Editors Message ------------------- Message from Alan Watson - The Magic One Broken Wand - Ormond McGill Message from Dennis Loomis A legend is gone. This morning, Wednesday, October 19, 2005, Ormond McGill left us. He had what has to be one of the longest performing careers in Show Business; spanning 7 decades of performing Hypnosis, Mentalism and Magic. Ormond toured many parts of the world with his exciting stage shows: East Indian Miracles, The Séance of Wonders, Real Mental Magic, South Sea Island Magic, The Concert of Hypnotism and others. He has been called the Dean of Stage Hypnotists, but he was also recognized as one of the world's authorities on Hypnotherapy. He was on the Board of Advisors of the American Council of Hypnotic Examiners, and taught classes and gave seminars as part of the Hypnotherapy Training Institute. While engaging as a full time performer, he found time to write 21 books, including the Encyclopedia of Stage Hypnotism, Secrets of Stage Mindreading, Seeing the Unseen, Grieve No More Beloved, and The Amazing Life of Ormond McGill. Most magicians and mentalists are unaware that he was also a naturalist of prominence. His contributions in entomology and conchology are well known in those fields. Perhaps what most of us that knew him will remember is that he was the most loveable and kindhearted of souls. On stage, he ingratiated himself with his audiences and they went home knowing that they had been in the presence of a kind and true gentleman. All who knew him share the feeling that the world has been diminished today. From Bart Whaley's Who's Who In Magic.... McGill, Ormond (Dale) (Palo Alto, California: 15 Jun 1913- ) Inspired & learned as a pre-teen from a Gilbert Mysto Magic set then at age 14-15 from the Tarbell Course. Pro since 1940 as stage hypnotist (as "Dr. Zomb" 1941-53), mentalist, illusionist. Toured a midnight spook show thru western USA & Canada c1942-52. Toured the Pacific Basin in 1955. Wrote 21 Gems of Magic (1946, 63pp), The Encyclopedia of Stage Hypnotism (1947, 275pp), Psychic Magic (1951, six 25-page vols), Atomic Magic (1951, 41pp), The Mysticism and Magic of India (1977), Entertaining with Magic (1977, 231pp), Magic with Soap Bubbles (1987), Real Mental Magic (1989, 143pp), etc. Articles in Fate & New Journal of Hypnotism. His bio is forthcoming (1990) from Chuck Mignosa. (Bo#228;Fu;Tay;Wh2) --------------------- Remember if you have any magic news drop me a line: AW@Alan-Watson.com ----------------- 2. Criss Angel - 2005 Magician Of The Year ----------------- Message from Bruce Cervon (US) The Academy of Magical Arts, Inc. at Hollywood's Historic Magic Castle Names Criss Angel, Creator and Star of A&E Network's "CRISS ANGEL MINDFREAK," 2005 Magician of the Year Hollywood, CA (October 13, 2005) Criss Angel, creator and star of the A&E Network's #1 television series, "CRISS ANGEL MINDFREAK," has been named 2005 Magician of the Year by The Academy of Magical Arts (AMA), Inc. at Hollywood's historic Magic Castle, known throughout the world as the Mecca of Magic. The official announcement was made last night by Bruce Cervon, Chief Magical Officer (CMO) of the AMA's Board of Trustees, at a press conference held at the Magic Castle, where Milt Larsen, Co-Founder of the Magic Castle, also announced that Criss Angel will make his first appearance ever in the 49th edition of "It's Magic!," featuring the greatest magicians in the world, to be held at the Ricardo Montalb Theatre in Hollywood on October 29 and 30, 2005. A day later, on October 31st, a special Halloween edition of CRISS ANGEL MIDFREAK will air at 10 PM/9C on A&E, part of which was filmed on location at the Magic Castle. Criss Angel will officially have the award of 2005 Magician of the Year bestowed upon him on Saturday, April 1, 2006, at the 38th Annual Academy of Magical Arts Awards (AMA) Show & Banquet, a black tie, red carpet gala, scheduled to be held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, CA. The distinction of being named Magician of the Year by the AMA is to a magician, what winning an Academy Award is to an actor. Angel was at the Magic Castle last night for a Viewing Party and press conference to talk with the press about the filming of an episode of "CRISS ANGEL MINDFREAK," entitled Prediction, which was shot on location at the Magic Castle, and aired nationwide on the evening of Wednesday, October 12, 2005. The episode finds Angel taking a tour through the history of magic, by touring the Magic Castle in Hollywood. During the course of the tour in the episode, Angel and his team view rarely seen Houdini artifacts and a private séance room. Then, on the Dicky Barrett morning radio show on 103.1 in Los Angeles, Angel attempts to predict a major news event as well as the lottery. During the course of the evening, the news of Angel's 2005 Magician of the Year Award was announced. Angel said: I never set out to create art for awards, but I must admit its incredibility gratifying to be recognized by your peers and especially the most prestigious magic organization, The Academy of Magical Arts. Bruce Cervon, CMO of the AMA's Board of Trustees, said: Criss Angel has brought the art of magic into the twenty-first century. This means that many average Americans are following the escapades of the "MINDFREAK" without realizing that they are watching a magician. Criss truly deserves the 2005 Academy of Magical Arts Magician of the Year Award. He has been seen by far more of the public than any other prestidigitator during the year, and he is a fine performer. Milt Larsen, co-founder of the Magic Castle, said: Criss is presenting a new and different form of magic. He's definitely bringing it into the future and I can't think of anybody who's doing it better. Irene Larsen, also a co-founder of the Magic Castle, said: Criss Angel has elevated the art of magic to new heights. By virtue of his highly successful weekly television series, "CRISS ANGEL MINDFREAK," he is bringing the fun and wonder of magic to a whole new younger generation. Dale R. Hindman, president of the AMA, said: We believe the Academy's Trustees have made an outstanding choice for Magician of the Year. Criss is certainly cutting edge and has brought focus back to magic on television in new ways. Gay Blackstone, vice president of the AMA, magician and wife of the late legendary, Harry Blackstone, Jr., said: I think Criss Angel's new title as Magician of the Year 05 from The Academy of Magical Arts is wonderful and deserving. He has achieved recognition in multiple media, and I am delighted that he has been selected to receive our highest honor for his accomplishments. In attendance at last night's press conference were: Criss Angel, creator and star of A&E Network's #1 television show, "CRISS ANGEL MINDFREAK", Milt Larsen, Co-Founder of the Magic Castle and Member of The Academy of Magical Arts, Inc.; Irene Larsen, Co-Founder of the Magic Castle, Honorary President for Life and Ambassador-At-Large for The Academy of Magical Arts, Inc. and Member of The Academy of Magical Arts, Inc. Angel performed nearly 600 shows before completing his extended engagement on January 6, 2003. In October 2002, Angel debuted his first-ever hour-long television special, "CRISS ANGEL MINDFREAK," on the ABC Family Channel. A subsequent two-hour television special aired on TBS in Japan on October 4, 2003. Angel's third one-hour television special, Supernatural, aired on the Sci-Fi Channel on Halloween night, October 31, 2003. He is one of the select few magicians to ever almost simultaneously appear on both covers of the magic trade magazines, MAGIC Magazine (October 2003) and Genii Magazine (December 2003).?In 2004 and 2005, Angel created and designed much of the visual effects for the $105 million production of Le Reve, the show created and directed by Franco Dragone for Steve Wynn's new $2.6 billion casino resort named, Wynn, which opened in Las Vegas in April of 2005. On July 20, 2005, "CRISS ANGEL MINDFREAK," premiered on the A&E Network as the first weekly magic series on television in 40 years. In the first two weeks alone, the unprecedented "CRISS ANGEL MINDFREAK," captivated 1.7 million television viewers, with a median age of 28.5, significantly below A&E's usual age of 49. The show's mind-blowing demonstrations include the episodes, Burned Alive, Bullet Catch (which has Angel catching a bullet in a cup held in his mouth) and Body Suspension (featuring Angel suspended from a helicopter by four fish hooks through his skin while being flown over the Nevada desert). Criss Angel will make his first guest artist appearance in It's Magic! 2005, a show that has been delighting magic enthusiasts for over four decades, since its inception in 1956. This dazzling and enchanting live stage show is unique in that it features top professional magicians from all over the world, with each act carefully selected to represent the variety of the art of magic. On one stage audience members will see internationally recognized and award-winning magicians, direct from main show rooms around the world, Las Vegas and Hollywood's Magic Castle, performing sleight of hand, large stage illusions and comedy. Two Rare Books For Sale ----------------- Message from Peter Young Forwarded on by Peter scarlet (UK) We are long-established rare book dealers in the UK. Some months ago we purchased a small library in Eastern France which contained two books on magic. Odd in a way as the remaining one thousand or so books were French literature. We have never in forty years had serious dealings with books on the subject, hence contacting the Magic Circle. The two books are for sale and are detailed in the accompanying attachment and rather than have them end their days in a institutional library I thought an approach to The Magic Circle might find a collector member interested in their purchase. The books are destined for inclusion in a general rare book catalogue to be published at the year-end. Interested members may like to contact me directly by e-mail or by phone on 00 33 3 29 79 64 92 (until 1st November) or at our office number below after that date. Variety Artists Club Of New Zealand Awards Night ---------------------------------------------------------- Message from Guy Cater (NZ) Almost 200 members and guests of the Variety Artists Club of New Zealand gathered at the Springs Garden Restaurant on Wednesday 19th October to enjoy the Annual Awards Night. It was really an evening for musicians as the four Scrolls of Honour went to Music Promoter (and one of the original Radio Hauraki Pirates) Ian McGann, Corelli School of Music Director David Selfe, Songwriter Karen Hayston and long time Conductor and Sound Technician Neil McGough. A new award was introduced. The Unsung Hero Award, which went to Jock Hume - The Singing Cowboy. The Pat McMinn Rising Star Award went to 18 year old violin virtuoso Ben Morrison and new Kiwi Michael Barrymore took the Rielly Comedy Award. The two major awards went to Alan Pitts (extraordinary musical saw player) when he received the Agnew Award for Excellence and the ultimate award, The Benny, went to Elaine Bracey . singer, comedienne. The food was superb and the entertainment wonderful. Rock and Roll legend Tom Sharplin acted as MC and sang. Suzanne Lynch and Deryn Trainer were the first act on and sang beautifully followed by Chris Powley and Chet O'Connell with an hilariously funny spoof on so many NZ performers. Later on the Velasco Family from Thailand showed everyone why they are in such demand . fast paced, different and thoroughly enjoyable as they went through routines such as Juggling, Acrobatics, Sharp shooting with a blowgun, Contortionism and much much more. Brand new local comedian Gish shocked a few but still showed his writing talents with some very clever and funny parodies. ----------------- 7. Don Drake Invents Something New! ----------------- Message from Don Drake (US) You've got to see it in person to believe it. I've actually come up with a terrific money and time saver for all those hard working illusionists out there. If you don't beleieve me, take a look. http://blackartsecrets.com/catalog/utility_stage.html "It's hard to believe," claims Drake, "but I started out to just make a black art stage that people could adapt to different sizes, by moving the back curtain. Now look what's happened. I've aparently invented something no one has ever done, or at least not published. Somehow a miracle has snuck up on me." Drake claims that he can do almost any illusion without a base, so the poor assistant won't have to squeeze herself into a box anymore! "This is the end of those bases you have to drag around in an 18 wheeler," says Don. "Also you won't believe the quotes I'm getting" We here in Black Art land are waiting to see if Dondrake's miraculous claims actually work. According to Jim Curry and Seth Grabel at Mystical tricks.com, it does actually work, and in almost any lighting. Plus they claim it's easy to carry around, and not that expensive. Jim Curry said, "Dondrake's MWT (movintg wall technology) is the most fantastic thing I've ever seen. And it works, and seems to keep on working" Story by Brother Art Black from Shadowland U.S.A. 30 I'll see you at the World Magic Seminar February 19-22 http://worldmagicseminar.com ----------------- 9. The Amazing Orchante Saga ----------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) Page 72 Anything good in life is either illegal - immoral - or fattening! I couldn't believe it! Never in all the years, before or since, during the untold thousands of times in which I have produced my thimble, have I received such a 'violent' reaction - I were, quite literally, gobsmacked! Muttering apologies for what, I really didn't know, I snuck off to my room and waited for the management, police, fire brigade, SAS, riot squad, army, and ambulance to come hammering on my door. They didn't, of course! The hotel lounge room was packed for the first night show; it went down a storm! Assisting me was my girl - friend, Sally Phillips (now Metzger). Please note the hyphen. Perhaps I had better explain. Sally is my friend - my buddy, has been for the best part of 30 years - she is also most definitely a lady, all woman, and a beautiful one at that! I trust that clears the air, we don't want any nasty rumours starting up now, do we! In actual fact, back in the Sixties, Sally occasionally worked as an 'Emergency' assistant for one or two other artists/magicians when the need arose and, she kept each one's trade secrets - a lady to be trusted and very professional to boot! Luv ya sally! After the stage show I cleaned up - showered, then headed for the private bar where I spent the rest of the evening, performing - 'the show after the show' - close-up magic at the bar, until two or three in the morning. This was my custom, night after night and word soon got around. Unofficial guests starting to find their way in and the hotel staff were also there for the fun, except a certain Redhead (with a great right hand). She would perch herself on a bar-stool, with a girlfriend beside her, at the other end of the bar, as far away from me as she possibly could, while I was, 'creating magical miracles'- oh, the insult! Every time I caught her eye, 'icy daggers' flew in my direction. Once, I went up to her to try and clear the air but to no avail - I was told no uncertain terms, that has far she was concerned, I was -"rude, crude and - totally unattractive". One night, about 20 or 30 businessmen, who were staying in the hotel, had crammed themselves into the private bar (they were from all over New Zealand, and were in Auckland for some sort of convention.) They had seen the show in the main lounge and somebody had told them about my 'magic session' that followed later. Somehow, the subject of hypnotism came up and before you knew it, I was presenting a fully-fledged hypnotic 'stage show' in the bar!!! With several of the businessmen as my willing subjects, I set up a gangster scenario, convinced one that he was - Al Capone and that the rest were all members of his gang. From there on I didn't have to do much, they all interacted with each other with ' Al Capone' setting up a plan to rob a bank and giving various members of his 'gang' jobs to do - in between grabbing some body by the front of their shirt and demanding that they clean his spats! It was a hoot! Turns out that my 'al Capone' was actually a jeweller who came from a small town - Morrinsville or Te Aroha- somewhere like that. (There's a follow- up about him - I'll tell you later) Eventually, at 2 am, the bar manager had to close the bar. One of the businessmen suggested that we transfer the entire 'party' to his suite and carry on, which we did. At this juncture I must explain that where hypnotism shows are concerned, I am dead against using blue or filthy material - public shows should be clean wholesome fun for the whole family, end of story! Sure, I like my dirty jokes and blue movies as much as the next guy, but that is private, not public. Yes, it's OK to have a bit of fun with a close personal friend whom you have 'Put Under' Hypnosis, but never at their personal expense, monetary or otherwise! Anyhow, the suite was packed with very happy and very inebriated, myself included - males, and only males. The hypnotic Show continued. Now, it was private. I've suggested to one of the subjects that the most beautiful blonde in the world was lying naked on the bed and as far as she was concerned, he was the only man on the world, for her. I'll leave the rest to your imagination. Suddenly, I became aware that the redhead, who didn't like thimbles, who thought I was rude crude and totally unattractive, had entered the room. I was so embarrassed - I put an immediate halt to the proceedings, went up to her and, practically on bended knees, begged her forgiveness - explaining that I had no idea there was a woman in the room, that what she had just witnessed, was the result of a bunch of very happily inebriated men, at an all-male party, having an over-the-top good time - as we often do! ---------------- 10.
