz. The Waikato Magic Circle wish him all the best. Remember if you have any magic news drop me a line: AW@Alan-Watson.com -------------------------------------------- 2. FISM And Human Rights -------------------------------------------- Message from Eric Eswin International President International Gerrit Brengman International Vice-President Domenico Dante International Vice-President FISM Statement In the slipstream of the persistent protests against the recent situation in Tibet and other human rights issues in China, an anonymous PowerPoint presentation is circulating among magicians and magic societies. Its main purpose is to discourage participation in the FISM World Championships of Magic 2009 in Beijing. Although the FISM logo and some copy-right pictures owned by FISM are used (without FISM's consent), the presentation is not originating from FISM and does not represent FISM's opinion or policy. The Presidium, representing FISM, prefers to distance itself from its contents and condemns its anonymous intrusion into the magic scene. Although FISM is not a political body, whose task it is to fight against violations of human rights issues, it cannot and should not ignore the political opinions in a public debate. FISM should express its position clearly. In discussions about the boycott of a sports event such as the Olympic Games or of a cultural event like the World Championships of Magic the antagonists for and against cannot convince each other, as their arguments are only correct and valid when one believes in them. Belief systems of people can differ however. FISM's belief and policy are as follows: First of all the Presidium strongly disapproves of any form of violation of human rights and of any restriction of democratic freedoms, by any group of people or by any country or its leaders. Furthermore we believe that ignoring people with a different historical background and culture or countries situated in a different geopolitical environment, even when it comes to human rights issues, will surely not contribute to any improvement. Remaining in contact, however, can potentially create possibilities for mutual respect and understanding and may open ways for the improvement of human rights issues. We are not simply suggesting that entrusting the hosting and organization of the FISM World Championship of Magic to the China Magic Art Society will improve human rights issues in China. We are convinced, however, that ignoring the Chinese magicians is not only contradictory to the spirit of the FISM but will certainly not contribute to any improvement to whatever situation in their country. It is FISM's responsibility to see to it that a FISM World Championship of Magic will be organized in the best possible way, in the true spirit of FISM and to the benefit of the Art of Magic and its performers. We know that the China Magic Art Society and the Organizing Committee of the FISM World Championships of Magic 2009, have been working hard, diligently and positively and will continue to do so, to guarantee a respectful and truly wonderful World Championship of Magic. -------------------------------------------- 3. Regarding The Sale Of The Magic Castle Property -------------------------------------------- Message from Milt Larsen After President Gay Blackstone announced that the Glover family had decided on the new buyer many of our members wanted to know why the details of the sale were not given to the membership. The fact is that the sale is a complicated matter between the buyer and the seller. It is a very complicated sale due to the multimillion dollar price and also issues of zoning, property titles and many other points of negotiation. Since we (Academy of Magical Arts and Magic Castles Inc) have nothing to do with the sale of the family property we have no information about the details of a sale. When the deal is finalized we will then meet with the new buyers and work out details of a new, hopefully long term lease with them. This process may take many months and any details will be announced when they become facts instead of rumors. We look forward to working with the new owners and, we understand, they are looking forward to a great relationship with the Magic Castle. Milt -------------------------------------------- 4. Secret Life Of Siegfried And Roy -------------------------------------------- Message from Bill Bowers Today's New York Post, (Friday April 4, 2008) columnist Cindy Adams announced a book titled "The Secret life of Siegfried and Roy: How the Tigers Tamed Las Vegas", written by Jimmy Lavery, Jim Mydlach, and Henrietta Tiefenthaler. The book details (turn away kids) romps with young guys on far-off beaches and foursomes with Liberace and his very alive boy chauffeur. It says Siegfried feared animals, never held the leashes, and animal trainer Roy basically never knew from magic tricks. Also explained are body doubles, and slim concealed parts. Inch by inch we are told how these 60-something year olds were losing it before the attack. "Exhaused...yearning to relax and party with pals...they began taking more vacations..spent less time with the cats...could no longer remember their names" Page 195 To Roy "The attack actually came as a relief" It meant they'd have to retire. The publisher is Phoenix. Also mentioned in the same article, Carmen Electra's very first gig was at a magic show at a theme park in Ohio. " I was the girl they sawed in half". -------------------------------------------- 5. Viking/CW Will Not Be Relocating Any Time Soon -------------------------------------------- Message from George Robinson Jr. Well, it seems that luck is not with us these days. The buyer of our property in Texas has backed out due to funding problems so we will not be moving to Mo. any time soon. Please disregard our previous notice and direct all business information to our old Edinburg, Texas address. Sorry for the confusion. Remarkable Magic #47 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message from Nick Lewin (US) Remarkable Magic #47. The gloves are off now. Last week I attended the 20th Cape Cod Magic Conclave organized by Hank Lee. The event was a blast from first to last and beautifully organized by Hank and his many elves. About 400 magicians gathered to enjoy a highly varied and eclectic weekend of performance and lectures. During the weekend I was delighted to meet up again with Peter Samelson. The last time I had worked with Peter was probably thirty years ago when he was the host of a television show filmed at the Magic Cellar in San Francisco. I really don't remember much about the material Peter performed during that taping. I do remember that he performed all the magic wearing a pair of white gloves that gave him a most distinctive appearance. I also remember being very impressed with the unusual and thoughtful presentation of the various effects he used. Thirty odd years later I was once again highly appreciative of his carefully planned and presented magic. The theatrical spirit that Samelson infuses into his work is individual and highly effective. Peter performed some very strong magic that he made all his own by adding this secret ingredient. All the effects featured in Peter's show were treated like minor theatrical presentations. Each one was a self-contained three-act play that had an emotional arc and a specific mood. Best of all there wasn't any evidence of that kind of thinking worn on his sleeve to be admired by the audience. It was rather subtle and all the more powerful for being so. I suspect that the Snowstorm In China is the single most overexposed trick in magic at this time and has been turned into a sentimental exercise by many magicians. These performers should all sit down and watch the way Peter achieves the reaction that they are working for. He doesn't do it by using enough extra paper to constitute an ecological disaster or enough saccharin to raise your blood sugar level. He does it with something you don't see enough of in the magic world; a little bit of good acting! Bravo. If space permitted I would like to tell you about his handling of the Mutilated Parasol and the Gypsy Thread, as they were superb. However Peter can be seen frequently in "Monday Night Magic" which is New York's longest running Off-Broadway magic show. If you are visiting the Big Apple why not do yourself a favor and catch him live. The ticket information for Monday Night Magic is info@magicalnights.com As always send any bricks or bouquets to nicklewin1@mac.com and check out my website at www.nicklewin.com -------------------------------------------- 7. Getting Them To Remember You! (Part 1) - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message from Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com The first step to any success in any magic business is the realization that there is a reason it is called show "Business". A good business-minded magician will want and seek to get their name out there. But getting the name out there is just not enough if you struggle to get them to remember who you are after the show is over. With this article I want to try and address some of these issues and give you some tips and suggestions on how you can conquer this dilemma. Getting them to remember who you are is the key to word of mouth advertising but it is also the key to repeat business and a successful referral system. People simply have to recall your name and who you are as well as what that name means and implies to them. This is at essence creating and extending a brand message. That brand is YOU and what YOU represent whenever someone hears your brand name. So how do you successfully go about getting them to remember you? - First and foremost you must have a quality show. This is a given but something many folks do seem to forget. You need to provide a show that fits and meets the needs of the client and market you are working. There is nothing more powerful in getting you remembered then a great show that really works and plays well. - You must also strive to be a professional at all times. This is the single most forgotten aspect of what we do that I see constantly. You need to always remember that being a professional does not start when the curtains open and end when they close. You must strive to be a professional always and in every part of the way you conduct yourself and conduct your magic business. Professionals get remembered. - You also must learn to succeed in being seen far more than just another product. In many cases you are seen as Magician A that is not different then magician B or C or D. In the minds of a client, you may be nothing more than a service they are buying. To get remembered you must get them to see you as who YOU are. That you have value to them and that value is what sets you apart. The best way of doing this is learning to listen to your clients and to then lock in on the things they are telling you. Every single client has problems and needs they want solutions for. Learn what these needs are and then find solutions to solve those needs. When you start to do this, then you become a solutions provider and not just a magician. They WILL remember your name and come back to you time and again. - Go the extra mile. So many of us go to a show and decide that we are only there to perform and anything else asked of us is beyond us. There are so many little things that we each can do at an event or gig that does and will get you remembered. It can be as simple as going around and greeting and shaking hands to people you meet and really being interested in what they have to say. It can be helping someone move a table or set up a few chairs after your show is all set up and done. There are so many little things that you do not have to do but that you SHOULD do. These little things will also get you remembered. - When the gig is over, remember it never is over. By this I simply mean that you should never forget your past client. These are the folks that can get you remembered and known to others. They are walking billboards for you. So when you get home, send them a thank you card and take the time to hand write it letting them know how much fun you had at their event. How many service providers do you know that do this? You certainly will remember someone who does. I hope this start to get you thinking. In part 2 I will dive deeper into some specific ideas, tips and visual suggestions of what you can actually do in the content of the show itself to get you remembered. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. Entertaining On The Ocean #27 - Paul Romhany -------------------------------------------- Message from Paul Romhany (NZ) www.chaplinmagic.com Cruise Trends The response from my article last week was great. It seems there are a number of magicians who would like to cruise with their families just for a holiday and see what cruising is all about. With so many great deals on at the moment with cruising it's a great way to spend time with your family and I know will turn in to a fantastic holiday. I thought this week I would continue with a few hints and tips for those that want to cruise. This also applies to those magicians who are thinking about working on ships. Next week Natalie and I head back out, we are booked to work on one of the largest ships in the world, a new one that is larger than the QMII with 40000 passengers!! These are mighty heady days for the cruise industry. Twice as many people are cruising today as a decade ago, and that number is expected to double again in the next ten years. Boom times mean more money to invest in bigger and better ships, offer more services, and add more spectacular amenities all in an effort to attract even more passengers. And there are plenty more passengers to be had, since less than 20% of Americans have ever taken a cruise. The family market, with all those kids who can be converted to cruise lovers, makes for a particularly covetable customer base. Dreaming of a family cruise? Information is power. If you know where the industry is heading, you can use these trends to plan smart and get more value from your vacation. Here are some of the biggest trends in cruising and who they benefit: Gigantinormous Ships. These days, cruisers are living large. The newest, flashiest ships are all supersized. Among the megaships launched in 2007: The 2,900-passenger Carnival Freedom, the 3,100-passenger Emerald Princess, and Royal Caribbean's 4,000-passenger Liberty of the Seas, which ties with her sister ship, Freedom of the Seas, as the world's largest cruise ship. A third sister, Independence of the Seas, will debut in 2008. Good for: Families with school-age kids and up. Bigger ships mean more space for fun activities think rock-climbing walls, ice rinks, mini golf courses, bowling alleys, swimming pools with elaborate waterslides, and even boxing rings. Surfing simulators, like the ones on Royal Caribbean's Freedom of the Seas and Liberty of the Seas, will appeal chiefly to older kids looking for an adrenaline rush. Bad for: Families with babies, toddlers, and preschoolers. Not only are little kids unable to take advantage of the terrific array of amenities, but extra long decks and corridors mean endless walking to get from cabin to dining room to swimming pool to nursery, all with baby in tow. Also, older kids are better equipped to deal with one of the biggest bummers of these huge ships: Waiting in line to do just about everything, from getting into the dining room to visiting the kids activity centers to getting on and off the ship at the ports of call. As one cruise-going reader put it, You definitely feel like cattle much of the time. Think these ships sound big? We aint seen nothing yet. In 2009, Norwegian Cruise Line will introduce the first of three 4,200-passenger ships. Carnival is planning to build its largest ships yet, a pair of 3,600-passenger mammoths, set to debut in 2009 and 2010. Celebrity, Holland America, and MSC Cruises are all building larger ships than they currently have, and Royal Caribbean is planning to introduce a future Genesis class of ships that will carry 5,400 passengers each. A Wider Choice of Homeports. With cruises departing from nearly two dozen different US ports, passengers have a better chance of finding a cruise that departs from a city close to home. Watch for more homeports to crop up, as cities seek to woo the major cruise lines by building newer, flashier cruise terminals. An impressive example is Norfolks sleek, $36-million terminal, complete with a soaring rotunda and super views of the Elizabeth River. Good for: Folks who live outside the traditional cruise port regions. By choosing a cruise that departs from a city within driving distance of your hometown, you can save big bucks on airfare, apply those savings toward a cabin upgrade or onboard activities. For those living in Europe, you will also have a larger choice of cruise ships. Most major cruise lines are now running pretty much all year cruise ships in and out of Europe. Shorter Cruises. Cruisings popularity and the increase in demand led to a wider choice in itineraries. For decades, the industry standard had been the seven-night cruise, but you can now find many options for three, four, and five nights. Good for: First-time cruisers and families on a budget. Maybe your vacation fund just isn't cushy enough for a seven-night itinerary. Or perhaps you're unsure whether your family will even enjoy life at sea. Fewer days mean a lower price tag. A Pricier Alaska. Last August, Alaska residents voted to impose a double whammy on cruisers. Each cruise passenger must pay an additional $50 in taxes and fees, and the cruise lines must also cough up steep taxes and fees. The cruise lines must choose between three evils: Pass their additional expenses on to the consumer (if so, count on paying another $50 per passenger, doubling the total added cost to $100 per passenger), absorb the extra taxes and fees themselves, or cut back on their sailings. Good for: Alaskans, presumably. Bad for: Everyone else. These new taxes and fees could add up to $400 for a family of four, making an already-expensive destination even chillier. Europe en Famille. Taking a cruise in the Old World used to be a grown-up experience, but some of the most family-oriented lines are now offering European itineraries. This summer, the Disney Magic is offering its first 10- and 11-night Mediterranean itineraries, hopping between ports in Spain, France, and Italy. Also this year, the shiny new Carnival Freedom will offer cruises of the Greek isles. Good for: Families with tweens and teens. The added expense of airfare means that these cruises are once-in-a-lifetime splurges for most families. Consequently, it makes sense to wait until kids are mature enough to appreciate the historical and cultural richness that Europe delivers. Bad for: Families with small children. Parents will find it difficult to justify spending thousands on airfare plus thousands more on the cruise when kids are too young to know the difference between Rome, Italy, and Rome, New York. Wireless Access. Disney recently announced that it will be joining the list of cruise lines offering wireless voice communications services. The upshot: You can now use your cell phone to make ship-to-shore calls for about half of what it used to cost to use the satellite phone in your cabin. Cell phones work only while the ship is at sea, and callers are billed by their cell phone company at international roaming rates. Disney is setting itself apart by limiting cell phone use to cabins, whereas some other cruise lines allow passengers to make and receive calls from pool decks and other public areas. And while Internet café had long been a staple on cruise ships, now Wi-Fi service is fast spreading from hotspots to all areas of the ship. Good for: People who can't bear to be disconnected from the world while on vacation. You can check in with the office and keep up with e-mails on your laptop without leaving your cabin. Bad for: Folks who want to unplug. Now there's nowhere to hide. If you really want to chill out, tell your boss that you're leaving your Blackberry chez vous. Healthier Menus. Catching the wave that's sweeping our nations restaurants, Royal Caribbean will eliminate all trans fat from its food offerings throughout its entire fleet. Cunard already offers Canyon Ranch Spa Selections on its menus, and Royal Caribbean will be rolling out a new, health-focused line of menu choices called Vitality. Look for other major lines to revamp their menus with healthier options faster than you can say all-you-can-eat buffet. Good for: Our arteries. Audience Silenced When Beer Bottle Trick Goes Wrong -------------------------------------------- Australian Herald A MAGIC trick went "horribly wrong" at a weekend Melbourne Comedy Festival show, but audience members had to sign a confidentiality agreement to stop those revealing details. The trick went awry during the Something About Razorblades and Nails show at the Northcote Town Hall on Sunday night. An audience member, who wished to remain anonymous, told Confidential that "something went horribly wrong". She said all members of the audience had to sign a "secrecy agreement" before they left the venue preventing them from telling anyone what happened. The audience member said the trick that went wrong involved a broken beer bottle, but she would not elaborate. In the show, magician Tim Ellis "swallows razorblades, pushes needles through his skin and does whatever the evil Sudoku tells him to". Ellis confirmed a trick did not go to plan but said he could not reveal any more details "out of respect for the others involved". "It has never happened before and it is not something we would expect to happen again," he said. "No one was seriously hurt. "A lot of magicians have secrecy agreements on stand-by in case something goes wrong." The Northcote Town Hall said it did not know of any incidents occurring, and the festival declined to comment. -------------------------------------------- 11. Magic Trick Went Horribly Wrong - Did It? -------------------------------------------- Message from Tim Ellis (Aust) You might have read the above story in the Herald-Sun today. Here is the text of the story, along with my notations: A MAGIC trick went "horribly wrong" at a weekend Melbourne Comedy Festival show, but audience members had to sign a confidentiality agreement to stop them revealing details. (No, nobody signed anything). The trick went awry during the Something About Razorblades and Nails show at the Northcote Town Hall on Sunday night. (The show is called Something About Needles & Razorblades. There are no nails in it). (There is a trick that involves a broken beer bottle. Magicians know that, thanks to Mr Nielsen, it cannot ever go wrong. We do show clips of the trick going wrong, but it doesn't go wrong live on stage). In the show, magician Tim Ellis "swallows razorblades, pushes needles through his skin and does whatever the evil Sudoku tells him to". Ellis confirmed a trick did not go to plan but said he could not reveal any more details "out of respect for the others involved". (Yes. To be precise. I messed up 'Flesh Wound'. but I was trying to keep that quiet as you do when you mess up a trick - but the only "others" were Tim You, Tristan and John Cairns. Fellow magicians who I didn't want to know I messed it up). "It has never happened before and it is not something we would expect to happen again," he said. (But it did, last night). "No one was seriously hurt". (I came very close as I had to slice into my arm with the sharp edge of the blade rather than the blunt edge. And it is very, very sharp). "A lot of magicians have secrecy agreements on stand-by in case something goes wrong." (The reporter kept asking me about secrecy agreements, so I humoured her with this statement. Though, I think Copperfield probably has some legal documents handy backstage...) The Northcote Town Hall said it did not know of any incidents occurring, and the festival declined to comment. (Northcote didn't know, because nothing like what the reporter was told ever happened. The Comedy Festival declined to comment because they had no idea. Of the six audience members present on Sunday night, four were magicians, and the two laymen participated in INSANITY (the beer bottle trick) but it went fine and no-one was hurt) I do have a feeling that the reporter was given some false information. However, if it leads to an increase in ticket sales... I guess we'll see how far the story has spread when I ask for six volunteers tomorrow night! For those who are interested, I blogged every day of The Comedy Festival giving behind the scenes insight into our two shows. Incidentally, both shows got great audience responses. Illusionarium (the family show) had several sold out and oversold crowds plus it got a great review from 'The Groggy Squirrel' website who described the magic as "awesome". Something About Needles & Razorblades got smaller attendances but those who saw the show absolutely raved about it. Not bad considering its extreme content. (The "horribly wrong" story helped boost attendances. It originated in the Herald Sun and was repeated in The Australian, Google News, 3AW, JJJ, and blogs all over the web). Surprisingly, though attendances at this year's Comedy Festival are way, way down overall, we managed to make a profit! Both shows will return later in the year. Regarding FISM & Human Rights, you may be interested in the discussion here http://magicunlimited.typepad.com/magic_unlimited_with_elli/2008/04/fisms-official.html I'll be posting my thoughts on the blog in a day or two. -------------------------------------------- 12.
