My good friend and my computer guru, Chris Parkinson, has done an amazing job. I was surprised to receive a number of compliments from some of my personal magic friends and Chris hadn't even finished half the site. To find my new website go to: www.watson.co.nz I just love the new navigation design and the way Chris has maintained a matching look to the individual pages. All of the images have been updated and Chris really exceeded my expectations with an amazingly creative new graphic for the Magic New Zealand® E-zine subscription page. I liked it so much I asked him if he could design a new banner for the HTML newsflash, based on the same keyboard graphic. While he was doing that he also re-coded the template for me to include the royal heart flush background that features on my site. I would like to publicly thank Chris for his outstanding efforts. He doesn't do a bad job for a radio announcer.. I'm sure he'd be happy to do the same for any of our E-zine subscribers too. There's a link to his web site on my navigation ladder or you can e-mail him.... chris@parkinson.co.nz On a personal note: It's been two years since we lost little Tiffany, Larissa's daughter. I was not able to resolve the dilemma of how to include her in the website without appearing to seek sympathy. As a close personal friend of mine and my family, Chris produced the most thoughtful memorial page Larissa or I could have imagined. His caring, succinct words have helped the family resolve an extremely sensitive and emotional situation. Although the link to her page is not obvious, the link is on Larissa name on Melanie’s webpage. Have had a number of appreciative reports from those who have viewed it. Thanks again Chris. ------------------------------- A very special and well known magician Jimmy Yoshida from Hawaii celebrates his 85th birthday. Website Contest ----------------- Message from MikeD (US) In an effort to bring the International Brotherhood of Magician’s official website more firmly into the internet age … In order to take advantage of the exciting new technologies available to us on our new server and our increased bandwidth … We are contacting you, the webmasters of rings that have proven your talents in the previous I.B.M. Website Contest, to propose a new ‘contest’. One that we hope will take our website out of the twentieth century and launch it to infinity and beyond. Announcing the I.B.M. Webpage Design-Off Enough with the purple prose. In the past our website was viewed as more of a resource for communicating with the membership. We tried to keep things simple and straight forward so that members can find what they are looking for. There were a number of reasons for that, not the least of which was that we did not have the hardware or bandwidth to do much more than we have been doing. That has all changed. We have purchased a brand-spanking new server and connected it to the internet with a dedicated T1 line. That gives us a lot more capacity for fun and magical content. What we want to do is ‘spice’ up our website with some fun, some flash, some video and other things to take advantage of our new platform. And that is where you come in. As past entrants in the I.B.M. Website Contest, you have shown that you know how to make a website sparkle. And since we are, after all, a brotherhood, it seemed only natural to use the talents of our members. So here is what we are proposing, if you are interested. Design a page for the ‘Magician.org’ site. Make it fun, give it flash, have it sparkle and capture people’s attention. We are looking for two different categories of submissions. First is a new “home page”. This will set the tone for the rest of the site. We want to make this page exciting and fun, but we also want to be careful that we don’t make it so complicated that it takes too long to load or people still on dial-up. The second category is more open. That is for any page but the “home page”. It can be a revision of an existing page to give it more punch or appeal or it can be something totally magical and new to showcase some of our new capabilities. Decide what you want to do and drop us a line. We will keep an up to date list of who is working on what so that there is not a lot of duplication. We will have several esteemed judges who will evaluate all the submissions and ‘prizes’ will be awarded for the best implementations. Since the point of this is to improve our website, we hope to be incorporating many of the submissions into the website. The pages that we select for that honor will include an acknowledgement of your efforts and can link to your Ring’s web site. And that is not all. We have prizes! The selected home page and the best “other” page will each get a $75 gift certificate to Magic Supply (http://www.magicsupply.com). In addition, we will award an “Honorable Mention” award of an Official IBM Denim Dress Shirt (a $38.00 value). And to get you even more excited, everyone submitting a page will receive an Official I.B.M. tee-shirt! Entrants must register by April 21st and submissions must be received by May 5th. If you are up to the challenge, send email to miked@magician.org. ----------------- 5. South African Magic Championships ----------------- Message from David J. Greetings From Bonnie Scotland ----------------- Message from Jay Scott Berry I'm happy to say that magic is alive and well here in the land of Highlands and Islands. Many of you are aware of the positive response we've had over the past few years with The Palace of Magic Festival. Based upon this, Mark Fisken and I decided to establish a production company dedicated to the creation of wondrous shows and events. And so, Palace of Magic Productions was born. For more info, visit www.palaceofmagic.com In this country, of course, you can't go more than 20 miles without coming across another castle. In the past few weeks, Lisa and I have performed at St Andrews Castle, Dundas Castle, Falkland Palace and Stirling Castle. This weekend, we're presenting a special Day of Magic and Wonder at Delgatie Castle. This seems to be setting the pace for what will be a non-stop whirlwind of magic this spring and summer. Additionally, in a few weeks I'll be premiering a new lecture, entitled: Pure Magic. Astonishingly, we have over 40 dates booked across the UK, from Cornwall to Aberdeen (and mates, let me tell you..that's a lot of pubs!). And finally, later this year, I'm very happy to say that we'll be performing back Down Under. The first shows are already booked at The Clarendon Hotel in Katoomba, in the Blue Mountains, on November 11th. More shows to be announced including a special Halloween production in Bali. All for Wonder! Warning From Hard Rock Casino: NO Magicians Allowed ----------------- Message from Wayne Bernath (US) I wanted to pass along an interesting story that happened last night: Nathan Burton was playing at a $25 two-deck blackjack table at the Hard Rock Casino with some friends last night. To his surprise, the head pit boss pulled him aside and said, "Mr. Burton, unfortunately we can't let you play at this table any longer. We don't accuse you of cheating, but we do not let high profile magicians such as David Blaine or yourself play hand-held blackjack." Nathan was surprised and bemused to find himself grouped with the likes of David Blaine and only wished that they had told him when he was up several hundred dollars. ----------------- 14. Revolutionary Card To Newspaper - Jamie-G ----------------- Message from Jamie-G (Canada) Effect: Magician shows a card to the spectators. In the blink of an eye it instantly turns into a newspaper. Props: A playing card and a sheet of paper. The paper that you use has to be from a tabloid or penny saver. The paper must be as wide as a normal newspaper but not as long. I use the part of the paper that already has the middle fold in it so that when it opens and the paper drops I can very easily fold the paper in half and show both sides of it. Preparation: You have to fold your paper in a certain way so that when you pull on the corners and drop the paper it will fall instantly. Explanation Of The Fold: First your paper is folded in half. It automatically comes with the fold if you are using a complete sheet of the paper. Your card is going to be on the back of the paper in the lower left hand side. You are now going to make an accordion fold. You have to make it a little bit smaller then the width of your playing card. Have the back of your paper facing you and start the fold with the right side of the paper. On the last fold it will be a lot smaller than the rest of the folds. This is going to make the flap that you pull to turn your card into a paper. Once you have made all your folds you open your paper again and make the actual fold that you will be using for the trick. Take the right side of your paper and fold it where the fold is already made. You are then going to fold it that same way again. You are going against the original fold. Keep folding it this way until you get to the little piece that you have at the end. You are going to fold the little piece at the end over top of all your folds. Now you have to find where you are going to place the card. You have to measure where the card is going to go. Fold the bottom of your paper a little bit smaller than the length of the card. You then have to double stick tape your card right in the middle so that it hides the paper length wise and width wise. You should now have your card at the bottom of the paper but with no paper showing. You then have to fold the top of the paper. You have to fold the paper backwards so that it is over the paper behind the card. Then you fold what is left of the paper over that. Your paper should all be folded behind the card. You should now have the open part of the paper back behind the card. These will be your pull tabs. Your pull tabs should be pointing downwards at all times. Method: This routine is very simple and almost self working. You take your pull tabs that are pointing downwards and let the front of the paper fall down and then open up your paper. The card automatically is facing you and not your audience. You can then fold your paper in half and show it front and back. You can end the trick there or you can use the paper for a production item. Example is thumb tip and silk or a fan of cards. You can also use this method to produce a dove from nowhere. Note: We are working with paper so it does rip very easily. To repair the rips just put clear tape across it and it should last you a while. Tip # 1: The card to newspaper can be done at any time during your routine. You can do it to music or without. You don't really need patter to do this trick. Tip # 2: As a magician that works with a lot of gimmicked cards, the card to newspaper fits perfectly into a normal deck of poker cards. You can put it at the bottom of the deck and do other routines and then use your card to newspaper. Fact: Jamie-G claims exclusive rights to this effect. If there are any other effects out there like this I have no knowledge of it. It took me six months to figure out the fold for this trick. ----------------- 18. The Amazing Orchante Saga ----------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) Page 45 For three months, Hope and I travelled all over Fiji, and then she fell ‘out of love’. I packed my bags and baggage, and went home to New Zealand, and that was that. I never saw or heard from her again!!! June 1966 - Alan Horobin, with tent, Chimps, a monkey, the two Peters and I in tow, went back to Fiji. We toured for two months; I started to wonder what Nationality I was, Kiwi, or Fijian. My God, it was hot working under canvas. Alan had taken all the side-flaps off so we could get some sort of breeze through the tent, it didn’t help much. I tell you, if anyone who was grossly overweight - you know, a really fat bastard, had been with us, they would have finished up looking like ‘Twiggy’! The worst place I can recall was a village called BA. Situated in a small valley, it was so hot I’ll swear that the instruments to measure that sort of temperature have yet to be invented. Alan had, thoughtfully, bought a dozen buckets, and then filled them with water to cool us down. As each of us finished doing ‘our thing’, we’d race out the back and upend a bucket or two, over our heads. The steam rose straight up to the upper reaches of the Troposphere - Ok, Ok, I’m exaggerating, but you get the idea. IT WAS BLOODY HOT! Even the Fijians couldn’t stand it. Alan, again thoughtfully, packed up and we moved on, Thank God! That was the nearest to Hell I ever want to be! Years later, early 80’s, when Veronica and I practically lived on the cruise ship the ‘MINGHUA’ (it sailed from Australia to China, Japan, and all ports in between and back again - each cruise took six weeks). We were crossing the International Date Line somewhere around Guam - absolutely beautiful day, but it got so hot that by 1pm every passenger, and the crew, had gone inside. I sat out sunbathing for hours, on my own. The swimming pool was all mine. For me, after that Hellhole BA, the temperature was just right. That has never changed - when we arrived in England 1985 (16 years ago - make that 20 - I first wrote this in 2001) it was the middle of summer. I froze, still do! Back to Fiji - another memorable event for me was visiting the Emperor Gold Mines at Vautakola. They (the management) took us down more than a mile underground to see the gold seam. Also fascinating, was looking straight up the mile plus mine-shaft and seeing the stars shining brightly, as they do in an unpolluted atmosphere, as though it was a dark night, when in fact it was broad daylight outside. It was a little unnerving being that far underground - you get buried in less than that! Another incident that springs to mind - Charlie, Al’s youngest chimp, decided to climb up one of the two very heavy tent poles, which with the added weight of the tent it supported, weighed ‘A Ton’. It was immovable. Charlie didn’t think so. For no reason at all, he refused to come down, and, in a sheer blinding rage, started shaking that pole. He shook it so hard, the other pole, the entire tent, nearly came down. Then, thankfully, having gotten whatever was bugging him out of his system; he quietly climbed down, like a lamb, and cuddled up in Alan’s arms. I had read somewhere about the amazing strength of these animals and, Alan had warned us not to rile them, especially Cheetah, the eldest one. That was an incredible demonstration of their strength, and Charlie was only a young Chimpanzee! August arrived, and we left Fiji for home - New Zealand. As if you didn’t know. ---------------- 19.
