See you there. Next issue of Magic New Zealand will be published around the 15 July. ----------------------- Remember if you have any magic news drop me a line: AW@Alan-Watson.com -------------------------------------------- 2. 100 Years Of Magic In Australia -------------------------------------------- Message from Ross Skiffington (Aust) I am completing the script for the show celebrating 100 Years of Magic for the Australian Society of Magicians, IT'S MAGIC, and I think it's going to be a top notch smorgasbord of fabulous magic. There were a number of performers invited to participate but unfortunately some, who would have loved to have been on the bill, were either working or had other commitments. Sadly, it's always the way, but the line up should excite those who are going to attend. Without giving anything away there will be 6 International Magicians and 6 Australian Magicians, 16 dancers and junior magicians plus 6 in The Ross Skiffington Grand Magic Company. There will be lots of variety and something for everyone. It has truly been a privilege to get this show together and believe me when I say, I am sincerely humbled and most grateful of the personal commitment to this celebration and the generous considerations by all the artists, dancers and technicians. In particular Charles Gauci, the President of the ASM, and also John McKissock, from Clearlight Shows. Without the valuable contributions of all, this show would simply not happen at all. This is a once in a lifetime event and I trust that you will enjoy the experience. -------------------------------------------- 3. S.A.M. Magic Club Leadership Training -------------------------------------------- Message from Mark (US) Do you remember that one program at your magic club that was so successful? Would you like all of your programs to be like that? Whether you are a club Officer, or just an interested member, the Leadership Training program at the S.A.M. Dallas Convention (Friday, July 6 at :00) will be filled with valuable ideas to take back to your magic club. A panel of experts, representing small, medium and large clubs will be there to share their ideas, and listen to yours. Marlene Clark, Mark Weidhaas, and Stan "Doc" Seaton will guide the discussion. This will be one program that you will want to take lots of notes! Your club will be grateful you did. ----------------- 4. Re: The Long Awaited Book On Maurice Fogel ----------------- Message from Paul Daniels (UK) I have not seen the book yet BUT for all those who have no idea who Maurice Fogel was, I can tell you that this man was easily the most powerful presenter of mentalism I have ever seen. He POWERED onto the stage and really delivered the show. Even when you knew how he was doing the stuff, he made you believe in the magic of the mind. -------------------------------------------- 5. 'Remarkable Magic' #13 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message from - Nick Lewin (US) Remarkable Magic: tearing and restoring cigarette papers. One of the very few pieces of sleight of hand that I have wanted to perform but never have; is the torn and restored cigarette paper. This is an effect of such simplicity that it stands right next to the Gypsy Thread as a piece of eye and brain candy. The first time I made a mental note of the trick was when I read about it in the Al Koran book. I read the description and storyline of the effect as it was presented in the book and decided that I had to learn how to perform it. After a long time thinking about and tearing up cigarette papers I wasn't more than a step along the journey to being able to present it. I just couldn't quite turn the written words in the book into a routine that I felt was worthy of the idea as it was described on paper. Like any other routine that I liked, but didn't feel comfortable performing, I put it aside and let it remain somewhere in the back of my brain. Sometime that uncomfortable 'niggle' in your subconscious mind turns into a fully fledged pearl over time. This one didn't. Every now and then I would address the effect again and see if things had changed. They didn't. I would tear up enough cigarette papers to cause rejoicing at the 'Zig Zag' company and then put the idea on hold again. After a while I took the nucleus of the presentation from the Koran effect and it evolved into my Gypsy Thread routine. This was certainly a step in the right direction but it always left me with a slightly disappointed feeling that I hadn't been able to 'deliver the goods.' I had never seen him perform it live but when Martin Lewis marketed his 'Undivided' routine I read the advertisement for his version of the T & R cigarette paper and phoned my order in immediately. I had a feeling that finally here was the answer to my desire to perform the trick. Let me say at this point that I am a huge fan of Martin Lewis. Quirky and brilliant he is a performer who manages to make a trick commercial to an audience without ever compromising on the skill needed to perform it. The fact that Martin is such a genuinely funny performer never interferes with him truly delivering a gem of a routine that is as thoroughly polished as a diamond from a Beverly Hills jeweler's store. I eagerly waited for the package to arrive containing the VHS tape and props that comprised the effect that Martin was selling. The moment the small package arrived I rushed to view the video. I was stunned at the trick I saw on the tape: it was everything I could ever have wanted it to be. I watched the performance segment of that tape five or six times in amazement. Here was an effect that was so clean and beautifully constructed that it took my breath away. I then got into the serious business of working on the mechanics of the handling that Martin was teaching. Learning that routine was as close to a perfect lesson in stand-up sleight of hand as I have ever experienced. There was not a false move in the entire thing: best of all there were moments of sheer genius that truly lifted it into a thing of beauty. I can flatly state that learning that routine caused me more pleasure than almost any other effect I have worked on. His instructions were thorough and his attention to detail a delight. He finally allowed me to perform the effect that I had seen it in my mind for so many years, I suppose the conventional end to this column would be to say I put the effect into my show and have used it ever since. Actually I haven't done so yet (although I will one day) because it remains such a perfect learning experience to me. I carry the various bits and pieces needed to present it in my working case and every now and then rehearse it. It is my ace in the hole. Thank you for sharing it Martin-you've made me a better performer and solved a mystery that puzzled me for years! As always send any bricks or bouquets to nicklewin@earthlink.net and check out my website at http://www.NickLewin.com -------------------------------------------- 6. Broken Wand - Capt. Jim Fisher -------------------------------------------- Message from Maria Ibanez Society of American Magicians President Elect It is with a sad and heavy heart that I send word of the passing, last evening, of Capt. Jim Fisher. Capt Fisher was President of Assembly 266, he was also a charter member of the assembly. Capt. Fisher was a respected and much loved member of the magic community and will be sorely missed by all who knew him. My family and I send our deepest condolences to his family and many friends and to the members of Assembly 266 who have lost a great friend and President. His passing was much quicker than had been expected; they had been told he had maybe three weeks to live. No info at present on services but as soon as I hear anything I will pass the word along. The magic world is much poorer for his loss. Thank you for all the notes of condolence you have sent - I will forward them all to Jim Zachary Past International President of S.A.M. and friend of Capt. Fisher so he may get those to the family. -------------------------------------------- 9. FISM Update June 07 -------------------------------------------- Message from Eric Eswin FISMInternational President FISM is the International Federation of Magic SOCIETIES and therefore all communications from the FISM organisations mostly take place with the presidents of the member-societies. They will pass the information to their individual members. For different reasons this passing through of information doesn't work or will only come much later. The result is a (temporary) lack of information by individual magicians. To bridge this information gap and because we all share the same interest and passion for magic but rarely have the opportunity to gather and share our knowledge outside of the FISM conventions and championships, a FISM newsletter will be introduced. You as an individual Magician can impact on how FISM is moving forward if you want to participate in the work we do. Our goal throughout this newsletter is to keep you informed of what's happening within the FISM community and to create an environment that allows to share our experiences, desires and objectives. So take action today and get involved with us in the reflexion and development of the magic world! Since its creation in 1948, FISM has worked at uniting and enhancing the magic art worldwide, to defend the interests of magic and magicians. FISM is developing just as fast as the outside world. With now 74 clubs from 40 countries worldwide that regroup over 50,000 magicians, FISM is still continuously changing. This does not mean we are always right in what we are doing but we believe that by trying new things we will go further to better fulfill our objectives now and in the future. With your participation, feedback and involvement we believe we will improve for the benefit of all. We hope that you will find the newsletter to be an exciting addition to FISM and as always, we look forward to receiving your comments to improve our organisation. Eric Eswin FISM International President 60th Anniversary of FISM 1948 - 2008... next year will be the 60th anniversary of FISM and we wish to fully celebrate this event with you. So why not publishing a 60th anniversary book full of pictures and stories from 1948 through 2008. We would like to create a committee to handle these celebrations. So if you have a little bit of time, are passionate about Magic and FISM, have great ideas, please contact us as soon as possible by email at press@fism.org FISM Partners with Hanky-Panky Magic Toys FISM has officially signed a partnership with Hanky-Panky Magic Toys (H-P Magic Toys), the world leading manufacturer of magic toys for children. H-P Magic Toys has been creating magic toys kits since 1961 and can be accredited with creating a love for magic for many famous magicians today. Children are tomorrow's magicians and the partnership will serve FISM goals of bringing magic to children and the general public. Other Ways to Stay Connected Media Board There are other ways to stay up-to-date with the happenings within FISM. The Media Board within the FISM website or directly accessible at www.fism.info is constantly updated with useful information for all of the Magic Community. News articles, pictures, document files available to download, upcoming events and announcements are all presented on the Media Board. We invite you to explore the Media Board and to use whatever might be of interest. Local Correspondents FISM is looking for volunteers to help to bring this newsletter to more magicians around the world. We cannot ask everybody to speak English. So anyone who has the desire to work with us, a little bit of free time and some ability in any other language is welcome. Also if you feel your country is or should be in the forefront of the development of Magic and you want to report these progresses, please contact us today at press@fism.org to become a FISM Reporter. -------------------------------------------- 10. Broken Wand - Jack Barrows - 1935-2002 -------------------------------------------- Message from Rick Fisher (US) Jack Barrows who was a friend to magicians world over passed away peacefully on June 26th at the age of 72. For the past four years he was our sales manager here at FAB Magic in Colon but more importantly he was my friend for over 35 years. His magic friends count in the hundreds and he helped many magicians in their youth, including myself. He was so very proud of their accomplishments but never took the spotlight for all that he did. He owned and operated a magic shop in Elkhart called the "Square Circle" and published a magic monthly called "The Magician". He wrote three books on magic, "Introduction To Magic", "Magic Won" and "All For the Best". His articles on magic appeared in several publications and devotion and dedication to the art of magic were second to none. We all will miss him. A memorial service will be held during magic week here in Colon at the Lakeside cemetery on Friday August 3rd at 3pm. Rest in peace my friend..... -------------------------------------------- 12. British Ring Convention 2007 -------------------------------------------- Message from Bob Hayden Dan Dunn, Kevin King, Rob Torres, Romany and Ray Allen with Lord Charles have now been added to the long list of world class talent appearing at the British Ring Convention Southport 12th to 16th September 2007. Over the decades organisers of the British Ring Convention have strived to include The Great Tomsoni & Co. in their programme. Regretfully it has not been possible to do so.  Last year we had hoped it would happen but due to contractual commitments our hopes were dashed.  However a pledge was made to come this year. So at long last British Ring conventioneers will be able to enjoy the world famous act of The Great Tomsoni & Co. 'Poland's Greatest Magician'.  Mark Tan in Variety, the USA's showbiz newspaper quotes 'their act is quite baffling as well as the best comedy team in show business' while Jim Parker in the Las Vegas Revue Mirror says 'Tomsoni is to magic what Victor Borge is to music..Simply hilarious!'.  So in Southport we will relish the act of one of the funniest people in magic. Not only The Great Tomsoni a.k.a. Johnny Thompson be performing in the final International Magic Show he will also be delivering 'An Hour with Johnny Thompson' filling the Jeffery Atkins Memorial Lecture spot.  Something that is not generally known is that Johnny is in constant demand as a consultant and inventor by all the major names in the magic business.  Miss this prestigious lecture and you will miss a memorable magical experience. It will come, as a complete surprise to many to discover that a world acclaimed comedy magician has never appeared at one of our Conventions.  This will be rectified this year when David Williamson presents 'The David Williamson Experience' when ninety minutes of mayhem and madness will ensue.  It was back in 1981 that David burst upon the magic scene when he took first place in the International Brotherhood of Magicians Sleight of Hand competition and in the same year becoming the first recipient of the prestigious Golden Cups Award for excellence in Close-up magic.  He has also on two occasions been voted Sleight of Hand Magician of the Year by his peers at Hollywood's renowned Magic Castle as well as twice being awarded both The Magic Castle Lecturer of the Year' and 'The Magic Castle Parlour Magician of the Year'.  At the 2003 Den Haag F.I.S.M. Convention he was voted 'Most Wanted Magician'. His best selling book 'Williamson's Wonders' has been translated into four languages and he has produced several instructional D.V.D.'s. We are promised that David will be popping up all over the Convention so you will be seeing a lot of him.  You will forever regret the opportunity of seeing and meeting this esteemed magical legend if you are not at Southport. Joanie Spina, who describes herself as a performance coach, will give one of this year's scheduled workshops.  She is probably best known for choreographing several of David Copperfields early television specials.  During her eleven years with David she redressed the art of magic with flair of the calibre of Broadway and Hollywood productions.  Her collaboration with one of the worlds most respected conjurers raised the statute of magic to new heights and ensured the validity of the art into the 21st century. Latterly she launched Spina Creative Services launching numerous shows as well as individual performers in the pursuit of artistic perfection.  Because of her calm approach both producers and performers enjoy working with Joanie.  By nurturing and giving heaps of encouragement she makes performers comfortable to take chances.  Her keen eye is able to troubleshoot and smooth out rough edges in existing productions.  She has a superior artistic sensibility and a great feeling for timing and pacing.  She is gifted with an ear for music and is able to research and select music that best suits the production. Last year Conventioneers were inspired by Seth Hyken and Tim Conover and made their Tradeshow Workshops a highlight of the Convention.  It is predicted Joanie's workshop will this year do the same and become one of this year's highlights.  Her advice will be of benefit to every performer attending. No matter whether they perform on stage, in cabaret, in clubs, at dinners or for children.  This is a lady who has worked and guided a number of the world's magic stars! Come, listen, absorb and implement her advice.  It will be to your advantage and you will never regret it. Children's entertainers will not want to miss the performance and lecture of New York's Alan Garber affectionally known as Magic Al.  For 25 years he has been the king of Long Island's birthday circuit entertaining adults and children alike with his fine tuned balance of silliness and magic maintaining a performing schedule of three hundred to four hundred shows a year. Seventy-five percent of his shows are kid shows, the remainder being for families and adults.  His trademark is in his dress. He wears tuxedo tails with flunky sneakers. In 2004 he teamed up with a producer and a director and wrote a theatre show, which played in one of New York City's many off Broadway theatres.  For the first and only time since its successful run he will be doing the show on two occasions at the Southport Arts Centre Theatre.  In the main magicians will make up the audience on both occasions with about 100 local children sitting in front for Al to work to.  After a short break the children will leave and Al will present his lecture about the show to the magicians.  Magic Al will also feature in Saturday afternoon's Children's Showtime at the Arts Centre theatre. For Children's entertainers this lecture and show should be a must. The British Ring is proud to introduce to this country Canada's premiere illusionists Murray Hatfield & Teresa at its Convention. From the moment they take the stage they thrill the audience with their award winning mix of magic, music, dance, comedy and stunning illusions. Murray and Teresa incorporate a great deal of comedy in their show often with the help of a member of the audience.  These volunteers become the true stars of the show as they assist with the magical chaos.  A testimonial from the sponsors of the World Festival of Magic - Australia/New Zealand Tour reads 'Murray Hatfield & Teresa carried the 15-week tour to new and resounding successes'. We eagerly await Murray & Teresa at Southport If you have not already registered for this great extravaganza of magic do it today by contracting the registration Officer Neville Johnson on 01202 873234 or by e.mail nevillejohnson25@aol.com remember you can download a registration form from this website and you can make payment by Paypal. The Amazing Orchante Saga ----------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) Page 3 The problem for me was that more than 99% of the clubs booked all their entertainment through various entertainment agencies, and they sure had the scene sewn up tight. Most of the clubs (Returned Services League and Football clubs) had their shows scheduled at least two months ahead. So, although my Press cuttings and publicity from New Zealand was attention grabbing, and the various secretary and club managers I met through Bill were suitably impressed, I still couldn't get work; they kept referring me to umpteen different agencies. After ringing a few, the first thing they wanted know was - "Where are you working so we can come and have a look at your show?" Difficult when you can't get booked! To make ends meet, I had to resort to going to various restaurants, showing them 'my wares' and performing close-up magic. They weren't anything special or flash - no contracts or tax was involved, just cash in hand; the money was peanuts, but I had to pay our way somehow. For me, performing magic like that it was quite mortifying but, when needs must. besides - it was good practice. The 'Orchanté Luck', strikes again! Bill takes me to the Wentworthville Leagues Club, another of which he was a member. The Secretary Manager was Clive Herring, a really nice and agreeable chap. He was one of the very few who freelanced and did his own entertainment bookings - not relying on what agents sent him. He knew what sort of acts went well for his club; he had lists of all the better agents and what acts they had on their books, and HE would choose which artists HE wanted. Sunday the 15th of August - exactly fifteen days after we had arrived, we performed our first ever show in Australia - at the 'WENTY' (as it was commonly called) Leagues Club! Our show went down a storm! Afterwards, we finished up in the club restaurant for a meal, and a congratulatory bottle or two of wine etc. Naturally, the close-up magic started - Clive was gob-smacked, and he asked me if I would consider performing the 'close-up' in the restaurant on an assortment of nights for him! I worked the close-up magic for several weeks at the 'Wenty's' restaurant, as well as continuing with the 'El Cheapos' for a short time then, things started moving. The following Sunday, the 22nd of August, we did an afternoon show at the Fairfield RSL. Apparently, one of the acts hadn't turn up for some reason; the secretary manager remembered us, and that we were staying at Bills home. He rang to see if we could fill in - we did! Twenty-two days in the country and it seems as if doors are starting to open. More so when, on the following Thursday when I was working my close-up at the 'Wenty', Clive rebooked our show for the Fri. 3rd, Sat. 4th and Sun. 5th of September. We were the support act for Australia's Top TV 'Star' at the time - Don Lane, an American who resided in Australia. The look of disbelief on Clive's' face when I said, "Who's He?" was a sight to behold. The 'Done Lane Show', which also included famous Australian personality - Bert Newton, as 'Second Banana', was the hottest Variety Show on Television, and had been for some years before we arrived in Aussie. How would we know that, after all, we had only been in the Country 'five minutes' - as it were! few years later, it all went 'Pear Shaped' for Done Lane when he had The Amazing James Randi, as a guest artist one night. James had arrived in Australia because several water diviners were claiming his offer of One Million Dollars, saying they could 'prove' that they were the 'genuine article' (they didn't). On the TV show, Don Lane asked James about Uri (spit, spit) Geller, James's pet subject. 'The Amazing Randi', proceeded to demonstrate how Geller fakes 'Spoon Bending' etc. when suddenly, Done Lane, obviously a believer in Geller (the fool), TOTALLY 'LOST IT'- ON LIVE TELEVISION, IN FRONT OF A VEIWING ADIENCE OF MILLIONS! In an outrageous, unbelievable fit of temper and behaviour, he wildly slung his arm across the table, and swept the spoons, forks, everything - off the table in front of James, sending it flying in all directions across the studio, then stormed off the stage! Veronica and I were among the huge viewing audience to witness this astonishing episode. We just sat, as I guess the rest of the millions of other viewers did - in stunned silence! -------------------------------------------- 15.
