From Magician To Speaker Part Two -------------------------------------------- Message Quentin Reynolds Over the next few weeks I will take you through the basic details of getting into professional speaking. We'll cover the different types of speaker and the variety of venues where you would present. First, I think it would be helpful to give you some background on how I started in speaking. It will at least give you one possible way to get started. I started performing magic for money back in 1972. Every penny earned from then until into the 1990s came from performing magic shows. In 1989 I listened to a tape set by American motivational speaker Zig Ziglar and thought, "I'd like to do that." A few years later, a neighbour and I were talking about following your intuition, something I've always done. She was very interested and asked if I'd come and talk about intuition to the local Ladies Club, where she was secretary. They met from 7.30 to 9.30pm with a coffee break in the middle. At the time I specialised in children's entertainment but was putting together a mentalism act. So this sounded like the perfect opportunity to try out speaking and mentalism in front of a tame audience. When you're a working pro adding new material to a polished act can be a worry. Putting on ninety minutes of new material is terrifying. My plan was to talk on intuition for 45 minutes, break for coffee and then do 45 minutes of mentalism. Fortunately the evening went well and the ladies were delighted. They also recommended me to other clubs so a trickle of bookings started to come in. At each evening I'd mingle with the ladies and many of them would have interesting comments and questions. I started keeping notes of these and incorporating the information into my main talk. Eventually these notes became a book "INTUITION, Your Secret Power" which was published in 2000. In the mid 1990s I developed another presentation for schools, teaching the pupils basic memory systems. It always occurred to me that schools have children from the age of four and spend the next twelve to fourteen years stuffing their brains with information without ever showing why this information is relevant or giving them a system to remember it. If I were a teacher I'd spend the first few weeks of the school year selling the pupils on the benefits of my subject. Next week we'll cover what kind of topic you might choose and how you become an expert on that subject. © Quentin Reynolds. Quentin Reynolds works as both magician and speaker. Mid Year Board Meeting Of The IBM -------------------------------------------- Message from Tony Wilson (NZ) IBM International Past President 2004-2005 I have just returned from Kansas City attending the Mid Year Board Meeting of the IBM and preceding that, the Board Teambuilding Retreat led by Kent Cummins and Gus Davis from Texas. Over 30 IBM Board Members and Past Presidents assembled on January 19th to commence the teambuilding exercise that continued through January 20th before the Board Meeting on the 21st. I thoroughly enjoyed and valued the active (and passive) content of what Kent and Gus facilitated and personally identified with the amount of preparation that had gone into this retreat in assisting us with team building skills and setting goals in making decisions for our 12,000 members in 73 countries around the world. We were then able to apply some of the new skills and understanding with our 9 hour Board meeting the following day. Thank you President Roger Miller for developing the concept and organising this for the IBM. I have summarized some of the outcomes from the IBM Board Meeting which I think will be of interest to both IBM Members and prospective members as they are implemented over the next few months. The use of "Teach a Trick' on line for our members by numerous well known magicians was approved. Valid membership of the IBM will be necessary to gain access for this service. A free web site service for IBM members and the ability to create your own web site was also approved. We have also approved a new financial incentive to entice and retain new members and this will be released in due course. The Board agreed on setting a goal of increasing our net membership by at least 3% a year over the next 5 years and plan to create a new membership brochure and pins (lapel badges) for our youth members. The Linking Ring will shortly be completely printed on glossy paper to enhance some of the recent changes. Past President Bill Spooner presented an Endowment Fund proposal to upgrade the CD ROM Linking Ring program by making it available on-line. The Ring Reports would also be searchable and it would include all issues of the Linking Ring from the current volume to number one. The on-line demonstration was a stimulating "high' to complete my one week sojourn from New Zealand to Kansas City. Isn't today's technology wonderful? Looking forward to meeting many of Magic New Zealand's subscribers at our next IBM Convention in Miami Florida June 27th to July 1st. Check out our IBM webpage on www.magician.org -------------------------------------------- 6. Cross-Marketing - Steve Pradell -------------------------------------------- Message from Steve Pradell (Alaska) For those magicians who are not full time professionals who have dedicated all of their working hours to performing magic, there are many opportunities to turn your love of magic into ways to become more successful in your primary money making venture. This applies whether or not you are self employed or working as an employee in a business. As the owner of both a law firm and an entertainment business, I've used skills learned through prestidigitation to further my professional advancement and enhance the bottom line. In taking the plunge from working in one of Alaska's largest law firms to becoming a solo practitioner, I had no training as a lawyer in running my own business. Many of my associates were afraid to leave the firm and venture out on their own due to this lack of experience. However, in operating an entertainment business, I had already honed many important skills. For example, I knew how to effectively use the yellow pages, market myself, obtain free publicity through the media, create business cards, brochures and other advertising to spread the word, and how to keep track of payments and expenses for tax purposes. Most importantly, I knew how to sell myself and to be confident in my own ability to provide services as promised, which is the hallmark of salesmanship in all businesses. Moreover, being known in my community as a magician had another great advantage: I stood out from my competition. I was the "lawyer-magician" and people in both of my businesses had often seen me somewhere. Being a magician softened the negative publicity that often accompanies lawyers. Performing annually for the local bar association allowed other lawyers and judges to see me in perhaps a new light, not as only an adversary but as a real person capable of giving back to the community and entertaining their own children. The skills learned through entertaining audiences easily cross over into other areas: public speaking, thinking on your feet, learning how to quickly adapt to situations where things don't go as planned, looking people in the eye and exuding confidence, always appearing positive even if you're not feeling well. And it works both ways. Your "day job" can get you more business as a magician if you can figure out a way to get the word out. And, once in a while, using a trick or two to get your point across in business situations can cause an employer, customer or a full boardroom (bored-room) to wake up and pay attention to your pitch. You can establish your own reputation through your knowledge of magic. Finally, the media machine is always looking for a "hook," i.e. an angle from which to cover a story. Attorney by day, magician by night is such a hook. You can adapt this into your own situation. In one of my earlier articles I was pictured with briefcase in one hand, prop in the other, whiteface covering one half of my face, etc. Communication is the key to success. So, if you're looking for more business, either as a magician or in your "day job," get out there and sell yourself with your unique talents. You and your accountant will notice the difference at the end of the year! -------------------------------------------- 7. The History Of Hula Hoops In Circus Query -------------------------------------------- Message from Judith Lanigan (Aust) I am an Australian circus artist writing a book ' The Hula Hoop' including its history technique, the great artistes, world records etc I am interested in establishing when the hula hoop was first used in circus. For example I have been told by a circus director he was shown a photo dated 1892 of hula hoops in a possibly German circus. I have also been informed that hula hoops was first used in Russian circus in the 60s. My theory is that it arrived in circus with the first oriental acts. Another theory is that it was developed from the juggling acts like Bob Bramson and Lottie Brunn. I am wondering if your readers have any information, no matter how insignificant or obvious it may seem to them. Any information is helpful in tracking the progress, development and true history of the hoop. Most people just believe the version of the story put out by 'Whammo' that they 'invented' the hula hoop, but I believe that this is not true. I believe that it existed in Variety or circus long before that. I am in Australia. The book is very nearly ready for publication it's just this last stage of research. My email address is the best point of contact judithlanigan@hotmail.com I would appreciate your help very much my highest regards Judith Lanigan writer, circus comedienne, hula hoopist, clown Australia -------------------------------------------- 9. Snap Transposition - Greg Chapman -------------------------------------------- Message from Greg Chapman (NZ) The following transposition can be used exactly as described on its own, or it could be incorporated into a longer multi-phase routine such as Doc. Daleys Last Trick. Four kings are removed from a deck of cards and the two Red Kings are dealt face up onto the hand of a participant. They are then turned face down and one of them is taken and inserted face up between the face down Black Kings held by the performer. The three cards are spread to show the Red King sandwiched. In a snap all the cards instantly change places. That is, the Red Kings are now seen to sandwich a Black King and the face down card on the participants hand is shown to be the other Black King. This is a simple transposition effect that has a strong impact. Begin by removing the four kings and arrange them in coloured pairs. Take a pair in each hand face up and display them as you ask your participant which pair they prefer. Whichever pair they say, bring the cards together with the chosen coloured pair on top. Using your empty hand, gesture for them to hold out their hand palm up. This provides a reason for bringing the two pairs together without appearing as though they were gathered in any particular order. Suppose the two red kings at the face (on top). They are apparently dealt onto your participants hand and turned face down, when in reality you perform the first half of the Elmsley count. That is, the first (KH) card is peeled off, then the second (KD) and third (KS) cards are pushed off as one, as the first card (KH) is secretly taken back under the last card (KC). The two packets must remain aligned throughout this count. Turn the two squared red king's face down as you place them on their hand. It now appears that there are two red kings face down on the participants hand and the two face up black kings are squared in your hand. The "black pair" is turned face down and spread slightly (this enhances the illusion that both black cards have been shown) and the bottom card is taken from the participants packet and inserted face up between the two "black" cards which remain spread as you casually remind the viewers of the positions of the paired colours. It should appear now that two (facedown) black kings sandwich a face up red king and the other red king is isolated on their hand (face down). The visual picture and the simplicity of handling up until this point should make the following instant transposition quite startling. Simply perform Ben Harris' Fandango* move with the spread three cards in your hand. The sandwiched red king is seen to change into a black king. Immediately turn over the card on their hand to reveal that it has also changed into a black king, then show the two red kings in your hand. In an instant, all four cards appear to have changed places. *The Fandango move is a visual switch of the centre and bottom cards of a three card fan/spread. The bottom and top cards are face down and the centre card is face up. Both of the cards flip together but because the bottom card appears to remain face down it seems that only the centre card changes. David Acer also performs a move that achieves the same basic effect. He calls it Flipswitch. ----------------- 18. The Amazing Orchante Saga ----------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) Page 84 Trials and tribulations How far would YOU GO to 'Prove' a 'Magic' Point? Admittedly, what I'm about to relate is rather extreme; some will probably think/say that I take things just a little too far but, that's me! Again admittedly, the circumstances and company have to be just right. It involves the old - perhaps I should say ancient effect where you apparently stub out a lit cigarette into a handkerchief, which then vanishes leaving the handkerchief totally unharmed. I last performed this little miracle at my neighbour's home this New Year's Eve. They had only just put up some brand new, rather expensive curtains. A lit full-length, smoking like a train, King-Sized cigarette, 'vanished' within its folds! I have performed in some magnificent homes with, as you can imagine, the most exquisite and valuable of furnishings, and I must admit that I get a real kick from dropping king-size cigarettes (they are highly visible - more than half the length sticks out), with large volumes of smoke pouring out, into full-length drapes that must have cost a small fortune! The 'Lady' of the home is on the point of fainting; you can sense that her husband, surrounded by his friends, is seething, and you know that if something goes wrong they will, 'kick your head in'! I still have my head and, they usually proclaim that they are indeed, 'In the presence of a 'Real Magician' - Ha! The last time I used the traditional handkerchief, was probably when I still a teenager. As far back as I can remember, I've always utilized curtains, Gentlemen's Jackets or, down on my hands and knees, a lady's dress/frock, and very expensive wedding and ball gowns. I HAVE LIVED MY LIFE RATHER DANGEROUSLY! Depending on the Lady, I would vanish cigarettes just a little bit up from at the hem however, 99 % of the time it was a lot higher than that, and I have never received a slap or a black eye. Just shows that magic, when performed without smuttiness, but with sophistication, overrides anything! Dropping a burning cigarette into the middle of a lady's dress does tend to create strong psychological impressions of IMPENDING DISASTER, coupled with HIGHLY VISIBLE DAMAGE! Same with a man's coat -'smack dab right in the middle of the outside back'. I've digressed for two whole paragraphs! Getting back to 'Proving?' a 'Magical Point', I can't remember the first time, but the third and last time this happened was around 1986/87, approximately 3a.m. in the morning, in the lounge bar of a very posh, five star hotel in Edinburgh, Scotland. The multi-millionaire owner (he drove a Maserati - with a Lamborghini in the garage) and three of his friends (one of whom was a good friend of mine), all very well dressed businessmen, were the only ones present - apart from me of course. It had been a long night, dining, drinking and performing close-up magic and drinking and.. John says to me, "Tom, show them that cigarette thing". So I borrowed a jacket and cigarette number one 'vanished'. "He must have put it in his coat pocket" some body said, "Take your coat off and do It Again". I removed my jacket and under intense scrutiny, cigarette number two vanished! "Where the hell has it gone" was the cry, "Take your shirt off and do it again"! I complied. Bare-chested, I again made a small hollow in the borrowed jacket then dropped a freshly lit, King-Size cigarette into the hollow, took two or three puffs so that the smoke came pouring out. With three-quarters of cigarette still showing, I slowly stub it out. Cigarette number three disappeared. Several unprintable expletives in 'broad Scots' rang out (not that they're unprintable, I don't want to offend any one - well not too much). "you're putting them somewhere; drop your trousers Kiwi Laddie"! So, there I was, wearing nothing except my underpants, shoes and socks. Not a pretty sight - to some. Cigarette number 4 departed, as if it had never existed! Gob smacked, my audience of four came to the same conclusion as to where the cigarettes could be going! "You're shoving them up your arse!" "Bollocks" I said. "That's about size of it," they yelled, "Drop your grungy undies Laddie, and take off your shoes and socks while you're about it"! NOW STARK NAKED, I took cigarette number five, apparently inserted it up my nose and pulled it out from my mouth, then pushed it into my ear and reproduced it, apparently from my rear end. That got a laugh. Lighting up the cigarette (someone muttered that: 'It must taste like crap'), I took a couple puffs then, dropped it into the coat. They stared in disbelief as once again, I again seemingly stubbed it out of existence! You will just have to wait till next week to read the thrilling conclusion. ---------------- 19.
