Meetings With Remarkable Magicians # 20 - Nick Lewin -------------------------------------------- Message from Nick Lewin (US) An audience with the Coney Island Fakir I recently wrote about the excitement of waiting for the postman to deliver that package from the magic store. I was amazed and delighted that so many people responded in a positive manner. Almost without exception everyone who emailed me took the time to mention his first real magic store. You remember your first real magic store; that's the one where the owner actually knew your name and only recommended tricks that might actually suit you! I had the most fleeting of meetings in a magic store back in the seventies. I was staying in a very dilapidated hotel in New York and had just taped an episode of the popular children's show "Wonderama." The taping had shaken my nerves till my teeth rattled. I had never been exposed to overexcited New York pre-teens before and they had been quite a shock to my system. Having never spent any time in New York I was determined to visit its two most famous magic stores. I had a pocket full of taxi money and was ready to go. To be honest I was very disappointed when I arrived at Tannens; I mean it looked fine, very brisk and organized but something was missing. There didn't seem to be a lot of heart plus the good tricks were not on display. They didn't like being asked too many questions either which is a pain. Nothing to excite a magician who spent his early years, in London with Ken Brooke in his legendary "Magic Place." Fortunately I had saved the best for last and I was in for a treat when the yellow cab driver dropped me off in front of Al Flosso's magic store. The moment I walked into Flosso's shop I just stood there gulping for air! It was without doubt the least tidy, most messy and astonishingly disorganized place I had ever seen. It was wonderful and I loved it. There were just piles and piles of books and props stacked from floor to ceiling in every direction the eye could see. Years later when I served as magical consultant on Steven Spielberg's "Amazing Stories" part of my work was to create a magic shop. I simply recreated Al's amazing emporium and it worked perfectly for the show. As I looked around the stacks of magic I introduced myself to Mr. Flosso and told him I brought special regards from Ken Brooke. As usual this acted as a perfect opening mantra and Al and I began to talk magic. I don't remember much that we spoke about but I know I enjoyed his company. At one point Flosso turned to me and said, "Did you need anything special?" I looked around the prop filled shop and expecting to get a little laugh I said, "How about a nailwriter. It was the smallest prop I could think off." Al Flosso was off and running though and dived into a stack of boxes, removed one, retrieved three smaller boxes from within it. Removed an old manila envelope from the smallest of the boxes and then shook a nail writer onto my palm. I was very impressed. The store may have looked random and disorganized but Al knew where everything was. I loved that quality. Before I left the store Flosso told me I HAD to get a spotted can trick; it was "A natural" for me. That's the dumb trick where the spots come off the can and end up on the silks. I had my doubts, but Al said I had to get it so I did. I never saw Al again but years later finding the spotted can in the back of my cupboard I put it in my act. Flosso was right of course; it was a natural for me. Please send all bricks and bouquets to nicklewin@earthlink.net -------------------------------------------- 6. The Passing Of Trudy Loew -------------------------------------------- Message from Maria Ibáñez Society of American Magicians National President Elect It is with deep sadness that I write this notice of the passing of Trudy Loew, she was preceded in death by husband Emil. Trudy was a gentle soul who made everyone feel welcome and always had a smile for everyone. If there is any comfort to be had, it is in the fact that Trudy didn't suffer much as she went in the hospital the latter part of last week and passed away peacefully last evening. Services will be held tomorrow, July 26, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. Blasberg, Rubin & Zilbert 720 - 71st Street Miami Beach, Florida 305-865-2353 Rest in Peace dear Trudy. -------------------------------------------- 7. What Is A Magical Partner? -------------------------------------------- Message from Kelly Peron (US) A magical partner is a term that I have not often heard used by anyone. It is a term that I feel very strongly about. To me a magical partner is a person male or female who not only assists a magician but also plays an intricate role in the shows and performances. They are able to discuss specific issues with each other, such as performing, financial, costuming and choreography, how to set up the show etc. without feeling like their ideas do not count or have meaning .These items are just the tip of the iceberg as to what you as a magical partner can take part in. A magical partner to me is much more than being just an assistant. The terms I hear people use most often are assistant, box jumper and stage hand, however I rarely hear the term magical partner. If you want to take a more active role in magic, then maybe becoming a magical partner is for you. As a magical partner you are sharing the magic with each other and you feel like you are part of a team. Along with assisting a magician a magical partner can help in many different ways both on stage and off. You are a very important part of who they are, what they do, and their role in the magic community. Some of the ways your role as a partner can help are, the creative process, the marketing, loading and unloading of props, setting up the show and more. Working along side my husband Kyle we both share equally in the responsibilities and tasks that make our show what it is. We do many of the things listed above together, and you as a magical partner can as well. First, helping with the creative process can take on many forms. By helping with the creative process you can help each other to come up with ideas for an act, what works, what doesn't work, and how to sequence certain acts or the best way to perform an illusion. It also gives a second set of eyes to a routine that may or may not be right. You can help each other creatively by watching videos, reading books or lecture notes, and even seeing live performances for ideas. For example, recently I was watching a video on stage movement and choreography, and I saw a move that I felt would be appropriate for our sword basket illusion. I called Kyle over and we watched it together, and then decided to work on the move together to see if it would work for us. This is just one example of how your role as a magical partner can help with the creative process of magic. Another way the magical partner can help is with the marketing. By this I mean, both of you can help research where you might want to perform, take phone calls, send out press releases, mail the promotional packets, keep up the database, emails, book the shows and gather as much information as you can. Everyone knows that to run a successful magic business there is an awful lot that takes place off the stage. It is one reason why they call it "show business". Often people are not aware of just how much is involved in the running of a magic business when you are not performing. If you are involved in a magical partnership, the roles and responsibilities listed above are divided equally. You are both working together as a team to help things run smoothly, and for the ultimate success of the business. Finally, when you both arrive or leave the venue or event, while either of you may be busy meeting with the client, the other person can help get things moving by unloading or loading the items into/from your vehicle, and begin to either set them up or break down. This saves time especially if you are back to back with another entertainer or band, like at a big festival or fair. By doing this, it helps both of you feel less rushed. Sometimes, you or your partner may also need to run the sound. I do this for Kyle and even when he decides to change a routine mid show, I know what music to play because I know the show because I am an equal part in our show. If you know the show, you can also help by setting up the show alongside the magician. Either of you should know what tricks, illusions and acts you both will be doing. If you are performing at a theater, either of you can also strike the stage, check out the lighting and do sound checks etc. Knowing the show is a huge advantage to being a magical partner. In conclusion, your role as a magical partner is much more than just being a magician's assistant. By doing some or all of the above, you feel like you are an equal partner, and know that you help make the show and the business a success. -------------------------------------------- 8. New Book Test Released -------------------------------------------- Message from Nick Morton Australian mentalist Nick Morton has just released his booktest "A Dangerous Love" to the International community. "A Dangerous Love" is receiving rave reviews from some of Mentalism's top performers. "A Dangerous Love is excellent. I highly recommend it." - Richard Osterlind "This book can be a clever addition to a multi-book telepathy routine. I will add it to my routine." - Chuck Hickok "This book test is one of the best and most direct book tests I have ever seen." - Charles Gauci You can read all about it at the website - www.adangerouslove.com -------------------------------------------- 16. Colour Change Waistcoat -------------------------------------------- Message from Lee Alex. Pleased to announce that my new website is now running fully and a video demo of the "Colour Change Waistcoat" is available for viewing. http://www.magicwaistcoat.com The effect: From red to white to blue plus an optional finale The magician is seen wearing a normal waistcoat, buttoned at the front and worn showing out from under an open jacket. The magician turns to his table to take a prop from the table top. Upon turning back to the audience the waistcoat is seen to have changed colour. This is repeated once more later in the programme, and a third time. This is not intended to be an effect which stands on its own, but more a novel running gag which may be performed ad infinitum throughout a show. Throughout the performance nothing is ever added or taken away. The final effect of the "Colour Change Waistcoat" allows the final colour change to transform the waistcoat displaying the national flag of the country - in the United Kingdom the "Union Jack" and in the United States, the "Stars and Stripes", alternatively a red, white and blue stripe design is available. No less than ten alternative presentations, handlings and ideas are also given in the instructions. Note also that there is currently a 10% discount off all pre-ordered waistcoats. This offer will be limited. The product is available for delivery in August. -------------------------------------------- 17. 28th New Zealand International Magicians Convention -------------------------------------------- Hosted by Palmerston North Magic Circle (Inc) Palmerston North, New Zealand. 20th to 23rd of October 2006 For the registration html form to print off Go to: http://www.joel.co.nz/convention/reg_form.htm Information on the convention Go to: http://www.watson.co.nz/convention.html The Schedule of events Go to: http://www.joel.co.nz/convention/timetable.htm Convention headliners: David Williamson (USA) Lisa Menna (USA) Duane and Mary Laflin (USA) Joel Howlett (Aus) Alan Martell (UK) If you are planning to attend and have not booked - BOOK NOW - as seats are NOW VERY limited. ----------------- 18. The Amazing Orchante Saga ----------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) Page 111 'There were EMOTIONAL SCENES in the Carousel Bar of the MAYFAIR HOTEL, Hastings, on Saturday night when the entertainer Prince Tui Teka made reference to the DEATH OF ABE PHILLIPS. SCORES OF MEN AND WOMEN WEPT as Prince Tui sang "Unchained Melody," a song Mr Phillips helped to make popular'. 'Telegrams of sympathy have been received by Mr Phillips family from numerous New Zealand entertainers - including International Star, John Rowles'.  'Between 300 and 400 men from the Whakatu freezing works, where Mr Phillips worked before turning to a professional singing career about three months ago, will finish work at noon so that they can attend his funeral. This means that the massive freezing works will virtually close down! Mr Phillips's former manager, Mr A. Karauria, said that 1971 would be the first time in the last five years that Abe Phillips had not led the men, working on the chains at Whakatu, in Xmas carols'. Abe was of the 'Ngarauru' tribe, Waitotara, near Wanganui. He came from a large family, as became evident when the newspaper reported that: "15 brothers and sisters and, 40 nephews and nieces are expected to attend the funeral service. Six brothers will be pall bearers." Incidentally, I'm of the 'Ngai Tahu', the Maori tribe of the Southern Islands of New Zealand! My ancestors came from Waimate, a small town south of Christchurch, between Timaru and Oamaru, on the East coast of the South Island. This has been quite a long episode, but if I had reduced it, it would have been an injustice to the memory of our late friend - 'BIG' ABE PHILLIPS! I purposely went to some length in repeating the review from the Hawkes Bay Herald Tribune, as they did a wonderful job in describing the love, affection, admiration and respect that was held for him, not only by his work mates but by his peers also, in all areas of the entertainment industry in New Zealand, as was evident by the huge number of people who attended his funeral! Although Abe was well known in the Hawkes Bay area, and to many N.Z entertainers, it was not until the release of his first and only record "Don't Think You Remember Me", together with his success in the talent quest, that he became known to the general public throughout the country. In the space of just three or four short months, he had won the hearts of all New Zealanders with his fantastic voice! Abe wasn't a magician (although he loved watching magic) but he sure was blessed with a magic voice! I am very proud to have known 'BIG' ABE, and to have been able to call him, MY FRIEND! He was, without a doubt, one of nature's gentlemen! Veronica summed him up beautifully the other day with three simple words, when she said that he was -  "A lovely man" "I'm so sorry Abe, that I wasn't able to attend your funeral Abe. Perhaps my telling the world of your story nearly 32 years later may, in some small way, make up for that! One thing's for sure, over 4000 magicians around the world, now know who you were!" It is a shame that 'the world' was deprived the pleasure of hearing Abe Phillips sing. If you had experenced his incredible voice, you too would have said - "That's Magic!" -------------------------------------------- 19.
