Paul Daniels Poster Collection On eBay -------------------------------------------- Message from Paul Daniels (UK) For the last few weeks I have been having the Great Sort Out and the first results of that will start to appear on eBay within the next 5 days. First to go... Posters. If you are interested in the history of magic on paper, or are looking for something special to decorate the walls of your den (or your living room if you are not married), then head over there as I start to auction them off. There are magicians from Germany, Australia, Britain, the USA and on and on and on. To make them easy to find I think I will head them all Paul Daniels Posters and then put the details below the title. Then we will probably move on to books when the posters are gone. I love them all but there comes a time... Have fun Paul Daniels p.s. If you haven't read it already in my blog, my thanks to those responsible at the Magic Circle for presenting me with the Devant Award this week. www.pauldaniels.co.uk -------------------------------------------- 3. Mike Super Wins The Contest In NBC's "Phenomenon" Show -------------------------------------------- Message from Walter Blaney (US) Just to let those know who may have missed it, magician Mike Super won the grand prize, $250,000, on NBC's Phenomenon TV show series finale tonight. He did a great job each week, and I think deserved to win. All the other contestants did a great job too. It was a well produced show, and brought attention to the field of mentalism, and magic in general. Thank you NBC. When I sent out a note a week ago to watch the finals, if you voted for Mike, why not drop him a note of congratulations: mikesuper4@comcast.net I know he appreciated your voting for him, and I know Mike would enjoy hearing from you. Three cheers for Mike Super. And my cheers to you, Walter -------------------------------------------- 4. Charles Gauci Gave Us Astonishing Value For Money ----------------- Message from Shayne Thompson (NZ) It's been a great week for New Zealand magicians as Charles Gauci presented his workshop here on his way home to Australia after his tour of the US and Canada. I was fortunate enough to see Charles perform his 75-minute act for a largely lay audience at a party put on by Richard Webster. The magicians who were there were just as amazed as the rest of the audience as Charles performed his incredible act of memory and mental effects. The following evening, Charles presented his workshop and explained many of the effects he'd performed. I have attended many lectures and workshops over the years, but gained more from Charles Gauci's workshop than almost all the others put together. Charles gave us astonishing value for money, with a workshop that was more than five hours long. All of Charles' effects are practical, highly entertaining, and easy to do. Thank you, Charles. I hope you come back to New Zealand again very soon. -------------------------------------------- 6. Remarkable Magic #30 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message from Nick Lewin (US) Remarkable Magic. Johnny Thompson: the night I quaked in my boots! Back in the early '90s I had an opportunity to work with an act that I really admired. No-- don't jump the gun it wasn't the iconic team of Johnny and Pam Thompson. It was with the brilliant comedy juggler Daniel Rosen. I thought the combination worked so well I made it a point to get us a few more bookings together to see what might develop. Daniel and I booked a week at 'Catch a Rising Star' at Bally's Hotel and Casino and created a very cool 90 minute show called 'Out Of Control' that not only allowed us to highlight our own talents but to include Daniels highly talented friend Rhae Ann Theriault into the mix. Rhea Ann was a blazing talent who went on to tour as lead singer/dancer with Bette Midler. It was a great cast and a really fabulous post-modern vaudeville review. The idea of the show was that Daniel and I each thought we had been booked for a solo show and a competitive battle began with beautiful dark haired Rhae Ann at the heart of it as a bubble brained dancer called Fluffy. Rhae Ann was a howl as we rehearsed the show in Los Angeles but something kept nagging briefly in the back of my mind. Since I couldn't quite place it I let it alone. When we arrived in Las Vegas for our first full dress rehearsal it suddenly jumped right to the very forefront of my mind! When Rhea Ann put on her costume it included a bright blond wig and black bustier dress and it was then that I realized that her character was very close to that of Pam Thompson in her role in the fabulous Great Tomsoni & Co. show. I just hadn't realized it until I saw that wig in place. I was very aware of the fact that John and Pam closely guarded their incredible creation and to be absolutely honest I had always been a bit scared of Johnny. I was not sure that Johnny knew who the heck I was and probably didn't think much of me if he did! I didn't want the appearance of a blonde assistant onstage to get me 'out of fire and into the Frying pan.' I went up to Rhea Ann and suggested she perform without the wig. She drew herself up to her full height (maybe a foot shorter than me) and with blazing eyes replied that she had created 'Fluffy' in an improv class three years before and been performing her ever since. She told me in no uncertain terms that she was damned if she would play her without the wig. I took one look at her and realized I was more scared of her than Johnny and tried to pretend I had never suggested it. We opened our show at Bally's on Monday night and it was a smash. However someone else must have spotted the resemblance and I got a call the next day that Johnny and Pam were coming to the show the next night. To say I was apprehensive would be an understatement. I was truly alarmed. To cut a long story short Johnny and Pam caught our show the next night and really enjoyed it and they couldn't have been more gracious or friendly over the issue. Whew! While seeing the similarities in the characters they also were such seasoned performers that they spotted the differences and the thought process that had created 'Fluffy.' The best part of this whole story is that it began a friendship for me with the unique John & Pam which I really enjoy. If anyone out there would like to see some clips of 'Fluffy' with Daniel and myself performing our wacky version of the old burlesque item 'The Doctor Sketch' from this Vegas show then follow this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AyaRvGIDngA There is also another great clip from 'Out of Control' on my YouTube website. We never repeated the show but to this day it remains my favorite ever-creative production. Creativity - The Pizza Pie Analogy: by Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message from Kyle Peron (US) Magic4u02@aol.com Creativity is like a pizza? Huh? I know by now this topic headline must have you shrugging your shoulders and wondering what the heck I am referring to or even talking about. The bottom line is creativity is lacking in magic today. Too many of us fall victim to creating acts or routines without any real substance for the audience. Allow me to dig deeper. Let me start by saying that magicians usually fall into this bad habit of showing off skill or seeking a "wow" response in the magic that we do. Now do not get me wrong here. This eagerness to get a "wow" reaction is not a bad thing because it is at the nature of what magic is all about and probably why we got interested in magic in the first place. That amazing feeling and "rush" we feel when we have an audience spellbound is a very powerful thing. Skill and seeking that "wow" response is not a bad thing at all. However what is bad is the fact that too many magicians, that is ALL they ever seek. As a magician we see and understand that if I show skill, I can get a great reaction from my audience. However, we fail to realize that there exist so many other things we can add to our magic to give our audiences experiences totally different than anything they may have experienced before. There is so much more out there to add to any routine, act or show. You can very easily fall victim to an act of skill alone because it has no depth to it. If the skill fails at any point, what is left? Nothing. If you are not superb in your skill then the audience is left with nothing else to enjoy about what you present. The solution is the fact that anyone can learn to add "layers" (like a good pizza) to your act and routines to build substance and increase the creativity and enjoyment level. An act of skill alone is not a bad thing much like a plain pizza is not bad either. It is good and people will enjoy it but could it be better? Sure it could through toppings and seasonings others like. Many people like different things. Just like a pizza, many people enjoy different toppings and seasonings in their food. Like a magic act or routine, you can add "toppings or layers" to your act so as to allow creativity to flow and to build substance for the audience to grab a hold of. This creates more creative acts. If we add these layers, we create an experience for the audience that is richer and deeper. Our audiences are now given multiple things to enjoy in the act we are presenting. Much like good food, a chef will add various seasoning and ingredients into the food so that each person can experience something a bit different and still enjoy what they eat. The same can be applied to the magic that you do. So what are some of these layers that can be added to the magic you create? Let me list only a few of them here to give you an idea of what I am referring to. Layers can be things such as theme, character, style, pacing, emotional response, music, movement and the list goes on. Each of these are what I refer to as layers. Each can be added to any magic that you do to build substance and increase entertainment value. Give your audiences something more than just skill. Skill is fine, but allow yourself to not stop there. Like a great chef, give your audiences much more to grab a hold of and I guarantee you that your entertainment value will climb ten-fold. As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you. Entertaining On The Ocean #9 - Paul Romhany -------------------------------------------- Message from Paul Romhany (NZ) Yesterday Natalie and I found ourselves on another trip to the Pyramids in Egypt and a river cruise on the Nile. No matter how many times we do this trip it never loses it's magic. Today we are going in to Jerusalem for an eleven hour tour, something we've always wanted to do. Upon our arrival last night from Cairo I received this wonderful email from magician Eric Bedard. Eric is based out of Victoria, Canada and is keeping busy these days working on ships as well as corporate work around North America. The most popular story I get from magicians who work on ships is that of lost luggage. The moral of all these stories is that you must always be prepared to do a show with NOTHING. Thank you Eric and Linda for this story, which my wife Natalie and I can relate to so well, as I'm sure all cruise ship magicians can. You can visit Eric on line at www.coolmagicdude.com And now, here is Eric's story: Hey gang: Wow, I had many emails asking me if I ever got my luggage. It was Shipped back to Victoria, too bad you don't get air miles on your luggage! Linda was on the first 12 day cruise with me and she wrote emails to family and friends. Here is the one she sent about our trip to Cairo Airport to get my luggage for those that are interested in something to read. As many of you know, I carry 45 minutes of magic and tables in my second carryon bag, but I had to check it at Heathrow as they only allow one carry on (laptop) due to heightened security.... (I don't fly through Heathrow anymore, go the Frankfurt route!) Anyways, here is the email Linda sent out. Subject: Always save the best for last... Ah, Alexandria, the second largest city in Egypt. Yesterday, the pyramids, the Sphinx, today another journey as we are going to Cairo by taxi with a port agent. Not many people experience this type of adventure as usually port agents in taxis are more personable and you get to see much more of the local scenery, not just tourist stuff. I love to experience the local fare much more than touristy areas, that's where the culture is. So..it is 9.30a.m. And we await "the word" from the ship staff. We are whisked away at 10:00, thru check points, passports, a lot of Arabic shouting and off we go. Our agent's name is Achmed and the driver is Mohammed, very little English being spoken and we are already driving in a cab thru the city at speeds I don't do on the highway. Remember yesterday we were up high in a bus, well now we are at ground level and the cars, people, buses, donkeys and camels are about 1cm from my window. Hang on, this will only be a 3 1/2 - 4 hr hour ride!! OMG, I swear my heart is going to jump out of my skin and I've only been in the car for 20 minutes..haha, Eric keeps saying "we're dead" hahaha...Seriously...there are no rules. Well, we have finally made the highway and guess what? We can go faster!! Haha.. This car has a lovely warning bell that rings whenever the car reaches speeds of over 120km, but no worries, in goes a tape of lovely Arabic music and off we speed to Cairo, both of us trying not to laugh out loud. I say, wonder what my mother would think of us now, I picture her...We dodge trucks, cars, traffic, honestly this guy is crazy! He is going 120km honking his horn continuously going between a car and a bus (10 men are hanging off the back of the bus as it is too full inside), holy crap!! We must slow down now, we are in a traffic jam just outside of Cairo, its 1pm and no sign of any airport, brick buildings as far as the eye can see. Where would they put an airport here? We see accidents, bad ones..don't look. Ah, airport, you can't imagine the traffic here. We are dropped off with the port agent and he has no idea which terminal to go to?? Are you kidding????? He thinks it might be Egypt Air we tell him it's probably British Air but you'd think he knew this before. Ok, up stairs, down stairs, not at Egypt air. Next terminal at British, back in the car, it's now 215pm, must be back at the ship for 6.30pm...Finally, British Air!! Lost Luggage!! No sir, the suitcases are not here, never were, they were shipped back to Canada from Athens.....I say in disbelief.."why?" "because that's what the tag on the luggage said"...We just look at each other..wow.. Time to head back, there is nothing we can do..I pay a dollar to use the bathroom which is disgusting and apparently the man's is even worse..Ok, we are silent, back in the taxi and race back. Now remember it's their holiday, everyone should be inside by 5.30 to have their first meal with their family. Ramadan, nothing shall enter your body between sunrise and sunset. That means food, water, medicine, tobacco..nothing..we have not eaten since 7.30am..Eric says well I guess you won't make it to your homes in time? Achmed just looks at us with those eyes, which say..wanna bet? I think we were going fast on the way here, well I don't think we will make it home alive. The bells are going in the car, the Arabic music is blaring, we have hit over 140km, the music just got louder, the honking is all you can here but not from us, there is a car behind/beside us that needs to pass us but there is nowhere to go. I close my eyes and zone out, it's too much and I am about to throw up!! All I hear is metal crunching on Eric's side as we grind into the median and my voice screaching in fear, we are metal to metal with another car and barely holding on!!! Sparks flying!! 3 seconds, 4.. 5...we are still flying down this road, one of us will flip for sure!!! The sound is gone..we are still on the road and all I hear is loud yelling and the sound of Eric's voice asking me if I'm ok...We pull over, assess the damages and off we go again! I am in shock..the bells continue, the music continues, It's all a blur for the next 2 hours until we are again in Alexandria...its 6:10pm,(we sail at 6:30) all is calm; we are talking to the driver..He is getting married on the 26th of November and he has invited us!! Hahaha, what a day.... We have 2 sea days ahead of us, Eric is still doing a show but the first one will be a split bill with another comedian. Its 25 mins on Saturday so he will put something together. Friday is our Sea day and it is great, we lie on the deck, read, lounge, it's formal night so we get dressed up and have a wonderful meal. The sea is very rough! We are really going up and down and the production show is cancelled, the dancers cannot go on as they might really break a leg! The cruise director finds Eric at 7:45 and asks if he can go on tonight! In 45 minutes???? Oh boy, now this will be fun....The show went on, two of them, rocking all over the stage, not his normal stuff, stuff he threw together in a pinch, Eric almost gets sick on stage, small crowds due to the ship flying all over the place, finally its over... Its Saturday morning, 745am and we are signed up for the Run for the Cure, one hour for breast cancer! Off we go!!!!!! -------------------------------------------- 9. The Amazing Orchante Saga ----------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) Page 25 Another Adagio/ Dancer act which used Jon Doyle's fitness studio, that we worked with quite often, were the 'Duo Arabesque'- Marilla and Ibraham; she was Australian and he, Lebanese. "The bloody Arab" Marilla used to called him - fondly. It was strange how often we would work with the same act(s) in the various RSL's, Leagues and other clubs, especially when you consider the vast number of clubs, and the seemingly limitless number of artistes, of all kinds, who were working the Sydney circuit. We became good friends with Marilla and Ibraham, particularly after we had both been booked by my old mate Gilbert Thong, to work in Noumea, New Caledonia for a couple of weeks. Gilbert, who hails from New Caledonia, was the promoter who gave me my first over-seas bookings around the South Pacific Islands, way back in the 'dark ages' (see pages - 36, 37 and 38 of The Orchanté Saga, Vol. One). Like most Adagio artistes, Marilla and Ibraham would appear on-stage wearing a cloak and/or cape of some sort, then take it off with a flourish, to reveal quite skimpy costumes which showed off their physiques - the 'Body Beautiful'; the very nature of this type of act demands it in any case. Both partners are always in fantastic shape (hence the continuous fitness and body sculpturing/training regimes) and, more often than not, the females, like their male counterparts, worked topless. This little exposé is to set the scene for an incident that had Marilla in tears. Gilbert decided to fly us out to a little Island situated off the East Coast of New Caledonia, miles out in the Pacific Ocean - Lifou Island, to perform our show/acts for the natives. Talk about being isolated from civilisation - and the hotel? The 'rooms' were several, typically native, round shaped grass bures, set-up in a compound; bunk style beds with mosquito nets - thank God, and the running water was strictly limited, so you had to try and do your No. 2's and flush the toilet before it was shut off until the next morning, as were the generators that supplied the electricity! I guess that if you were used to doing the 'nature walks' bit, camping out in tents. etc. We weren't! The show, held in a large tin shack, which also served as the local community centre, was absolutely jam-packed with happy, laughing, and excited natives, whose clothing looked like it had come, at best, from a jumble sale, at worst, a rubbish dump! At least they were wearing something! They used to run around naked until the early missionaries arrived; their Bible banging teachings changed practically all of the islands inhabitants throughout the South Pacific into Christians. I guess that in some ways, it had its benefits - they were no longer cannibals! On with the show. As Veronica and I had two different acts, we went on first - performing our magic show. At one stage, I got a little boy up to do the old vanishing lit cigarette in the handkerchief - I always borrowed my volunteers coat, it has a far bigger impact than a measly handkerchief. This little boy wasn't wearing a coat; he had on what seemed to be a brown coloured cardigan - that was until I asked him to take it off so that I could perform 'The Magic'. As he removed it, it turned inside out, to reveal that it was, bright red! The outside 'brown' colour was - dirt! As I 'vanished' the cigarette, the cardigan kept trying to crawl away on its own volition. So did I! Then it was Marilla and Ibrahim's turn to entertain the happy throng. As their background music came on, they strode out onto the floor (there was no stage), and removed their cloaks. Initially there was a hushed silence, then quiet giggling, as they start performing their various routines, which really was something quite beautiful to watch as Ibraham showed his strength with his one-arm lifts etc., with Marilla gracefully posing in a variety of positions. We could hear tittering from the audience virtually from the start of their act, but when some of the Adagio positions entailed Marilla doing the splits, the crowd started screaming with laughter. Neither of them could understand what was so funny but as the true professionals that they were, they carried on and finished their act. We didn't know either, what had caused the laughter during their show, until Gilbert told us. It started practically from the time that Marilla dropped her cloak, because they could see her boobs; then, because of Marilla's very skimpy G-String, they could, "See the white girls 'thing"! Poor Marilla burst into tears of embarrassment, then anger, until she came to realise that the friendly natives on remote Pacific Islands just don't 'see' things quite the same way as mature, discerning audiences do, in sophisticated nightclubs etc. We came on once again to finish off the show, performing our signature 'Fakir' presentation: Fire Eating, Bed-of-Nails, Sword-Swallowing and the 'String Thing' (psychic surgery), during which another little incident occurred, which gave Marilla a great sense of 'sweet revenge' and satisfaction!
