It caused such a massive sensation throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland, that it became the major topic on both Radio and Television Chat Shows for several months afterwards! Refer item 11. With Dan Harlan's Permission I'm Sharing His Official Statement -------------------------------------------- Message from Bill Bowers With Dan's permission I'm sharing his official statement. Although I try to keep my personal life separate from my public life, that is no longer possible. In a way, that's good. I am going through a frightening and challenging time and I know I can't face it alone. Regarding the incident in question, I have no memory of it. I began that evening drinking at a local bar and I ended that evening in jail. The last thing I remember was singing karaoke, doing a little magic and everybody buying drinks for me... then I woke up being rolled into the hospital, bloody, handcuffed to the gurney, surrounded by doctors, nurses, and the police. Then I passed out again. Imagine yourself in my position. I doubt you can... but if you can, perhaps you'll understand why I've decided to seek help for my alcoholism. I have officially bottomed-out. I know I have a problem, because this is what it took for me to admit it. I have a lifetime filled with loss and regret. I started drinking when I was 9 years old. I drank heavily throughout Middle and High School, and constantly my first, and only, semester in college. I've nearly killed myself numerous times, I've ruined all my relationships, and I've lost everything good I've ever had. But I never asked for help. Fortunately for everyone I've known, I'm not violent, just stupid. However, I never thought I was capable of something as ridiculous as what happened that night. It frightens me to think of what might happen if I continue to drink myself blind. I'm thankful that no one, except me, was physically injured. I am in the process of recovery and attempting to "put things right." I have not had any alcohol since then, and I plan to abstain in the future. My lawyer has spoken with the bar owner who is "heartbroken" over the incident and sympathetic. I never intended to cause any harm, but I know that I acted irresponsibly. The court date has not yet been set, and I have no idea what penalty may be imposed. In Ohio, voluntary intoxication is not a defense. I'm sorry it had to come to this before I was able to admit that I have a problem, and that I need help. I know that I have the love, understanding and support of my family and friends. I'd also like to make one more thing perfectly clear. We have many young magicians just getting into magic due to its current popularity and I don't want any of them to think that my drinking has helped my creativity and success. It has not. In fact, it has kept me from achieving the personal and professional success I had always hoped to have. I have done all of my best work sober. I wish I had been able to enjoy it and build upon it, but I foolishly threw it all away. I'm hoping it's not too late for me to create a personal life which can serve as a good example for everyone. Dan Harlan -------------------------------------------- 5. 3˝ Hour Interview with Billy McComb -------------------------------------------- Message from Nick Lewin (US) I recorded a 3˝ hour interview with Billy McComb which I am very proud of. I called it 'The secrets behind the secrets' and after Billy's death I sent copies of a very special 3 CD set to Billy's closest friends. This was a highly limited edition and was my 'valentine' to Billy. Many people wanted to buy copies of the set but I never released them to the market. I have now published a slightly amended version of this remarkable insight into the art and science of performing magic. It contains some truly amazing information and is a delightful reminder of the knowledge and wisdom that Billy shared so freely with the magic world. Listening to it is just like having Billy sitting in your living room without the smell of tobacco! Many people asked me about purchasing these recordings but that first edition was not for that purpose. If anyone would now like to purchase a set of these unique recordings I can now supply them for the price of $55. Payment can be made via check or Paypal. Remarkable Magic #44 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message from Nick Lewin (US) Remarkable Magic # 44: "Is there a small Hindu boy in the audience tonight?" I would be the first to admit that the late Johnny Platt wasn't a magician's magician. I never saw him do a card trick or any fancy moves however he was a real favorite of mine to watch. He was a thoroughly entertaining performer who kept right on performing and working up until an age at which the Duracell Bunny would be begging for a rest. I don't actually remember ever seeing Johnny perform any trick that wasn't in his show. He was one of those performers whose show seemed carved in stone. Amongst other gems he performed a nifty Cups and Balls routine and the rarely seen Himber Vanishing Bottles routine. My favorite moment was when he stood in the center of the stage wearing his signature red fez and unrolled a length of sturdy rope. He then explained to the audience that he was going to perform the famous Indian Rope Trick. "In this effect" he explained "a sturdy rope stands upright and a small Hindu boy climbs to the top of the rope and vanishes in mid air!" Johnny then looked around the showroom with a glare and said; "Is there a small Hindu boy in the audience tonight?" He would then throw the rope into the wings and growl in his Chicago accent "Well that takes care of that." OK it doesn't sound too funny in print but when Johnny Platt performed it onstage it was a hoot. There was something about his grizzled voice and the way he gazed around the room that cracked me up every time.. Nobody made too much of a fuss about Johnny at the Castle and he certainly didn't get the 'Dai Vernon & Charlie Miller' treatment. I remember on Johnny's 80th birthday my wife Susan insisted we give him a birthday present so we gave him 80 dollars. At the time I suspect we had quite a job scraping it together. Susan also decided that we should throw a birthday party for Johnny to celebrate his birthday. At this time Billy McComb was staying with us and he was delighted at the thought of our apartment being filled with magicians so he gleefully assisted us in putting together the guest list. I arranged to pick up Johnny from his small apartment to transport him to the event and he asked me if his girl friend could also attend. 80 years old and he still had a girl friend; this guy was a real comedy magician! I picked them up at the pre-arranged time and transported them to our second floor apartment in Sherman Oaks for his party. The difficulty that Johnny and Betty had in getting up the steep steps to our apartment made me a very concerned as I really didn't want to have to move the party down into the courtyard! However, after several pauses along the route all went well and a highly enjoyable afternoon complete with a birthday cake followed. Johnny Platt was a real old school performer and he did what I admire most of all in any performer; he went right on performing. I do kind of wish I had been able to smuggle a small Hindu boy into his audience one day though! Is Your Magic Business "Hard Work?"  by Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message from Kyle Peron (US) magic4u02@aol.com http://www.kyleandkellymagic.com I want to ask you a direct question. Just read it to yourself and think about it for a second. Is your magic business hard work? Some may be saying yes and some may be saying no. Those saying no may be proud of the fact that it is not hard work and may be feeling good about that. Those who say yes it is hard work may actually be feeling good too because they know how much work they have put into their business. So who is right here? Can both people really have valid points? Perhaps part of the problem or potential problem is defining each person's use of the term "hard work" and how it applies to their magic business. Should my show look like it is hard work? No, not really. I should look like I am in control and having fun and enjoying the experience I create. If I am a magician, then by nature of the word, what I do should look effortless. Should my clients think my process and working with me is hard? No again. If I am customer focused, then they should see me as a person who has everything under control for them. I am to take the hard work AWAY from them and by doing so I solve problems for my clients. In doing this I become a solutions provider for them. Now is the show and organizing it and creating the show hard work? Of course it is. If I am a creative thinker of magic, and if I want my show to be the best it can be for my audiences, I need to put the hard work into it. Is building up your show and your magic business hard work? Yes it is hard work. If it wasn't, then everyone would be doing it. Now I must add something here. I am referring to building up your business from scratch and getting it to be exactly where you want it to be and achieving that level of success for yourself. Getting people to know who you are initially and establishing your markets is hard work. It takes effort on your part to get up off your butt and make it happen and create the processes and get them working for you. Is maintaining your business hard work? Sometimes yes and sometimes no. Once you get the systems working for you and present a great show, then word of mouth and referrals start working in your favor. Maybe your website is also working for you and entertainment agencies are using you. All this helps you to not have to work as hard as you once did. But the reason here is because you put in the hard work from the start. So what I am saying is the term "hard work" really applies to a vast number of things. We as entertainers need to understand that each of us are at different stages with our magic and magic business. Hard work can mean so many different things but it really needs only apply directly to yourself, where you are with your magic and where you want to go with it. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. Walter Blaney's 80th Birthday Present -------------------------------------------- Message from Walter Blaney (US) Just a note to say I am back from a week at Disney World in Florida. My three daughters, Becky, Carol and Shannon, took me there for my 80th Birthday present. About every other year we take a short father/daughter vacation together.... no spouses or kids.... just the four of us. We always have a blast, a non-stop laughing binge, and we always pick a great place for our fun. Last time it was a European trip to Paris, Rome and Venice. This time a grand visit to Disney World. We are all roller coaster freaks, and where else is better than the half dozen or so really great ones spread around the five Disney Parks in Orlando. We rode each of them several times, till the parks closed for the night. The Mt. Everest Expedition was our favorite.... five times. But the real purpose of this email is to tell you about what I think is the greatest magic illusion I have ever experienced. It is something you will want to see one day in your vacation plans. We and everyone we talked with said it was their favorite Disney attraction. Its name is 'SOARIN'.  You go flying in the air as if strapped onto a hang glider. You start by sitting on a bench with your friends at your side, your legs hanging down in front of you, as if sitting on a porch swing. You then rise off the floor and up into a bank of clouds.  As you come back down through the clouds you are flying right over the spectacular Golden Gate Bridge, barely missing it. Then you swoop down to the water below and over waves and rocks. It is so real you constantly lift your legs up so they don't hit what is below. Then you fly down white water rapids, through an orange grove (and you smell the oranges), over a mountain ski slope (and you knock down a couple of the skiers when you get too close. You swoop down onto an aircraft carrier and almost land (again lifting your feet so they don't hit the deck). Then five Blue Angel jet planes zoom by right in front of you and split formation as they pass you. These are just a few of about a dozen such scenes you experience. Your seat tilts to the right and left and up and down as you zoom and bank in your flight. You feel the acceleration, and the wind is constantly blowing in your face. It is absolute realism. The imagination, creativity, engineering, cinematography and optical tricks that went into the attraction are all pure genius. Add the beautiful "soaring" music, and it all brings thrills and tears of joy to your eyes. Okay, I don't want to overdo it, but really, every human being should be able to experience this ride. My friend David Copperfield has done his great "Flying Illusion" on his theater stages across the world for years, and to me it's the best magic stage illusion of all time. Now you can experience flying yourself, and your stages are all the beautiful scenes and more that I have described above. Those who one day get to enjoy this event, I hope you will let me know what you think. www.walter@walterblaney.com Happy flying, Walter Walter Blaney walter@walterblaney.com -------------------------------------------- 9. Entertaining On The Ocean #23 - Paul Romhany -------------------------------------------- Message from Paul Romhany (NZ) www.chaplinmagic.com Traveling on the High Seas I left you all last week very exhausted after flying for 24 hours and at a hotel that wasn't, shall we say, very safe. I did manage to get to another hotel where I demanded to be taken by the port agent and was able to rest during the day. At 11pm that night, the night before joining the ship I got a phone call in my room from the port agent who told me he was sending over a taxi driver to collect my Passport so he could give it to Immigration the next morning. Now one thing I have learnt from all these years traveling is you NEVER give anybody your passport, especially a taxi driver who you have never met! I told the port agent, who I was starting to now think was some kind of flake, if he wanted the Passport then he was to drive over himself and bring suitable ID proving he was who he said he was and worked for the shipping company, to collect my Passport. Close to midnight he turned up with his ID and proved he was the port agent and I handed over my Passport very reluctantly. The next day I got picked up and taken to the ship and everything, I am pleased to report, was fine.  It is very rare that you have to give out your Passport; I have done it once before in Singapore, however down here in Brazil you have to be very careful. Pleased to report the show this week went very well, an all British audience who enjoyed the act as it was a world cruise and they were craving for something a little different. Usually on these types of cruises the acts change every week and on this line they use a lot of singers and instrumentalists. The cruise director did tell me they had a 'juggler' last week and was so bad they could not put him on for a 2nd show. Most of the audience got up and left by the end of it, she said he was more like a street performer. Audiences on these high end ships can be incredibly tough on acts and have no problem just walking out on acts if they don't like them. I often wonder what the agents who book the acts on ships are thinking. Do they not know where the act is best suited, or do they just don't care. If you know the demographics of your cruise passengers prior to going on a ship then that helps a lot. My act is very well suited to a more mature audience, generally more up market ships, rather than say a much younger crowd who goes on a 4-7 day cruise and just wants to party and make a lot of noise. Having worked for most of the cruise lines I know the types of passengers they cater for and know which ones I am best suited for. If a job comes up and I know it's not for me, I simply won't take it and my agent is very aware of this. I always ask where the cruise is, for how many days and he tells me if it is a charter cruise. Sorry this week was short but I am on the ships internet and at 75 pence or $1.50 US a minute it is very expensive. I fly home next week and hope to have more for you all. I do get a lot of questions from people and in the next few issues will try and answer those as best I can for magicians who want to try and get work on ships. I am pleased to report that I have now set up a product page off my main website www.paulromhany.com for those that want to purchase any of my effects directly from me. For a full range of my effects still check out www.hocus-pocus.com or ask your favourite magic dealer as Magic City is now my wholesale dealer for my magic effects. The Amazing Orchanté Performing Psychic Surgery -------------------------------------------- Message from Tom Orchard (The Amazing Orchanté - retired) Hi everyone, The clip is from the '50 Greatest Magic Tricks', which I reviewed when it was first shown here in the U.K. The 'String Thing', as I affectionately call it, was actually first shown back in 1987 on the a TV show titled - 'The Last Resort', hosted by a very young, very green, Jonathan Ross - now the highest paid TV host - of all time - in Britain. Below, is the paragraph I wrote in my autobiography. The clip is heavily edited from the original but the major bits are there. Incidentally, as you will see, I was dressed in a suit, the first and last time I ever performed the feat in one. I worked my Fakir Show Bare-chested, dressed in a turban, Ali Baba Style pantaloons, armbands etc. Enjoy - if you can! List Of Magic Societies And Clubs -------------------------------------------- Message from Darrel Mileson (UK) I am putting together a list of as many magic societies and clubs as I can, from throughout the world. I have contacted the main organisations, such as the IBM and SAM, but I also want to contact all the clubs and rings within those organisations. I am also trying to get details from all the independent societies and any smaller organisations as I can. The idea is to get a list, country by country, state by state, of ALL the clubs in that area. So far, I have found that about 10% or more have out of date contact details, or websites that just don't exist anymore. I am also hoping to get a list of under 18 societies, to encourage younger people to start getting the benefit of joining. Instead of just a list of society names, I am getting details which can be seen, rather than having to click on a name, and then finding out it isn't suitable. (Closed Membership, age restrictions etc.) Please note: I will also try to get together with people who have other lists, so we can update each other. It should save having several people asking for the same information. These are the details I have been asking for. Name of club. Location, including country, Normal day and time of meetings. Ages open to, as some allow younger members, others don't. Any specific details, including for Young Magicians only. Membership requirements. E.G can be a guest once, but then have to pass an audition etc. Also cost of Membership. Any other information you think is useful, e.g. if you have a website. Contact details. Please state if the information is current, All information will be gratefully received. Many thanks for your help. Any information you can provide that I can add to the list would be appreciated. Even if your details are on your site, having them on display on a magic forum may make people more aware of you. I am also looking for some people that can write a line or two on the benefits of joining societies in general. This is to give that extra piece of encouragement to those that may be unsure. If your society includes members who are known in your country, or internationally, perhaps you could be kind enough to pass on my details please. NB, if you are a National organisation, could you either pass my details on to your member clubs, or forward their details to me please. If you could also pass on details on your main organisation, I am putting these together at the start of the list. Please note, I am only using details you send, unless you give permission for me to include items from your websites, if that is easier. This means that the list will be up to date. If you have other lists in your country, perhaps you could also let me know, so we can update each other, rather than have several people contacting for updates. -------------------------------------------- 17.
