Open letter from Rich Dooley - S.A.M. National President ----------------- Message from Richard Dooley National President Society of American Magicians S.A.M. Members - Mobilize to Help Those In Need Hurricane Katrina has affected the lives of many magicians and thousands of lay people in the Gulf Coast region.  One of the S.A.M.'s core values and beliefs is to reach out not just to magicians, but to our communities at large. The time has come to do what we can to "build bridges," both literally and figuratively, between the hearts of the S.A.M. members throughout the world and the thousands affected by this terrible disaster. We all have different means, but allow me to suggest that each member consider the following: Donate funds to the American Red Cross or Salvation Army and clearly earmark them for Hurricane Katrina victims.  For those who work in Corporate America, some companies are matching donations - my employer for example is matching $2 for each $1 an employee donates.  Check with your human resource department and see if your company has a program like this. Full time Performers may wish to consider donating a flat amount or a percentage of your show proceeds for a month. Magic Dealers could think about donating a percentage of sales for a month. For some of us it may be easier to give our time than our financial donations. Those who are close enough or who have the wherewithal to travel to a shelter housing those displaced by Katrina's wrath, should make every effort to do so.  Work with the local officials and shelters in areas supporting those affected by this natural disaster and offer to perform for the kids (and the big kids too) either with a show or by doing some walkaround magic.  Consider teaming up with other magicians to "tour" local shelters.  The gift of your time is as valuable, if not more so than financial contributions. As the true extent of the damage to those involved in magic is assessed, we may wish to consider how we can provide targeted assistance to those folks. But at this time, there are entire communities in need of the basic necessities of life. The act of giving, and the amount to give is truly a personal decision. Let's each think about what we ourselves can do and act on that thought. Why wait?  Mobilize now and share your experiences with me and other magicians so we can, on behalf of those you are helping, say "thank you." ----------------- 3. Combined SAM/IBM Event 2008 Update ----------------- Message from George Schindler - Dean - American of Society Magicians Dear Friends of Magic Around the World, Many people have expressed concern about the City of New Orleans and the many magicians and friends that live there. It is a natural thing that we have also received inquiries about the impact hurricane Katrina will have on the Joint IBM/SAM Contest Convention planned for 2008. At this time is too early to estimate the extent of structural damage and health issues and their impact on rebuilding, and communication with our convention/hotel/theater contacts in the city still is not established. The devastation of hurricane Katrina has been horrific and while we are confident that New Orleans will return to be a vibrant and exciting city, it remains to be seen whether or not all the necessary clean up and rebuilding will be completed in time for our convention in 2008. Postponement to a later year is not a feasible option. For these and other reasons, the Organizing Committee for a Joint 2008 IBM/SAM Convention has already begun the process of identifying other possible venues. Everyone should understand that there are a number of parameters that make the 2008 convention different from other joint efforts held in the past and we need these elements to come together in order for this to be the very special event that we have envisioned. It is the Committee´s view that it will take approximately two months to complete our work and a final decision will be made at that time. Any change in the venue or financial model would require the approval of the boards of both organizations. Hopefully we will have better news from New Orleans in the coming days. For the Joint IBM/SAM 2008 Organizing Committee, Brad Jacobs, Roger Miller, Hank Moorehouse, Obie O´Brien, Joan Caesar, Andy Dallas ----------------- 4. He's 100%magician and 100% comedian. The two aspects of his character simultaneously feed and devour each other to produce a riotously entertaining street act that would burst Merlin of Camelot's eyeballs and the spleen of insult comedian Don ickles."  --  Ed Parrish, Magic Magazine PAUL GREEN is a working close-up magician. From private parties for the Hollywood elite; Beverly Hills restaurants; to Trade Shows for Fortune 500 companies, he has done it all! For over 30 years, Paul has been a regular performer at the Magic Castle. He has appeared at conventions from Las Vegas to Australia. He specializes in making magic memorable for audiences in the real world. Does Paul have the experience? You bet he does! Paul Green was awarded the Lecturer of the Year Award from the Academy of Magical Arts at the Magic Castle in 2002. His DVD on the Classic Force is "the" essential learning tool for gaining the skill for this devastating sleight-of-hand tool. His DVD, In the Trenches, has been touted around the world as being filled with some of the strongest magic available. Paul is one of magic's great teachers, and you will be adding his material to your own personal repertoire. Above all, Paul Green is a friendly and approachable guy. He loves talking about magic with everyone. This is your chance to meet him and learn from him. LONNIE CHEVRIE can draw a standing ovation from a crowded room with the snap of his fingers. With a seemingly simple flick of the wrist, he can astonish an adult or delight a child. Sound like magic? It is. A two-time winner of the Texas Association of Magicians Best Close-up Magic award, Lonnie Chevrie is West Texas foremost magician and sleight-of-hand artist. Today, Lonnie's talents seem to extend beyond the conventional boundaries of magic. His digital dexterity allows him to defy the laws of physics, whether he's working with coins, a deck of cards, or creating a sleight-of-hand illusion with ordinary everyday objects. Because of his magical skill and charismatic personality, neither of which is an illusion, the award-winning magician enjoys a strong following. His popularity keeps him busy performing regularly. Watching Lonnie perform his special brand of close-up magic can be mind-boggling. Now it's your turn to witness the sleight-of-hand magic of this soft-spoken gentleman with the engaging smile. Experience the skill and magical talents of LONNIE CHEVRIE. You will be amazed! NATHAN KRANZO is a full time magician from Flushing, Michigan. His main focus is close up magic. Nathan studied Industrial Design, Special Effects, and Movie Making at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. Besides performing for real people, Nathan is also highly sought after by magicians as a lecturer. He has performed and lectured all over the United States and Europe. His original performance material has been published in national and worldwide publications, such as Genii Magazine, Magic Magazine, The Penumbra, Channel One, Half Baked, and The Linking Ring. Nate is part of The Next Generation of Magic. He thinks "outside the box." This is exemplified by his amazing work with everything from cards and coins to breath mints and tan lines. Let Nathan teach you how to think "outside the box" and have fun doing it. Some of the dealers signed up already include: Hank Moorehouse, Mint Magic, Gordon Miller, The Magic Shop, Bob King Magic, and more to be announced later. John Luka Motor City Close-Up Convention # 9 http://hometown.aol.com/johnlukamagic/convention.html ----------------- 10. A Dice Stacking Retrospective, Part 7 ----------------- Message from Tony L. Lewis (US) Learning How to stack dice. #7 in the dice stacking series. Hi fellow magic enthusiasts, , At the end of the previous article in this series, I described how I bought "Senator" Crandall's booklet entitled "How to Stack Dice for Fun and No profit" at Magic, Inc. in Chicago. At the same time I also purchased all the dice stacking equipment necessary for performing the magic routine described in the manual. *   *   * Now it was me, the Crandall booklet, a dice cup and four dice (plus a spare) all alone, sitting at my kitchen table and attempting to learn how to stack dice. Please note that the Crandall booklet was a good teaching device for its time, but when I compare its clarity to that of Todd Strong's "The Dice Stacking Book" I cry real tears. Crandall's booklet contains a humorous description of dice stacking accompanied by a set of decent line drawings. On the other hand, Todd's book contains precise step by step instructions along with an abundant number of clear photographs showing each stage of numerous different dice stacking moves. IBM Ring 2100 president, David Van Vranken tells me that he could not learn how to stack dice from Crandall's book. He then bought Todd's book and was stacking dice soon thereafter. Well, for me it was Crandall's book or nothing so I spent countless hours learning the stack from it. I have been nicknamed "bulldog" for the dogged way in which I tend to pursue a challenging project. I needed every ounce of that tenacity to learn how to stack dice from the Crandall booklet. My perseverance finally paid off much, much later when I finally managed to get four dice to shakily stack up. Please keep in mind that I was learning how to stack with 5/8 inch dice that were pretty well made, but hardly equal to precision dice with their accuracy of 1/10,000 of an inch. Thanks to the hundreds of gambling casinos all over the US, precision dice are very easy to obtain today. Good casinos replace their dice after a relatively short amount of use. This is a trivial expense in crap games where tens of thousands of dollars are put into play every hour. Although these discarded dice no longer meet casino standards, they are terrific for stacking dice. Most casinos "score' their discarded dice before they sell then to the public. These scored dice stack quite well except for when the stacker is attempting to form extra high stacks. In this case the accumulated scoring on a large number of dice is an impediment. However, if a dice stacker is willing to pay a premium, virgin casino dice are available. If you want to start out stacking with the very best equipment, you can purchase a stick(5 Dice) of new precision dice for  $10.95 plus P&H. Here is a source for such dice http://www.casinocom.com/Diceonly.html. I can't remember whether I have ever patronized this dealer.  My last source for precision dice has changed its name and I find its web site very difficult to use. Kardwell International is a famous supplier of casino gaming equipment, but they want $6 or $7 for a pair of their casino dice. If you want to stay with the big name in the business go to http://www.kardwell.com/page/KII/CTGY/DICE-FLUSH-SPOTS. Kardwell is renowned for its dependable service. OK, Back to the main narrative. After I had finally learned how to stack four dice, I proceeded to tackle the variations in stacking necessary for performing the magic routine described in the Crandall booklet. After I mastered those moves, I revisited National Magic to compare notes with Johnny Polumbo, the magician who had introduced me to dice stacking. I was quite pleased and somewhat surprised to see that my dice stacking ability was now superior to Johnny's. He was quite good natured about this fact. He had just learned how to stack to add this ability to his quite sizable bag of tricks. For me dice stacking was the major achievement of my comparatively limited magic repertoire. I then made a trip to Magic, Inc. to show off my newly acquired dice stacking ability. I was complimented by several magicians there. Now that made me feel very good! I was usually the one watching other magicians demonstrate their various skills. It was a delightful novelty for me to play the role of the performer while my colleagues were the spectators. One of the magicians asked me if I knew that Clarke "The Senator" Crandall was currently tending bar at his son-in-law's tavern located on the west side of Chicago. I found this revelation to be quite exciting. I said that I would have to visit the Senator and compliment him on his book.(Remember that it was the best dice stacking book available at the time.) I was warned by the other magicians present that I was undertaking a very dicey (pun definitely intended!)  enterprise. In his personal life the Senator was very selective in whom he chose to talk to. Very frequently when one of his magic fans went out to visit him, the Senator would only mutter a few terse phases as he efficiently served the drinks. So I carefully figured out an approach that would enable me to penetrate the Senator's defenses. Next time I will let you know whether or not I was able to get the Senator to "open up." ----------------- 11. Trans-Po Bunny- Jamie-G ----------------- Message from Jamie-G (Canada) The magician shows an empty small black canister. The magician turns the canister upside down on the table. The magician reaches into his pocket and pulls out a small sponge bunny. The magician takes the small bunny with his other hand and blows on his hand. The magician than opens his hand and the bunny has vanished. The magician waves his empty hand over top of the canister. The magician has the spectator flip over the canister and they find that the bunny has appeared inside. Props: Two small sponge bunnies and one small black plastic canister, the type used to hold film. Setup: A small bunny folded in half and than folded in half again, then put in thumb pinch in the right hand. Another small sponge bunny in your right pocket. Have the canister on the table facing upwards. Method: Pick up the canister with your left hand show it empty to the spectator. Take your right pointer finger and put it in to the canister and show the spectator nothing is in there. Grab the canister from the top with your right hand and, in doing this, it is very easy to drop the thumb pinched bunny canister. Turn the canister upside down onto the table. (This is all done quickly with one hand.) Using your first two fingers of your right hand, take the other bunny from your right pocket and show it to the spectator. Do the thumb pinch vanish as described above. Go into your right pocket to grab some magic dust and ditch the thumb pinched bunny. Sprinkle the magic dust over the canister and have the spectator turn it over to see that the bunny has now appeared there. Method #2: Instead of putting the canister upside down on the table you could have the spectator put the canister in their pocket or purse and have the same outcome but get a much bigger reaction for doing this little extra step. Bunny Money Effect: The magician shows a dollar bill front to back. The magician rolls the dollar bill into a tube. The magician blows on the bill. When the magician opens the bill a small sponge bunny appears inside of the dollar bill. "That's real bunny money." Props: One dollar bill and one sponge bunny. Setup: One small sponge bunny in thumb pinch in the right hand. Method: While the bunny is in thumb pinch in the right hand, take a dollar bill that is sitting on a table and show it front and back. Hold the bill in your left hand and bring your right hand under the bill. The bill is now cover to hide the bunny. Release the bunny under the bill and roll the bill into a tight tube around the bunny. Hold the end of the bill. The sponge bunny will open the bill itself and appear from within. ---------------- 12. The Amazing Orchante Saga ----------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) Page 67 Later, after having a conversation with the crew involved on the subject of intelligence and stupidity, they decided it would be wiser to do their dynamite 'bit' well away from me. Even then, when the dynamite exploded, I could still feel the 'WHOOOMPH' but at least I knew what it was and was ready for it. While I'm on the subject of intelligence, stupidity and dynamite, here's a beaut! Although we did most of the travelling in our station wagon (we were working hotel shows in between the stunt shows), occasionally we would travel in one of the stunt cars when they had a run of shows on. One day, as we were going from some town to another, Veronica and I, sitting in the back seat, became aware of an annoying, rattling sound coming from the back shelf under the window. It was late December, which is high summer in New Zealand, and the sun was blazing straight in the back window - it was bloody hot! The rattling was driving us crackers so finally I turned around and pick up a large cardboard box that was sitting on the window shelf.  I nearly died on the spot; inside were several detonators along with some sticks of dynamite! Bloody hell, here's these things rolling around loose, cooking under a red hot sun - just waiting to explode! There is no doubt that there would have been one hell of a violent eruption if we had chosen to ignore the rattling and rolling that was emanating from the 'Thunder-Box' behind our heads, and we sure as hell wouldn't be here today! January 8th, 1972; Whakatane has finally got a local radio station and goes 'On Air', celebrating with an opening ceremony and carnival.  They had asked me to do my 'Buried Alive' as part of the afternoon entertainment.  As arranged, a tip-truck arrived with the sand, but whoever filled it must have been blind - it was damn near empty!  Oh, well, the show must go on. It was a gloriously hot summer's day as I lay down in the coffin; the lid was screwed down, and the truck tipped what sand he had over the coffin.  I suddenly realized that I hadn't taken into consideration the heat of the sun; my ten minutes of air/oxygen had been reduced to less than 2 or 3 minutes! The heat building up inside the coffin was tremendous, and I knew that I wasn't going to make it.  Within a minute or so I was gasping for air and began thumping on the lid of the coffin. With the little air that I had left, I screamed Veronica's name, over and over.  I could hear the sand being scraped from the top of the coffin, but by the time they had unscrewed the lid, the build-up of heat was so tremendous that the lid exploded into the air, as would a pressure-cooker! Sure was a very, very close call. I was extremely fortunate that the truck didn't have a full load of sand (I discovered later, there was only just enough to lightly cover the coffin). If it had been fully loaded, as it should have been, all my yelling and screaming would have been for nothing; even now, I shudder . what a horrible death it would have been. And just think of all the publicity gone to waste - I bet the news would've circled the globe!!! After the near disastrous incident in Whakatane, I was under contract to do 4 more shows with the stunt team, two in Gisborne, followed by two in Napier.  A couple of funny incidents happened while we were there. The first was when we were driving back from Hastings to Napier; the cities are only 12 miles apart - when a policeman waved us down (I was going a bit fast). As we pulled up beside him, he shone his torch up at the coffin, stared at it for a few seconds, then without a word, frantically waved us on.  WE WENT! Loved to have known what was going on in his mind... The other - we had been invited to a party after the show, somewhere between Napier and Hastings.  As we drove along the main road, we noticed that a long queue of cars had formed behind us, and nobody was overtaking us.  We finally turned off the main road to get to the party and, still the queue followed us.  Turns out they were going to the party as well, but because of the coffin on the roof rack, nobody would pass us - either through respect, or superstition! The last time performed the 'Buried Alive' act was in the beautiful city of Napier, and the last I heard of the coffin, Veronica's father had taken it to pieces and faced the cupboards of his Ferro cement motor yacht (which he built in his back yard) with it, so my coffin is now sailing somewhere on the high seas.
