John Calvert Now Back On His Boat ---------------------------------- Message from Bev Bergeron (US) Alan: John (Calvert) called last night (Sunday) from his boat. Yes, he was bitten - five times, but he is getting better. For those that do not know the Brown Recluse spider has a bite that causes the flesh to rot. It is like a small cancer that eats into the body slowly. We have them in Florida, but did not know that they had moved to the Boston area. I thought that they were a tropical type spider. John is now on his boat and in good spirits. He is already making plans to go back on tour. It will take a lot of treatments for the bite and at about $10 a day for one pill, he will have to go back on the road to pay off those he has taken. At 92, going on 93 in August -- there is nothing going to stop this man. ------------------------------------ 3. Message from John Calvert ------------------------------------- Message from John Calvert (US) Tammy joins me with sincere appreciation to all our friends who are concerned about my encounter with five Brown Recluse spiders. Happy to report that I am recovering rapidly. Four spiders died on contact, all had broken teeth. The fifth has no more chance of surviving than Saddam Hussein. Love and Regards to all. Special thanks to Alan Watson and Maria Ibanez. ----------------------------- 4. The Magic Circle Goes Online For Centenary ---------------------------------- Message from David Beckley, MIMC - Press Officer The Magic Circle has added to its existing website (www.TheMagicCircle.co.uk) a new site dedicated to The Magic Circle Centenary Celebrations when four exciting days of the world’s best magic are planned to take place in London on 20th – 23rd July 2005. Warning: COINvention ---------------------------------- Message from Curtis Kam September 2003, Las Vegas Nevada's San Remo hotel will host: first, the most amazing Las Vegas Magic Invitational ever, followed by a magic event that is unique in all the world: The First Annual COINvention! That's right, an entire convention dedicated solely to magic with coins. Pressure-fit into a single day will be lectures and performances by the men who practically defined the theory and practice of Coin magic, and who are leading the pack today. Featuring a special performance by the Master, David Roth. Lectures by Michael Rubenstein, David Neighbors, Reed McClintock, Curtis Kam, Kainoa Harbottle, and featuring Panel discussions on the real work behind "Threefly"; (the visual coins across); Bold and new applications of the Edge Grip, and the exotic Mutobe palm; and a special presentation by none other than Bob Kohler on the Ramsay "Cylinder and Coins", with new and classic approaches to the legendary mystery. And, as an added surprise, returning from the under most region of magic's underground, Geoff Latta will reveal the stellar material he has kept to himself all these years. For those of you who remember Geoff's groundbreaking contributions to the seminal text "Coinmagic", imagine material that was too good to reveal there. That's what he's bringing to the party. And it will be a party. We had to stop booking talent, just to leave room for attendees. But if you have a soft spot in your heart for cold, hard steel, this is the magic event for you. Warning: the classic palm will NOT be explained..... More details are available at the LVMI website. ---------------------------------- 6. Need Close-Up Size Doctor's Bag ---------------------------------- Message from Scott Wells I just bought a card fountain (for regular, poker size cards) and I'm looking for a small doctor's type bag...one that hinges open where I can place the fountain. A doctor's bag stays open so the cards won't spring back into the case. It doesn't have to be a doctor's bag, but that's the kind of thing I think looks normal and most unsuspecting. I can only find the full size bags but I thought I saw one of the smaller ones for sale at a convention some years ago. You can send me a private e-mail at scott@houstonmagic.com if you can help me or direct me to a source. ---------------------------------- 10. Jahn Gallo - Lecturing In South Africa ---------------------------------- Message from Jahn Gallo (Sweden) Jahn & Gun Gallo - the talkative trixters from Sweden will be featured guest performers at SA Magic Convention - Durban 2003 www.sams.org.za/Convention2003/ When: 23 – 27 September 2003 Where: Blue Waters Hotel. Marine Parade, DURBAN From the SA Magic Convention Home page: "Once upon a time, some thirty years ago, Jahn and Gun Gallo, had a dream... A dream about being professional entertainers. But not even in their wildest dreams did they believe that their comedy, their magic and entertainment would take them to more than 40 countries around the globe! It has been and still is an enjoyable journey for them, full of surprises, some let downs, but always interesting and inspiring. Nowadays the market is full of videos and books about card magic and close up magic. Rarely you find any material about stage magic or stand up magic... they have drawn from their 30 years of professional experience and created a lecture about "Real World Magic" In the real world you are often asked to perform for an audience of 50 – 400 people. The stage facilities are many times bad or non existent. You will learn practical magic with a minimum of props. Easy to set up magic. Magic with strong audience impact –Their professional rope routine fine tuned during 30 years of work! Jahn’s Osaka Bills routine – an easy manipulative production of bank notes from your bare hands. There is a fantastic ring and rope routine with audience participation – this effect alone can be presented as a complete act. Effects with playing cards – normal cards or jumbo cards – But you will also learn why – not only how it works – information about audience management – how to pick your volunteers - All the bits and pieces they have picked up during their 30 years as professional Entertainers. The lecture will be followed by a work shop where they really do some work – where Jahn gives personal instruction to every one attending the work shop. They will also present a spot in the Convention Gala Show. To this we will ad: Gun and I are always interested in doing a lecture tour in Your country or / and perform at Your Convention ---------------------------------- 11. Welcome To New Zealand Darryl Beckmann ---------------------------------- Message from Richard Webster (NZ) A group of magicians enjoyed a pleasant meeting with Darryl Beckmann, co-owner of Market Magic in Seattle, when he was in Auckland this week. As well as hearing the latest news from the United States, we were also able to see - and buy - a range of beautifully made, limited edition magic effects. Darryl will be touring New Zealand for the next four weeks, and is looking forward to catching up with many magician friends on his travels. ---------------------------------- 12. Let There Be Light ---------------------------------- Message from Peter Marucci (Canada) Sometimes it only takes a small thing to turn an all-right routine into a signature piece. While I don't do a lot of coin work, I have a few bits that have stood me in good stead for many years. The following is based on a Bobo routine, from J.B.'s great book Modern Coin Magic. It is called, for no particular reason: LET THERE BE LIGHT Effect: The magus shows a half dollar and an English penny to the spectator and has her take both of them in her hand. She then hands the half dollar back to the magus and -- you were expecting something else? -- The half and the penny change places, even as she holds the penny. The magus then shows the coins, pointing out that they are about the same size, but different metals. "And," he says, "they are also different weights. Did you notice that? Which one do you think is a little lighter?" No matter which the spectator says, the magus opens his hand and lets drop to the table one coin and -- yep! -- a little lighter. Working: You'll need two half dollars and one English penny. You'll also need a little lighter. These can often be found in novelty stores -- a miniature Zippo-type on a key chain; there are also small disposable lighters available -- but the Zippo-type definitely looks better. The penny and a half are on the table, the other half is finger-palmed in the right hand and the lighter is in the right pocket. Show the two coins on the table and have them examined. Take back the half and toss it into your left hand. Take the penny and, as you toss it into the left hand, switch it for the other half. (This is the Bobo Switch, from Modern Coin Magic -- a simple but extremely useful move.) You now have two half dollars in the closed left hand and a penny concealed in your right. Ask the spectator to open her hand and place the two halves into it, gently closing her fingers so she doesn't notice that one of the coins has changed. Ask her to put her hand behind her back and, with the other hand, take out one coin and lay it on the table. She will, of course, bring out a half dollar. Comment on here generosity: "Gee, you kept the penny and very generously gave me the half dollar. That's really nice of you." As well as making the spectator feel comfortable, this also locks in the thought that the spectator still has the penny -- the coin of lesser value. Pick up the half from the table with the right hand and pretend to toss it into the left. Again do the Bobo switch and actually toss the penny from the right hand into the left, retaining the half in the right hand. Turn the left hand down and left the coin slide to the fingertips so you can tap it on the table without its being seen. Again point out that the spectator generously gave you the half (tap the table) while keeping the penny: "And it seems only fair that I should return the favor by magically making the coins change places." Open your hand, showing the penny and ask the spectator to open her hand and drop her coin on the table; it is, of course, the half although she believes it is the penny. With the he two coins on the table, ask her to examine them carefully and, as she does so, reach into your pocket, ditching the other half dollar and finger-palming the lighter. Point out that both coins are of a similar size and they are of different metals. As you say this, take the penny with your right hand and toss it into the left hand; take the half dollar and pretend to toss it into the left, too; actually you switch it for the lighter. Ask the spectator if she noticed a difference in weight between the two coins: "One of these was a little lighter; did you notice which one?" No matter what she says, drop the penny on the table -- "Well, this is a penny" -- and then drop the lighter -- "and this is a little lighter." Let your audience examine the penny and lighter, then pick them up and drop them in the right pocket along with the other half dollar. This leaves you set to repeat immediately. Second Thoughts: Okay, this isn't in the miracle class but it is one of those things that people will remember about you for a long time. And that is because there is nothing -- absolutely nothing -- in all of magic so amazing to a lay person as to have the magic actually happen in his or her hands. STOP RIGHT HERE ARE READ THAT PARAGRAPH AGAIN! The reason for tossing the penny into the hand at the end and palming the half is twofold: First, if the spectator should catch a flash of the silver lighter, it will simply look like the silver half; secondly, it is just more logical to end up with a copper item and a silver item, since you started out with that combination. If you switch the lighter for the penny, your audience will simply think that you did exactly that -- albeit cleverly. But it the penny and lighter drop on the table, there is a spark of doubt: Maybe he DID change the half into the lighter somehow. And it's the little things that are important, that separate the experts from the hobbyists. These are the little things that your audience won't consciously notice but will stick with them in the backs of their minds, making your miracles all the more miraculous. Perfection is in the details. It's true here and it's true in most things. Florida Magician's Convention 2003 ---------------------------------- Message From Bev Bergeron (US) By now, you may have heard that Cypress Gardens has announced that they are going out of business and closing. Although this is unfortunate, this will not have a huge impact on our plans for the 2003 Florida Magician's Convention. We are still on-track to hold an excellent convention. The convention hotel is still expecting us, the performers and lecturers are confirmed, the dealer's room is nearly sold out, and everything is ready to go. The only impact from the closure of Cypress Gardens is that we will produce the evening shows and stage contest in a different theatre nearby. We have already identified 3 options, and we expect to conclude negotiations and announce the new show venue early next week. We will also arrange some additional spouse/family events to compensate for the loss of the ability for family members to be entertained in the park. Please help us to squash any rumors to the effect that the convention is in trouble. This is not so. Two of the theatres that we are considering are actually nicer than the Ice Palace, so this may actually make the convention better! As soon as the deal is signed with a theatre next week, I will send another update. Art Thomas ---------------------------------- 17. More Treats In Store At S.A.M. Knife Thrower Slices Assistant On Live TV ---------------------------------- Message from Bev Bergeron (US) Thu April 10, 2003 10:04 AM ET LONDON (Reuters) - A record-breaking knife thrower shocked Britons on Thursday when one of his daggers sliced into the head of his assistant on live TV. Circus performer Jayde Hanson, 23, was demonstrating his skills when one of his knives hit his assistant and girlfriend, 22-year-old Yana Rodianova. As she clutched the side of her head, horrified presenter Fern Britton shouted: "Oh my God, there is blood, quick -- get her off." A spokeswoman for ITV's "This Morning," one of the country's most popular daytime programs, said the wound was only "a nick." "She's absolutely fine and recovering well," the spokeswoman said, before adding ruefully: "You don't really expect that kind of thing from a world record-holder." Over one million viewers had been watching as Hanson, who works for the British-based Cottle and Austen Circus, showed off how many knives he could hurl at Yana in 60 seconds. He had been trying to emulate the pace of his world record-breaking effort of 120 knives thrown in two minutes which he achieved as part of National Circus Day on Tuesday. "He felt confident as he has been throwing his mother's kitchen knives since the age of 10," the show said on its Web Site before the accident. Perhaps not surprisingly, Hanson, whose father was an elephant tamer and mother a trapeze artist, is currently having to advertise for a new assistant as Yana, who bears two scars from previously mis-directed knives, wants to concentrate on her hula-hoop act. His previous assistant reportedly left the job after being hit in the foot, her third injury from a wayward knife. "In 11 years of performing, I've only hit my assistant on five occasions," he told the Daily Mail newspaper recently. ------------------------------ 19. The Amazing ‘Orchante’ Saga – Page 156 ---------------------------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) The problem for me was that more than 99% of the clubs booked all their entertainment through various entertainment agencies, and they sure had the scene sewn up tight. Most of the clubs (Returned Services League and Football clubs) had their shows scheduled at least two months ahead. So, although my Press cuttings and publicity from New Zealand was attention-grabbing, and all the various secretary and club managers I met through Bill were suitably impressed, I couldn’t get work, they kept referring me to umpteen different agencies. After ringing a few, the first thing they wanted know was - “Where are you working so we can come and have a look at your show?” Difficult when you can’t get booked! To make ends met, I had to resort to going to various restaurants, showing them ‘my wares’ and performing close-up magic. They weren’t anything special or flash – no contracts or tax was involved, just cash in hand; the money was peanuts, but I had to pay our way somehow. For me, performing magic like that it was quite mortifying but, when needs must… besides - it was good practice. The ‘Orchanté Luck’, strikes again! Bill takes me to the Wentworthville Leagues Club, another of which he was a member. The Secretary manager was Clive Herring, a really nice and agreeable chap. He was one of the very few who freelanced and did his own entertainment bookings - not relying on what agents sent him. He knew what sort of acts went well for his club; he had lists of all the better agents and what acts they had on their books, and HE would choose which artists HE wanted. Sunday the 15th of August - exactly fifteen days after we had arrived in Australia, we performed our first ever show at the ‘WENTY’ ( as it was commonly called) Leagues Club! Our show went down a storm! Afterwards, we finished up in the club restaurant for a meal, and a congratulatory bottle or two of wine etc. Naturally, the close-up magic started – Clive was gob-smacked, and he asked me if I would consider performing the ‘close-up’ in the restaurant on an assortment of nights for him! I finished-up doing several weeks (including the ‘El Cheapo’s) for him. The following Sunday, the 22nd of August, we did an afternoon show at the Fairfield RSL. Apparently one of the acts hadn’t turn up for some reason; the secretary manager remembered us, and that we were staying at Bills home. He rang to see if we could fill in - we did! Twenty two days in the country and it seems as if doors are starting to open. More so when, on the following Thursday when I was working my close-up at the ‘Wenty’, Clive rebooked our show for the Fri. 3rd, Sat. 4th and Sun. 5th of September. We were the support act for Australia’s Top TV ‘Star’ at the time - Don Lane, an American who resided in Australia. The look of disbelief on Clives face when I said, “Who’s He?” was a sight to behold. The ‘Done Lane Show’, which also included famous Australian personality - Bert Newton, as ‘Second Banana’, was the hottest Variety Show on Television, and had been for some years before we arrived in Aussie. How the hell would we know that, after all, we had only been in the Country ‘five minutes’ - as it were! A few years later it all went ‘Pear Shaped’ for Done Lane when he had The Amazing James Randi, as a guest artist one night. James had arrived in Australia because several water diviners were claiming his offer of One Million Dollars, saying they could ‘prove’ that they were the ‘genuine article’(they didn’t). On the TV show, Don Lane asked James about Uri (spit, spit) Geller, James’s pet subject. ‘The Amazing Randi’, proceeded to demonstrate how Geller fakes ‘Spoon Bending’ etc. when suddenly, Done Lane, obviously a believer in Geller (the fool), TOTALLY ‘LOST IT’- ON LIVE TELEVISION, IN FRONT OF A VEIWING ADIENCE OF MILLIONS! In an outrageous, unbelievable fit of temper and behaviour, he wildly slung his arm across the table, and swept the spoons, forks, everything - off the table in front of James, sending it flying in all directions across the studio, then stormed off the stage! Veronica and I were among the huge viewing audience to witness this astonishing episode. We just sat in stunned silence as, I guess, the rest of the millions of other viewers did! Not surprisingly, ‘The Done Lane Show’ vanished from Australian television screens overnight. In a matter of days, this television ‘Super Star’ had left Australia for America in disgrace, never to be heard of again. How the mighty can fall - WOW! Bert Newton is a very funny, likeable man, and one of Australia’s top TV personalities and most talented actors; he is still going strong. In fact our own Kiwi ‘Wonder Voice’ Derek Metzger was working with Bert last year in the long running Theatre Production of – ‘The Wizard of OZ’, in Melbourne. That was a big diversion. I’ll get back on track next page. See you next week. ------------------------------------- 20.
