Editor's Message ------------------- Message from Alan Watson - The Magic One Message from Paul Daniels (UK) I am selling stuff on Ebay, but I keep getting emails, mostly from the USA but also from other countries, from magicians who say I have nothing on there. I think the problem is that some people don't realise that each country has its own suffix or web address ending. Most of America ends in .com but in the UK we end in .co.uk. I know that Spain ends in .es and Italy is .it and so on. So, to find my stuff, it is best to go to www.ebay.co.uk and then search for Paul Daniels. That should get you there. ------------------------------- Message from The Amazing Orchante On Tuesday, BBC Radio 4 did a half hour program with Debbie Mc Gee called 'BOX JUMPERS. If you log onto www.bbc.co.uk/radio4 and then click onto the box that says 'LISTEN AGAIN', then scroll down to BOX JUMPERS, under B - obviously, you will be able to hear it. ---------------- Remember [FIRSTNAME] if you have any magic news drop me a line: AW@Alan-Watson.com ----------------- 2. Substitution Trunk Exposure ----------------- Message from Magic Christian (Vienna) I am very concerned about the Houdini museum's attitude to expose tricks, specially the Escape or Substitution Trunk. Is there no chance to sue them in the court for ruining the professional career of many magicians? There must be a possibility to get it to the court. In the USA there were other less valuable cases at the court for millions of dollars. Anyway thank you for bringing it to ourattention. Here in Europe we do not hear about things often except we go to the different chat rooms and info. ----------------- 6. The European Magic Festival Jaromer 2004 ----------------- Message from Jahn Gallo (Sweden) Dear friends of modern magic, Czech Republic has entered an important stage of its history – members of the European Union will accept Czech Republic into their family as an equal partner this spring of 2004. For us, this is a unique opportunity to invite all enthusiasts of the art of magic and other guests from all the European countries to visit our country and to participate in our festival. This festival will not only be a celebration of magic and folk culture, but also a celebration of mutual understanding and friendship. We are bringing up, at this special occasion, a name of Mr. M. S. Patrcka (1787-1838), an extraordinary personality that is believed to be a founder of the first theatre of magic arts in Europe. We are proposing that the community of European magicians officially recognizes Mr. Patrcka as their patron. We are meeting in the historical town of Jaromer also because where Mr. Patrcka’s last resting place and his monument are. Hence, Jaromer’s festival will also be a symbolic assembly of all who love the magic. We are offering to participants four days filled with the magic, concerts, street theatre, exhibitions, visits to historic sites, meetings of fakirs, etc. During these four days, the Mayor of Jaromer will hand over the town to magicians and the magic. Accept our sincere invitation to visit us in Czech Republic, the Heart of Europe, be welcome in the ancient town of Jaromer. We are awaiting you with open arms. The art of magic is part of the folk culture. One cannot treat as a narrowly defined genre of art. The program of the festival will consist not only of the magic shows, the performances of artists and entertainers and fakirs, but it will also offer concerts, theatre spectacles, visits of art galleries and the local historic sites and monuments. The collection of these events, visits, meetings will let you leave with unforgettable impressions and memories, with the new understanding and new friendships. There is a heated swimming pool in town; we are offering variety of aerial and bus sightseeing trips, horseback riding at a neighbourhood farm, golf, etc. There are some memorable sites at our vicinity – a military fortress Josefov, historic castles, world renowned Bethlehem made entirely of wood, the zoo-safari at Dvur Kralove, water dam Rozkos, sand stone rock region of Adrspach, Eagle mountains, Krkonose, etc. Why not to postpone your departure from our region and from Czech Republic? Stay longer and allow yourself several days of a wonderful holiday. Tell us, we shall ask a selected travel agency to look after your needs. Enjoy your stay – pass unforgettable days at our home. 'Malini Egg Bag' ----------------- Message from Tom Orchard (Orchanté) Enjoyed reading the review of Paul Daniels ‘Malini Show’ in London, a couple of weeks ago even though it was written by his wife - a sure-fire way to guarantee a great write-up of ones self. Wish I had thought of that when I was working - but then again, Veronica would write what she wanted, regardless of what I thought. She doesn’t believe in ‘innocent white lies’, no matter what. I have Two Malini egg bags. When we were working in Shanghai many years ago, Veronica specially went shopping for the 'Real Chinese Silk ', of the correct weight for the 'Malini Method' to work flawlessly, and made the bags for me. The few magicians who have seen them damn near salivate like hungry dogs – offering all sorts of money for one of them. I consider the 'Malini Egg Bag' to be the best there is and, I can guarantee that there is NOT another 'Malini egg bag’ in the world to match mine for quality or practicality - they are beautifully made, by guess who! The commercially produced 'originals' are a joke compared to Veronica's. It is the hand picked, high grade Chinese Silk, and Veronica's extraordinary sewing skills and craftsmanship, which are the REAL MAGIC! Following a meeting with the surgeon last Tuesday week at the hospital, I am having my ‘Lung Volume Reduction Surgery’ in May, at Birmingham. IF (and it is a ‘Big IF’) all goes well, I will be able to breathe a hell of a lot better than I can now (They are even offering free accommodation for Veronica, as Birmingham is quite a ways from Doncaster). The biggest danger with this particular type of OP. is infection, which is considerably higher than other operations, because of the very nature of the operation, which is quite radical! The surgeon has warned me/us, that there IS a high risk of death but in his opinion, I stand a very good chance of pulling through. Okay, so I have put my ‘ Positive Thinking’ hat into ‘Top Gear’ (great title for a TV program – about cars maybe), and am bringing my self-hypnosis skills up to scratch, which I have let slip somewhat since retiring from performing - not by choice, I might casually warble (Retiring that is)! ----------------- 10. Re: The Golf Bag - Peter Marucci ----------------- Message from Peter Pinner (UK) ....... and an old standby, the Egg Bag. Okay, I had you on my side for a while but you turned on me when I mentioned the egg bag. Hey, there's nothing wrong with the egg bag! I do it and it always gets a good response. But why eggs? Who do you know who carries an egg around with him or her? What's the motivation? Where's the logic? ..................... I think the whole point of it is, that an egg is fragile. How could it withstand the "rough" treatment the bag receives ? ----------------- 15. Egg In Bag The Logic - Comments By Bev Bergeron ----------------- Message from Bev Bergeron (US) In the #245 issue Peter Marucci (Canada) said about the Egg Bag: “Hey, there's nothing wrong with the egg bag! I do it and it always gets a good response. But why eggs? Who do you know who carries an egg around with him or her? What's the motivation? Where's the logic?” Then he goes on and suggested that a golf ball is used instead of an egg. Many years ago – back to 1962, I did that. I was performing my comedy golf act and decided that I should have an audience participation bit to add more time to the act for places that required it. I had been using the egg bag design that Charlie Miller had shown me in 1959. Back then and until his death, we always argued over his calling it the Malini Bag. I said then and still say that it was the design of DeBiere. Because of my Golf Act I stopped using an egg and used a golf ball. I still finished with the production of a glass of booze. Well, it did not work as well. I put my weak brain to work and remembered the reason for the egg. Eggs break easily. That is why we use them. That is why DeBiere and others stopped using a wooden egg and used real eggs. Charlie Miller use to have a bowl of eggs on the table (they were blown eggs). After pointing out the eggs and the delicate nature of the items, he would have one selected and very carefully put it to use in the bag. When performing the egg bag most magicians pay no respect to the egg. You can roughly handle the bag and beat it about, but the egg should be handled like it’s an egg – it will break easily. Peter Marucci questions what is the logic of using an egg. And he is right. It is not the problem of the item being used to be justified in an act. It is the duty of the performer to “justify” what he is working with (Make it logical). When I was a teenager in magic, a Mr. Doug Snyder used to continually ask me “why.” “Why” did I do that? “Why” did I put that there? “Why” did I turn that way? As he said, “I must have a reason for doing what I was doing.” Later when I worked with an acting group that was credited as the number one “method acting group in Hollywood” (we did not like that tag) we were taught the teachings of the great acting coach of Russia, Stanislavsky. The great teacher did not use the word “why” he used “justification.” To paraphrase him: Every move one uses on the stage must be justified – no movement cannot be justified.” So what he was saying is that you must justify everything you do on the stage. In the case of performing magic, this really rings true. Tell the audience why you are using an egg. It breaks. Now that laws have been passed all over the world it is getting harder and harder for me to perform my old drunken/cigarette act – it required several lighted cigarettes to be used. I’m not a smoker so I could care less about others smoking or not. Several of my friends have said to do the act with unlighted cigarette. I could to that. But it will not impress an audience like a lighted cigarette. Why? Because in the audience mind they are thinking: How does he hide those lighted cigarettes? They don’t care about my production of unlighted ones. “Why” would I produce an unlighted cigarette? Well that is something for me to work on – if anyone has any suggestions, please pass them on. Appearing Red Rose - By Jamie-G ----------------- Message from Jamie-G (Canada) Effect: A magicians brings out a box of red rose tea. The magician reaches inside the box and pulls out a red rose tea bag. At this time the magician puts a nice red candle on the table and lights the candle. The magician than takes the red rose tea bag and touches it to the flame of the candle in a blink of an eye the tea bag is gone and in its place is a real red rose. Props: an appearing red rose, flash paper, Flash power, Flash string, an empty box of red rose tea and Flash paper glue. Note: If you can't find flash paper glue I use very thin layers of clear nail polish. Also you can get the appearing rose at your magic dealer. Construction Of Tea Bag: you have to basically make a tea bag out of all of your flash props. If you know what a tea bag looks like then it is going to be easy to make. You are going to make rectangular sheet. This, when folded will look like a square. Once you have made the square you are going to glue the sides together. Now you will have a pocket at the top of the bag to put your flash powder in. If you don't want to use flash powder then put some black pepper into the bag but very little that way it doesn't make a very big mess. Once you have done that then you are going to add your flash string to the bag. You take your flash string and glue one end slightly into the top of the tea bag and then glue everything shut. At the other end of your string you are going to add your red rose paper that you find at every end of the tea bag. Now you are almost ready to do the trick. Method: Everything should fit into the tea box. You will have this placed in or on your table. You are going to take out your candle and place it on your table. Light like you would normally do. You will fold up your rose in you hand. At the same time you are going to pull out your tea bag. Next you are going to carefully touch the tea bag to the candle and as it is burning then you are going to let your rose drop from your hand. Note: This effect is done to slow music for example "The Lady In Red" so make sure all your movements are slow as well. By having slower movements it will intertwine with the music and will look great. This would be a great effect for weddings followed by other rose and flower effects like the color changing rose and torch to rose and the dancing rose. The Amazing Orchante Saga ----------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) Page 11 The Wairoa College Incident! Several fads started up at College; one was the ‘Staring Without Blinking’ contest; teachers wondered what the hell was going on, classrooms full of ‘Zombies’ trying to ‘Outstare’ each other - of course it was my fault; everything was - admittedly I started it, part of my ‘Hypnotic Lessons’ – nobody beat me! Another ‘Craze’ started by the ‘Tough Boys’ (to prove they could ‘Take Pain’ like that weird Tommy Orchard), was to smash at full force their knuckles, apparently, on the top edge of tables; the resounding ‘Crack’ made everyone not ‘In The Know’ cringe; they should have been crippled, for life! The secret - just before your knuckles hit the table, you open your hand. It is your palm and fingers hitting the table that creates the awful ‘crack!’ As your arm swings on down, you quickly, close your fingers again. The illusion is perfect, try it some time, it doesn’t hurt - really! My answer to the ‘Toughies’ - Actually Do It - In the Centre of the Table! Looking back, I must have been bloody mad! Even though I would ‘kill’ the pain with self-hypnosis, I could still have done some permanent damage to my hand and my fingers. Very lucky! Very stupid! The other fad, which I didn’t start (honest), was to get someone to squat down, take 10 deep breaths then on the tenth one, they had to hold their breath and stand straight up. You, standing behind them, then placed your arms around their middle and squeezed tightly. Within 30 seconds, they would go utterly limp and become unconscious. You then lowered them gently to the ground, where they would lie, twitching like mad for a few seconds then, slowly come round. I can only describe the sensation as ‘Going under Anaesthetic ’ - your brain whirls like a Pinwheel then – Nothing! The next minute you come round and find yourself lying on the ground. Everyone was at it, taking turns to knock each other out. These fads all started in response to my ‘Hypnotic Antics’. Then the ‘Proverbial’ starts hitting the fan. I have some excellent hypnotic subjects, and I’m now trying out post-hypnotic a suggestion, that is, giving your hypnotised subject(s) a suggestion to carry out a particular action, at a signal from you, some time after they have woken up, and they have no conscious memory of having received any instructions from you. I’ve also acquired a brand new, hot off the press, book ‘The Eyes Have It’ by my hero ‘Franquin’ an Autobiography published 1957. (If you haven’t read it, try to get it from a Library. I promise you, you won’t be disappointed.) In it, he describes how, as a schoolboy at Wellington College, he got ‘Stuffy’ Logan to throw his inkwell at the blackboard. Methinks “I can do that!” I don’t remember who my hapless subject was, but we did have ink bottles so…at my signal, he stood up, bottle in hand, and fired it straight at the blackboard! It took off across the classroom like a rocket, heading for outer space. ‘BANG’! An eternity of shocked silence then - everybody, every eye, every finger, was pointing in my direction. When the ‘bizarre’ happened, you could bet that ‘Tommy Orchard’ was behind it, somehow! I’m marched off to the Headmaster’s office; a call was put through to my father in Raupunga…! For several weeks I’m a model pupil but, I’ve been ‘Bitten’ by the Magic, Fakir and Hypnotism ‘Bugs’, my very soul has been infected for life - I’m destined to be an Entertainer! One day after school, it happens! Somehow, an impromptu demonstration of hypnotism starts - just outside the school gates on the footpath. . My ‘audience’ swells, spills out onto the road, the traffic has been forced to a standstill! Tommy ‘the ‘Great?’ is ‘buried’ in the middle of a huge ‘bull-ring’ blissfully unaware of what’s happening outside of it. Then the headmaster, the teachers are all there - “What’s causing all the commotion?” “Oh, No - It’s That Tommy Orchard Again!” I’m marched off yet again to the Headmaster’s office; again, Dad is called - this time It’s Serious! Expulsion Hangs In The Air! It’s “Toe the line, young man - or else!” The incident hits ‘The Wairoa Star’ the local newspaper, and my name is in print - for the very first time. Don’t remember much after that, except that I earned one hell of a reputation and a hell of a ‘Sore Arse’ from my father. 'Continues next week' ------------------ 22.
