Competitions And Advertising For The Australian Convention ---------------------------------- Message from Kent Blackmore (Aust) At April 22, almost all competitions for the 28th Australian Convention of Magicians are full. The Stage competition has a few places left, but priority will be given to Under-16 competitors and we expect the places to be filled very shortly. If you wish to put your name on a waiting list, in case some performers withdraw from the competition, please note this on your registration form, or email: kblackmore@bigpond.com Unfortunately we cannot guarantee that late entries can be included, due to the very tight convention schedule. Advertising for the convention brochure is likewise closed; sorry if you left it too late. However, Convention Registrations are still open, and we hope to see you in June!! htttp://come.to/sydneymagic ---------------------------------- 4. Beckers Ultimate Book Test ---------------------------------- Message from Paul Romhany (NZ) I have lost my instructions for Larry Beckers Ultimate Book Test. I have the books but can't find my instructions. If anybody has them could you please let me know or email them to me. ---------------------------------- 5. The Patron Saint Of Magicians ---------------------------------- Message from Paul Romhany (NZ) Came across this in the Vancouver Sun Newspaper. 19th Century priest to be patron saint of Magicians Pope John Paul plans to name a 19th Century juggler, acrobat and magician as the patron saint of magicians. Don Bosco is already one of the Catholic world's most popular saints, and his name is on hundreds of schools and churches around the world because of his work with troubled boys in northern Italy. "He loved young people, and made coins and birds and other things disappear", said Reverend Silvio Mantelli, a priest and magician who is part of the Salesian order founded by Saint John Bosco. Father Mantelli and hundreds of Catholic magicians and illusionists went to Rome two months ago and presented a petition to the Pope, asking that the church officially join with them in praying that Saint John Bosco take a special heavenly responsibility for them and their work. Father Mantelli is a fan of Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings and its wizard character, Gandalf, but said he does not know if Saint John Bosco will pay attention to these stars of film and fiction. Father Mantelli tours the world in costume as Mago (magician) Sales, raising money for the Salesian order's work with street children. ---------------------------------- 6. The Orchante Saga #103 ---------------------------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi)\ Another 'Blast From The Past' During the late Sixties, a Maori singer known as - 'Prince' Tui Teka, appeared on the scene, and became a sort of National 'Superstar Icon' in New Zealand. Many people thought that he was a 'Real Maori Prince' but in reality, it was just a fanciful title that he gave himself. Not only was he a singer but he also played various musical instruments as well, notably the trumpet. He had a big voice with a big personality to match - in fact he was a big man in every sense the word; I don't know what he weighed, but it must have been in excess of 20 stone (127/128 kilos), reminiscent of another Maori singer from the Sixties, the late Rama White - she was a wonderful woman with a great sense of humour, who was often advertised as a -' TON OF FUN'! Tui used to drive around in a station wagon - I think it was a 'Chevy' Impala and, where most people would have ' Go-Faster' stripes/decals, Tui had wood panelling that had been beautifully decorated with artistic Maori carvings - rather ostentatious but it did help to create the impression that he was a - 'Real Prince'! That's SHOWBIZ! It was quite a sight to see him get into the car - you could actually see the vehicle lean over, the springs groaning as they took his magnitudinous weight! How he drove it I'll never know, most of the steering wheel disappeared within the folds of his gargantuan stomach! The last time we saw Prince Tui Teka was at the Parramatta League's club (which was one of our regular club bookings), in Sydney Australia, I'm guessing but probably around 1980/81. He was performing as a guest artist with another New Zealand Icon - who just happens to be a very close friend of ours, the famous, EDDIE LOW - 'THE VOICE IN A MILLION'! There were two episodes from that wonderful night that have been 'burnt into my memory banks' forever! The first was when Eddie and Tui - each standing on opposite sides of the stage, played, on their trumpets, a stirring rendition of Nini Rosso's 'IL SILENZIO', which brought the house down! The other episode was when Eddie sang a song that he had written himself titled - 'Songs From Home' which had every New Zealander in the place howling their eyes out, myself included, for the second time - the first being when Eddie, with his guitar, popped around to our home in Sydney one afternoon, and sang it for us, wanting to know what we thought of it. The tears running down my cheeks told him all that he needed to know. He headed off to a studio and commercially recorded it! I really am a 'Softie' at heart! Incidentally, the Secretary manager of the Parramatta League's club in Sydney was a chap called Bruce Cameron, who used to manage the Tainui Motor Hotel in Whakatane, which is where my wife Veronica was brought up and, where we lived prior to leaving for 'Aussie'. It sure is a small world! I cannot vouch for the authenticity of this but - 'WHERE THERE'S SMOKE, THERE'S FIRE'! 'Prince' Tui, whilst on tour somewhere, in the 'Chevy', which was packed with hungry members of his band etc. pulled into a drive-in 'McDonald's'- up to that little mesh covered grill that you talk into. Winding the window down Tui says -" I'll have Five Big Macs, Three chickens - Five large chips and -Three large Cokes!" " Will that be all sir?" queried the tinny voice that issued from the speaker - that probably belonged to some snotty, pimply-faced fifteen year-old. Turning around Tui says, "AND WHAT DO YOU FELLA'S WANT!!! 'Prince' Tui Teka died in 1985, at the age of - 48! 'Nuff said! Tui Teka is buried at Tokomaru Bay, which is on the East coast - around 80 odd km N.E. of Gisborne, h/way 35, where the ruins of a frozen - meat plant and port installations are witness to better times. A Maori meeting- house, built in 1934, with some beautiful Maori carvings on display, is also there. Whilst on holiday recently, Jon Zealando stopped off at Tokomaru Bay and photographed Prince Tui Teka's grave. Veronica, who remembers Tui well from those early days, wanted to know if Jon had to use a - 'Wide Angled Lens'! She can be so SICK at times! It's not entirely her fault. After 'hanging' around me more or less 24 Hours a day, for the best part of 31Years and, being bombarded with my wicked sense of humour, something had to rub off!!! ------------------------------------- 11.
