BBC Radio Show - A Story About David Nixon -------------------------------------------- Message from Steve Walker (Aust) I've just been listening to a BBC radio show on the internet called Chain Reaction with comedian Jo Brand interviewing comedy writer Barry Cryer. http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/networks/radio4/aod.shtml?radio4/chainreaction# About 7 mins in there's a story about David Nixon. I don't know how long these -------------------------------------------- 4. From Magician To Speaker Part Five -------------------------------------------- Message Quentin Reynolds Last week we looked at becoming an expert in your field. I showed you how simple it would be for a layman to become an apparent expert on magic - at least on an intellectual level. However we're not talking about you becoming an 'expert' at something you know nothing about. Rather about you becoming a real expert on something you already have at least some expertise in. But the real point I wanted to make is that you probably have more expertise in your potential topic than you realise. The really good speakers walk their talk. Not only have they the intellectual knowledge but also the practical knowledge from real world - in the trenches - experience. Professional speakers make their incomes from many sources. The keynote speech tends to be the highest paid, generally 50 - 60 minutes. At an industry convention this would usually be the opening and closing spots. The first professional speaker I saw live was Rita Davenport at the Balloon Decorator's Convention back in 1991. She was the first event and got the convention off to a flying start. A keynote is given in the main auditorium to all the attendees. The main purpose of a keynote is to set a tone and provide motivation and inspiration. (Unfortunately keynote speakers are not booked for magic conventions. A pity because a really good speaker can literally shake you emotionally. Figuring out how to do this with your own magic perfromances would be a worthwhile exercise) Breakout sessions. A number of sessions take  place at the same time, usually each concentrating on a particlar skill or interest. At a magic convention you might have three breakout sessions running concurrently, one on balloon twisting, one on ventriloquism and the third on performing in restaurants. The breakout session concentrates more on providing information. Workshops to develop specific skills. These can vary from half-day to multi-day training. Sales meetings. This is more like a mini-keynote to a specific group of people for a specific purpose. Consulting and coaching with companies and individuals. Product sales. Books, CDs, DVDs, manuals, courses. After-dinner speaking. This is usually pure entertainment with about 95% humour and 5% message. In a later part we'll look at how some speakers use their talks purely to get business and not as the business itself, and how you as a magician can use speaking to get you more shows. © Quentin Reynolds. Quentin Reynolds works as both magician and speaker. You can read about one of his programs at http://www.speakinschools.com -------------------------------------------- 5. I'm Tired Of Others Taking Credits Of Things We Did 40 Years Ago -------------------------------------------- Message from Bev Bergeron (USA) In the last Magic New Zealand e-zine it was mentioned that Steven's Magic and Ayala EFX (Joaquin Ayala's new company) were going to manufacture and distribute Jonathan Pendragon's 360 levitation. I would like to set the history straight on this levitation. In 1950, while attending the University of Texas I was shown a cloud-making machine on a stage by Walter Blaney. This prompted me to work on a levitation to be done in front of the moving clouds. I worked out the details two years later and put it on paper. Four copies were made and sent to Walter Blaney and two others in magic who were in our group. My solution was to put the levitation on a platform. I had had the experience working with Willard the Wizard to put the Aga levitation under the stage - it required the cutting of a hole - sometimes through a concrete stage. I did not like that - thus the platform. In 1959, I showed that idea and others to Bobby "Torchy" Towner (now Robert Harland). He told Johnny Daniel and Carl Owens who built one for Mark Wilson, to be used on "The Magic Land of Allakazam." Johnny Daniel came up with the idea of putting two swivels in the goose-neck area, which would allow the girl to swing back and forth while rising. During rehearsal I was working with Nani, who was floating, to get the feel of the new prop. Nani was using her upstage hand to move herself back and forth in front of me. She then started to "float all the way around me. I yelled at Mark to pay attention as to what Nani was doing. He was too busy talking on a phone. Later when the levitation was videotaped at CBS-TV and shown on October 8, 1960, Mark only had Nani float back and forth and did not go around his body. This tape can be bought from Mark Wilson and you can see what we did back in 1960. The platform levitation was used also used in our photo shoot for CBS-TV and carried on the cover of "Genii" that year - 1960. We used it many times on fair dates. Now everyone is claiming they came up with the idea. I've never gotten credit for starting the thinking process along with about 50 other effects that others have taken the credit for. It is getting downright tiresome. Does anyone pay attention? Bev Bergeron -------------------------------------------- 7. Fantasma Magic Opens 4500 Square Feet Across From Madison Square Gardens -------------------------------------------- Message from Jack Straw Roger Dreyer of Fantasma Magic has announced they will be opening up by April one of the world's most modern and exclusive magic retail venues. They have signed a 15 year 4500 square foot lease across from Madison Square Garden and Penn Station. Over 40 million people a year will walk in front of their venue. An average Disney theme park gets 10 million visitors. Roger says, "We are trying to make magic the art form it used to be known for. Although the Internet has exposed many of the public to magic, it also lacks the warmth of having someone show you the proper handling or even recommend the appropriate item. Our Fantasma venue will be decorated in an MTV back stage way with a stage, stage lights, 3d holographic projectors, flat screens, high tech cabinets and even a museum featuring Houdini's original metamorphosis trunk." In addition to Fantasma quality magic products (www.fantasmamagic.com ) that are endorsed by the International Brotherhood of Magicians organization, the company has recently signed the US exclusive distribution rights to Colin Rose and his 5 of hearts merchandising assortment. www.colinrosemimc.co.uk Other product lines will include Carl Williams, Viking Magic, Joe Porper, Trix and Magic Land unique items from Japan, and leading European vendors. "We want to appeal to the new consumer in magic as well as the pro that is looking for the best of the best of items that can't be found in any other magic shop let alone on the net." In addition, the store will carry the largest collection of automata, Robert Houdin style music boxes, juggling, optical illusions and more. Fantasma is currently interviewing candidates to be a part of their sales and management team. Salary ranges from $30,000 to $75,000 depending on the amount of retail experience in magic and even more important if the candidate has worked for non magic major retailers. Resumes and photo should be sent to: Attention Roger Dreyer fantasmamagic@aol.com -------------------------------------------- 8. Black Art Lecture - Don Drake -------------------------------------------- Message from Don Drake (US) Hi everyone, I am considering doing a short West Coast lecture tour featuring my new Fantasy In Black 2006 lecture. This one would include my new Moving Wall Blackdrop demo (including a mini-spook show). This is all new and would also have my new close-up routines, including the Alan Ackerman inspired trick, The Shattered King! It would be in late Summer after my Magic Castle lecture on June 4, or early fall. I would prefer to follow the coast line (more or less) up toward Seattle and Vancouver. San Francisco, etc. I am limited to two weeks, because of my wife's medical condition. If you are interested please contact me via e-mail, thank you, Dondrake Visit my website: http://blackartsecrets.com I'll see you at the World Magic Seminar February 19-22 http://worldmagicseminar.com At the 'Orleans Hotel and Casino, In Las Vegas, NV. -------------------------------------------- 1O. 75th Annual Columbus MAGI-FEST -------------------------------------------- Message from Jep Hostetler (US) The 75th Annual Columbus MAGI-FEST, Feb. 2, 3 & 4, 2006 in Columbus, Ohio, U.S., was one of our best ever, with over 900 in attendence and a line-up that was nothing short of sterling. The high-quality Headliner Show, featuring Junge Junge, Dale Salwak, Mark Wade, Kohl and Company, and Greg Frewin was superbly shepherded by Rich Bloch (In my estimation, one of the best in the country). Music by Sunny and Stix. Close-up performances by Rich Bloch, John Carney, Tim Conover, Paul Gertner, Patrick Przysiecki, and David Williamson satisfied even the die-hard close-up magic junkies. They were in a word, terrific. A forum regarding what it takes to be a professional magical entertainer featured Tim Conover, Paul Gertner, Dale Salwak, John Carney and David Williamson. The forum was MC-d by Jep Hostetler, Exec. Director of the convention. It was an excellent way for attenders to interact with working pros. Special lectures, one on pyrotechnics by David Brizius and David Brizius and Carl Day, another on balloons by Tom Vorjohan and Daniel Harron, and a third on walk-around magic by Justin Miller, were well attended and received. Regular plenary lectures by Rich Bloch, Dale Salwak, John Carney and Paul Gertner played to capacity crowds. Tim Kleefeld had timely presentations on his beautiful collection of antique magic sets and other magic memorabilia. The Thursday evening opening show, aptly MC-d by Hank Moorehouse for the ninth year, featured Danny Alan, Brian Cook, Nathaniel Rankin and Glen Cook (The Horse Guy). It was a solid start for the convention. The closing show included David Williamson, Crazy Chaps (Junge Junge), John Carney in a tribute to Faucett Ross, Paul Gertner and Tim Conover. What a delightful way to close the convention. Minor hitches included a much-too-long raffle which interrupted the Sat. evening show, and the shortage of one bus for transportation to the Headliner Show. Both matters will be corrected next year. Hats off to Ron Spangler, Mindy Burden, Bill Krech, Jeff Gould, Jimmy King, Paul Boaz, Hermann Carr and Mark Wade, and Jep Hostetler (The Redcoats) for all their hard work and dedication to running a smooth convention. The "Spirit of MAGI-FEST" award went to a wonderful man, who has attended nearly 60 MAGI-FESTS, Mr. Bob Fillips from Struthers, Ohio. Contest winners were as follows: Jr. Close-Up First - Zach Roybal Second - Graham Fishman Third - Chris Yantek Sr. Close-Up First - John Born Second - Don Swekowski Third - Fr. Mark Davis Jr. Stage First - Graham Fishman Second - Christian Compton Third - Neil Croswell Sr. Stage First - David Kaplin Second - Tim Kutch Third - Fr. Mark Davis A huge thanks to all who support the MAGI-FEST through their faithful registration. Jep Hostetler -------------------------------------------- 11. The Amazing Orchante Saga ----------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) Page 87 TO give you a good example, the Christchurch town hall auditorium has a capacity of 5000 plus. If you look at the itinerary - Wednesday the 22nd, we did four shows, two in the morning and two in the afternoon. THAT IS OVER 20,000 PEOPLE, IN ONE-DAY! Now I have photographs taken many years ago of the FRANQUIN HYPNOTISM SHOW, which shows people queuing around the block hoping to buy tickets for his shows - that were already sold out! It is something rather difficult to comprehend until you see it with your own eyes. That's how it was with the Skippy show - no matter where we went, the 'HOUSE FULL' sign would go up - WITH QUEUES STRETCHING AROUND THE BLOCK FOR EACH AND EVERY SHOW - FOUR OR MORE SHOWS A DAY! As you can see from the itinerary, we were in Nelson on Thursday the 23rd, which should have been the last show, but we went back to Christchurch and did another four shows at the James Hay Theatre, and once again, ALL FOUR SHOWS WERE TOTALLY SOLD OUT. AMAZING! Personally, I think the show should have been renamed the 'CRUNCHY THE CLOWN and ORCHANTÉ' SHOW. Why? Because 'Skippy' couldn't do a blind thing! The first half of the show was Peter Newberry and myself doing OUR thing and the second half was a simple question and answer programme from the audience to Phil Bowers (an Australian park ranger who had come over as Skippy's keeper), about Skippy the kangaroo and information about kangaroos in general. WHAT AN ABSOLUTE RIP-OFF! The kids were expecting Skippy to at least perform some tricks, as they had seen her apparently do, on television. In actual fact, kangaroos are as thick as two planks! While I'm the subject of rip-offs, for the EXTRA EIGHT SHOWS, we got paid - wait for it, - $50! Never in my life, before or since, have I ever met such a mean, tight-fisted bastard! Needless to say I refused, never did work for that total - ~~##**^*- promoter again! In the space of seven working days, he cleared, after tax and expenses, well over $20,000 plus. Fair pay/bonuses are not in his vocabulary! With that sort of attitude, it's no wonder the 'arsehole' went 'bust' and took off for Australia! THE SKIPPY TOUR BROKE EVERY BOX OFFICE RECORD IN NEW ZEALAND'S SHOW BUSINESS HISTORY! NOT EVEN 'FRANQUIN' OR 'THE BEATLES' COULD MATCH IT. I CALLED IT 'THE SEVEN-DAY WONDER'! In New Zealand during the late Sixties and Seventies, ' Crunchy the Clown' (Peter Newberry) was almost of SUPERSTAR STATUS as far as the kids were concerned, with his own television show and quite naturally, Peter capitalised on this, during the Skippy tour. He had hundreds of photographs of himself, as Crunchy the Clown of course, on which he would sign his autograph and give away to kids after shows. The 'FANTA' drinks company, who were his sponsors, paid for them. The bottom quarter of the photograph was taken up, quite logically, by the 'FANTA' logo. Great publicity for both parties. After signing a few hundred copies of these during the first few shows of the 'Skippy' tour, Peter hit on a 'great idea'. He cut the 'FANTA' logo off, pre-autographed every one that he had then, instead of giving them away as he was supposed to, he sold them, the cheeky bugger, for 10˘ each, after every show! I bet 'FANTA' WOULD NOT have been too pleased had they are known about this (more than likely, he'd have lost their sponsorship), especially when he phoned them in Auckland requesting thousands more, and that it was of the utmost urgency! They arrived at one of the theatres within days. Imagine 'Crunchy the Clown', either in the theatre foyer or outside on the footpath, with thousands of excited kids milling around after a show. There were so many kids happy to pay 10˘ a pop for a photograph that Peter couldn't cope, so he roped Veronica (my wife and assistant) in, to sell them as well - for a commission per 100 sold! There was one incident that upset Veronica terribly at the time. A little boy around two years of age, dressed in a 'bunny' outfit, approached 'Crunchy'. Timidly holding up a one cent -piece for a photograph - Peter told him that, 'they cost 10˘ each', then sent to him away! (The McDonald syndrome / greed must have rubbed off) Peter lost a lot of Veronica's respect, and mine after that. God knows how many thousands of - HIS FREE, autographed photographs he sold by the end of the tour; he probably made more money from the sales of them, than his actual fee! The only thing that was memorable about 'Skippy, the Bush kangaroo', as far as we were concerned, was that when she defecated, the stink was unbelievable; it hung around forever and seemed to stick to everything! Five or six months after the 'Skippy' run, we were touring the South Island on a different show, and arrived once again at the Dunedin town hall. The Awful, unmistakable 'Heavy Aroma' of - 'Skippy Crap' was pervading the air back stage! Oh, such 'SWEET' memories! (I'm fairly certain think that the 'FANTA' brand is owned by 'COCA COLA') ---------------- 13.
