Lee and Helene Grabel Honoured ----------------- Message from Zappo (Larry Wright) (US) The Society of American Magicians Assembly 112 in Concord, California, held a gala night on Monday, November 1, 2004, to honor one of the World's greatest magicians, Lee Grabel and his assistant and wife of 60 years, Helene. The event was a smashing success with a full house, standing-room-only crowd of colleagues and admirers gathered at the new California Magic Dinner Theatre in Martinez, California. Lee and Helene regaled the audience with wonderful tales of their days traveling around the United States doing magic during the decades of the 1940's and 1950's. There were many stories shared about the origins of some of Lee's illusions including the tale of the very famous "Floating Piano." Lee said he discovered a small mahogany piano in the window of a store which looked to be the perfect size to "float" in his illusion show. He went inside and asked the proprietor whether the piano could be played while it was upside down. You can imagine the looks Lee drew with his unusual question. However, after a short period of time the manager of the store agreed that since it was close to closing time he would have his workmen turn the piano upside down so that it could be tested since he had never been asked this question before (and probably after too). The men spread protective padding on the floor of the store, flipped the piano on its lid, and let Lee pound away at the keys. Sure enough the piano did play beautifully in the inverted position, which was central to the act. Lee hired a pianist in each location where the show toured. The pianist was instructed to keep playing when the piano levitated and rotated through 360 degrees. He said that despite the fact that they warned the pianists that the piano and the chair they were sitting on to play the piano was going to rise into the air carrying the pianist along for the ride, once the piano started to rotate away from horizontal, the pianists would frequently stop playing and grab the sides of the instrument holding on for dear life. One night, Lee stumbled on the solution to this persistent problem. He told the pianist that it was imperative that they continued to play the instrument at all costs since it was the music that kept the piano floating and rotating. From that point on, every pianist played like there was no tomorrow once the piano started to rise and rotate. The list of magicians attending the evening was filled with celebrities. Lance Burton flew in from Las Vegas. It was just more than ten years ago that Lee Grabel turned over the Magic Mantle to Lance, adding him to the Royal Dynasty of Magic. The Mantle was passed down from Kellar to Thurston, from Thurston to Dante, from Dante to Grabel and in 1994 from Grabel to Burton. The History of the Magic Mantle was related during the event, and has previously been recounted in an article published in Magic New Zealand. Lance told the crowd that he was surprised and honored when Lee named him into the succession as America's Premiere Magician, and that he has formed a fast friendship with Lee and Helene since that time. Milt Larsen, the "founder and creator" of the Magic Castle in Hollywood, spoke about Lee and Helene's contribution to the world of magic. Ormond McGill who performed spook shows and other magic productions for decades also attended the event to honor his friends Lee and Helene. Patrick Martin was in attendance, as were Bob Brown and Brenda. One of the best surprises of the evening was that Al Lewis who served as Lee and Helene's stage manager, and "general all around do everything guy" came to honor the couple. Al has his own set of remarkable stories to tell regarding the challenges, innovative solutions and occasional hardships that accompanied life on the road with the touring show. International President John Apperson of the Society of American Magicians, and his wife, flew in for the event. Most Illustrious Apperson honored the Grabels with a special award and certificate from National S.A.M. Several letters were read from individuals who were unable to attend the event. California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger wrote a personal letter praising Lee's contribution to the entertainment industry. David Copperfield sent a letter of congratulations, as did several other magicians from around the world too many to mention. The Mayor of the City of Martinez personally read and presented an official City proclamation in honor of the Grabels. A plaque was presented by S.A.M. Assembly 112 recognizing the contribution Lee has made as a member of our Assembly. Finally, all in attendance were asked to sign an enormous card with personal comments for the Grabels. The event turned out to be quite newsworthy. The ABC Television station in San Francisco sent a cameraman to cover the event as did the Contra Costa Times and the San Francisco Chronicle. This was true despite the fact that the event was held the day before the Presidential Election when the news media is incredibly busy covering political news stories. Video monitors were set up around the room and Lee showed recently compiled DVD segments of historical footage of his show and promotional trailers. He added his own commentary to each segment, telling the background story behind the video. Questions were posed by moderator Rick Allen, who was the key organizer for the event, and by audience members. Each answer brought another incredible story, and the entire program wove an enchanting window into a major chapter of Magic History in America. At the conclusion of the evening Lee raised a champagne toast to the friends who had gathered to honor him and Helene. In typical gracious fashion, he thanked those in attendance for making the effort to "show up." Needless to say, everyone in the room would not have missed this special evening. They all love Lee and Helene, and appreciate their giving nature and their willingness to share the magic. Lee and Helene were available to sign autographs and have a personal sit down chat with everyone who attended, a session that lasted until nearly midnight. As people filtered out of the California Magic Dinner Theatre they undoubtedly realized that they had just experienced a once in a lifetime moment of magic history, and each person enjoyed a sense of pride at having been afforded the chance to participate in a unique memorable occasion. ----------------- 3. My Correct Address - Bev Bergeron ----------------- Message from Bev Bergeron (US) I made a big mistake - well not me - my darn spell checker - it changed my address. My correct address: 7013 Delora Dr., Orlando, FL 32819 -- the spell checker changed it to "Debra." Tammy Calvert called and told me so. She wanted to know if we had moved. Nice people the Calverts. ----------------- 4. IBM International President Tony Wilson’s Magical Adventures ----------------- Message from Tony Wilson - IBM International President 2004 - 2005 Our three days in Shanghai were spent sightseeing and shopping as we were not able to contact local magicians due to the language difficulty but did see a clown/magician /juggler working on a stage outside the Oriental Pearl Broadcasting and TV Tower before we went up to the 263 metre observation area to view this amazing city of 17 million people. Hong Kong was our next stop and we flew from Shanghai, China to Hong Kong with Dragon Air and were impressed with their service on the flight. We were also impressed with their check in service as we have been traveling with four suitcases and two cabin bags that collectively now weigh 110kgs and Dragon Air are not part of the Star Alliance which have allowed us 2 pieces of baggage per person. Dragon Air had a limit of 20 kgs per person. This had been concerning us, but by checking in early and smiling nicely, there was no problem. We transferred from Hong Kong airport by bus to our Nathan Street Hotel and Albert Tam our IBM TVP for the Far East called us to discuss our plans for the three days we had available in Hong Kong. Albert picked us up that evening and took us to the Magic Club at one of the Hong Kong Universities where they were having their six monthly open night. Albert and I performed and we enjoyed watching the rest of the show put on by the members to an audience of over 100 young students aged between 19 and 23. A short visit to the night market after this event completed a busy (and tiring) day which started at 5am in Shanghai! The next day was spent shopping and the evening spent attending a full Chinese Banquet put on for us by the Magicians Association of Hong Kong (IBM Ring 277/SAM Assembly 264) at a restaurant a short walk from our hotel in Nathan Road. Franz Harary and his wife were also in Hong Kong that night and were able to join us. They had been working in China. Before the sumptuous banquet got under way I was introduced and performed three New Zealand tricks to those present. I followed this with a presentation to Albert Tam, President of TMAHK with a copy of Magicana, a Ring 160 banner and a copy of Ring 160 Newsletter as well as present him with a Presidential Citation for all the good work he performs as our Far East TVP. In turn he presented me with a copy of their Association Newsletter signed by his executive members, many of whom were present that evening. The next day Simon C Y Ma Vice President of the Magicians Association of Hong Kong and his wife Vicki kindly picked Mary and I up at noon to take us sightseeing. We rode the tram to the Peak of Hong Kong, visited Repulse Bay, Stanley Bay and Aberdeen before ending up at Toys R Us in the Miramar Tower where Fantasma Toys have an outlet for their new line of Magic Tricks and Magic Sets. Albert Tam is involved with this new product range and we visited their demonstration stand and met new staff, including Victor Tam, entertainment manager. A final drink with some of the officers of the MAHK and members brought a three day visit to Hong Kong to a pleasant finish as we had another 5am start next morning for our flight to Tokyo, Japan. Next week Tokyo, Japan and the end of our four month tour of duty and magical adventure. ----------------- 5. Who Wants To Be A Millionaire - Jamie-G ----------------- Message from Jamie-G (Canada) Effect: Four 6/49 tickets are layed out. You tell the spectator that one is a winner for a million dollars. The only problem is they have to pick the right ticket. You ask them to pick two tickets out of the four of them, when they do you remove the two they picked. Now there is only two left. You tell them to pick just one. You then take away the one they picked leaving only one. Up to now the spectator has picked everything not the magician. All there is left to do is read the winning numbers on the official ticket. The winning ticket is read and guesses what you just won a million dollars. You go in the envelope and give a million dollars U.S. to the winner. This is excellent for kids. Requirements: You need four 6/49 tickets, a 6/49 winning up date ticket (these tickets are yellow), a pen, a white paper envelope and fake money. Tip: You can find most of this at a store that sells Lotto tickets. The fake money is at magic stores or fun shops. Set-Up: Take one of the 6/49 tickets and copy the winning numbers on it. This is going to be the winning ticket .The other three can be marked any numbers as long as they aren't the winning numbers. Note: All the 6/49 ticket's should be marked all with different numbers this way the tickets wont be mistaken for each other. Always make sure that you use a pen that way there the numbers that are picked are permanent. Special Note: I use this trick for adults and children shows. BUT the children like it the best because they get the million dollar bill. This is a great give away in your show. This is a great way to get repeat birthday party shows. Hint: This is a great 100% participation trick. This should be a must in any show. Let's think about this for a minute everybody knows the value of money. This is why this trick fits in anywhere. Method: Nothing special here just using the magicians choice for the 6/49 tickets. What makes this trick work is the patter and presentation. Also the killer part in this is giving them the money. Also you actually use two people. When it's time to read the winning ticket you get another spectator to read it. After my shows I have people begging to tell them how this trick is done. Make sure that after the person wins the Lotto you give them the money this is the most important part of the trick. (Giving the money) Magicians Choice: Remember which ticket is the winning one. You can put a little mark on each one to remind yourself. Next you have the spectator pick two tickets. If they pick one of the winning ones then you remove the other two. If theY choose both of the losing ones then you remove them. Next you tell the spectator to pick just one. If they pick the winning ticket you have them keep their finger on it. If they choose the losing one then you remove that ticket and you will always be left with the winning ticket. After reading the winning numbers to the spectator you can give them the ticket and one million dollars. Patter: Who here likes money? I know that that is a silly question. Today could be your lucky day because you have the chance to win one million dollars. So the real question would be "WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE"? I have here four different 6/49 tickets and only one of them is the winner. It's not so easy because the hard part is that you have to pick the winning ticket. Out of these four tickets please pick two. Perfect, now I will remove those two. Now I want you to pick just one more. You have just one ticket left. Out of the four tickets there were you picked this one? Now we have to get another spectator up to read out the winning numbers. If your numbers match the winning numbers then you have just won one million dollars. The spectator reads the numbers. Oh my goodness you have just won one million dollars. You hand them a one million dollar bill. Don't spend it all in one spot and enjoy the rest of the show for free. ----------------- 10. The Amazing Orchante Saga ----------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) Page 24 1960/61 - FIRE-EATING ‘Little Boys Shouldn’t Play With Matches’! Oh, Really? When I first started this episode about Fire-eating, I couldn’t think of what to say except, Practice, Perseverance and putting up with burns etc., but on reflection, there’s more to it than just that. It has now turned into an ‘extended edition’. Some like it hot, and I’m not talking about Mexican chilli peppers (although there is a ‘very messy’ story about those, that I may relate later). Don’t Breathe in - Breathe Out, is the golden ‘Unwritten Law’, given by mentors to apprentice Fire-Eaters. Mentors? Such luxury - I’m completely self-taught in all aspects of my skills, fire-eating being no exception. Consequently my techniques are my own, so breathe in I did - quickly learned it’s not such a clever thing to do, unless you apply controlled Yoga breathing disciplines, which I did, once I got the basics sorted out, like, blisters - inside and out; fearsome burns, patchy/singed eyebrows and hair, correct angles, etc. Thank God for Self-Hypnosis! Fumes, from whatever type of fuel you are using, can get down into the lungs and do some awful damage. Worst-case scenario - as you bring a flaming torch towards your mouth, it could ignite the fumes, which have accumulated in your lungs, and, Ka-Boom, your chest would explode! Unfortunately, for some, this has happened. My exclusive routine requires that I do inhale fumes, most dangerous, as the slightest error in judgement or breathing would result in a - ‘Internal explosion’! I would in fact, Blow-Up! (‘Wow, that guy has guts’ ‘Yep, they’ve splattered all over the place!) My first fire torches were the wooden doweling rods from coat hangers (with the wire removed, of course). Silver paper from cigarette packets wrapped around 4” of one end - stopped the fire and heat from burning through the doweling. Next, an old sheet from Mum’s linen cupboard (I think it was old), torn into long strips and wrapped around the silver paper - building it up to a size which would fit right into my mouth. In fact, the ‘heads’ of my torches are much larger than those of other fire-eaters I’ve seen (larger the torch head, the bigger and hotter the flame). One I made up was so big that I had to physically ‘push’ it into my mouth. This I used when going around the audience to ‘feel the heat’ of the flame. It sure came in handy for ‘smart arses’, and reporters, also those fire-eaters who would come backstage to ‘prove’ that they could do better, using my torches. Ha! In forty years, I’ve yet to meet anyone who could get that torch near his or her face, let alone into their mouth; too big and, too hot so, how did In manage it? Two things - the torch was custom made to fit (only by cramming) my mouth, and Self Hypnosis. I simply blocked the searing heat from my mind (actually, self hypnosis was the driving force behind my entire Fakir Show). Most fire-eaters include ‘Body Burning’ in their routines; where you run flaming tapers over your bare arms, body, etc. If done quickly enough, no problem. Not me. I performed it, as far as the audience was concerned, ‘Painfully slowly’; of course, I was employing self-hypnosis. Many years ago, in a dressing room after a gig, Veronica said “I’ve never noticed it before, but your arms come up in goose-bumps when you run the fire over them”! Well, yes, because I’ve convinced my subconscious that my arms are ‘Ice-Cold’ - it only takes a few seconds to do this. There is a well-known hypnotic experiment where a hypnotised subject, when told that a pencil (or anything else for that matter), is a ‘Red-Hot Poker’, will jump, scream, and blisters will develop where they’ve been touched. If however, they are told that the arm was cold or frozen, it develops (like mine) goose-bumps - and if you hold a burning match or such under their arm, they will feel nothing, nor does the skin blister, (although it will eventually, if ‘burnt’ for too long). Many stage hypnotists, as part of their performance, tell their subjects ‘you’re now in the middle Antarctica (or similar), it is freezing, you’re so cold…etc.’ if you were close enough, you would see that these subjects do react physically - ‘Goose Bumps’, shaking and shivering, as if they had actually, suddenly, been transported to that extreme climatic region. The reverse is also true. When told they are in the Tropics, they will not only throw off clothing, but, break out into beads on perspiration. Such is the power of suggestion. ------------------ 11.
