The Edinburgh Festival - Paul Daniels ---------------------------------- Message from Paul Daniels (UK) The Edinburgh Festival is a celebration of the Arts during the month of August. The main theatres have ballet, opera, and serious drama. Also during this month they have book 'fests' and film 'fests' and, possibly the most wondrous of all, The Fringe. This hangs on the periphery of the 'proper' Arts and attracts absolutely every form of alternative and innovative entertainment you can ever imagine, and some that you would never dream of in your wildest nightmares. The streets are full of musicians and entertainers (we call them buskers) doing some of the most amazing and weird performances I have ever seen. I have never been anywhere more exciting, ever. As for myself, I have been performing twice nightly with two completely different shows. The first is my 'Audience with Paul Daniels', a comedy and magic interactive experience which lasts 1 hour and 40 minutes without an interval. The second, only 20 minutes later in a smaller, intimate venue, tells the story of Max Malini and I demonstrate his magic and that lasts an hour. The total 2 hours 40 minutes has been tiring, to say the least, especially as this summer month becomes a media feeding frenzy and I spend all day being interviewed by press, radio and TV. Thankfully the only bad reviews have been from those obviously ignorant of the magic scene and one was extremely critical of my non use of four letter words and bad language. That's a first! The other two contained 'facts' that simply were not true, so legal action is moving on those. Taxi drivers are passing on 'good reviews' that they get from their customers and also it is interesting how many people have read the bad ones and still come because they "don't believe newspapers any more." Malini, the new show for me, is developing all the time and I find myself putting more and more of the man into the presentation. If I get the opportunity to perform this piece more it may well turn into a totally acted performance. Upcoming Ebay Auction Act of Richard Ross ---------------------------------- Message from Tommy Wonder (Holland) I thought I drop you a line that Véronique Ross, the widow of Richard Ross will put the act of Richard Ross for sale on eBay. This auction of the act of Richard Ross will start on 2 September and will last 5 days. The address on Ebay will be sent to those who ask for a notification as soon as the act is placed there. On the site http://www.magicart.nl/sales/ one can ask for this notification of when the auction starts. We have also placed some pictures on that site which should answer some questions interested people may have. ---------------------------------- 4. Response to Secrets of Magic article, by Duncan Trillo ---------------------------------- Written by Joleene Pirson-Mace, PR and Marketing on behalf of Etienne Pradier MIMC (UK) I am writing from the offices of Etienne Pradier in response to the article written from Duncan Trillo about the show ‘Secrets of Magic’ screened on Saturday 2nd August, BBC1. I am writing the article solely for the reason that Etienne has many talents, but written English is not one of them. It is also important to note that the following opinions come solely from us, and we cannot speak on behalf of the other magicians involved in the programme. Now, as every self-respecting magician should know, there are two sides to every coin, and very often more. There are many highly revered magic tricks that have remained a mystery to the public, and will probably remain so for some time. The big question is - do they still baffle their audiences? Of course - but in a different way to what they did, say, 50 years ago. It would be patronising to suggest that they as naïve as they were before televised special effects came into place to really test the resources of the modern magician. Audiences these days are wise to the terms such as misdirection and sleight of hand. Wise to the terms, aware it is happening - but still they miss what is under their noses. The result of this - they are even more flummoxed by this chain of events. The key is in the words above - misdirection and sleight of hand. Let me give you an example. I have been in a room with Etienne and watched him, very artfully remove a ladies watch. This was done using the sponge ball technique. After revealing the watch inside a closed wallet, the lady, quite rightly was adamant that this would never happen again. Later on that same evening, she was once again presented with her watch from inside the wallet. He has used exactly the same technique, but through clever patter and performance, she once again had not noticed a thing. How did he manage to do this? Not an arrogant assumption, but through careful precision, and most importantly, a fervent aspiration to better himself and rise to the challenge. Participants of magic who are approached by magicians do so in the knowledge that they will be willingly lied to and deceived. That is where its popularity lies. It should be irrelevant whether they have seen a trick with a fake coin and false bottom. This would not phase a good magician. Especially not in the context that nothing has been revealed apart from a few sucker tricks, as well as some regurgitated magic that have been exposed many times over by previous performers. Secrets of Magic is for the public viewer, as is a magic performance. It is simply a vehicle to carry on the popularity of magic whilst tantalising the public with what most professionals should agree, is a thinly disguised magic trick. OK, maybe the amateur magician with a holdall full of props may be a little miffed at such revelations. Hopefully, it will force him to up his game a little. But realistically, who will these ‘revelations’ really affect? I hate to state the obvious, but how many magicians do you know who carry a spare man with them that they can hide under the table and kick when the need arises? If you do know any, I think you may be going to the wrong kind of club. Surely, the real future of magic is about moving forward, searching for new and original ways to baffle and amaze… Revealing some sucker tricks, which, in truth are no more secret that David Blaine’s ego will not devalue magic. What will truly devalue magic is giving magicians the belief that they can survive only on props and the regurgitated and diluted efforts of the Great’ s before them. Using only this and the hope of a sympathetic audience are what really give magic a bad name. Magic is about performance, and the trick is in the performance. It is also very personal to magicians, and is a great art that has been learnt and enjoyed by many. Truly great magic cannot be devalued or degraded by what realistically is a harmless family show. To say this would be in great detriment to such a historical power. Etienne personally has a huge respect for magic and the Magic Circle, and has been proud to represent them a number of times. He is a busy working magician with an average of thirty shows per month. He would never willingly and knowingly reveal any genuine magic methods because, as well as the reasons given, it would hugely jeopardise his own work. In his view, he has totally upheld the Object of the Society, and will continue to do so whilst still a member of the Magic Circle. ---------------------------------- 5. Attention All Children’s Entertainers ---------------------------------- Message from Quentin Reynolds APOLOGY From Quentin Reynolds Firstly an apology and then some exciting news for you. Last month in The Hague, I was honoured to be the first magician ever to lecture on Children’s Magic at a FISM Congress. I was booked to give two lectures, both at ten in the morning. At FISM no one goes to bed early! With such an early start I thought we’d be lucky to fill half the hall once, never mind twice. Much to my (and the organisers) surprise it was far more popular than we imagined. By 9.55 the hall was full to overflowing and the stewards had to close the doors because of fire regulations. Over one hundred were turned away. Word got round and the next day the hall was half full by 9.30 and the doors closed at 9.45. Unbelievable! Just as many were turned away, including many of my friends from the UK. They were coming in the coach that didn’t get to the Congress centre until 10am. I pleaded with the stewards to allow some of them to sneak in but they wouldn’t budge. Full is full. I offered to do another lecture but all the halls were already booked with other lecturers. To those who missed out, my sincere apologies. But I have some exciting news for you, whether you were at FISM or not. Just bear with me for another minute. At the lecture I demonstrated practically and simply how to: Double the laughter and reactions you already get in your children’s show How to create truly magical moments (something sadly neglected by many who concentrate more on shouting). How to create and build a solidly structured show. Get audible gasps of amazement from any age group. Give the children the feeling they have experienced a REAL magic show Develop the mindset that will allow you to charge the highest fees in your area. I’ve put together a twenty page report which (besides talking about the above points) explains how I was able to easily build an eight hour repertoire of top professional material, why popular effects like Farmyard Frolics, Elusive Rabbits and Run Rabbit Run were relegated to the back of the cupboard, why performing for an audience is so important even if you never charge a fee, why my lazy (two-hours a week) system of marketing brought in more, better and higher paid shows than when I did a lot of marketing. And much, much more. If you perform or are thinking of performing for children you need to get this report. More money is made every week by children’s entertainers than any other branch of the magic business, yet there is so little material available. Top children’s entertainers guard their routines and bits of business like they were the Crown Jewels. Well I’m now tipping my mitt, all my professional secrets gathered over the last thirty years. I retired from children’s shows in 1998 after nearly 10,000 performances. I taught these systems to three young magicians who had never done a show in their lives. They are now busy professional entertainers in Dublin where two of them have just bought houses, purely from their magic income - they don’t work at anything else (in a market where property has gone through the roof - the most basic starter home is the equivalent of $240,000). Because of my agreement with them, this report is not available in the Republic of Ireland. But it is available everywhere else to readers of Magic New Zealand and you can have it for FREE. Yes, you read that correctly. FREE. No charge, no stamp, nothing. Here’s what you have to do: Send me an email with your name and address: quentinr@btopenworld.com You can have it as an email attachment or in hard copy sent through the post. Just state which. ---------------------------------- 8. Kristoffer Olson - Awarded The S.A.M. College Scholarship ---------------------------------- Kristoffer Olson of Red Wing, MN, was awarded the Society of American Magicians College Scholarship, presented at the Society's Convention in Las Vegas in July 2003. The 20 year old received this financial aid to be put toward tuition and/or books. Mr. Olson is a junior at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities Campus, majoring in Theater Arts and minoring in business management and foreign studies. The Harry & Trudy Monti Scholarship award, part of the Society of American Magicians Magic Endowment Fund, was set up to provide assistance for young magicians who wish to attend college and desire to continue in a magic career after graduation. Scholarship criteria include that the recipient be registered in a curriculum containing courses in drama/theater and/or business and marketing, in addition to having demonstrated academic achievement and financial need. This is the second year Olson has received this scholarship. Mr. Olson has won numerous awards as a young magician, including the Houdini Club of Wisconsin Junior Award of Excellence and First place in their Escape Contest twice, as well as the International Brotherhood of Magicians Junior Stage Champion in 2000 in Buffalo, New York. This past year, in addition to regularly performing shows around the Midwest, Olson was a guest performer for Magicpalooza in Spokane, Washington and featured performer for the Alaska Magic Kids' show in Anchorage, Alaska. Palace Of Magic 2003 - Scotland ---------------------------------- Message from Lisa Richards Once upon a time in Scotland....Edinburgh magician Mark Fisken dreamed of creating an event celebrating the Art of Magic. And so, in August 2002, the Palace of Magic Festival was born, and the dream came true. Last weekend, the dream continued, as more than 2400 people converged upon the tiny village of Falkland, in the Kingdom of Fife, just north of Edinburgh. They came to experience the magic and wonder of the 2nd Palace of Magic Festival. Defying the Scottish tradition, the weather was gorgeous. Entering the gates of the spectacular Royal Palace of Falkland was almost like entering another world. Visitors were greeted by a host of colourful magical entertainers, including the Palace Wizard, and his real live Dragon. There was something for everyone with close-up, stage and illusion shows running throughout the day, strolling performers in and around the Palace and grounds, and balloon artists, jugglers, face painters, and displays of falconry. In all, more than 30 magicians and other magical entertainers came from far and wide to take part in this amazing event. Last year, Jay and I were honoured to be brought in as guest artists for the first Palace of Magic Festival. It proved such a success that it was made an annual event, and we joined the production team, bringing our own ideas, skills and abilities to the table. The decision was made early on to create a more fantasy themed event, much like a fairytale; far more in keeping with the atmosphere of a 14th century palace. And we all know that every magical palace needs a wizard. So, by blending mystical aspects of characters such as, Gandalf, Merlin and Dumbledore, and with the magic of make up, wig and costume, Mark was transformed into Kramus Nexifius, a two and a half thousand year old wizard. In the lead up to the festival, I am sure Mark wished he really did have the powers of a wizard. It is such a huge task to put on an event of this scale, he needed to be in many places at once. Many, many hours were spent preparing for this year's festival, and so many worked so hard to pull it all together. It is not realistic to note them all here, but needless to say, it was a tremendous team effort. A truly multidimensional event, the magic began on Thursday evening with a special, magician's-only gathering. We were privileged to see lectures by, not one, but two of magic's greats. Ali Bongo, as sharp as ever, surprised and entertained us with his distinct brand of magic and humour. After a short break, Pavel held us all spellbound with his incredible creations and professional presentation. Friday morning, we were pleasantly surprised to open the National newspaper and see a full page feature article about the Palace of Magic. This included a beautiful, oversized photo of Ali, Jay, and Kramus reflected in one of the ornamental ponds in the Palace grounds. This was to be only the first of a number of newspaper articles and national radio spots highlighting the event. A magical feat in itself, considering the sheer number of other shows going on at this time at the Edinburgh Festival. The Palace of Magic was opened officially on Friday night with a black tie dinner. Last year, the Circle of Palace Magicians was created; a unique Circle in which only those who perform at the Festival are eligible for membership. The Dinner was presented by President, Mark Fisken, Honourary President, Jay Scott Berry, and Patron, Ali Bongo, and attended by local dignitaries, performers and guest stars. New members to the Circle of Palace Magicians were presented with their certificates by the Lord Lieutenant, the official representative of the Queen. This year the Circle was officially recognised by the Scottish Association of Magical Societies and a presentation was made by Moira Fletcher. The dinner was also a chance to officially welcome and thank all those who give so generously of their time and energy. The event is presented by the National Trust for Scotland, as a fundraiser for Falkland Palace, so essentially all performers donate their services. It was a wonderful evening, rich with ceremony and full of magical entertainment. A wonderful start to the weekend. The public side of the Festival runs over two days, and includes a Gala Show on Saturday evening. And what a show! We had a lineup equal to any world class event. Ali Bongo was our MC, providing us all, performers and audience alike, with magic and mirth throughout the evening. My own fantasy character, Colombine, worked alongside Ali throughout the show, helping to introduce the performers using balloons, silks and ropes in somewhat of a Vaudeville style, with a Harlequin twist. Paul Dabeck, the Magic Circle's Young Magician of the Year 2003, opened the show with a wonderful energetic dove routine reminiscent of a young Lance Burton. Lewis Barlow, one of Scotland's top professionals presented a highly original card routine which left everyone amazed. Dutch magician, Flip closed the first half with his classic Flip Stick act. Silent, poetic and elegant. Opening the second half was Kramus Nexifius and his mind reading Dragon; searching for a worthy apprentice in the secret Arts of Magick. Pavel followed with his award winning rope act and Jay Scott Berry closed the show in graceful style performing a number of his original routines. I have to say, it was a wonderful evening and I feel somewhat in awe from the experience of working alongside some of the greats in magic. But the fun didn't stop there. Sunday morning, the magicians were up bright and early to experience the brilliance that is Flip, as he presented his outstanding lecture. Then, it was back into costume and off to the Palace as the show went on for the second day at the Palace of Magic Festival. It is difficult to describe the true scope of this event. Even through my own eyes as a performer, there is simply so much to experience. Try to imagine entertainers in every nook and cranny of the sprawling Palace grounds, in various rooms and chambers of the Palace itself, with such diverse activities as wand making, a History of Magic slide show, and all manner of magical and mystical folk running around. Trust me, you just have to see it to believe it. I feel extraordinarily privileged to be a part of something that appears well on its way to becoming the world's premier festival of magic. This year's event was a huge leap above last year's and next year's promises to be even better. Production meetings are already going on and planning has started for the Palace of Magic 2004....A Celebration of Wonder! Hope to see you there. Shapester's Magic Alphabet ---------------------------------- Message from Logan Austin (NZ Just writing to let people know that I am alive and well. I have been extremely busy these last three years in the development of my latest project - "Shapester's Magic Alphabet" - an interactive animated alphabet for young children. This alphabet uses my skills and knowledge as a balloon sculptor and magician to create an imaginative wonderland based on very simple forms and sounds. I hope to market this on CD ROM - so at present I am looking for someone capable of taking it to the world. I have entered it into the Best Awards - bestawards.co.nz - and have at present made it to the finals. I have to wait until the 4th September to find out how that one will go. Otherwise, I have a full time job at the Auckland University of Technology where I teach computer graphic design and digital media. Unfortunately Mister Twister has not had time to be out and about due to the huge amount of time both in the development of my alphabet and preparing for the new job. I apologise to all that I have not kept up with lately but Shapester's Magic Alphabet has taken thousands of hours to create and I have had to be very focused and committed to the task at hand. I currently have three domo letters an my website - magicalphabet.com magicalphabet.co.nz magicalphabet.org The files are quite large and you will require a Flash Player to view them but the wait is worth it! Instructions For Jamie-G's Foil System (Silver And Gold Foil) ---------------------------------- Message from Jamie Gilbert Handling The Foil (Preparation) First of all you cannot use a lighter to take the paper off the back of the foil. If you do that then you will remove the glue that is on the back of the foil. Take the foil and crumple it up into a small ball. Uncrumple it and then you slowly peel away the paper. The side that you just removed the paper from is the side with the glue so remember that when you go and put it on something. Put the glue side face down on anything that you are going to put the foil on and take a marker or pen or anything like that and rub it gently. The friction will cause the glue to stick to whatever it is. This foil will stick to anything. You can only use the foil from Canada. In the U.S. they use a different kind of glue so that you can't separate the paper from the foil. History Of Foil I saw a child making a tinfoil ball one time. He was collecting as much foil as he could that way he could make the ball bigger and bigger. I thought that it was cool on how all the foil would stick together the way it did. The ball was the size of a baseball and it was solid. I initially started to use the foil for card magic and then eventually coins. Today this foil can be used for almost any magic situations all you have to do is use your mind. I'm a member of Ring 2100 and there alone I have sent over 400 mailings of this foil system. This is by far a new door in close up magic. It is now a lot easier to make you own new awesome close up magic. I have been using this foil system for about 15 to 20 years now and still to this day in one form or another I use this foil system. Two tricks that come to mind is my magic C.D. burner and a trick that I call silvered. Examples Of Tricks That Can Be Done With The Silver Foil Examples of some tricks that you can use the silver foil with: #1.Turning a gold coin into a silver one #2.Turning a dime into a silver penny. #3.Melt metal right off of spoons and forks. #4.Magically make a coin so hot the coin starts to peal metal shavings. #5.Take a playing card and rub the face of it on a silver C.D. and the face of the card disappears. #6.Make a gold coin turn silver on one side. #7.Magically break down a coin to its molecular structure #8.Turn normal paper money into real silver bills. #9.Take a normal pop cap and turn it into a silver one. #10.Take a silver coin and make it melt though a piece of paper #11.Produce silver pennies out of the air. Examples Of Tricks That Can Be Done With The Gold Foil #1.Make a quarter turn gold by the wave of your hand. #2.Turn any silver coin into gold. #3.Take a playing card and put it face down on the table take your gold ring off and rub the playing card when you turn the card over the hole face of the card is now gold. #4.Melt a gold coin into a card. #5.Melt gold off anyone's jewellery. #6.Melt gold off a gold coin. #7.Melt a coin into liquid gold that make the gold move some where else #8.Make a paddle out of tongue depressors Make one side gold and the other side normal. Or if you make two of them you can make one side gold and one side silver for a cool new looking paddle. (show both sides silver or one side gold and the other side silver, or both sides gold) #9.A cool trick would be whatever coins you put in your hand the coins turn instantly turn into gold ones #10.Take a normal pen and when you pass the pen threw your hand once the pen comes out it is gold. NOTE: All you have to do is sit down and think about what you want to do in this effect. The best part about this foil is that if you take the paper off the right way the foil (after you start rubbing it to some thing) it will stick to all most anything. Also you must remember that it rubs right off too. So if you have some coins with this foil on it don't leave the coin in your pocket with other coins because your special coin will get scratched. Where Do You Get The Foil If you can't find any cigarette foil from any Canadian packs that will work and trust me not all foil does work get, a hold of me and I will send you out some foil that will get you started in a whole new world of close up magic. There are all kinds of new ideas out here lets go get them. The Amazing ‘Orchante’ Saga - Vol. Two - The Australian Years ---------------------------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) Page - 16 “Who’s a ‘Naughty Boy’ Then?” Well after my little (little?) detour I’m now back on the ‘Cocky’ trail again. For those of you who are wondering, “what the hell does he mean by ‘Cocky”, it is slang Down Under for a Sulphur Crested Cockatoo, often Parrots as well. For those of you who are now trying to figure out what I mean by ‘Down Under’, it is a term of expression for those of us who hail from, or live in New Zealand and Australia; rather obvious if you look at a globe of the world. And for those of you wondering why I have bothered to explain these slang words which are common to us; they mean nothing to those readers of my Saga who reside in many other regions of the world. Now they do! Choice - eh boy! Carrying on from the first paragraph on the preceding page, we got our first and newly acquired cockatoo home from the market and, full of excitement, opened the cage door - we didn’t want him to feel trapped. We sat, saying things like ‘Hello, Hello’, ‘Pretty Boy…’ and other inane mutterings. He perched, beadily eyeing us with what seemed like great disdain. Tired of waiting for something to happen, I finally got up and cautiously approached the cage. Attached to the sides of the cage were two large containers - water in one and sunflower seeds in the other, which are staple diet for cockatoos. Also wedged between the wires of the cage were a few pieces of cuttlefish bone. Trying to be clever, I wriggled a piece of cuttlefish, thinking that I would distract him while I got some seed from out of the dish. Think again! As my fingers groped in the dish he screamed and lunged at my hand - I jumped backwards in fright, a ‘Not Nice’ aroma? wafted around the room as I hastily counted my fingers, fully expecting to see one or two twitching on the floor. All I wanted was to show him that I was nice, friendly kind of chap, and offer him some seeds from my hand; all he wanted was my finger(s) or at least a chunk out of my hand! Bloody Bird! A week went by and he wouldn’t let us near him. He would wander around the floor and sort of fly around the room (with a partly clipped wing he couldn’t get far or gain much height), but he didn’t want a bar of us. A month or so goes by and nothing has changed, he hasn’t tamed down in the slightest he is still a wild, nasty piece of works. We could usually usher him into his cage if we wanted to go out - it was a place of refuge and food for him, and we could close the door of the cage. One day when we decided to go shopping, the little sod refused to get into his cage; finally we just gave up and left him to it, closed the front door and took off. We returned around three or four hours later. All was quiet and he was sitting in his cage - well and good, then we noticed the television, it had collapsed down onto one corner. It was one of those the old fashioned types that were supported by four wooden legs that screwed into the base of the TV, if you can remember back that far. Cockatoos are renowned for their destructive chewing abilities - they can munch their way through cage perches in no time at all - the television leg had no chance! Well that was the last straw. The bird had to go! Naively, we had gone to a huge open-air market stall to buy a cockatoo at ‘The Right Price’ - that in all probability had been illegally trapped, along with many others, from out of the Australian bush (unfortunately, a commonplace practice in Australia) by people who are after a ‘Quick Buck’ with little regard, if any whatsoever, towards wildlife. The birds are roughly handled and badly treated from the time of their capture to the day they are sold to unsuspecting ‘innocents’ like ourselves - it is little wonder that they remain wild and have absolutely no trust in humans. While on the subject of untamed birds, a few months later we heard about a chap who was known as ‘The Bird Man’ who had ‘a way’ with birds (the feathered kind - maybe the un-feathered as well, who knows) much like a ‘Horse Whisperer’. He worked at a huge pet shop out at Parramatta (a suburb of Sydney) - we just had to see this man work his particular ‘Magic’. It’s been many years now but I remember a long corridor with a massive indoor aviary at one end that was full of cockatoos. Wearing gloves, he got one out and put it on the floor; its yellow crest was up and it was screaming and hissing in rage. He took the long gloves off and using a long stick managed to coax the bird to climb onto it. Don’t ask me how, but in a matter of minutes that wild, screaming, ‘I’ll bite the hand off of any bugger who comes near me’ cockatoo, was sitting on his arm and letting him scratch it - in obvious pleasure and complete trust. When I asked him how he did it, he said he didn’t know, that he’d always had the ‘knack’! Whatever it was, he sure had it! It was a wonderful demonstration of - Pure, Natural M ------------------------------------- 20.
