Leader Pleads Guilty In Casino Scam -------------------------------------------- Article forwarded on by Bill Bowers By Richard Marosi, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer April 3, 2008 SAN DIEGO -- The leader of a crew that took casinos for about $7 million pleaded guilty Wednesday to racketeering conspiracy charges in what federal authorities have described as one of the largest cheating schemes ever busted. Phuong Quoc Truong, nicknamed Pai Gow John, ran a sophisticated operation that enlisted shady dealers to rig blackjack and mini-baccarat games and gamblers to place big bets, authorities said. The San Diego-based ring once won $868,000 in a 90-minute span by executing the "false shuffle," their trick of choice, according to the three-count indictment handed down last year in federal court in San Diego. Truong pleaded guilty, along with six others involved in the scheme. Twelve other suspects await trial. The ring, which included several former dealers from San Diego-area card clubs, targeted 16 casinos across the country. According to federal prosecutors, the scheme worked like this: A member of the crew, called the card recorder, would track the order of blackjack cards, relaying them with a hidden transmitter to an off-site associate who would enter the sequence into a computer. The bribed dealers would then perform false shuffles, creating a "slug" of unshuffled cards. The slug would be returned to the shoe, the device that holds the cards being dealt. When the slug cards were dealt in later rounds, the card recorder would signal associates at the table to dramatically increase their bets on hands the recorder knew would probably win. The off-site associate, using a card-tracking computer program, would relay when the odds were the greatest. "Executing the scheme in this fashion the . . . organization would frequently steal approximately $50,000 in approximately 10 minutes of play," the indictment states. Truong admitted in the plea agreement that he and his co-conspirators won up to $7 million from 2002 to 2007. Truong will forfeit two houses in the San Diego area, two properties in Vietnam, a 2001 Porsche Carrera and a Rolex Presidential watch, federal prosecutors said. Truong appeared to run a disciplined operation. There were regular training sessions to teach dealers how to do false shuffles without getting caught by casino security. Card recorders were drilled to perfect their card-counting skills, and players were trained to learn the cues indicating when they should place large bets. Sometimes, a card recorder or a dealer would make a mistake, leading to large losses. Members of the ring sometimes lost bets intentionally in order to avoid suspicion, prosecutors said. Among the casinos targeted were the Trump 29 Casino in Coachella, now known as the Spotlight 29 Casino, and the Sycuan Resort and Casino in El Cajon. The ring's biggest win came in the early morning of Oct. 22, 2005, at the Resorts East Chicago Hotel and Casino in Indiana. Truong and two others purchased about $39,000 in gambling chips at a mini-baccarat table, according to the indictment. After 90 minutes and a dealer's false shuffle, one of Truong's associates walked out with $906,000. Truong had been free on a $500,000 bond, with orders from a judge banning him from casinos. He faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. -------------------------------------------- 5. 100th Anniversary Of The Magic Club Vienna -------------------------------------------- Message from Magic Christian Dear magician friends, we would like to invite you to our 100th anniversary of the foundation of the Magic Club Vienna. Remarkable Magic #46 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message from Nick Lewin (US) Luna Shimada a triumph of substance and style. 'She is unmistakable, from her makeup to her costumes. She is exotic, forceful, and altogether feminine in her nature just as her name implies. She is of course, LUNA, daughter of legendary magician Shimada from Japan and Australian born beauty, Deanna.' I didn't actually write these words but I couldn't have put it any better. I first remember Luna Shimada as a young lady of great beauty and a quietly determined demeanor. We first met when I was producing a full-scale magic event for a corporate client in the beautiful Four Seasons hotel in Maui. Luna was acting as assistant to Shimada as he presented both his dove and parasol show. Since that time Luna has become a superb performer in her own right. She has managed to combine the exotic quality of her parent's show with her own unique vision. Luna has appeared in many showrooms around the world but it was in the Magic Castle that I first saw her perform her magic. I don't ever remember being as knocked out by any performer in the Palace of Mysteries. I certainly expected Luna to be good but what I hadn't expected were the elements of metaphysical drama she would bring to the stage. Her show incorporated magic, theater and a great deal of personal charisma. I found it amazing that this was the quiet young lady whom I remembered from Maui. Then I recalled that quiet determination I had noticed and it made sense. What I enjoy most about Luna's show is the skillful way she incorporates her enlightened views of feminist and spiritual topics into her work. It would be easy to be heavy handed about either one of them but Luna is far too much the artist to fall into any such trap. Instead she employs a holistic approach that allows the spectator to use their senses to explore the content written between the lines. It is a delight to watch a show that conveys a philosophy using subtlety rather than a sledgehammer. Luna has been featured on many network specials most recently being honored at the IMS awards. I suspect we will see her create a new and special niche in the media's coverage of the magical and mystical arts. She not only has something to say but she says it well: a great combo. I was pleased and proud to feature an interview with Luna on my TV series 'The Entertainment Files' and this footage can be accessed with the link at the end of this article. Luna can be seen performing some great magic with excerpts from her full show. I know her show doesn't look this way now, I don't think it is within Luna's nature to stand still for long, but it is a neat glimpse of an artist as 'a work in progress.' The Name Game! - Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message from Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com Ever want the kids to remember your name easily right from the start of your show and have a fun way to do it? That was a problem I was faced with a few years ago when I wanted an easy way for the kids to recall who I was, as well as my wife, and have a fun warm up to the show. I came up with this funny warm up I call "The Name Game" and I wanted to share it with you all. The idea is to have a warm up at the start of the show that is easy but aimed at 1) getting the children to interact with me and know it is OK to do so 2) empower the children as they correct me and get things right when I get them wrong and 3) really get every person in the audience to remember our names easily. It goes something like this: "Hi boys and girls and welcome to the show. Are you guys ready to have some fun? (Wait for response which usually is fairly timid because they have been told to behave and sit quietly by parents on the way to the show). Guess they are not ready to have fun. See boys and girls this is a fun-filled magic show. That means it is OK to hoot and holler and smile and clap really loud when you see something you like. So let's try that again. Are you guys ready to have some fun? WOW that was MUCH better." "Well I guess I should tell you who we are... So my name is ....um......er......awww... What is my name? Hmmmm (look at the sign on my suitcase table) Oh yeah! My name is Kelly and this here must be my friend Kyle (point to my wife and wait for the giggles to start). Wait a second.. That can't be right. Oh I must be Kyle and this must be Kelly. So on the count of 3 can we all say hi Kyle and Kelly? 1..2....3 (kids react)." "Perfect so now everyone here is ready and knows that we are going to have a GREAT time as my name is George and this is my friend Gertrude. (Wait for the laughs and kids to correct you). What?? It's not George and Gertrude? Raise your hand if you know. Perfect. How about you? It's Kyle and Kelly? Oh wow thanks for helping us out. That was great. So as I said my name is Peter Snodgrass and this is my friend Betty Burp. (Wait for the laughter and response" "Still not right huh? Well raise your hand if you can help me out. Well what is your name young lady? Tiffany. Nice to meet you and your name is? Bobby. You guys ready to have fun? Ok great I am all set now for my name is Tiffany and this is my friend Bobby (point to myself and my wife and more laughter)." "This is getting silly. I know how I can remember my name. I always keep these stickers in my table so I can write down my name to remember easily. So I am going to write Kyle here and Kelly for my good friend. (Place name stickers on shirt) OK so now I can know who I am. My name is (look down and shirt and read the name backwards) My name is ELYK. Oh silly me. I was reading it upside down. We are Kyle and Kelly and welcome to the show" "Now so that we can help remember who all of you are.. I have a few friends in the audience who are going to give each of you your very own cool and official Kyle and Kelly magic name tag." I carry with me "Hello my name is" stickers and before the show starts, I have the parent help me write the names down so they are all set and the parent/s help place them on the kids at this point in the routine. It is a very simple and easy a warm up but it does several important things for me. It gets the kids having fun right from the start and enjoying helping me to get things right. It gets them laughing and having a good time. It also gives the kids something fun they can wear as a souvenir and because I am 65% deaf in both ears, I developed this idea as a way for myself to be able to know the child's names when they come up to help me in my show. It is a fun warm up routine that gets them remembering you long after the show is over. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. -------------------------------------------- 8. Entertaining On The Ocean #26 - Paul Romhany -------------------------------------------- Message from Paul Romhany (NZ) www.chaplinmagic.com Preparing For Your Cruise Here are some helpful tips should you find yourself going on a cruise. These are things I've learnt over the past many years of travel. Prior to travel  First of all, 'stage' your outfits for evening-if the shower rod is convenient, hang them there. If not, get one of those things you hang over the closet door and hang up the outfits you'll be wearing to dinner each night. (Get the shoes out for each outfit, too.) Then-AND THIS IS IMPORTANT-cover each outfit with a plastic dry cleaning bag. Then fold each outfit over and place in your suitcase, hanger and all. They WILL NOT WRINKLE. Unpacking is a breeze... just open your suitcase and start hanging things in the closet. A caveat... unfortunately, there are some garments that defy the "dry cleaning bag packing" method. Clothing that is slightly creased or wrinkled can often be freshened up by steaming. Just hang those items in the bathroom while taking a hot, steamy shower and often the wrinkles will fall out. If all else fails, many ships have ironing stations in their self-service passenger launderettes or, for maximum convenience, send the offending garments to the ship's laundry for pressing. I like to hang an over-the-door pocket-style shoe organizer on the bathroom door. Slip your bathroom necessities in the pockets and they're handy and out of the way. Your cabin steward will LOVE you. Neat Packing After ironing items going in my luggage, I fold them up with tissue. Kind of like when items are 'new' from the store. This cuts down on wrinkles, and also because your 'stacks' are neater, allows you to put more in one suitcase. Also, as you're unpacking, keeps things much neater, and kind of gives you an extra lift when wearing that article. I'll also place several layers of tissue in the luggage, as the stacks get about 6" or so. As you wear the articles, the tissue sure comes in handy when repacking, for all the extra goodies that we seem to 'acquire' throughout the holiday/cruise." Pack "His" AND "Hers" Unless you have tight airline connections, if you pack and check multiple suitcases they should all stay together and arrive with you at your destination. However, should one of them be delayed, you and your travel companion can be certain to each have clothing to wear if you "mix" up your garments. Pack "his AND hers" clothing articles in each suitcase. Packing Small & Watertight Undergarments and knits take only a third of the suitcase space they normally occupy when they're compressed. Simply place those articles in bags designed for compact storage, such as those made by Pack-Mate, or appropriately sized zipper top kitchen storage bags and force all the air out before zipping them shut. Not only do you save room in your suitcases but your clothing will stay dry. Dry? What's with that? Well, if you have soft-sided luggage and it gets caught in a downpour, either while being loaded on your airplane or ship, the contents could get soaked. You might also spray your luggage with Scotch Guard for additional waterproofing both inside and out. An added bonus of using zipper top bags is efficient unpacking-just leave everything in the bags and stack them in drawers and on shelves. Fast, neat, and space saving! With today's updated airport security procedures, you may not be able to lock your luggage until after it's been screened-if you can lock it at all. Ask at check in if it's possible to use cable ties. If your luggage requires hand-screening, a new cable tie will usually be affixed and you will find a note inside the suitcase indicating that the contents were examined. If you use a combination or keyed lock, it will be cut off and discarded. Tape ~ Tape ~ Tape Duct tape... is it really a necessity? Judging by the number of people who ask to borrow it-YES! For added security, there's nothing like duct tape. Wrapped around suitcases, it keeps them relatively secure in worst case scenarios, such as zipper blow out or broken hinges and clasps. Tape also discourages random pilferage by baggage handlers. Why would anyone bother with your taped bag when others are not even locked? Plus, it gives your suitcases a bit of frequent traveler panache-"shabby chic," if you will. As the photo illustrates, for an emergency repair, there's nothing as handy as duct tape. Have DUCK Tape, Will Travel highlights a new cruising travel necessity... it's NOT your father's duct tape and it no longer belongs in the garage. Again, with today's updated airport security screening, the duct tape might be cut to enable hand examination of suitcase contents. Just as effective are brightly-colored luggage straps with quick release buckles such as those available from eBags and Magellan's. Tag Your Bags This may seem excessive, but I use ALL the tags provided by the cruise line when tagging our suitcases. At a minimum, I want TWO identification tags on each suitcase (in addition to our "permanent" luggage tags). Those tags, with cotton or elastic string, can easily become detached so before putting them on the suitcases, I reinforce them with tape. I also remove the string, replacing it with long cable ties. I put one on each handle of dual-handle suitcases and two on the handle of suitcases that only have one handle. Compulsive? Maybe. Suitcases With An Identity How is your suitcase like a Model-T Ford? You can have any color you want, as long as it's black. With soft-sided black cloth luggage taking over the world, it's getting harder and harder to find your own on the floor of the warehouse. In addition to the required identification tags, we've used unique colorful tags, straps, tapes, and some others. Recently I came up with what I think is a permanent solution. "Wal-Mart (and probably other distinguished merchants) carries a product called Speedball PaintersT opaque paint markers, in different colors, under $3. We used white on the black luggage and hand lettered an identifying name in about 3-inch letters on the face of the luggage that includes the handle. One marker did three applications on each of three pieces. Easy to do, high contrast, and permanent (well, as permanent as we are). For security reasons, we didn't put our name on it, I used my hotmail name. About the only drawback I see is it will make it harder to sell the old suitcases at a yard sale, but when we're done with them, it's dumpster time anyhow. KIDabra International Conference 2008 -------------------------------------------- Message from Mark Daniel kidabra.org MacGyver Magic, Round 2 at KIDabra International Conference 2008 In 2007 the MacGyver Magic duo of Scott Francis and David Allen electrified the room of attendees present at the KIDabra International Conference. Their well deserved standing ovation at the end, was a testament to the sheer genius of their debut lecture. A lecture that harkened back to days of old, where lecturers actually taught things you could make yourself. Add in the fact that they have a hilarious chemistry and it becomes for many an experience that awakens the joy that got us all involved in Magic in the first place. MacGyver Magic had the number 2 selling DVD in all of Magic last year according to Genii Magazine with The Amazing Dancing Napkin. Scott Francis is a highly sought after corporate speaker and comedy magician working for Fortune 500 companies and David Allen (Atlanta, Georgia) is a busy and highly creative professional children's magician who together have caught lightning. The usual crowd where all there from the Castle and Dale Hindman, Milt Larsen and Max Maven kept me under control. In the audience this trip were Kirk Douglas, and famed author Ray Bradbury, and from UK London comedian Jimmy Jones and wallet maker Jerry O'Connell. A terrific trip with a highlight being Friday lunch with famed music writer for Walt Disney, Richard Sherman. If you ever meet up with Richard ask him about the lunchtime linking rings!
