Re: Boston Museum Exhibit "Exposure" ----------------- Message from Bruce Chadwick (US) Walter Blaney and I were talking the other day. He forwarded me an e-mail regarding the complaint about the Boston museum exhibit "exposure." It does sound to me that someone, whether it was the museum or not, has indeed exposed one of the mirror principles in the newspaper, and of course this is not right. As magicians we must hold sacred the secrets of our art or our art ceases to exist. However, I am writing in defense of the "Magic: The Science of Illusion" exhibit in general. This is not a new museum exhibit. I know it was first exhibited in Los Angeles. From there it came to Fort Worth, Texas where I am from. I examined the exhibit in detail before I decided to endorse it. I found that the exhibit is very well done with contributions from a number of major magicians in our art. It upholds the principles of our art including secrecy, promotes magic as an illusionary art, and in general I feel promotes magic in an appropriate fashion. In fact, some of the magicians here in Fort Worth (myself included) did a magic show at the museum for special museum patrons to honor the exhibit on opening night. ----------------- 7. Museum In Appleton Proceeding With The Exposure ----------------- Message from Ron Lindberg Just wanted to let you know that despite all our efforts the Houdini Museum in Appleton is proceeding with the exposure of the sub trunk. I beg and plead with you, if the museum contacts you asking for a performance at any event they are associated with, turn them down and explain why. I know that to many of you a gig might be tempting to do but I hope you can hold your ground. Also, FYI, the museum is sending out renewal memberships for the museum. Please return the form with a note declining and explain why. Oh by the way the form comes in the monthly newsletter for the museum. In the newsletter they actually talk about Houdini's last will and how he wanted to have his secrets destroyed. Talk about a slap in the face!!! Jamie-G's Color Changing Deck-(Single Card) ----------------- Message from Jamie-G's EFFECT: Magician takes a red deck of bicycle playing cards and shows the spectator. He shows that all the cards are different and has the spectator choose a card from the deck. Next the magician has the spectator sign the card to remind him of what the card was. The magician next rubs the chosen card and shows it to the spectator, the card now has a blue back. The magician takes the chosen card and rubs it on the deck of cards and shows that the entire deck of cards is now a blue bicycle deck. PROPS: A deck of blue bicycle back cards, one red card and a empty red box of bicycle cards. METHOD: You start with the red card on the top of the deck. Place these cards face down inside the box. Now the whole point of this trick is to make sure that they see the red card. Take the cards out of the deck face down so that they see the red back of the top card. I start the routine by telling them that I only use red cards because blue decks are really bad luck. Fan the cards and show them that all the cards are different. This gives them the impression that they see all the cards but really they don't. From here you are going to show the spectator the front of the different card but the back of the red card at all times. This is called the Front View Hindu Shuffle. Take a few cards and drop them down in the palm of your hand. Flip the deck over that is left in your other hand and the red back will show. Make sure you show the red back and that your spectator see's it as well. Go through showing the deck this way until you get to the bottom of the deck. You tell them during this that you are going to change each card as you go through them. When you get to the last card you have to make sure that the red card is now at the top of the deck facing you. NOTE: Whenever I do the color changing deck I use the Joker of the red deck for this effect because I don't have to remove any blue cards from the deck. You can use any card you want but make sure you take out the blue one. Example if you are using the 10 of hearts then you have to take the 10 of hearts out of the blue deck. METHOD # 2: You are about to get the spectator to pick a card. Spread the cards out remembering not to show the back of the cards. It doesn't matter what card that they pick just remember to put the card they picked on top of your red backed card which is in our case the Joker. Say for example the spectator picks the 9 of clubs. You pull out the 9 of clubs and then place it on top of the Joker. From here you can say that you could have picked any of these cards and show them all again remembering not to show the back. Next you get the spectator to sign the card with permanent marker. From here you are going to double lift the 9 of clubs and the Joker. The reason for this is to show that the 9 of clubs has a red back. Just say that this is your card. Don't say that look your card has a red back. Place it back on the top of the deck. You are now going to ditch the joker. Tell the spectator all I have to do is rub the card like this. You give the card a little rub. Lift off the 9 of clubs and give it a little rub and ask the spectator if they notice the change. Slowly turn the card over to show them that the card has changes from a red back to a blue back. To change the entire deck place the 9 of clubs on top of the Joker and give it a little rub. Next you show that the entire decks of cards is now a blue deck. Make sure when you do this that when you get to the last few cards you don't show that the red back is there. This could be a very powerful trick when you do it the right way. ----------------- 11. The Amazing Orchante Saga, Vol. 2 - The Australian Years ----------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) Page 23 Another Adagio/ Dancer act which used Jon Doyle’s fitness studio, that we worked with quite often, were the ‘Duo Arabesque’- Marilla and Ibraham; she was Australian and he, Lebanese. “The bloody Arab” Marilla used to called him - fondly. It was strange how often we would work with the same act(s) in the various RSL’s, Leagues and other clubs, especially when you consider the vast number of clubs, and the seemingly limitless number of artistes, of all kinds, who were working the Sydney circuit. We became good friends with Marilla and Ibraham, particularly after we had both been booked by my old mate Gilbert Thong, to work in Noumea, New Caledonia for a couple of weeks. Gilbert, who hails from New Caledonia, was the promoter who gave me my first over-seas bookings around the South Pacific Islands, way back in the ‘dark ages’ (see pages - 31, 32 and 33 [were 23 and 24] of The Orchanté Saga, Vol. One). Like most Adagio artistes, Marilla and Ibraham would appear on-stage wearing a cloak and/or cape of some sort, then take it off with a flourish, to reveal quite skimpy costumes which showed off their physiques - the ‘Body Beautiful’; the very nature of this type of act demands it in any case. Both partners are always in fantastic shape (hence the continuous fitness and body sculpturing/training regimes) and, more often than not, the females, like their male counterparts, worked topless. This little exposé is to set the scene for an incident that had Marilla in tears. Gilbert decided to fly us out to a little Island situated off the East Coast of New Caledonia, miles out in the Pacific Ocean - Lifou Island, to perform our show/acts for the natives. Talk about being isolated from civilisation - and the hotel? The ‘rooms’ were several, typically native, round shaped grass bures, set-up in a compound; bunk style beds with mosquito nets - thank God, and the running water was strictly limited, so you had to try and do your No. 2’s and flush the toilet before it was shut off until the next morning, as were the generators that supplied the electricity! I guess that if you were used to doing the ‘nature walks’ bit, camping out in tents… etc. We weren’t! The show, held in a large tin shack, which also served as the local community centre, was absolutely jam-packed with happy, laughing, and excited natives, whose clothing looked like it had come, at best, from a jumble sale, at worst, a rubbish dump! At least they were wearing something! They used to run around naked until the early missionaries arrived; their Bible banging teachings changed practically all of the islands inhabitants throughout the South Pacific into Christians. I guess that in some ways, it had its benefits - they were no longer cannibals! On with the show. As Veronica and I had two different acts, we went on first - doing our magic show. At one stage, I got a little boy up to do the old vanishing lit cigarette in the handkerchief - I always borrowed my volunteers coat, it has a far bigger impact than a measly handkerchief. This little boy wasn't wearing a coat; he had on what seemed to be a brown coloured cardigan - that was until I asked him to take it off so that I could perform ‘The Magic’. As he removed it, it turned inside out, to reveal that it was, bright red! The outside ‘brown’ colour was - dirt! As I ‘vanished’ the cigarette, the cardigan kept trying to crawl away on it’s own volition. So did I! Then it was Marilla and Ibrahim’s turn to entertain the happy throng. As their background music came on, they strode out onto the floor (there was no stage), and removed their cloaks. Initially there was a hushed silence, then quiet giggling, as they start performing their various routines, which really was something quite beautiful to watch as Ibraham showed his strength with his one-arm lifts etc., with Marilla gracefully posing in a variety of positions. We could hear tittering from the audience virtually from the start of their act, but when some of the Adagio positions entailed Marilla doing the splits, the crowd started screaming with laughter. Neither of them could understand what was so funny but as the true professionals that they were, they carried on and finished their act. We didn’t know either, what had caused the laughter during their show, until Gilbert told us. It started practically from the time that Marilla dropped her cloak, because they could see her boobs; then, because of Marilla’s very skimpy G-String, they could, “See the white girls ‘thing”! Poor Marilla burst into tears of embarrassment, then anger, until she came to realise that the friendly natives on remote Pacific Islands just don't ‘see’ things quite the same way as mature, discerning audiences do, in sophisticated nightclubs etc. We came on once again to finish off the show, performing our signature ‘Fakir’ presentation: Fire Eating, Bed-of-Nails, Sword-Swallowing and the ‘String Thing’ (psychic surgery), during which another little incident occurred, which gave Marilla a great sense of ‘sweet revenge’ and satisfaction! ------------------ Magic New Zealand e-zine archives ------------------- Back issues of the Magic New Zealand e-zine go to: www.watson.co.nz/ezine.html Both the User Name and Password MUST be entered in lower case to gain access.
