Roy & Sigfried - A Most Magical Moment ----------------- Message from Steve Pradell (Alaska) The great surprise at the 2005 World Magic Seminar in Las Vegas this week came when Roy appeared on stage with Sigfried. Roy was able to speak, although his speech was slurred, and he appeared to be in good spirits. He was also able to stand, leaning on Sigfried, and he took a few steps with a walker. The audience immediately rose to its feet to give Roy a standing ovation, and everyone was touched by this, the most magical moment of the Seminar. ----------------- 3. Special Workshop Leaders Wanted ----------------- Message from George Schindler (US) Leaders Needed For Special Focus Workshops At S.a.m. Boston Convention. One of the greatly anticipated new features of the S.A.M. 2005 Boston Convention will be the Special Focus Workshops, facilitated by knowledgeable people in multiple areas of interest, such as Escapes, The Business Side of Magic, the History of Magic and Collecting, Restaurant Magic, Trade Shows, Parlour/Stand-up Routines, Club Magic, Kid Shows, School Shows, Clowning, Ventriloquism, etc.! Volunteer Facilitators are needed for each workshop to help initiate discussions, and moderate the workshops, which are designed to be group discussions of best practices and ideas (rather than a lecture format). Workshops will be held in small meeting rooms. If you have a passion for a particular facet of magic entertainment, can you lead one of the small group discussions? Please send your idea for a Special Focus Workshop, and a brief resume of your expertise in this area of magic to: Michael Douglass, Executive Director, S.A.M. Conventions, P.O. Box 579333, Modesto, CA 95357, or e-mail  samconvention@earthlink.net Submissions must be received by March 31, 2005. The decisions on Volunteer Facilitators will be final, and made by the Executive Director (Michael Douglass, P.N.P.), and Executive Producer for Talent and Shows (R.G. Smith). ----------------- 7. 26th Annual Abbott's Close-up Convention ----------------- Message from Gerard Costello (US) As stated in a previous post by Hank Moorehouse this year’s Abbott's Close-up Convention promises to be one of the best. Peter J Shield’s World of Unexplained Mysteries has been screened in Australia and the US and his radio series of the same name was syndicated on 47 stations around Australia. On Da Cera radio in Spain, and “The Talk of Las Vegas” Radio 2KY in Las Vagas. Peter has completed four World Tours, lecturing and demonstrating the power of the mind and has earned the title of Australia’s foremost “Man of Mystery” having lived and preformed there for over 22 years. Peter has been invited by the International Brotherhood of Magicians’ Malta Ring to host their upcoming annual production - this year titled Broadway Magic. The show will include eight of Malta’s top magic performers each presenting magic themed to a Broadway hit. This year at Peter Shield’s suggestion, the group will present two performances, including a special matinee to which 200 underprivileged and disadvantaged children are to be invited. Shield has donated his fee to meet half the costs and a sponsor is to be sought to provide the balance. The children will enjoy a magic spectacle. Tickets for both shows will go on sale next month. Appearing Red Rose-Too Music ----------------- Message from Jamie-G (Canada) Body: Apart from my card melt, which everyone should give a chance even if your not into card or close up effects but for the fellowship and just to add something new to your magic close up case but not your "JUNK DRAWER" These effects I do put a lot of hard thinking and step by step and over and over practice it is almost like therapy. Trust me as I say I'm not trying to make a million dollars off the card melt I figure I would share it with fellow magicians, novice and advanced, it is so hard today for magicians to learn magic plus the funny thing is I'm a stage and parlor magician mainly so it don't really hurt me at all anyway. I feel the magic should be new, awesome, and if possible never seen before (we all know how rare this is in magic we can all agree on this.) Here is a effect I have not put together yet it’s just in the works. If anyone would like to try it by all means do but it has to do with fire and if you are under 18 forget it unless you are under adult supervision I do not accept any responsibility if you get hurt. Appearing Red Rose- By Jamie-G Effect: A magicians brings out a box of red rose tea. The magician reaches inside the box and pulls out a red rose tea bag. At this time the magician puts a nice red candle on the table and lights the candle. The magician thEn takes the red rose tea bag and touches it to the flame of the candle in a blink of an eye the tea bag is gone and in its place is a real red rose. Props: an appearing red rose, flash paper, Flash power, Flash string, an empty box of red rose tea and Flash paper glue. NOTE: If you can't find flash paper glue I use very thin layers of clear nail polish. Also you can get the appearing rose at your magic dealer. Construction Of Tea Bag: you have to basically make a tea bag out of all of your flash props. If you know what a tea bag looks like then it is going to be easy to make. You are going to make rectangular sheet. This, when folded will look like a square. Once you have made the square you are going to glue the sides together. Now you will have a pocket at the top of the bag to put your flash powder in. If you don't want to use flash powder then just put some black pepper into the bag but very little that way it doesn't make a very big mess. Once you have done that then you are going to add your flash string to the bag. You take your flash string and glue one end slightly into the top of the tea bag and then glue everything shut. At the other end of your string you are going to add your red rose paper that you find at every end of the tea bag. Now you are almost ready to do the trick. Method: Everything should fit into the tea box. You will have this placed in or on your table. You are going to take out your candle and place it on your table. Light like you would normally do. You will fold up your rose in you hand. At the same time you are going to pull out your tea bag. Next you are going to carefully touch the tea bag to the candle and as it is burning then you are going to let your rose drop from your hand. Note: This effect is done to slow music for example "The Lady In Red" so make sure all your movements are slow as well. By having slower movements it will intertwine with the music and will look great. This would be a great effect for weddings followed by other rose and flower effects like the colour changing rose and torch to rose and the dancing rose. Special Note: I feel that this effect played with the right music can be a very moving and heartfelt effect the blend of fire and a little misdirection can create even a mood for love. I do feel that this is a great effect and should not be just passed by. give it a try, I promise you will love it. I'm trying my best to give you guys my very best I hope you enjoy it and thank you for giving this effect a try. . . . . . . . . . . JAMIE-G ----------------- 14. The Amazing Orchante Saga ----------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) Page 41 Memories - Friends and Acquaintances Past and present Although I knew most of what follows, - the details were supplied by my dear friend and friend of, how long? - Good God, 35 years - Sally Metzger (nee Phillips), who now lives with her husband Derek (well-known New Zealand singer), in Sydney, Australia (which was also our 'home town', for 10 years). More of Sally and Derek, later. When I first met Peter Taylor (December 31st, 1964), there was also another Peter in the ‘biz’, whom I knew - Peter Newberry. He, with his partner, David Baylis had been on the entertainment scene for around 8 years, performing since about 1957. They had two completely different acts - the first, as ‘The ‘Demonos’, was a trick-cyclist act, which featured the 'smallest bike in the world'; the other, as ‘The Movados’, was pure comedy; ‘The Laziest Acrobats in the World - with their faces painted flat white, and holding dead-pan expressions it was a total scream. Every lift, pose, and movement, was performed in extreme slow motion. The amount of physical strength and control necessary must have been enormous! David Baylis started working with Peter, when he was only 13. According to Peter Newberry's wife, Pat, they had to get special permission for David to work, because of his age, especially when they were booked into the world famous Chequer's Night Club which was situated in the equally (in) famous King's Cross, of Sydney Australia. When they arrived there, they discovered that two ‘spots’ were required - they only had one, which was the trick-cycling and acrobatics, combined, so they split the two, created the idea of using white faces, etc., and from an advertising sign they spotted for watches, the stage name 'Movados' was born. Sometime during the early part of 1965, the two Peters met up - probably at some show they were both booked for. It was a happy coincidence, as David had wanted to leave the act for some time (he and Peter Newberry had at that time been together for 8 years), to buy a restaurant, and to pursue his own career as a Cordon Bleu chef. Peter Taylor fitted the 'Demonos/Movados' acts perfectly, being an acrobat in his own right as well as a juggler. David and Peter Newberry (nicknamed 'Newbs') taught the act to Peter Taylor, and everyone was happy - David bought his restaurant, and Newbs had his new partner in Peter Taylor, who was elated as he could still work his own act as 'Delmere', and potentially double his income. With the volume of work he/they were getting (and myself, for that matter), our 'bird watching' on Friday nights, gradually became a thing of the past. The next time I worked with the now two Peters, was in FIJI, touring with Alan Horobin and his chimps, for two months - from the 6th October to the 10th December 1965. We HAD to leave by then, as the two Peters and I had Company Christmas-party bookings to fulfil in Auckland, starting Saturday the 11th December. According to my Diary, I did 8 shows that day - the first started at 10.15am, the last finished 11pm that night - no rest for the wicked! I'll come back later to Fiji and Al Horobin. Christmas and New Year's Eve 1965 - show at the Rotorua Sound Shell, with myself, performing the Magic, Mime and Yoga acts, the two Peters doing the Demonos and Movados routines, and the Compere, Lew Pryme - another well known New Zealander - singer, T.V. personality, and Rugby- Sports writer. After the show, Lew introduced us to his friend, Sally Phillips, who was on holiday with her friend Jenny - that was the first time Sally had met any of us - apart from Lew Pryme. Talking to Sally on the phone the other day, as I often do, (England to Australia - to hell with the expense), probing her seemingly inexhaustible memory and confirming details (Derek, her husband, calls her ‘a walking encyclopaedia). She says ‘you remember Jenny, don’t you?’ ‘No!’ ‘Well, you should’ says Sally ‘you and she …’ ‘I didn’t’ ‘you did,’ says Sally ‘you randy bugger!’ ‘Hey, Sally, my love - it takes two!’ Perhaps, Mary Throll (retired Auckland Agent) was right when she said ‘Oh, Tom, you were a ‘little terror’ with the ladies in those days’. ------------------ 15.
