Regarding Alan's Editor Message in Issue Number #122 ---------------------------------- Message from Phill Walsh (Aust) Might I highly recommend magical fraternity members consider a superb piece of software namely 'Mailwasher' which is FREE (a US$20 donation is more than worthwhile). Mailwasher allows the user to go directly to their email ISP, view, blacklist, bounce, delete (any combination/or all) email BEFORE downloading to your computer. This provides a means to remove unwanted spam and allows one to see any email having a macro or an attachment. Version 1.24 is free at: www.mailwasher.net I do not normally promote software as a rule, but with over 25 years in the computer industry using software and hardware one feels compelled to share a darn 'good thing'. www.hutch.com.au/~nrocksvet/philsweb ---------------------------------- 3. Wayne Rogers UK Tour ---------------------------------- Message from Tony Griffith (UK) I have just spent a delightful couple of days with Wayne Rogers. It was my good fortune to see his lecture in Weston-super-Mare. From there we travelled in convey to Ipswich, where we were both appearing at their One Day Convention. His lecture 'Nothing to Declare' was much appreciated by both audiences and his 'Appearing Poles' in their various disguises caused much comment and interest. Wayne is driving around the UK and his tour in some respects resembles a yo yo tour as he is travelling up and down the country. Most of the journey is being undertaken by car, which is fully laden with boxes of items for sale. The car is slowly becoming much lighter as the tour progresses as magicians snap up all his 'goodies'. Magicians in New Zealand can be proud of Wayne as he is a great ambassador for your country. ---------------------------------- 5. Lisa Richards Magical Travels ---------------------------------- Message from Lisa Richards (Aust) I have just spent a wonderful afternoon exploring the resort town of Banff in the high Rockies of Alberta, Canada. It is the culmination of an extraordinary series of magical adventures that has taken me around the world, from the Swiss Alps to the Magic Castle in Hollywood, from the Black Forest of Germany to Disneyland, and from the Smokie Mountains of Tennessee to the bright lights of the Las Vegas strip. This most excellent adventure began nearly five months ago in Auckland, New Zealand, where I met up with Jay Scott Berry at their annual convention. Like many of you, I met Jay when he was on tour in Australia last October. From that chance meeting grew an amazing synergy, professionally, artistically and personally. It was there that we first released the new JSB Topits and Sleeve Pockets, ideas that we had been collaborating on since we met. Alan Watson and the whole NZ gang there were great hosts for this memorable event. After New Zealand we flew out to perform on the tropical island of Vanuatu at the Waterfront Bar and Grill, affectionately known as "The Magic Castle of the South Pacific". Don and Donna were the perfect hosts on what I will always remember as "the isle of shake and bake". You see, a few days before we arrived, they had experienced a large earthquake. This added an additional dimension to our shows, as there were numerous aftershocks throughout our stay. Next stop, Europe, where we hit the Autobahn and raced down to Geneva for Pavel's Magic Day. This is an annual convention sponsored by Pavel, which draws magicians from Switzerland, Germany and France. This was a perfect chance to refresh my very rusty French. The line up included Ali Bongo, who was to be the first of many stars of magic that I would be privileged to meet and spend time with. He was friendly, witty and thoroughly charming. In short, a proper British gentleman. After the convention, we had time to "chill out" in the resort town of Chamonix, high in the French Alps. While there, we took a Gondola to a mountaintop, that at 3842 meters is big enough to eat Kosiusko whole and still have room for desert! At this point, my work began on a dynamic new costume for Jay, to be premiered at the Magic Castle in March. Then, it was on to the United States, where I started in Wilmington, North Carolina. After a series of lectures up and down the East coast, we ended up at the Winter Carnival of Magic in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. As Jay was performing Close-up there, it was the perfect opportunity to test out the new costume. Easier said than done...up until the wee hours before the show, I worked feverishly to create the illusion of a finished costume, while making sure the Sleeve Pockets, Topits and other technical features actually worked :-o! It was touch and go up to the last second when Jay gave the OK and we went for it. I have to admit, I still had my doubts, and spent the entire show holding my breath. The good news is that not only did the costume look great, but the performance was virtually flawless. IBM president Robert Escher called it "one of the finest presentations he had ever seen". By this time, the Topits and Sleeve Pockets were a hit. I was making them as fast as I could as well as installing them for magicians at lectures and conventions along the way. The following weekend was the Glass City Conjurer's Conclave in Toledo Ohio. From there, we headed west towards LA, along the way, taking in the spectacular sights of Colorado's Rocky Mountains and the eerie but beautiful moonscapes of Utah's deserts. On to the Magic Castle. Wow, it was as amazing as I always imagined it would be, a beautiful Victorian mansion set up on a hillside just above the Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. The Castle is home to 3 separate and distinct theatres; The Close-up Gallery, The Parlour of Prestidigitation and The Palace of Mystery. Jay was booked in the Parlour, an intimate Victorian style room seating 64. Once again, it was a race to finish off the costume. I was literally adding the final stitches up until 10 minutes before the first show. The costume, a Victorian inspiration with a futuristic flair, perfectly accented Jay's performance while fitting the theme of the Parlour. The 3 weeks in LA were like a magical dream come true. I was honored to meet and spend time with people that I had only read about. From Milt and Irene Larsen to Mark and Nani Wilson, Billy McComb, Jerry Andrus, Max Maven, and even the legendary Carl Ballantine to name a few. I was continually amazed at how gracious and friendly everyone was. I was even invited to Billy McComb's 80th birthday party, where the guest list read like a who's who in magic! As if that wasn't enough, I then hit the road to Vegas. First up was the Siegfried and Roy show. This was truly the most amazing magical spectacle I have ever seen. I can't even begin to describe it, you simply have to see it for yourself. Afterwards, we were invited backstage, along with Channing Pollack, who was also in the audience. Siegfried and Roy were both incredibly warm and personable. Siegfried even shared some of his fond memories of travel in Australia. The following night, it was off to the The Monte Carlo Casino for the Lance Burton show. The theatre was absolutely gorgeous and Lance's performance was impeccable! From his classic dove routine to the newest illusions, this was a top notch production. Once again, we were invited backstage and spent the rest of the evening having dinner with Lance. I was amazed that, for such a superstar of magic, how incredibly friendly and down-to-earth he was. He even related the oft told urban legend of Dai Vernon and the Kangaroo. It was a whirlwind week which also included meeting Penn and Teller and seeing their stage show at the Rio, a few afternoons hanging out with Jeff McBride and dinner at Johnny and Pam Thompson's house. Jeff, like all the rest was very open and simply charming, even giving me a sneak preview of his latest secret project. Johnny and Pam were ever so gracious and Pam even remembered meeting me in Australia at the Stars of Illusion show. Michael Close was also there and the evening went very late with anecdotes, stories and magical reminiscing. By the end, I felt like just one of the family. Without even a day's rest, it was back across the US, to the east coast. One of the highlights there was a weekend in Baltimore at Denny and Lee's magic shop. Jay was booked to lecture and we had the idea to also offer a special Topit workshop. This being the first, we didn't know what to expect. Well, the response was tremendous. I was literally overwhelmed as the magicians piled me with jackets to be altered. I spent at least 20 of the next 24 hours just getting these ready for the workshop. I was even sewing additional modifications during the workshop itself! From there, we headed up into Canada, with a brief stop at Niagara Falls and then on to London and Toronto. Since then we've travelled the length of Canada, leaving a trail of happy magicians and their new Topits :-). Just got a call from Brian Glow, one of Canada's top pro's, saying goodbye and thanking me for the work. Whew! It all seems completely surreal. In a few hours, I'll be on a plane, heading back home. It will be a chance to remind my family what I look like and catch up on some costume work back in Oz. Looks like I've only got a month or so, as Jay and I are already booked back in the US for the Phoenix Gathering and the IBM Convention. From there, it's back to the Magic Castle before flying off to the Highlands of Scotland where we're both performing this August at Falkland Palace. But that, as they say, is another story. ---------------------------------- 8. 12th Birthday - Junior Branch Hawkes Bay ---------------------------------- Message from peter Rawstrom (NZ) Celebrations took place last Sunday as the junior branch of the Hawkes Bay Club had a get together on the occasion of their 12th birthday. Ron and Eileen Mogridge started the junior branch with 6 members, meeting in their home once a month. Over the years a lot of members have come and gone. But it has been encouraging to have two of the original members still attending and becoming very competent magicians. It was a great party with 20 attending, junior members, seniors and some parents and friends. There was lots of finger flinging and performing. Some of the classics were well presented and it was nice to see the Pop eye Pips, Colour change C.D. Blondie Loo, Giant Cards across and the lolly pop production all receiving a great response. A variety of close up came out of the members pockets including traffic lights, rope effects, jumping gems, colour changing cards and sympathetic matchboxes. Card tricks were in abundance with one of the highlights being Richard Pinners Casino Melts taken from his lecture at the Auckland convention. Moggo has retired from performing magic and has passed the junior section over to Peter Rawstrone and Deryck Olsen who are encouraging the 9 current members to practice and perfect a new effect each month. Any feed back from other clubs would be most welcome, especially on how to encourage the younger ones to gain confidence, how to stimulate interest and how to get them to put in the practice time. Regards Peter phraw@xtra.co.nz ---------------------------------- 9. Guy Cater To Marry Cynthia In September ---------------------------------- Message from Guy Cater (NZ) As a Stage Hypnotist I have been extremely lucky to procure some work in the United States performing at College Graduation Nights in California. My girlfriend Cynthia and I leave NZ on Wed 22nd May and fly to San Francisco. We have a couple of shows in the Sacramento area then drive down to San Diego to stay at the home of English born - American resident, hypnotist Barry Jones. This will be our base for three weeks and we will commute to shows from there. A highlight of our trip will be visiting The Magic Castle in June to watch our friend (and this e-zine editor) Alan Watson performing there. After I have completed the shows we are going to drive up to Casper Wyoming which is Cynthia's home town so I can meet her folks and family. Whilst in Casper I will be performing a Comedy Magic and Hypnotism Show as a benefit for the Casper Elks Lodge. Noticed that there are two magic clubs in Fort Collins, Colorado so will try and visit with them on our way through to Wyoming. The big news (for us) that many in New Zealand probably won't know is that Cynthia and I will be married in New Zealand in September ... we promise an extremely different and fun filled day and all magi’s in NZ are invited ... as both of us have been widowed and have had traditional weddings we feel we would like this one to be a bit off the wall and although all the right sentiments will be in force, the day will be one to remember....more on this when we return from the States in July. www.hypnotist.co.nz ---------------------------------- 10. Billy McComb Can’t Make Sydney Convention ---------------------------------- Message from Kent Blackmore (Aust) News from the 28th Australian Convention Billy McComb has unfortunately been forced to abandon his trip to the Sydney Convention, due to a serious illness in his immediate family. The convention committee apologises to registrants for the change of plan, which is beyond our control. However we do not intend to leave you without a replacement performer and we are pleased to announce that DAVID MALEK from the United States will be lecturing and performing. If you aren't already familiar with his name, try these recommendations from two of magic's most respected magical commentators:- "David Malek is both a superb card man and a great entertainer. His show and lecture should not be missed by anyone who loves card magic." - Darwin Ortiz "Because David Malek is a genuine actor and a killer magician, the old platitude about actors 'playing' the part of magicians becomes a certitude: Malek is magic." - Jon Racherbaumer The Convention is also very proud to announce a late-night lecture by ANDREW WIMHURST. Andrew has a proven and growing reputation, both at home and overseas, as an innovative and skilled technician and entertainer. Add to that our three major evening shows, the amazing LENNART GREEN, award-winning MAGIC CHRISTIAN and the legendary MOI-YO MILLER MONTES and you have a weekend second to none. Only three weeks to go! If you (still?) haven't registered, now is the time! Full details at the convention website, at http://come.to/sydneymagic ---------------------------------- 11. Searching For Gavin White ---------------------------------- Message from James Dowley (US) I am searching for a friend from a long time ago, his name is Gavin White. I understand that he may be practising magic in Japan. The only link to him that I am able to find via the internet is a picture of him, in a tuxedo, reading the Dominion with a portion of his hair on fire. I am hoping that you or one of your collegues may know of him and pass my email along to Gavin. I am going to be in Japan for the World Cup and am hoping that I can make contact with him. I am located in Portland, Oregon in the United States and will be traveling to Japan with my 13 year old son. Thank you for any help you might be able to give me with this. Looking For Ultimate Uplift Instructions ---------------------------------- Message from Gordon Precious (Canada) Could you ask if any of your recipients has the instructions for an effect which I believe was called, "Ultimate Uplift"). I believe Ultimate Uplift was manufactured and sold by Supreme Magic - it consists of a plastic tube about 13" high x 2.5" dia. (32cm x 6cm dia.) with four clear Plexiglass jars inside, three of which each contain a different coloured silk and the fourth has a blendo silk of the other three colours. I bought the effect at an auction, without instructions, and would appreciate it if any fellow magus has them, if he or she would be so kind as to send me a copy. The Passing Of Ed Schuman ---------------------------------- Message from George Schindler (US) Public Relations - Society of American Magicians. Regret to inform you that we just heard about the passing of Ed Schuman, Life Members, Past National President, (1968-69) Past Predisident of the Parent Assembly #1 (1963) member of the S.A.M. Hall of Fame and a loved magician and innovator. Ed Died this afternoon (May 23) in Denver Colorado at age 85. ---------------------------------- 14. Tommy Orchard Reply, Re The Review ---------------------------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) Steve Walker suggested that Readers' and I check out the review by Ian Rowland. Apart from one or two minor differences, his thoughts were much the same as mine - I have been in touch with Ian since, and told him that I just knew he was an ‘intelligent man’! I also apologised to for the misspelling of his surname. Steve also said that he had it on good authority that Lance Burton was never any danger during his roller-coaster escape. Just goes to prove that not only is Lance a great magician, but a damn good actor as well! By the way Steve, do you still have a hang-up about people who have rather expensive ‘super-duper’ hi-fi stereo systems in their car, complete with a very sophisticated graphics equaliser, who know how to use it, as all recordings are not of the same tonal quality! One of the nicest compliments I've had from live bands, for years - who are not too happy about ‘canned’ music, was the tonal quality and clarity of my recordings that I used during my act - that same quality follows-through for my in-car entertainment. Pity more magicians don't pay the same meticulous attention to their recorded music quality as they do with their acts - or should do! Thank you Bob Loomis for your kind comments. Also look for correcting me in regards to my statement that - ‘I had never heard of any one accidentally killing themselves in an escape stunt - but I stand to be corrected’. But then again, the silly bugger didn’t take care of the ‘WHAT IF’ factor! Incidentally, all of my dictionaries, English, American and Readers' Digest, all say that either STRAIT or STRAIGHT (jacket) is correct but, if Houdini used ‘STRAIGHT’, then that sure as hell is good enough for me! ---------------------------------- 15. The Orchante Saga #107 ---------------------------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) TREVOR KING -QSM, A LIVING LEGEND! {Q S M - ‘Queens Service Medal’ - For Services Rendered In A Particular Field Of Endeavour} If you were to ask the average New Zealander, “WHO IS TREVOR KING?” - more than likely you would get a blank stare, a shrug of the shoulders and a “DUNNO!” in response. YET HIS NAME - THE MAN HIMSELF, is held in great esteem and, is highly respected by some of the biggest names in Show Business throughout the world! In attempting to record Trevor King’s entire life-story, I may have bitten off a lot more than I can chew! Only Trevor himself and, several large volumes I would think, could possibly complete it! I’ve known and have been friends with my ‘Uncle’ Trevor since 1960 - we met in Christchurch when I was with: ‘Joe Brown’s Nationwide Search For Stars, Finalists on New Zealand Tour’; I was only 16, going on for 17, years of age at that time. Oh my silvery /grey hairs, that was 42 years ago! Fortunately, Trevor has remained in contact with me over all these years and even more importantly, I have kept every single one of his postcards and letters (carefully stored away in a big box) - most of which are of two or three pages, often more, in length. Each one covers the news of the time and detailed information about WHO IS DOING WHAT IN NEW ZEALAND and, ‘juicy’ inside information that, I can promise you, many would wish I didn’t have! (So, behave yourself - you just never know what I might know, about YOU!) From the BEATLES to the VIENNA BOYS CHOIR, he knew them all, and they all - ‘loved’ him! So much so, than an amazing array of famous (and not so famous) International ‘Show Biz’ Stars, that reads like a - ‘Who’s Who’, have chosen to remain in contact with him over the years and, continue to do so to this day (except those who have ‘kicked the bucket’)! Following, is a list of Theatrical Shows and internationally famous ‘NAMES’ (in no particular order - that way you don’t offend anyone) that Trevor has been associated with, in his capacity as: TOUR, and or ADVANCE MANAGER, during his 40 plus years with: ‘KERRIDGE-ODEON THEATRES LTD., THE LARGEST THEATRICAL ORGANISATION IN THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE’ (I don’t know if that title still holds these days)! Also, JCW THEATRES LTD. and the TIVOLI CIRCUIT! The Beatles, Kenneth Mckellar, The Welsh Choir, Rolf Harris, Cliff Richard, Gene Pitney, The Dave Clark Five, Ray Columbus And The Invaders, Chinese Acrobatic Troupe, The Vienna Boys Choir Tours, The Seekers, The Luton Girls Choir, ‘Franquin’ (New Zealand Hypnotist), Sir Harry Secombe, Kenny Ball, Grahame Bell Jazz Band, Kingston Trio, Ronnie Ronalde Show, Freddie Bell And The Bell Boys, Tex Morton Country Show, Frankie Stevens Pop Show, Patrick O’hagan, The Village People, Andy Stewart, The Platters, Bill Haley And The Comets, Ted Heath Big Band, Nat King Cole, Whirlings All Star Circus, Wirths Circus, Engelbert Humperdinck, Max Merritt And The Meteors Show (NZ), Sir Howard Morrison Show (NZ), Dutch Swing College Band, Louis Armstrong Band Tour, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa (NZ) Tour, Shelly Berman, Roy Orbison Tour, Tom Jones Concerts, Mr Acker Bilk Jazz Band, Maurice Till Concerts (NZ), Nina And Frederik Show, Black And White Mistrel Show, John Rowles Show (NZ/Hawaii), Val Doonican Show, Danish Gym Tours, The Bachelors Show, Everly Brothers Show, Modern Jazz Quartet, The Rolling Stones Tour, The Maori Volcanic Showband, Rodger Fox Big Band Tour, Des O’connor, Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs Show, Vera Lynn Show, Eddie Calvert, Roger Whittaker, Alan Jones Four, Yehudi Menhuin, Danny La Rue Show, ‘Dormia’ (N.Z. - Worlds First Lady Hypnotist), Toni Williams (NZ), Dinah Lee (NZ), Peter Paul And Mary, The Irish Rovers, Herb Alpert Band, Dusty Springfield Tour, The Hollies, Frank Ifield Tour, Dave Clark Five N.Z. Tour, Cliff Richard Tour, Johnny Ray Show, The Trapp Family Tour (Sound Of Music), The Harlem Globe Trotters, Ice Follies, Judith Durham (Seekers) N.Z. Tour. The list of names and shows is never ending. From the ‘few’ that I have listed here, it becomes rather obvious - to say the least, that Trevor King’s credentials are impeccable! ------------------------------------- 16.
