Cabaret Show Lounge Wizard - Australia ---------------------------------- Message from Ross Skiffington (Aust) I am writing to let readers know I will be presenting my cabaret show Lounge Wizard at the Orange Civic Centre, New South Wales, on the 13th & 14th June. We are part of their subscription season and the show will be a theatre style presentation similar to when we presented it at the inaugural Cabaret Festival in Adelaide where it was declared "one of the hits." I have been doing re-writes and am putting in some new routines plus extra staging. I am really looking forward to doing it again. Also, on the 14th, we will be doing a performance of my children's play Patrick's Hat Trick. If any readers do attend please come and say hi. I will also be performing Lounge Wizard at the Clocktower Centre, Moonee Ponds in September on the 18th, 19th & 20th. And for those who missed out on the Bell Shakespeare's production of The Comedy of Errors, that I was in last year, discussions are underway to re-mount the production for touring in Australia and overseas. More details to follow. This way be off topic here but I was deeply saddened by the death of Nina Simone this week. She has been a part of my life since I was 14. I have every recording she ever made and was thrilled to learn that she was to head the bill at the inaugural Adelaide Cabaret Festival. I thought that at last I would get to meet her but sadly she just never turned up. I had seen her perform some years previously and she was astonishing. I was performing at the Aotea Centre in Auckland for a convention at that time and realised afterwards that she would have been in the same dressing room that I was using as she was going to be there the following week. I heard the radio announcement of her death at the same time as I was about to play one of her first recordings. Co-incidence can be amazing. ---------------------------------- 12. Michael Grandinetti - April/May Issue Of Primo ---------------------------------- Message from The Magic of Michael Grandinetti Michael Grandinetti Is Featured In The April-May Issue Of Primo, A National Italian-American Magazine Although known for feats of escape, when 25-year-old illusionist Michael Grandinetti was growing up, he could not escape the influence of a large Italian family. Michael’s heritage and magical career are featured in the March-April issue of PRIMO, a national Italian-American magazine. The three-page, full color feature article traces Michael’s career from his first performance during “show and tell” in Kindergarten to his recent television, radio, and stage appearances around the country, including Entertainment Tonight and NBC’s “The World’s Most Dangerous Magic II”. It also has several photos including one of Michael’s recent trip to the beaches of Santa Monica, California where he levitated Hollywood actress Rachelle Pettinato high above the sand. Michael attributes his success to a large, yet very close-knit family. As a child, on Saturday mornings, his Dad would faithfully take him to the magic store. His mom, brother, and sister had more magic tested on them than most people see in their lifetime. Whenever he performs large stage productions, family members from around the country travel to show their support. “I am constantly thinking about magic, 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” Michael said during the interview. “It’s really a never ending process, but one that I thoroughly enjoy.” PRIMO is an up-scale Italian American publication dedicated to the celebration and preservation of Italian American traditions and culture. It features food, wine, fashion and stories about the achievements people of Italian ancestry. Published bi-monthly, PRIMO debuted its first issue in 2000. THE "X" DECK ---------------------------------- Message from Peter Marucci (Canada) Just because you can do something, doesn't mean you should do it. You may have spent six months learning to do a faro shuffle; that doesn't mean you have to inflict it on your audience. You may have spent a pile of money on the latest "hot" trick; that doesn't mean that it is entertaining. Remember the KISS principle: Keep It Simple, Stupid. That's why most of the material in this column is boiled down to its simplest possible handling; the object is to spend as little effort as possible on the working of the trick so you can devote your full attention to the presentation. In a lot of cases, that is a very subjective view on my part; what is awkward to me may be the simplest way of doing it for someone else. So it is with the following offering. It's based on a routine by Larry Becker, (M.U.M., March '93) in which he uses a Pop-Eye Popper deck. This is a gaffed deck that can't really be handled safely by a spectator -- although Larry does it that way. I loved the concept, but I wanted something that was as clean as possible and could stand a reasonable amount of heat from the audience. So I came up with: THE "X" DECK Effect: The magician says he has a favorite card in the deck and, if the spectator picks any card but that one, she will get a reward. Naturally, whatever card she picks, the magi says is his favorite. However, he proves it by showing that it is the only one marked differently from the rest of the deck. But, being a nice guy, he gives the spectator the reward anyway. Working: Shuffle a deck of red-backed cards until they are thoroughly mixed. Count off 26 cards and trim about 1/32 of an inch from their short end. You can do this, one card at a time, with an X-Acto-type knife or you can put the 26 cards in a vise (covering the outside cards with wood or cardboard so they aren't damaged) and sand them down. Either way, it's going to take a fair bit of time so most people aren't going to be bothered. That's good; because, when you're finished, you'll have something that isn't being done by every other person at the club. Once you've trimmed the 26 cards, get a thick, wide marker and put a large "X" on the backs of each. The "X" should run almost from corner to diagonal corner and cover much of the back of the card. It will stand out more on a red-backed deck, which is what I called for above. When the ink has fully dried, put the 26 short cards together with the 26 regular cards, alternating long, short, long, short, etc. You now have what is essentially a Svengali deck but with all the faces of the cards different. However, if you riffle the backs one way or the other, you can show them as normal or as marked with an "X". I also have made up a phony cheque, drawn on "The Bank of Magic", which says: "Pay to bearer: One thousand laughs." The phony cheque also has my name and phone number. (Remember: promote yourself wherever possible!) Presentation: With the cheque in a handy pocket, ribbon-spread the deck on the table, face up, as you patter: "It's a little know fact that every magician has a favorite card in the deck. Usually we keep that card a secret but tonight I'm going to use it to help someone become a big winner." Ask a spectator for assistance and continue: "All you have to do to be the big winner is to touch one of these cards and -- if it's NOT my favorite card -- you win. And what do you win, you ask? Well, I was going to make it 10 dollars but I changed my mind and made out a cheque for a thousand." Take the cheque out, folded in half so the front is not visible, and lay it on the table. The spectator then taps one of the cards. Break the deck at that point, scooping up all the cards above the chosen one; slide the chosen card aside, in clear view; scoop up the cards below the chosen one and put them ABOVE the cards you scooped up just a second earlier. This reverses the halves of the deck and so the back of the bottom card of the deck is different from the chosen, face-up card on the table. For example, if the card was a blank back, the bottom card of the face-up deck will have an "X" on its back; and vice versa. "Well, Sally (if that's her name; if not, improvise)," you say, "I hate to tell you this but, out of the whole deck, you did pick my favorite card -- even though the odds were 52 to 1 in your favor. So I guess you don't get the cheque." Allow a pause here as the absurdity of all this sinks in. "Okay, I know what you're thinking. You're thinking that's not really my favorite card; I just said that so I won't have to hand over the cheque. Well, to prove it, I can show you that the back of my card is different from all the other cards in the deck." Turn the deck backs up and riffle, Svengali-fashion, to show all the card backs are the same as the top one. Then turn over the tabled, chosen card to show that it is different. "So you see, I wasn't trying to fool you; that card really was the one I didn't want you to pick. But, Sally, since you've been so good about the whole thing, I'm going to give you the cheque anyhow. (Hand over cheque and let her read it.) There you have it -- my personal cheque, good for one thousand -- laughs. And I hope you've had a lot of them with me tonight. Thank you." Second Thoughts: In Larry Becker's routine, he finishes off with a stuffed bear -- a Becker Bear -- being given to the spectator. I use the promotional, comedy cheque. You can use something original to you: A balloon animal, a puzzle, some token of the event that they can take away. And that is critical: The spectator MUST be left with something to make him or her a winner. Otherwise, it's just another case of the oh-so-clever magician outsmarting someone who has kindly volunteered to assist him. Rude, ill-mannered, boorish, and lousy entertainment are some of the words that come to mind when I hear of something like that happening. But, then, you wouldn't do that, would you? Finally, this can be done with 26 blue-backed and 26 red-backed cards, or a rainbow deck or -- well, you get the idea. Each person builds on what has gone before -- and that's how magic grows and thrives.
