Editors Message ------------------- Message from Alan Watson - The Magic One Congratulations to David Sandy International President IBM and his executive team. The IBM Convention in Reno 2005 has been brought forward by 1 week so that it does not clash with the SAM Convention next year in Boston. Read David Sandy press release – refer item 2. After publishing in the Magic New Zealand e-zine on March 14th Issue 241: “VERY disappointed to read in the March issue of ‘Magic’ magazine that both the IBM and SAM conventions in 2005 have been scheduled at the same time IBM 5-9 July and SAM 6-9 July.” I received 276 messages as Editor of the Magic New Zealand e-zine regarding the above subject. A third of the messages were .com the balance were from New Zealand, Australia, England and a number of European countries who are upset with both conventions being scheduled on the same dates. There were also a number of dealers who voiced their concerns. ------------------------- Received more than 200 messages from all over the world paying tribute to the sad loss of Tony Shelley. Tony certainly touched the lives of so many and was deeply respected within the magic fraternity. ---------------- Remember if you have any magic news drop me a line: AW@Alan-Watson.com ----------------- 2. 2005 Annual I.B.M. International Convention Rescheduled ----------------- Message from Tony Wilson (NZ) On behalf of the International Brotherhood of Magicians and the I.B.M. Convention Committee, I am very pleased to announce that we have rescheduled our 2005 annual International Convention dates in order to avoid a conflict of dates with the Society of American Magicians’ annual gathering. We had previously committed to hold our annual convention at the Reno Hilton in Reno, Nevada on July 6-9, 2005. A couple of months ago, we learned that our sister organization, the Society of American Magicians, had later signed papers to hold their convention in Boston, Massachusetts on those same dates in order to get the most favorable rates for SAM members and convention registrants. Because we want IBM members all over the world to have the opportunity to support both of these extraordinary conventions next year, we re-negotiated our contract with Reno to hold our convention a week earlier on June 28-July 2, 2005. We encourage magicians everywhere to support both organizations by attending both of these fun-filled conventions in 2005. We hope to see you all at this year's IBM Convention to be held in Cleveland on June 29 through July 3, 2004. Visit our website at www.magician.org for complete information! Best, David Sandy International President International Brotherhood of Magicians ----------------- 3. Tony Shelley Tribute - David Sandy ----------------- Message from David Sandy (US) Hello all, It was with an unbelievable amount of sadness that I received the news that our friend Tony Shelley has passed away. I'm still in shock... I just cannot believe it. Since I've been travelling over the last few days, I appreciate all of you who emailed and kept me informed. I know this goes without saying... but Tony was truly a wonderful, wonderful man. Ever since I became involved in the IBM, he has been one of my strongest supporters. I could ALWAYS count on heartfelt encouragement and kind words from him... and I knew it was always 100% genuine and sincere. He never, ever, let me down. During my trips to the UK, he and Boon always went out of their way to make my visits enjoyable and problem-free. He would call or email a couple of times a month just to ask "how are you doing?" I know that he went to this extra effort simply because he cared. Tony was more than a "brother" in this brotherhood of magic... he was a dear friend... and I'll miss him so very much. "During NBC's annual presentation of its new fall line-up Monday, magician Roy Horn made his first public appearance since his October 2003 mauling by a tiger. Horn appeared via satellite to an audience of advertisers in New York to discuss an animated series about the animals on Siegfried and Roy's Las Vegas show. "Father of the Pride" will take over the "Frasier" time slot at 9 p.m. Tuesday. The animated series is about lions that perform in Siegfried and Roy's stage show, as well as other animals living with the pair's Las Vegas complex. Horn had glasses on, wore a short haircut and didn't move his left arm during the interview. But Horn spoke often and made several jokes about the series, as he and Fischbacher sat in chairs. Both briefly acknowledged the miracle of his recovery during the interview. Zucker also said Horn would be appearing this fall on NBC to discuss his accident and recovery in detail." ----------------- 9. Portal Appearance & Magic Crafters ----------------- Message from Don Drake (US) I am writing this notice to tell everyone that I no longer have any connection with Magic Crafters (Ross Horowitz) of Tucson AZ, and his 'invention' The Portal Appearance. Due to the fact that Mr. Horrowitz manufactured a product that was not up to my standards, and also due to the fact that he has ignored all e-mails and phone calls, I hereby state that I will not be associated with Magic Crafters nor any of their products. If any of you have purchased the Portal Appearance and are dis-satisfied with the product, the number of Magic Crafters is 1-800-266-4800. If you get an answering device, you may not get a return call. Also if you purchased the Portal Appearance prior to February 2004, and I sold it to you, I will send you my new DVD absolutely free of charge when it is finished (around the end of June, 2004). The reason for this is that I performed the Portal at the beginning of the DVD and it teaches a simple way to do the trick, without any elaboration. Thanks for your time. On a positive note: I will be going into the hospital on May 28 for some spinal surgery and will not be able to get my e-mail for about two weeks from May 28 to about June 12 - 14 dates approximate. If you wish to contact me between those dates it will take a while to answer. Thanks so much for your patience, and thanks to all my customers, friends and supporters out there in magicland. The Magic Appearing Pencil-By: Jamie-G ----------------- Message from Jamie-G (Canada) The Magic Appearing Pencil-By: Jamie-G Effect: The magician show's a silk front to back to the spectators. With just a wave of his hand the magician then produces a colourful pencil from the empty silk. The magician then gives the pencil to one of the children that are watching in the show. Note: This is part of the "GIVE AWAY STYLE MAGIC" that I have been doing as a project for a few months now. I have found that when you give the object that you produce to the child and then you tell them that they now have the magic this makes your magic more powerful. Also this makes the child very happy and they will remember you as a magician for the rest of there lives. We must remember that these children have birthday parties. Method: Just before the show I load the pencil right down in my paints and my belt holds the pencil in place. I show the silk from front to back and that there is nothing in the silk. At that point the silk hangs down in front of my pants then I can grab the top of the pencil threw the silk and pull the pencil out and now the pencil is inside the silk. (The silk is hiding the pencil) I then turn the silk up wards and push the pencil out and it looks like you just produced the pencil by magic. It doesn't matter if your right handed or left handed when your hand goes down to grab the top of the pencil the other hand reaches into the air and you pretend to grab some magic from the air and put it into the silk and this is where the magic comes from. Also it will help if you look surprised when this is all going on and the most important part is when you give the pencil to the child. It is the birthday child or a special child in the show that is watching. Tip: You can get these pencils at the dollar store for 12 pencils for a dollar. I can't see what a better way to put a smile on a child’s face then with magic. I know that this give away style magic works and that when the child gets the magic object that they are on top of the world and that they just can't believe that they now have the magic. Try this and see for yourself. This is a cheap way to do some awesome magic. Extra: I also do an effect very close to this were I change a small pencil into a long bendable pencil. There are just a few adjustments but it’s pretty well the same effect. I always carry a pocket full of things from the dollar store that I can use for my magic and that can be given away to a child. Some examples are:  1.Gold nuggets  2.Little plastic rings  3.pencils  4.little metal cars (metal and plastic ones)  5.Little deck of cards (smallest deck of cards in the world.) Your give always can be pretty well any thing as long as there are in with a magic effect. You will notice that some thing small can go a long way and it will make you as a magician look good, keep the children happy and it only cost you pennies. Also once the children see that they might get something you will not have any problems getting helpers even if you just do one give away they don't know if you are going to give any more. ----------------- 16. The Amazing Orchante Saga ----------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) Page 25 Fiery Flett I have a four-inch scar on my right arm, the result of a News reporter ‘roasting’ it himself, with one of my torches – trying to prove that I was a fake. Hypnosis controlled the pain, but of course, the skin still burnt, eventually. This reporter in fact wound up giving me a good review, and I can’t think of a better way to finish this episode, than to quote his review, word for word. It is from the Auckland Star’s 8 O’clock News and Features, Sat June 23rd 1973. Headed: ‘Eating Out With Fiery Flett’ Quote; ‘I USED to think there was a trick to most stage acts – until I tried fire eating. It was when the flaming torch was level with my teeth that it suddenly dawned on me that there was no trick to the art. Now I won’t have to shave for a month and I’ve a permanent 5 o’clock shadow of charcoal. Auckland fire-eater, hypnotist, magician and sword Swallower Orchanté showed me this week how to do it. He swallowed two burning tapers – held the fire in his throat, then re-lit them by blowing out. He let me hold a burning taper under his forearm, he didn’t mind, and I swear there was no trick attached. He swallowed a 3 ft chrome sword, ran flaming sticks across his stomach, and then, lying on a bed of nails, placed another bed on his chest and asked two men to jump on it. Unlike some similar acts, the nails were all sharp enough to draw blood. He claims he does it with self-hypnosis. Well, if he could do it, I could…. The 30 year-old entertainer handed me a taper dipped in white spirit and showed me how to hold my mouth. I should have held my mouth three hours earlier when the editor handed out the job. Flames The flames from the taper flared about 18in into the air, blackening the ceiling in the process. I tilted back my head, opened my mouth, and tentatively poked the flaming mass towards my face. Only the smell of burning eyebrow made me stop. Then I tried again. The torch was lower this time and it passed lips, singing off excess skin, and reached my teeth. If you’ve ever held a burning torch against your teeth, you’ll know how it felt. That’s when I decide there was no future in fire eating. But Orchanté does that much and more. He plunges flaming torches into his mouth and closes his lips around them. His head, lights up like a Chinese lantern. Personally, I prefer eating crepes-suzette. Unquote. ------------------ 17.
