Tony Wilson’s Magical Adventures ----------------- Message from Tony Wilson - IBM International President 2004 - 2005 We checked into the Mark Adams hotel in St Louis and settled down for another 6 night stay. As guests of the Society of American Magicians we were well looked after and enjoyed meeting many friends we hadn’t seen for some time and some we had seen at our own IBM Convention in Cleveland a few days before. It was great to be able to attend a wide range of  activities offered and to observe how the SAM ran their Convention. Great! The evening shows were held in a superb theatre not far from the hotel and offered a wide range of acts, some seen and some unseen by us in the past. Thank you SAM for the  opportunity to attend and renew old acquaintances and make new ones. On Sunday we were driven through to Indianapolis, Indiana to attend a ring 10 “pitch-in” picnic. This is what we call a “pot luck’ lunch where everyone brings food and drink and it is shared. We also shared a 30 minute thunderstorm just before I gave a 20 minute show to Ring members present and presented them with a Ring 160 pendant and a copy of “Magicana”, New Zealand’s only magic magazine. In return they made me an honorary member of Ring 10.Thank you Ring 10. Next was a hectic two days staying with friends Sunny and Peter Johnson in Indianapolis. We caught up on Magic, Ballooning and Clowning, IBM business and attended a show Sunny presented to ¾ year olds as Mother Goose. Sunny and Peter also drove us to Marion, Indiana for the first night of a four day Annual Convention (their 46th) put on by the International Fellowship of Christian Magicians (and performing arts) Besides enjoying the entertainment provided, I presented my 20 minute stand up act (packs small and plays big) to a late night audience. Next stop Louisville Kentucky and another presentation. We are certainly seeing a lot of the mid west of America by road and I can tell you a lot about sweet corn, Soya bean farming and cash crops! ----------------- 5. What's In A Name? ----------------- Message from Walter Zaney Blaney (US) Dear friends in magic: I have two very good friends named Gerry and Leonora Frenette in Canada. They have a long established magic business named "Magic Makers Inc." Now there is a company in the USA who also uses the name "Magic Makers Inc.", established and run by Rob Stiff. Magicians quite naturally confuse the two. I believe it is unfair for someone to come into our magic field and use the same name of an established business which already had a very good reputation for years. It would be the same problem if some new company opened up using the name Abbotts, or Owens Magic Supreme. I understand that Mr. Stiff said he was unaware of the Magic Makers Inc. in Canada. Yet when he learned of its existence, he refused to change the same name he took up. The Frenettes established their Magic Makers in 1986 and first advertised in the Linking Ring that year. They soon were placing ads in Magic Magazine (colored ads), Genii, MUM, The Illusionist, as well as continuing their ads in The Linking Ring. So it would be difficult for anyone to claim they were unaware of the Magic Makers company already established in our business. The Frenettes first heard of the new Magic Makers around or after 1999. In that year the Frenettes had a great deal of good publicity, articles, stories and reviews in most of the magic magazines. They create and build their own proprietary illusions, along with custom design and standard illusions, and they sell direct-only to their many customers. This is not meant to be an "ad" for my friends the Frenettes. But the confusion caused by the "other Magic Makers Inc." is hurtful to them in more ways than one. I only wanted to point out to friends who may be unaware of what I deem to be an unfair situation. Cheers, Walter Zaney Blaney ----------------- 6. Why Are Those Guys Not Telling? Time flies, and here at MAGIC Live central, as the convention grows closer and closer we're getting more and more excited. The line-up of talent is awesome with some of the greatest names in magic lecturing, performing and socializing for and with you. Who, you ask? Can you keep a secret...? You know the standard reply to that last question, and with us it's no different. For the same reason: telling the secret spoils the surprise and takes away the magic. We sincerely believe that mystery is a big part of magic, and we want MAGIC Live! To be not just a magic convention but a magical convention. As you sit there in the audience, you'll have no idea who is about to step out on that stage... Intriguing, isn't it? The Magic Live! Close-Up Experience & "Talk About Tricks" Live And Close-Up! Speaking of intriguing, we here at MAGIC Live! have reconceived the way close-up magic is presented at a convention. If you like close-up magic you will love the MAGIC Live! "Close-Up Experience." Not only will you have a chance to see five of the top names in magic perform in a unique setting, but you'll have a chance to "Talk About Tricks" with Joshua Jay and friends as they hang out in the Hospitality Suite, Tuesday night from 8:00 to Midnight, sharing some of the finest close-up magic you'll ever witness. Of course, the way the evening is designed, you can see our show and still have time to attend one of the fantastic Las Vegas magic shows on the Strip! Have Lunch With Some Of The Top Stars Of Magic. Speaking of close up... You'll have a chance to get close up and personal with many of the top names in show business thanks to our newest feature, "Break-Out Sessions!" Here's how it works: After the morning sessions you'll have a chance to spend more time with some of our presenters in more intimate surroundings. Want to know more about kid's shows? Pick up your lunch from our convenient snack bar and take it to the children's show break-out room. There you can have your lunch while spending time with others who have a similar interest. Want to talk to an expert about designing your own web site? Choose that room instead. Ask as many questions as you wish! Want to go one-on-one to learn the details of handling a complex close-up trick, or perhaps your interests lie more in the area of learning some cool dove productions? Let the creators talk you through them move by move! These close-up, hands-on, magical lunch breaks are completely optional, of course, but you won't want to miss the opportunity to learn more and make new friends with those who share your interest! Sensational Sessions! Let's talk about Sessions... Our teaching "Sessions" begin at 9:30 a.m. and go until lunch, then begin again at 2:00 and go until 4:30. Over the course of the convention that's 15 hours of incredible magic lectures on everything from birds to business, creativity to close-up. That includes classic films, interviews, commentaries, comedy, history, lots of trick tutorials, and numerous priceless moments with over two dozen of today's top stars of magic! "The Best Stage Show I Ever Saw" The stage shows will also be unlike any you've seen before. The line-up is mind-boggling, the best of the best, in every style-cutting edge rising stars and old favorites. Illusion, birds, comedy, manipulation... all presented in the beautiful Orleans Theater. One day you may very well look back on it as the best show you ever saw. Why Magic Live! Is The Best Convention Bargain Of The Summer. Registration is only $285. Only, you ask? Yes! We realize that some folks have taken a look at that number and concluded that MAGIC Live! was more expensive than other magic conventions, but this, in fact, could not be further from the truth. Although registration is a bit more than the other magic conventions this summer, our special room rate at The Orleans is a fantastic money-saver. Four nights at The Orleans will only run you $196 ($49 per night). Total cost of registration and hotel: $481. And only $383 per person if you share a room! Compared to the combined registration and room rate of other major conventions, MAGIC Live! is the bargain of the summer! And wouldn't you rather your money went onto the stage rather than in some hotel's pocket? And don't forget, all lecture notes at MAGIC Live! are free! Last year it was a 76-page binder including photographs and bios of all 34 speakers. With the average cost of individual lecture notes around $15-20, that's quite a savings. We can also add that last time we gave away MAGIC portfolios, collector trading cards, a special collector's edition of the tenth anniversary issue, and a fortune in prizes redeemable at the dealer's booths. Now, we haven't finalized all our plans for this year, but we can tell you this: giving away stuff is fun and we do like to have fun! You could walk away with an armful! Speaking of giving away... Win Free Las Vegas Show Tickets. Every month we have a drawing for free tickets to Las Vegas magic shows. To be eligible you need only register. Names not drawn remain eligible for the next month. The sooner you register the more chances you have to win and the less competition you'll have. To be eligible for this month's drawing, register before the stroke of midnight July 14, 2004! How To Register. To register for MAGIC Live! Go to our website (www.magicmagazine.com) or simply call Kristee at (702) 798-0099, ext. 110. It's easy and registration is fully refundable up until July 22, 2004. The only risk you take is in not registering immediately: seating is strictly limited due to the size of the theater and we are well on our way to selling out! Remember, sign up before the stroke of midnight July 14, 2004, to get your name in the next drawing. We hope to see you there! ----------------- 10. Is Your Act Killing You - Steven S. Jodzio ----------------- Message from Steven S. Jodzio (US) My name is Steven S. Jodzio, USA, New Jersey, aka, Corkey the Clown, Baron the Magician, The Birdman, and DJ Steve. Oh yes, Talcum powder, I know this well. I not only never used a pump to blow up my 260Q balloons, (had three pumps), but when in clown face, I used to set my makeup with a sock full of powder. It never affected me much, but my wife who was Daisy the Clown, came down with a minor breathing problem. She had to stop clowning and couldn't stand the smell of powder. I would have to powder outside in my backyard, but even then she couldn't stand the aroma of the powder. Unfortunately what has side-lined me from performing after thirty years of fun was a stroke in 2000. I get around just fine, drive, but can't perform, and God I miss it so. I would recommend to all performers to use balloon pumps or use tattoos which is less dangerous for both performer and children, ever have a 260Q break when blowing up and it hits your eye, OUCH, so play it salt, pumps and or tattoos, even tell parents the hazard ----------------- 11. Is Your Act Killing You - Paul Kilshaw ----------------- Message from Paul Kilshaw (US) YES it is very evident in the Canadian circles of balloon afficinados as well as an acquired Latex allergy that has seemed to have cropped up, latex is not allowed in hospitals for this reason. I used to blow by mouth and was eventually hurting because of it when a senior clown lady, a nurse, warned me about the powder hazards especially with the amount I was making on a daily basis, plus the other problems that can occur I blew air into the lining of my cheeks as well. A condition called pop corn face hurt like hell for a while .. and if one would continue this you might end up with cheeks like Louis Armstrong, or Dizzy Gillispie , I need help enough with my looks;) I bought a great pump called the Balloon Bouy, Rechargeable Portable and very small small camera type case. Inflate in less than three seconds and makes about 400 puppys size balloons on a single charge and charges up in less than an hour. I wish our Friend all the best for a speedy recovery Yours in the Craft Paul Kilshaw # 183 the Ernie Crockford Ring Victoria Magic Circle ----------------- 12. Greatly Appreciated And A BIG Thank You ----------------- Message from Trevor C. Yates (South Africa) The response was greatly appreciated and a fellow Magi found an old script explaining the tube from a magazine dated 1956? (Isn’t it nice to have squirrel magicians who do not throw away a thing, especially old scripts and manuscripts?) Again my thanks to you for a fantastic letter each week, and to George Key, The FAB Magic Company, Shad Rutherford, Peter Warby, and Paul Daniels. Each one gave some new angle about the trick – Thank you to all. ----------------- 16. Mystery Of The Two Of Hearts - Jamie-G ----------------- Message from Jamie-G (Canada) Effect - Three cards are shown. We will say that there are two nine of clubs and one two of hearts. You are showing two nine's with the two in the middle. The two is removed and placed on the table. When you turn the cards over you see both the nine's but when you turn the card over that was on the table it is now the ten of diamonds. Props - one ten of diamonds, one nine of clubs and a nine of clubs with a two of hearts strip down one side of it. The two should have a flap in it. Set-Up - when you are setting up the card they should look like this. Your nine of clubs with the two of hearts flap, your ten of diamond behind the two and the other nine of clubs in on top of the two covering the ten and not showing the crease in the two. When showing the cards it would look like you only have two nine's and one two. The ten should not be showing. Method - Show your spectator your three cards. Face the cards towards you and tell them that you are going to take out the middle card. This would be the two of hearts. Place this card on the table face down. Next you are going to close the two nines together and flip the cards upside down. You tell your spectator that the two of hearts should be on the table. When you turn the card over it is actually the ten of diamonds. When you spread the cards open in your hand you should only see the two nines. The two of hearts has now vanished. ----------------- 16. The Amazing Orchante Update ----------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) Hello everyone. Well I finally feel like I'm on the mend. The surgeons told me that it would be at least 3 - 4 months before I felt any benefit, if at all, as the operation, even though it was successful, does not guarantee that my breathing would be any better. Well the good news is that in the last day or two I have been able to take in a fairly deep breath, and blow it out again, which is quite remarkable considering the above 3-4 month factor! It feels rather strange, as it has been around 6 -7 years since I've been able to breathe normally, and even then, it has only been the various drugs and a nebuliser that has kept me alive these past few years. I don't know if you are aware, but the operation, although successful, DOES NOT 'cure' the disease; emphysema is incurable, but the operation does give me a few more years of 'QUALITY OF LIFE', anywhere from five to maybe ten years, then the disease reverts back to where it was, and that's my lot! Still, I'm very grateful to 'The Powers That Be', that I was among the fortunate few that was in the position to have this most radical operation in the first place, and that I was also amongst the fortunate few who managed to survive it! Mind you, I had a hell of a lot going for me. I was, and am, overwhelmed by the 'Prayers, Good Wishes etc. etc.etc. that I received, via e-mail, from fellow magicians (and friends) from all over the world! Many whom I have never heard of, many that I have heard of - some are household names but have never met and magical friends whom I haven't seen for many, many years. I received get well messages from some who are suffering from terrible diseases in their own right - one is in such a bad state that I cried my eyes out; this wonderful human being found the time to wish ME well! May YOUR 'God' bless YOU Jamie - G! I intend to reply to all who contacted me but, because there is a chance that some e-mail addresses may have been accidentally deleted, I would like to thank all of you now, via Alan Watson's 'Magic New Zealand e-zine'. Although I have always had a very strong, 'Positive Attitude' towards most things in my life, I'm quite sure that all the 'Good Vibes' , Prayers and Good Wishes that were sent my way have played a BIG part in my recovery. MAY YOUR GOD, OR WHATEVER, GO WITH YOU! The names are in no particular order, that way you don't offend anyone! Finally, Burns (Delarno) Scandrett, (my old mate from the year 'I don't know'), and I have spent the last few months cheering each other up via e-mails, each telling the other that "Your up - coming operation will be far worse than mine" etc. Well Burns, WE HAVE BOTH COME OUT OKAY BUT - YOU WIN - YOUR SCAR IS MUCH BIGGER THAN MINE, but then, I had TWO top surgeons on the job! Luv ya mate. Thanks again to everyone for caring - next week I'll tell you an amusing story about my driving some nurses crazy during my hospital stay; never trust a magician, not even a sick one!
