Competition Judges Wanted For IBM Convention ----------------- Message from Michael Durant - Convention Contest Head Judge 2005 Jerry Schnepp did a great job of mentioning the glamor of the competitions. But if you are not interested in being in front of the audience but still want to help make this the best competition possible, why not consider helping us judge the acts? We are always looking for a few good magicians with a discerning eye to help us figure out which acts are the best. In the mean time you get to see some of the most creative new magic around and spot some of the most promising talent from the best seat in the house. Who could ask for more? If you are willing to donate one morning of the convention to help give the contestants what they really want, great feedback about their acts, please drop me a line at miked@magician.org. It is a rewarding, entertaining experience that is one of the highlights of my convention experience. You can make it one of yours as well. ----------------- 3. April 1 & 2 illusion genius Ben Robinson will set the stage with some very alarming and disarming illusions as he begins his second year as the New York opening act for the acclaimed singing group October Project. One the first night he will PSYCHICLY PROJECT HIMSELF inside another person, and then later chop his arm into three pieces, a signature illusion in his repertoire since 1987 he later licensed to David Copperfield. April 2 Robinson will conjure up the real honest to goodness GHOST OF KING HAMLET from the famous play by Shakespeare. If you don’t believe in psychic projection or ghosts, you will believe this is the hottest ticket in town this weekend when special musical guests Sylvia Tosun (4/1) and Gabrielle (4/2) open their sets before the stars of October Project hit the stage. It all happens in a gorgeous loft filled with dazzling art in the center of SoHo and tickets are selling fast because the seating is EXTREMELY limited. Please be sure to sign up for the $50 ticket which also includes wine punch and assorted light fare. It is a night that will not be repeated until Fall, so come and join in the best April Fool’s Show in New York City. Got to the official October Project website at: www.octoberproject.net for further information. Thanks for listening, and we look forward to seeing you at the show! IBM Ring 337 Show ----------------- Message from Frank Beasley The "Gentleman" Jim Heuser Ring 337 performed a Magic Show for residents of "Leisure Ville" to pay back for the use of their facilities for monthly meetings. Eight magicians and a ventriloquist participated. They seemed to enjoy it and of course so did we. ----------------- 10. Good Dealer - Great Show ----------------- Message from Loch David Crane I write to commend DIXIE DOOLEY’S ESCAPE show at the Riviera in Las Vegas. While attending Jeff McBrides miraculous Master Class I also saw Dixie’s show advertising free handcuffs too. After the amazing dark Carnival act (including tearing his arms out of a steel straightjacket) he signed autographs and gave out posters, two great fan bonuses. His partner was a limber and lanky Shedini who performed flawless erotic escapes for the breathless crowd. No Vegas glitz here! After the show the promised handcuffs were not provided, and after writing to polite people at PENGUIN MAGIC I was given a choice of several good choices. Within a week a beautiful and balanced wand arrived in rose wood with heavy brass bullet tips which unscrewed; it was enough to make The Professor spin (it) in his grave! If you want a good dealer try Penguin, and if you’re near Vegas and want a live show so close you can hear the ratchets click tighter against his skin, head for the Dixie Dooley ESCAPE! ----------------- 11. How To Contact Flip ----------------- Message from Hudson grotzingers@magician.org Does anyone know how to contact FLIP? Appearing Goldfish In Glass - Jamie-G ----------------- Message from Jamie-G Effect- The magician shows a glass with water in it. The magician then takes a color silk and covers the class. After the magician say a few magic words the magician then removes the colored silk and there is a real live gold fish in the glass. Props- A large thumb tip, glass of water any glass will do (I use a wine glass the kind with a very thin handle on it), gold fish. Method - You should use this as a first opening effect. The gold fish is in your thumb tip with water in the thumb tip is on your thumb (if you can't fit the thumb tip on with the gold fish in the tip you will have to palm the thumb tip.) you hold the colored silk in the same hand as if the silk is the only thing in your hand. This is done by showing the silk front to back then holding the silk with one hand and passing your other hand up and down the silk. Show the glass of water make sure everyone sees the glass and that there is only water in it. You are about to cover the glass with the silk you cover the class from the front of the glass to the back and at the same time this is happening you take the thumb tip off and dump the gold fish into the glass then place the tip back on. If this is done right no one should see any of this action going on it should look like you are just covering the glass with the silk. Now at this point you can say some magic words or you can have someone come up and make it look like that they have produced the gold fish. Once you remove the colored silk the goldfish is there. You can make this effect in many different ways. You can produce the goldfish, your helper or birthday child can produce it. You can wave a magic wand, or you can wave your hands whatever way that is best for you. When you take the silk away from the glass this is when you can ditch your thumb tip. Tip- You can put some double stick tape on the back of your thumb tip and if you use a table you can stick the tip on the table with the goldfish in it when you are ready to use it the fish is there. Fact- I have noticed that since I was working with my doves that everyone loves to see something appear or disappear that is alive and real may it be a person, bird or fish once you have produced some thing that is alive it doesn’t matter what you do after that because in their eyes (spectator) you just did some great magic. I use the feeder goldfish they are very small and very cheap I get two feeder goldfish for a dollar and trust me it is worth every penny. Also if the parents allow it I would give the magic goldfish to the birthday child. I'm sure that some magicians are all ready doing this and this method to me is just basic commonsense. Hope you guys enjoy it. ----------------- 15. The Amazing Orchante Saga ----------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) Page 44 Alan Horobin Alan was born in London, where his father was a Zookeeper. Alan travelled the world with Circuses, before settling down in New Zealand where he came to be regarded as the best trainer of Chimpanzees, both in New Zealand, and Australia. He had two Chimps that he performed with, Cheetah, who could be quite temperamental, and Charlie. Alan bought a small single-pole tent, and putting a show together with the chimps and the two Peters, (Taylor & Newberry) went up to Noumea, the capital of New Caledonia. Nobody on that island had seen a chimpanzee before, except in Tarzan movies; Alan made a bloody fortune. Each show lasted around 45 minutes; tent emptied out and 30 minutes later, once again filled to capacity, the next show started. This went on all day and half the night, week after week. It was the nearest you could get to printing your own money - legally. The people just poured in, returning time after time… Alan bought A BIGGER TENT with TWO POLES, and then headed off to Fiji, again with Peter Taylor and Newbs but, this time, with myself and New Zealand’s famous Country and Western singer, the late Rusty Greaves in the show as well. We went from Nadi to Suva, and every place in between, for two solid months - from October 6th to December 10th, 1965. It was bloody amazing! While we were showing in the town of Sigatoka, I met a young lady, Hope Foster; her father was the manager of Burns-Phillips, a company that has large department stores all over Fiji, and many other Pacific Islands. Hope was quite beautiful, due to her parents being of an Asian/American/Fijian mix. God knows what she saw in me, but we fell ‘in love’, and she toured with me and the show for the duration. We made plans that I would return to Fiji in January 1966, after I had finished my Christmas/New Year bookings in New Zealand. My Mum and Dad were totally disgusted that I would traipse off to a ‘foreign country’ to meet up with ‘Some Female’ for God only knows what purpose - bloody hell, I was 22 years old with raging hormones! When I got over there, I came up with the bright idea of putting on the ‘Orchanté Show’ at Picture Theatres, doing an hour plus show, then after the interval, the feature film would be shown. Hope organised the Theatres and where we were to go, after all, Fiji was her home and she knew the country inside out. I did a 60/40 split with the Theatre Managers, with 60% coming to me, of course. Hope took me to places way off the Tourist route, little villages not even on the map. It was during this time that she also took me to various Hindu festivals that are not for the eyes of tourists; these were fanatical, religious ceremonies, and I was only allowed to attend because of Hope, although I had a sneaking suspicion that my own Yoga talents may also have played a part. I saw some amazing things. Try this on for size! Sugar is the main export product of Fiji; the cane is cut down with very sharp, very large knives. These knives were also used in some of these Hinduism rites, closed to all but the initiated. I am one of the very few white men to have witnessed this. Getting themselves into a high fever pitch of zealous fervour, the men slashed themselves, and others, with these knives. Their hands, arms, and legs should have been damn near cut off! They should have had huge cuts/scars/wounds on their bodies… NOTHING! NO WOUNDS, NO BLOOD… EXPLAIN THAT, I CAN’T! Well I can, sort of; I know you can control pain and bodily functions with pure thought. I can push needles through my cheeks, sew a button onto my arm without pain or blood etc; but what these people did was entirely something else again. The Fijian Fire-walkers are world famous, but the Hindus also perform this feat, but not as a tourist attraction; it is a part of their religious ceremonies, and is mind-boggling! At their ceremonies, the fire-pit is so hot you cannot stand NEAR it - so intense is the heat! Throw green grass - NOT IN, just AT it, and it bursts into flames! They DON’T run, or walk quickly along the length of the pit (as I’ve seen every so called ‘Expert’ White Man do on various T.V. programmes), they stroll S-L-O-W-L-Y, from one end to the other. Not only that, most Hindus have quite hairy legs - the hairs do not singe! Not even the dried grass ornaments they sometimes wear around their ankles burn! As far as I’m concerned, all of the foregoing blows Science and Medical Principals as we know it, right off this planet! Heavy stuff, yes, but none the less - FACT! What’s that line - ‘There are more things in Heaven and Earth, than are dreamed of in your philosophy, Horatio’. ---------------- 16.
