I was with him at the time and he appeared to go peacefully. Jerry was the main inspiration for the Mysticians. Jerry, of course, was much more. We are thinking of holding a celebration of his life sometime near the end of September. -------------------------------------------- 4. New "Presto Magic" Opens -------------------------------------------- Message from Fred Broder Thanks to your newsletter for publishing my forced move from my 30-year location, Presto Magic has opened again, this time at the Park-View Shopping Center (4195-F Viking Way-- on the diagonal street between Carson St. and Bellflower Blvd.) in Long Beach, California! We opened on 14 August, but our 13,000+ letter-size tuck-in advertisement came out in the local newspaper on Friday, 24 August. Yes, it was expensive, but we gained quite a few "new" magic enthusiasts. It took a crew of seven professional movers almost a week to move our large stock of magic tricks and books, novelties and jokes, clown supplies, and "really read" comicbooks and Big-Little books to the new location. So, one of the largest selections of new and used magic tricks and books on the West Coast is once again available. Unfortunately, I had to sacrifice my large costume department because of space limitations, but they were donated to local playhouses and charities. So, Presto Magic is back in business! Thanks, again for spreading the word! ----------------- 5. A Public Thank You ----------------- Message from Mandy Davis (UK) In 2005 the YMC magazine, 'Secrets', carried an article about Magic Camp Safari in Canada. The camp organiser, Mike Segal, very kindly offered a free registration as a prize for one of our members. The young man who won came from a single parent family where there was little money to spare yet he had wanted to visit a magic camp for many years. So YMC tried various avenues for grants to help him and at the beginning of last year Warren Kaps and the board of the SAM came up trumps, paying for the flight which would take our intrepid young magician to Toronto and on to his dream holiday (vacation). He enjoyed Camp Safari enormously. He came back buzzing with it all and subsequently he has produced a competent act which had been planned, worked through and rehearsed - not the usual dealer dems he had given in the past! However - I feel that the REAL magic is this: the story doesn't end there..... This teenager enjoyed the camp so very much that he was determined to go back. With only mum and grandma in the background, there would be little help with costs. So he got himself a job 'in catering'; reading between the lines I believe it to be washing up in the kitchens of an eating establishment somewhere! He went to college by day and worked evenings, weekends and holidays (vacations), saving every penny to go back. As I write this he is back at the camp for a week and no doubt having an even better time, knowing he's done this all by himself, paying every penny of flight and registration out of his own hard work. The point is that without Mike Segal's prize and the grant to help him last year he would not have known the glories of the camp which in turn gave him the determination to get back there. So thank you SAM and Mike - this is the kind of work that needs to be shouted from the rooftops, the kind of influence that makes working with the future of magic so very rewarding. -------------------------------------------- 6. Remarkable Magic #20 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message from Nick Lewin (US) Remarkable Magic. David Blaine a Remarkable Phenomenon. I was very skeptical about the potential merits of David Blaine when his first television special was being promoted. The fact that Spike Lee was being brought in to edit the promo did nothing to impress me. I did video tape the special though. In point of fact there wasn't much in his special that did impress me. However, after a few moments though I arrived at the conclusion that I wasn't the intended demographic for the show. Not only was I the wrong age but even worse than that I was a magician. Ah, there is the rub. One thing I did realize instantly was that the special was a very cool concept and a definite breakthrough in television magic. It was a hip extension of what was then a relatively new concept 'reality programming.' A form of television I have resolutely hated since it appeared on the scene. The lack of excitement I felt about the magic Blaine performed didn't stop me from being highly intrigued by his persona and curiously low key approach to doing sensational things. It was like a correction in the market. I felt instinctively (and still do) that he had come up with something innovative and fresh that would do nothing but good for the image of magic. The impact that Blaine's special had on his actual intended demographic audience was astounding though. It was what every non-magician wanted to talk about. He instantly became a topic of conversation across the country. While this didn't totally surprise me I was amazed at how quickly he made his mark. What did surprise me, however, was the way that the magic world not only failed to embrace him but moved in such a unified manner to denounce and express their disapproval of him. Maybe they just didn't get the fact that his demographic didn't include them. Maybe it was because he made many magicians, even some very prominent ones, look old fashioned and irrelevant. Even Billy McComb who seldom had an unkind word to say about anyone who performed magic used to describe Blaine as some sort of stunt man who had bought a copy of 'The Royal Road To Card Magic.' Possibly the major factor in the division between the magic world and Blaine's true demographic was the fact that he dared to hint at something truly mysterious and possibly unexplainable in his feats and stunts. For a community that still finds it acceptable to use a magic wand when they need to conceal items during the 'Cups and Balls' I find this rather strange. What is our goal as magicians? It isn't just to fool but to supply a sense of mystery. I know the standard enlightened response is to say; "We are supposed to entertain." However there is a heck of a lot of magic being performed that not only doesn't entertain but which only just manages to fool. No, I think there is truly a need to allow a little mystery into our art and we can't leave it all to Jeff and Eugene. If you don't want to do it yourself then step aside and watch as someone else does. What we shouldn't do is stand on the sidelines with a knowing smirk and say; "Of course, he's a fake." We are ALL fakes: that is the nature of what we do. Worst of all let's not descend to dismissing something new because it excites the imagination of the non-magician. Magic can't move forward by standing still. Let's be happy when someone finds a way to create something new under the magical sun. All of the close-up performers who now feature 'Street Magic' are moving into new territory due to David Blaine. Rather than look for negatives we should be trying to analyze the things he did that were right. As always send any bricks or bouquets to nicklewin@earthlink.net and check out my website at http://www.NickLewin.com -------------------------------------------- 7. What Is It That Makes Children Laugh? - By Kyle Peron -------------------------------------------- Message from Kyle Peron (US) Magic4u02@aol.com As a family oriented performer I have often wondered exactly what is it that makes children laugh? What is it that they respond to that generates this rush of laughter and good times? It is interesting to research and I found out things I never knew before. If a magician understands what makes children laugh, then they can apply it to the routines they create. After all we are entertainers first. So allow me to dive in a bit on this subject and share some of my findings. Keep in mind that some of this may not be new to you but I wanted to discuss it here so that it might inspire and help others. The first item that caught my eye when I first started researching this topic was about the relationship between how often children laugh and how often adults laugh. It does not take a rocket scientist to realize that children laugh much more frequently then adults do. But why is this? I found out a statistic that really shocked me. Children laugh on average of 400 times in a course of a day where as adults tend to laugh around 25. That is a staggering difference. So what is it that causes this laughter. I wanted to list some of the things I found through research as well as through my own personal experience. - Treating an Object Like Something Else: It is an important to realize that children live in a fantasy world at a young age. Everything to them is magical. Turning on a light is by magic. But often times they also start showing at an early age the idea of pretending. You see this a lot in their play. One object can suddenly become another object. This can be used by us entertainers. Because the child does this naturally, having one object become something else is funny to them. - Calling an Object or Person by a Different Name: As children start to talk they become very vocal. They use their new found communication skills and start to use that in their humor as well. If we know that children early on are fascinated with speech and with wanting to verbally tell you things, we can use this to our advantage. Children themselves will often naturally call something by a different name and find doing so hilarious. - Name Play: This is a concept that as children get older and start using their new found vocal skills, they like to name play with the sounds of names. This could mean a word like Boat could be Boat, coat, soak, toat, zoat etc. Even if the words are not real words, the sound of the new silly word is funny to them. As magicians, we can use this in our performances and possibly create funny magical words that play off this idea. - Made up Sentences: This goes along with the vocal concepts mentioned above. The idea is as children develop their skills with words, they often like to make up sentences that really have no meaning to them. To children, this is exploring and having fun with the new tool of communication. As a magician I can use this idea in the storylines I create or the magic words I have the children say. If I know that this makes children laugh, I can adapt my routines to use this principle. - Things That Don't Belong Together: As children develop in their learning capacity, they start to associate the words they say with physical objects that represent them. Saying cat now is not just a sound but they know what a cat is and what the cats do and the sounds they make. What is interesting is that children now find this new found power as empowering to them. If a magician can get something wrong that the child knows is right, they feel empowered to correct the magician and they also find it funny. If I state that a cat goes MOOOO, the children will laugh and want to correct me. - Physical Comedy: No one quite knows for sure why it is that children tend to laugh at things that physically happen to the magician or anyone. If I accidentally hit myself on the head with a funny magic wand, children will find it funny. If I suddenly get my finger caught in the zipper of a change bag, kids will laugh. I think part of this stems from their own play world and from cartoons they see on TV. Knowing physical comedy is funny to a child can open the doors to possibilities in your own routines. There are certainly a lot more that I have come across in both research and personal experience that I could share with you. However, I will leave it at this for now. This should give you a good idea of not only what makes children laugh but some of the reasoning behind it. If we know what makes children laugh, then we can strive to be better children's performers. As always I encourage you to let me know your own thoughts on the subject. If you have any ideas, thoughts or suggestions for future articles please e-mail me at magic4u02@aol.com. -------------------------------------------- 8. They're delicious all-edible confections made of sugar-paste, which is a kind of British marzipan-like fondant icing you roll out and cover cakes with or make decorations with like these. It tastes just like the marshmallow charms in Lucky Charms breakfast cereal! It dries hard but it still smells yummy even after two years. They are created by Cindy Atmore, artist and writer. She is absolutely no relation to Joe Atmore, the famous Dunninger expert and star of the DVD Joseph Atmore is Dunninger, and I kind of wish people would stop asking about that. Peace, Danny Archer The MINDvention mentalism convention featuring; Eugene Burger, Jeff McBride, Ross Johnson, Guy Bavli, John Archer (UK), Patrick Redford, Sean Taylor (Australia) & Joe Atmore (Dunninger Radio Show recreation) is coming up October 7th-9th, 2007 in Las Vegas .... Pat Hennessy Passed Away -------------------------------------------- Message from Ron Wilson (US) My dear old friend Pat Hennessy passed away in the hospital this afternoon. Pat had been a Castle member since 1966 and performed a tremendous amount of work for us over the years, pro bono. He will be sadly missed. -------------------------------------------- 10. Taylor's Magic Shop MagiClinic -------------------------------------------- Message from Sean Taylor (Aust) MagiClinic - Next Monday - 3rd September - 7.30pm - $15 - All welcome I realised yesterday, in a conversation with a close friend, that there is a misconception about MagiClinic. Remember, you do not have to perform. Naturally, we prefer it if you do perform something and I think it gives you an opportunity to road test something you may be working on among friends. There are video clips on the big screen, demos and performances and this month we go sleightly mental. Our Special guest for Meet a Magician is Timothy Hyde. Timothy is one of Australia's best known professionals and one of only handful of working mentalists in Australia. His career spans the full gamut of magic disciplines from close-up to stage magic, MC work, Key Note Speaking, Mentalism and of course his wonderful comedy illusion act with his partner The Amazing Lynda. Timothy also operates Mozzie, the Australian Magician's information service and has a full list of resources for working professionals looking to crank up their marketing and professionalism. Tim will take us through his career and will answer your questions. Don't miss this opportunity to meet a top flight professional. Performers: We'd like to see some effects with a mental flavour this month so bring some mental magic or mentalism to perform! -------------------------------------------- 11. A Different Kind Of Magic -------------------------------------------- Message from Walter Blaney (US) To a few close friends and family. A different kind of magic. You can see it happen now on youtube. Four years ago my ice skating daughter Shannon got breast cancer, had the double mastectomy, the long chemotherapy and radiation treatments, the whole works. And thank goodness she was cured and is today totally well and skating up a storm again. Three fourths of the way through Shannon's chemo treatments the skaters from across the USA who all know Shannon chipped in to fly her to the nationals competition of the United States Figure Skating Assn. (USFSA) in Lake Placid, NY. She had won the gold medal the year before (ladies 35 years and older). She of course could not compete on this trip but would be among all her skating friends and stars, which would be good therapy in itself. So she and her husband Monty flew to Lake Placid. Everyone was aware of Shannon's health challenge, and during the competition they introduced her as a real fighter that she is. She stood in acknowledgment, and the big crowd gave her a standing ovation. Then to everyone's surprise she went onto the ice and skated a beautiful program to the music of Amazing Grace. No big jumps and spins this time, but it was with Amazing Grace that she skated her program so well. Then another standing "O", and a hug at the end from husband Monty. A pretty touching scene, knowing the circumstances. Indeed it was a magical night for the Blaney/Keeler clan. If you wish you can see it happen at: youtube.com/ShannonKeeler Click on the main large picture that says Shannon Keeler skating to Amazing Grace. Shannon went on to finish her chemo treatments and radiation which all saved her life. She now actively works in the fight against breast cancer whenever she can. Thanks for listening, Walter Walter Blaney ----------------- 12. The Amazing Orchante Saga ----------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) Page 13 Mike Walsh and producer David Price are sitting in Mike's office. It's the only room in 'The Cottage', which actually looks like an office. It's comfortable, but certainly not what you might expect from the man who is the host of Australia's most Networked TV show. The rest of the cottage is a happy fusing of a private dwelling, in a 'nice' suburban street in Artarmon and, a mad house! It seems to work well for all who work in it. A quick briefing on the day's show - segments on acupuncture, a man who says he can catch arrows in his hands, personalities... The phone rings, David takes the call. Mike finishes his coffee: white no sugar. Mike Williams is watching the first run-through with the orchestra. The singer stops while musical director Geoff Harvey makes a pencil mark on the arrangement and they start again from the top. The cameras try all angles. Director Brian Phyllis walks through the studio; on-camera wardrobe is checked for the cameras and lights. Sound level marked. In make-up, the girls open their little cases and turn on the monitor set by habit. "A well oiled machine." the words of David Price. "Everyone knows his or her job. They are specialists. Good ones"! As Mike Williams returns from the studio, Sue is hunting down a visiting guest who has disappeared somewhere between 'Hilton' and the studios. It is 10.33a.m. As he walks past the switchboard, Rosa calls out to him: a call is waiting. The first of about 25, he will take in the next hour. Agents and artists are looking for dates. "The ones that are the hardest of all to handle are the mothers who think that 'Little Johnny', is going to be a star, it is always a question of evaluation. Of all the calls, 40 % are successful in their goal - to get a talent on the show. Coping with some calls takes effort, diplomacy - it is wearing". In the past year, since the show moved to Channel 9 and Mike Williams became talent co-ordinator - as well as keeping his role of Production co-ordinator - he has settled in, and has seen his part as a member of the team assume broader perspectives. "I am more involved now than ever. There is quite a lot of planning and discussion about the variety content". At Channel 10, he was working for the station. Now he works for 'Price Hayden Productions', who package the show for Channel 9. He's now one of the family. So are the journalists, researchers and assistants - all 12 or so permanent staff. Invariably after the show there is lunch. Its length depends on outside factors, but sometimes it grows into dinner as well. Mike slots in a young singer on his schedule board and glances at his watch. Time to get back to the studio, where he joins Mike Walsh in his dressing room. It is 28 minutes to midday. Mike Walsh is preparing, - Mike Williams cracks a gag. They laugh and somebody knocks, to pass Mike Williams a brief message. The two Mikes chat for another 15 minutes about the day's show. Make-Up has just finished de-shining faces and balding heads, and touching up eyes and lips. The studio audience fills every seat. Mike Williams is clowning around - the 'Warm-Up', which precedes every show. Mike Walsh joins in. Geoff Harvey shouts across the floor. Camera crew come to a stop, and hands are poised for the 'Count-Down', as the control booth issues instructions to the floor. ONE MILLION HANDS REACH OUT TO TUNE INTO CHANNEL 9. THE 1324TH MIKE WALSH SHOW IS - LIVE ON AIR! The pressure changes intensity, but it won't burst until 1.30 E S T, about 20 guests later. Of these, at least two will be performers; two out of a staggering total of over 3600! Not all different, of course, except they are all different, if you see what I mean. "We try to get a balance in the variety programming. And more and more attention is paid to the production of the entertainment segments", comments Mike Williams. "We have a unique format - unique in the world", adds Mike Walsh. "It is not like any other talk-show, it is informative and varied", but as David Price points out, "There is no editorialising, just information and, Variety". Page 14 There is little doubt that the hugely successful and popular 'Mike Walsh Show', (MWS) can draw the public's attention to artists, especially the regular performers - like Mike Williams for example. He brought out a single called 'Slow Dancing' which sold in excess of 12,000 copies and his club show bookings jumped dramatically. Other regulars have also benefited - Diana Horder, Maria Venuti and Jade Hurley, who was a 'Bonanza for the Show' according to David Price. Newest addition to the regular stable is Geraldine Doyle. She in some ways typifies the success of the 'zany' personalities in the shows format. The overall cross section of talent that has appeared on the show is simply mind-boggling. Visiting overseas stars, club circuit singers, comics, 'Unusual's' like John Michael-Howson and 'The Amazing Orchanté', a kiwi entertainer who emigrated from New Zealand with his wife/stage assistant less than two years ago - have made quite an impact on the local club scene; and there is more to come. The company has signed Barry Humphries for his first stage appearances in Australia in three years. Needless to say he will appear on the show regularly. Tentatively titled 'Isn't It a Shame at His Age', the show opens in Melbourne on May 24th before coming to Sydney. It is another move in the diversification of the Hayden Price organisation. There is the Regent Theatre at Richmond, where Mike Walsh shows current movies, like 'Star Wars - and live stage shows - like Kamahl and Slim Dusty. The Mike Walsh Show, apart from being a major employer of Australian talent provides more than just an ego trip. It is a valuable experience for artists who seldom get a chance to work in front of TV cameras these days. There is also always the possibility that purely through exposure on the MWS; their Careers get a healthy boost. The audience is vast, national, and regular. Mike Walsh, who spends a good nine hours a day at being something of a phenomenon and a legend in television, is a vital element in the show's success. And yet in the down to earth, no bullshit atmosphere of 'The Family' in 'The Cottage', he blends. This is a little evidence of - 'This is the Mike Walsh residence - the job is too exacting for any of that rubbish. "Sometimes I say 'Poor Mick', I don't feel like being Mike Walsh today, it's not always possible to be on top of the world for five days a week". But the point is, ONLY HE ever knows that. EPILOGUE I wonder if any of those artists are still performing today (I surely would be, if I hadn't contracted emphysema, which forced me to retire from show business eleven years ago - Dec. 1996). Mike Williams for example, has become some sort of carpenter on one of those 'Do-It-Yourself' type Television programmes. Jade Hurley was one of the top performers on the Sydney club circuit (maybe he still is - do remember that I am talking about 1976/78 here, 31/33 years ago); where ARE those regular 'stars' now, and what are they doing? The mind boggles! As I said in the first paragraph of page 10, we were most fortunate to appear on the Mike Walsh Show - twice in just over a month; we had been in the country barely three months! No wonder there was 'mutterings' among other speciality acts, especially those who had been on the club circuit for years before we arrived, but had never managed to 'crack' television. There's no doubt that our exposure on the MWS played a part in our early success on the Sydney club circuit, and beyond. Another popular television show which created enormous publicity for us was: Simon Townsend's 'Wonder World'; we appeared on that several times. It wasn't a live broadcast as was the MWS. Although aimed specifically for a younger audience, a hell of a lot of adults watched it as well. Wonder World, which broadcast daily at 4pm - again with a viewing audience of 'millions', was also networked across Australia. 'God', or whatever, was very kind to us - most of the time in Australia! -------------------------------------------- 13.
