Roy Horn Starting To Walk ----------------- Message from David Neubauer (US) Siegfried and Roy's inner circle is abuzz with some heartening news: Roy Horn took two steps on his own over the weekend. It's encouraging progress in a comeback that started with his Dec. 22 return to Las Vegas from the UCLA Medical Center. Siegfried & Roy's manager, Bernie Yuman, without going into specifics, on Tuesday confirmed that Horn is "making huge strides" in rehabilitating his left side since the Oct. 3 white tiger attack at The Mirage. www.reviewjournal.com/lvrj_home/2004/Feb-11-Wed-2004/news/23196087.html ----------------- 3. Xtreme Close-Up Magic Moves To The Las Vegas Strip ----------------- Message from Steve Dacri (US) (February 14, 2004) Las Vegas only close-up magic show “Xtreme Close-up Magic”, now entering it’s 7th month starring the world’s greatest close-up magician, Steve Dacri and guest close-up magicians from around the world, is now located at O’Shea’s on the Strip. Additional shows have been added, including a daytime edition. Hailed by critics as “pure sleight of hand”, “hilarious magic that astounds” and “a real change of pace”, Steve Dacri and his family-friendly show has the town talking about his award-winning close-up magic. While at the Orleans since August 2003, the often sold-out show attracted many locals and International visitors, particularly from England and Ireland where Dacri has a large fan base among magicians. In its new home, the O’Shea’s Comedy Theater on the Las Vegas Strip, the show will now be able to accommodate a larger audience. Dacri commented, “We loved performing at the Orleans and we are eternally grateful for the opportunity they provided us to showcase our new concept. Unfortunately, the room was so small that we could only fit about 40 people. At O’Shea’s, the showroom holds 140, small by Vegas standards, but perfect for my type of magic, especially with their large screen video projection system which enables everyone to experience the magic.” Veteran producer John Stuart, who is also the manager of hypnotist Justin Trance (his popular, long-running show at the O’Shea’s Comedy Theater continues in its regular time slot), signed Dacri to an open-ended deal, and said he expects the show to become a permanent part of the Las Vegas entertainment scene. Dacri and Stuart, with the support of numerous celebrity magicians, are working on ambitious plans to transform the theater and the space around it into a magical, interactive environment. Dacri stated that he will continue with his concept of including guest magicians as part of the shows. During the previous six months, International magic stars from England, Ireland and Portugal have performed in the show, as well as a number of Vegas-based close-up artists. For more details, Contact: Jan Dacri, Show Manager 702-376-4727 Xtreme Close-up Magic O’Shea’s Comedy Theater Monday through Saturday - 7 pm (indefinitely) Beginning March 1 – 2 pm and 4 pm shows added Monday through Saturday (dark Sunday) All great seats, small, intimate showroom, limited to 100 seats per show. Another Cirque du Soleil spin-off is being fast-tracked to go into The Mirage as the successor to Siegfried & Roy in their former showroom. The replacement show "involves some of the biggest musical icons of the 20th century," sources say, and was in the works for another city until the Oct. 3 tiger attack that injured Roy Horn and ended the iconic production. The new show would be Cirque's fourth on the Strip; a fifth is being created for the MGM Grand, with a summer opening planned. Mac King has set a new world record for the longest game of telephone with 614 partici- pants at Harrah's Casino. Telephone is played by whispering the same message to the person next to you, and by the time the message gets back to the start, it's usually completely different than how it began. King began the game by passing the message "Mac King is a comedy magic genius" to magician Penn Gillette, the person next to him in line. From there, it passed through 612 other people, and ended up as the garbled message, "Macaroni cantaloupe knows the future." After the game, King surveyed the participants to find out some of the confused messages they passed along at various stages. They included "Mac King covers his nether regions"; "My king controls many regions"; and "My kid can know the future." Jeff Hobson's one-man variety show "Money And Madness Show" opens Monday at Excalibur. Headlining in his first one-man comedy variety show, Jeff is in the 400-seat Merlin's Theater at Excalibur. Priced at $29.95 plus tax, show times are at 10 p.m. daily except Fridays with an additional show on Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased by calling 597-7600. Hobson's "Money and Madness Show" contains adult themes and language. No one under the age of 18 will be admitted. Audience members 18 through 20 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. Hobson's show is full of stunts, comedy and skits. During the "Money and Madness Show," Hobson gives away hundreds of dollars to audience members who can withstand his wacky and zany antics. Hobson has been performing on the Strip since 1987, first starring in "Catch a Rising Star" at Bally's through 1990, and has most recently been the MC at "World's Greatest Magic Show" currently running at the Sahara. Houdini Days Magic Festival, Appleton, Wisconsin ----------------- Message from Walter Zaney Blaney Dear friends in magic: Due to the wrong perception by some that the Houdini Days Magic Festival in Appleton, Wisconsin is somehow connected with the OCHS (Outagamie County Historical Museum) Houdini Exhibit, which plans to expose the Metamorphosis illusion, I asked the Houdini Days Organizer, Chris Cochrane, to write a letter explaining the situation. I believe Chis has done an excellent job of setting the record straight. He and his volunteers should be heralded as some of the finest promoters of the magical arts in the nation. A letter from Chris Cochrane, Houdini Days Organizer The Houdini Days Magic Festival Is Not Supporting The Exposure Of The Metamorphosis Due to the numerous questions and comments that I have received, I feel that it is important that I provide this message to help clarify the complete distinction between the Houdini Days Magic Festival and the Outagamie County Historical Society (OCHS). I am very aware of the outrage that the magic community has expressed towards the OCHS regarding the exposure of the Metamorphosis. It is important that the magic community understand that Houdini Days has absolutely NO relationship with the OCHS. If you wish to express your views on their planned exhibit, please contact the Outagamie County Historical Society direct. The Houdini Days Magic Festival is a NON-PROFIT event that is focused on presenting outstanding magical performances to the general public with the intent of inspiring future generations of magicians. The Festival is being organized by VOLUNTEERS who are passionate about the magical arts. The Festival is NOT organized or funded by the city of Appleton or the OCHS. The outdoor performances are all FREE. All costs are covered through corporate and individual donations and sponsorships. The Festival creates enormous goodwill for the magic community within the general public. The extremely positive benefits of the Festival will help outweigh any damage that the OCHS may cause. It is more vital than ever that the Festival occurs and inspires the expected 20,000 people who will experience unbelievable magic from some of the world's greatest magicians. I have received suggestions from many people to NOT organize this years Houdini Days Magic Festival. Their rationale is that by eliminating the Festival this year, the OCHS will be hurt by the lack of visitors to Appleton and the negative economic impact that would result. This flawed logic would result in hurting magic even more by eliminating an outstanding event that does so much to support and promote the magical arts. It truely epitomizes the phrase "cutting off your nose to spite your face". It is very frustrating to try to organize this first-class magic event while others are using your creation as a pawn in their attempts to influence the OCHS. In striving to achieve our goal of inspiring the next generation of magician, we are excited to be able to offer three free Young Magicians Workshops taught by Mark Wilson, Michael Ammar, and Ice McDonald. These Workshops will assist the beginning magician in taking the next step in their journey in the magical arts. The Rising Stars of Magic Competition will provide recognition as well as cash awards, for the non-professional magician at the Festival. I have no doubt that the following performers at this years Festival will inspire future generations of magicians: Mark Wilson, Jeff McBride, Michael Ammar, Bill Malone, Doc Eason, Joshua Jay, Jon Stetson, Michael Finney, Tom Burgoon, Ice McDonald, Kevin King, Rex Sikes, Glen Gerard, David Kaye, Robert Baxt, Rondini, Dean Gunnarson, Mark Bond, Reed Sisters (Jessica, Shayna, Mandy), Danny Magic, Nate Nygren, Bruce Hetzler, Lou Lepore, and The Comedy Magic of Mike & Chris. The integrity and ethics of the magicians that will be performing at the Festival are all above reproach. I personally take offense at anyone who may bring this into question. Enough said. For more details about the Houdini Days Magic Festival, please see the website: www.houdinidays.com Thank you, Chris Cochrane Houdini Days Organizer ----------------- 9. Livermore Follies Sixth Edition ----------------- Message from Roy V. Porfido Livermore Follies Goes New Orleans is the sixth edition of the Livermore Follies produced by Roy’s Magic Camp in co-operation with the Rotary Club of Livermore Valley and the Livermore Police Department. Livermore Follies is a benefit show and 100 per cent of the proceeds goes directly to Bay Area Special Olympics. This year we have a New Orleans theme and in addition to top bay area magicians, this year we have the Blackbird Jazz Band, "San Francisco Sound" (a barbershop quartet), Jerry Barrilleaux & Reggie (a terrific vent act) and Tiffany's Dance Academy and Larry Kluger (juggler) round out the variety acts. As far a magic is concerned we have a remarkable up and coming professional Timothy James, Genny The Genie & Magical Mike, Bill Sparacino and The Flying Calamari Brothers. Livermore Follies will take place on Friday, February 20, 2004 at the Livermore High School Performing Arts theater, 600 Maple St., Livermore, California (San Francisco Bay Area). The time is 7:00 p.m. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children between the ages of 3-12. Under three is free. Six years ago an officer from the Livermore Police Department came to our Rotary club as the guest speaker. His topic was the participation of the police department with Special Olympics. I was so touched by his talk and the video he showed, that I approached him after meeting and said, “Let’s put on a variety show to raise some money for these folks.” And that is how it all started. Last year on stage I was presented with my five year strip and Livermore Police shoulder patch. I was told that it was tradition when an officer reached five years of service with the department, he/she was presented a five year strip. I was touched. These special folks who make up Special Olympics have been in my heart for over forty years but I didn’t know what I could do to help. Well, Livermore Follies is the answer for me. None of the performers receives a dime for their services. 100 per cent of the proceeds goes directly to Special Olympics. Our show next year (2005) will be Livermore Follies Salute to Vaudeville. If any of you are residents of the greater San Francisco Bay Area and would like to be a part of our Follies show next year, or if you know of a variety act in this area we can contact, please let us know. We are looking for acts that would fit a vaudeville theme. We are also looking for a staring act to close the show as well. Please let me know your thoughts and ideas. Magically and sincerely, Roy V. John George Lecture ----------------- Message from Eric Appel The John McNicholas Magician's Round Table Proudly Presents on Wednesday March 10, 2004 John George - International Champion of Magic John George's astounding close-up magic has made him a highly sought after entertainer for many fortune 500 companies. His incredibly visual magic coupled with his unique style and light hearted humor have also made John a favorite amongst the Hollywood rich and famous. His abilities as a prestidigitator are only surpassed by his abilities as a true entertainer. When John is not traveling the globe performing at exclusive events, he can be found frequently performing at the world famous Magic Castle in Hollywood California. In the magic community, John has won virtually every major close-up competition in the United States. John took first place at both the International Brotherhood of Magicians Gold Cups competition and the Society of American Magicians (S.A.M.) close-up competition. He has also received the Silver Medal of Merit from the S.A.M. The Silver Medal of Merit is an award that only a handful of other magicians have ever received. Most recently, during the 2002 S.A.M. Convention in New York, John received the coveted People's Choice Award. His lecture is a little bit different from most lectures. John begins by performing his multi-award winning close-up act. At the conclusion, John walks you through the act, revealing all the secrets and details that won him the first place awards at both the I.B.M. and S.A.M. annual conventions. Not only does John reveal the secrets, he also explains his thoughts on routining, audience management and misdirection. This gives you an invaluable insight into the mind of a creative an accomplished performer and the ideas discussed can be applied to make your own magic stronger and better. In the second half of his lecture, John discusses many of the effects that he performs walk-around. He teaches effects that can be found on his video and in his lecture notes. John's focus is on creating a real sense of magic for his audience. His effects are direct, easy to follow and most of all they elicit strong reactions from both lay people and magicians. This is a lecture not to miss. Doors open @ 7pm. Lectures starts @ 8pm. Cost is $15.00 for members, and $20.00 for non-members VFW Hall is @ 20 Pennsylvania RR Ave, Linden, N.J. (two blocks from the Linden RR Station) ----------------- 17. Appearing Red Rose-Too Music ----------------- Message from Jamie-G Body: Apart from my card melt, which everyone should give a chance even if your not into card or close up effects but for the fellowship and just to add something new to your magic close up case but not your "JUNK DRAWER" These effects I do put a lot of hard thinking and step by step and over and over practice it is almost like therapy. Trust me as I say I'm not trying to make a million dollars off the card melt I figure I would share it with fellow magicians novice and advanced, it is so hard today for magicians to learn magic plus the funny thing is I'm a stage and parlor magician mainly so it don't really hurt me at all anyway. I feel the magic should be new, awesome, and if possible never seen before (we all know how rare this is in magic we can all agree on this.) Here is a effect I have not put together yet its just in the works if any one would like to try it by all means do but it has to do with fire and if you are under 18 forget it unless you are under adult supervision I do not accept any responsibility if you get hurt. Appearing Red Rose- By Jamie-G Effect: A magicians brings out a box of red rose tea. The magician reaches inside the box and pulls out a red rose tea bag. At this time the magician puts a nice red candle on the table and lights the candle. The magician than takes the red rose tea bag and touches it to the flame of the candle in a blink of an eye the tea bag is gone and in its place is a real red rose. Props: an appearing red rose, flash paper, Flash power, Flash string, an empty box of red rose tea and Flash paper glue. NOTE: If you can't find flash paper glue I use very thin layers of clear nail polish. Also you can get the appearing rose at your magic dealer. Construction Of Tea Bag: you have to basically make a tea bag out of all of your flash props. If you know what a tea bag looks like then it is going to be easy to make. You are going to make rectangular sheet. This, when folded will look like a square. Once you have made the square you are going to glue the sides together. Now you will have a pocket at the top of the bag to put your flash powder in. If you don't want to use flash powder then just put some black pepper into the bag but very little that way it doesn't make a very big mess. Once you have done that then you are going to add your flash string to the bag. You take your flash string and glue one end slightly into the top of the tea bag and then glue everything shut. At the other end of your string you are going to add your red rose paper that you find at every end of the tea bag. Now you are almost ready to do the trick. Method: Everything should fit into the tea box. You will have this placed in or on your table. You are going to take out your candle and place it on your table. Light like you would normally do. You will fold up your rose in you hand. At the same time you are going to pull out your tea bag. Next you are going to carefully touch the tea bag to the candle and as it is burning then you are going to let your rose drop from your hand. Note: This effect is done to slow music for example "The Lady In Red" so make sure all your movements are slow as well. By having slower movements it will intertwine with the music and will look great. This would be a great effect for weddings followed by other rose and flower effects like the colour changing rose and torch to rose and the dancing rose. Special Note: I feel that this effect played with the right music can be a very moving and heartfelt effect the blend of fire and a little misdirection can create even a mood for love. I do feel that this is a great effect and should not be just passed by give it a try I promise you will love it. I'm trying my best to give you guys my very best I hope you enjoy it and thank you for giving this effect a try. . . . . . . . . . . JAMIE-G www.windsormagiccircle.homestead.com ----------------- 18. The Amazing Orchante Saga ----------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) Page 56 Some time between 5 and 6 o'clock in the morning, a small speck appeared on the horizon - it was an aeroplane; it flew over circling around our becalmed fishing launch two or three times as we waved frantically, the pilot waved back then, waggling the wings of his aircraft, then flew off and vanished over the distant horizon. An hour or so later another speck appeared - it was the coastguard; we discovered later that they had been out all night searching for us all through the storm. They had actually given us up for “lost, drowned at sea” and it was just sheer luck that the pilot of the search aircraft had done a much wider, final sweep and spotted us - we were a long way farther out to sea then anybody had imagined. They got us on board the coastguard cutter; the crew gave us blankets, a meal, and hot drinks. With the launch in tow, we headed back to the port of Papeete. This terrifying ordeal has haunted me all my life. Also, it was one of those rare occasions when I didn't get copies the newspaper coverage of this unforeseen misadventure. It amazes me today, because it was front-page news, especially so because I was a visiting entertainer; my name, and posters were all over the place, including advertisements in the papers. The company who owned the launch were prosecuted! Their irresponsible behaviour and total lack of safety precautions, of putting a man in charge of a fishing boat (and of our lives), who could not speak English, and didn’t know use a marine radio, was outrageous. Neither could he navigate, which is quite an insult to his race; South Pacific Islanders as renowned as navigators - they sailed all over the south sea ocean, populating the various islands; they found and colonized New Zealand! Our so-called “captain”, would have been more at home paddling a simple canoe and catching fish for his family! Hubert Wayliff, the promoter who had booked me, cancelled three shows and took me to his home (a two-storey, open-plan house and thatched roof, in the Tahitian style, and right on a private beach) “to chill out, get drunk and recover” - I did all three! Isn’t it strange how you can remember the ‘silliest’ things? Hubert had just received a copy of the long-playing record (vinyl, for those of you who have only heard of CD’s), from the musical “Hair”, which was all the rage in America and London at the time; I can still hear it blasting out from his fantastic stereo sound system - for three solid days. These days, I blast it out of my ‘fantastic’ surround sound system! Ahhh, the Memories! This has been one hell of a long narrative but, as I said at the beginning, it was a terrifying, frightening ordeal under the most violent and atrocious of conditions. I have had to ‘dig deep’ and expose emotions, that normally one keeps hidden, to try to express the full import of what happened. Now, 32 years on, the memory of it all still affects me emotionally, and can at times leave me, a 58 year-old man (this was written in 2001) blubbering like a baby! On page 53 of this episode, in the last paragraph, I wrote; quote, ‘…we guessed he (the ‘captain’) wanted us to throw the shark back - ‘No Way’, we all wanted some teeth, but why he was pointing up towards the sky was a total mystery; I being a New Zealander and part Maori, should have known better. I’ll explain later’. Unquote. Well, the ‘later’, is now! It is the custom in Polynesian culture when fishing, that the first fish caught is always thrown back - no exceptions. This ‘law’, is to appease the ‘Gods’ - if you do not - their wrath will fall upon you. When the Scandinavian caught the shark, we all helped to haul it on board, it was the first fish caught! We should have thrown it back – We Didn’t! THE WRATH OF ‘SOMETHING’, SURE FELL UPON US - we nearly paid with our lives; hence, the heading … ANGRY GODS! MAKE OF THAT, WHAT YOU WILL! ------------------ 19.
