Lance Burton TV show 31/3/01 ------------------------------------- Message from Hank Moorehouse (US) Just finished watching the latest Lance Burton TV show 31/3/01. Lance Burton on the Road. Different from the normal TV show in that it was not one trick after the other. But rather Lance on a voyage around the U.S. with a stop in his home town of Louisville, Kentucky. I thought it was great because you got to know Lance the person. The magic presented allowed the personality of the magician to come thorough. Watching Lance doing the Multiplying Bottles was a lesson in showmanship. Watch it if it comes your way. Maybe you can use it. ---------------------------------- 3. Needle Through Balloon Effect - Malaki ------------------------------------- Message from Malaki Some other thoughts on the Needle Through Balloon Effect Peter Marucci had some wonderful ideas. The effect is a favorite of mine that always gets a great reaction. Here are my variations; Working within the persona of a 13th century wizard at various Renaissance fairs, the commercial version did not look right. When my purchased needle mysteriously vanished on night, I decided that it was time to create another, larger version. Having acquired a discarded CB antenna, I cut off the ball from the end and sharpened the antenna to a fine, shallow angle, then carefully filed it smooth. After turning a handle from cedar, I used the small antenna mount to fasten the two together with a fancy cast brass piece from an old lamp. Thus I had created a needle that could be passed off as a foil-styled sword. The extra length enabled me to use even the long balloons found at parties. (BTW - I always try to use one of the balloons hanging up at the party - the mystery is highly intensified and the latex has already been stretched out, lessening the chance of breakage.) For this 'sword' I created a self-lubricating sheath out of 1/2" copper tubing. Within this is a length of plastic aquarium tubing, sealed at the bottom end and suspended in the copper tube by corks at either end. A couple shots of WD40 using the tube inside the aquarium tubing will keep the sword lubricated for several months at a time. (Decorate the sheath to suit) For the routine, I will have an audience member take down one of the balloons that are hanging. Lacking such decor, I will have the spectator inflate one of the balloons in my keeping. (Whilst they do this, I will, for the right audience, refer to the balloon as a pig's bladder - a period incarnation of a balloon) Telling the helper to tie off the balloon will direct their attention to the task at hand. This is when I pick up the sword and pull it from its sheath. This will grab the audience's attention, causing them to make various sounds and comments that will direct the helper's attention back to the magician. I will then tell the helper to hold the balloon very still as I begin to move toward them. I then lower the sword with a smile and relieve the helper of the balloon. (Drama) The audience knows at this time what is going to be attempted - they are nervous and on the edge of their seats. Milk it. To intensify this reaction, I will tell them of when I first started doing this effect and the massive number of failures that it required. I also will tell them that it is never a sure form of magic, so it requires absolute silence. I approach the balloon three times with the tip of the sword; the first two will be aborted just prior to contact in order to make some amusing comment. This builds the drama to such a pitch that when I actually penetrate the balloon on the third approach, no one in the audience can help but hold their breath. When the sword has emerged from the other side, I will hold the sword by both handle and tip to emphasize the fact that the penetration has occurred. I will even spin the balloon on the blade of the sword to drive the point home. Care must be given to the tip of the needle, regardless which type you use. Repeated use will eventually dull the tip, and a bent tip means certain death. (For the balloon as well the performer) In my magic bag is a chef's whetstone for removing any bends in the tip, and a short roll of fine emery cloth to sharpen and finish file the tip to a smooth finish. If you do not carry these supplies, be ready to cut the effect from your show. ------------------------------------- 7. Needle Through Balloon Effect - Jack Poulter ------------------------------------- Message from Jack Poulter (Canada) > Finally, back to the beginning: The young magi I referred probably > made one of two mistakes -- the needle point had been blunted (thus >the need of a protective carrying case) To keep the point of the needle super-sharp use crocus cloth. This is similar to emery cloth except that the grit is replaced with jeweller's rouge. You are, in essence, polishing the point. And, as Doctor Marucci has counselled: use a protective sheath for the needle. A piece of rigid plastic tubing with petroleum jelly in one end not only protects, but lubricates the needle. ------------------------------------- 8. The NGK Theatre in Osaka ------------------------------------- Message from Clive Court (Canada) Juliana Chen opens at the NGK Theatre in Osaka, Japan, on April 1st for seven weeks. This will include the registration form, accommodation details and competition information. We are now in the position of bringing out a third guest artist to the Convention from overseas to compliment the expertise and skills of Hank Moorehouse and Richard Pinner. David O'Connor and his wife Noirin plan to come from South Africa and couldn't believe the room rate of $NZ85.00 included a double and single bed, coffee and tea making facilities and the NZ Herald delivered each morning!! The committee is now meeting more frequently and working hard to put this Convention together successfully in a short time frame. We are planning particularly to encourage junior magicians to perform with a 50% subsidy on their registration fee if they enter and perform in the competitions. The registration fee will include all morning and afternoon teas and three lunches provided by Waipuna Lodge. Start making your plans now!!!! ------------------------------------- 13. John Calvert is Pure Magic ------------------------------------- Message from Paul Ruben (US) I might add on another note, that as past 3 time president of I.B.M. rings in California I personally brought in John Calvert to Ring 313. John is one of the most charming and delightful men you could ever meet. At his age don't challenge him to a fight as he is still a tall and most erect and fit man in his late 80's I believe. To be around Mr. Calvert is to be in the presence of brilliance and genius. His air of presence fills a room. I had the pleasure to have dinner with John and his gorgeous bride and he is so willing to share his friendship and magic with all. A breath of fresh air. If he will be in Las Vegas for an evening seminar I will probably fly in just to be with a master. One of the last of another time and I am sorry to say, dying breed. Perhaps the very young will not understand what I mean, but I hope if any have the way and means to see John Calvert, a man I call friend, and desperately look forward to seeing again, they should not miss this. He Is Pure Magic. Please understand I have no financial gain in whether this is a success or not other than the knowing that any magician or performer that spends time with Mr. Calvert can only be better by Osmosis. ------------------------------------- 14. Lance Burton: Master Magician ---------------------------------- Message from Wayne Bernath (US) Oscar host Steve Martin took in the "Lance Burton: Master Magician" show by storm last Friday night after hosting Friday's VIP opening of his private art collection at the Bellagio Gallery of Fine Arts on Friday. He came to the show with a group of people and wanted to meet Lance Burton in The Green Room after the show. Even OJ Simpson was invited to the art exhibit opening at the Bellagio setting off rumors that he was moving to Las Vegas. E-mail Wayne Bernath for photo of Steve Martin and Lance Burton backstage at The Lance Burton Theatre Monte Carlo Resort & Casino. Steve Martin began his career as a comedy magician and commented, "The magic was good and clean. It was fast moving and Lance Burton is so personable." Contact me at (702) 435-7636 or (702) 497-3622 or fax me at (702) 451-7818. ---------------------------------- 17. Sailing To Vancouver ---------------------------------- Message from Wayne Rogers (NZ) I have recently returned from a cruising holiday (as a paying passenger, not a performer) that took Elizabeth and I on the Oriana from Auckland up to Vancouver. While in Vancouver I had the pleasure of presenting a lecture to the members of IBM Ring 92. Around 50 magicians attended the evening. The lecture covered material from my two books "Commercial Chicanery" (now sold out) "Out of The pole Vault" and a set of notes specially prepared for the occasion titled "Sailing To Vancouver". Special thanks to Shawn Farquhar for booking the lecture and saying I was a genius (!!?), and to Greg Dietlein for making all the arrangements on behalf of the club. When you are on holiday and present just one lecture, setting up, presenting and selling can be rather hectic. Shawn kindly stepped in and managed the sales table for me while I concentrated on the lecture. What a bundle of energy that guy is! Vancouver is such a huge place and unfortunately we did not manage to get over to Victoria to visit Tony Eng at Tony's Trick and Joke Shop. We did not have another spare evening to meet the magicians on Vancouver Island. Also Brian Matlin of Perfect Magic was out of town so another opportunity was lost. We will just have to visit again. Next year I am planning a lecture tour of the UK. Morley Budden of Kaymar Magic in Essex is handling the arrangements. Morley can be contacted at morley@kaymarmagic.fsnet.co.uk ---------------------------------- 18. Pinocchio's Nose ---------------------------------- Message from Wayne Rogers (NZ) The latest new effect to be marketed by New Zealand's Chicane Enterprises is Pinocchio's Nose. This item based on the "Appearing Pole" system was published in my book "Out Of The Pole Vault" and has been in my children's' act for about 4 years. The plot goes like this . . . After the famous puppet Pinocchio was finished, there was a small piece of wood left over . . . When the audience tells "lies" the wood grows . . . Just like Pinocchio's Nose! What follows, depending on the performer, can be up to 10 minutes of entertainment as the children line up to tell lies and try to make the piece of wood grow. Eventually the small piece of wood grows to 5 foot long. Unlike other "pole" type props Pinocchio's Nose has solid ends! This is not just another production. The effect is that the wood GROWS! Instruction booklet complete with photographs includes a bonus routine from young New Zealand children's entertainer Rachel Melville. It is also interesting to note that Hank Lee's Magic Factory in their advertising, describe a different presentation that is not in the instructions, but very good. English customers contact Morley Budden at Kaymar Magic morley@kaymarmagic.fsnet.co.uk The major American distributor is George Schindler of Show-Biz Services Showbiz10@aol.com US dealers should contact George. Pinocchio's Nose can be viewed on http://www.nzmagic.com/productpg.html#pinocchio Hank lee's reference is http://www.hanklee.net/cgi-bin/quikstore.cgi?product=60.874 Click on "Full Description" Watch for ads in Linking Ring and M-U-M. The Linking Ring will also review the effect. PINOCCHIO'S NOSE The most logical and FUN use of Appearing Pole technology yet And that's the truth! Wayne Rogers PS Due to the fact that I feature this item in my own shows, I reserve the right to restrict sales of Pinocchio's nose to other professional magicians in New Zealand. ---------------------------------- 19. The Orchante Saga #24 ---------------------------------- Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)(UK ex-pat Kiwi) Adventures in Paradise New Caledonia is a French overseas Island Territory, in the South Pacific. It may be different now, but back in the '60s, very few of the people - a melting pot of Melanesian/Polynesian, European French, Indonesian, and Vietnamese - spoke English, (no wonder). In those days, my Sleight of Hand Magic show was performed to music - no patter, so language was never an issue. Because I did not speak French, there would have been a problem with the hypnotism show, except for Gilbert, who spoke fluent English, as well as his native French - (the official language of New Caledonia and Tahiti). After several hours of rehearsing my 'hypnotic induction' technique with Gilbert, he eventually got the into intonation right, and a general idea of my 'patter' during the hour and a half of my performance. The end result was, every word I uttered, Gilbert repeated in French - so fast it seemed like his words were coming out of my mouth (apart from my lips moving out of sync, it would've made a great 'Vent' act). As a Translator, he should have had some sort of speed record. In reality, Gilbert was the hypnotist, I was his 'guiding voice', although the audience didn't think of it that way. It was brilliant - must have been a world first - I've never heard of a Hypnotist show being worked this way, via a Translator, before or since. On Opening Night at the Rex Theatre, I was still a little shaky from the double dose of vaccinations - I guess adrenaline helped to keep me going, and I did have that mountain of velvet curtains to warm me up. Most difficult, was the non-stop 1 1/2 hour, Hypnotic demonstrations. 'THE SHOW MUST GO ON' - it did! "There's no business like ....!!! We arrived in Tahiti on 17th June. To be honest, I don't remember much about the Theatre shows - I know we performed at 'L'Hotel Taaone Resort - I have an old photo, taken from the Show at the hotel, showing me laying on the bed of nails, doing 'The Human Sandwich' bit - with two gorgeous Tahitian Wahines standing on top of me. Tahiti really is beautiful, and so are the women! The most memorable event for me on this, my first visit to this captivating Island, was being taken to a Bar on the Harbour waterfront of Papeete. I've forgotten the name of this Bar, but it had quite an infamous reputation: I know it was featured in a couple of old B/W War films. Perhaps one of you may have been stationed there, or visited the Bar during the Pacific conflict - maybe you remember the name of this legendary Bar. It doesn't exist now - it was gone when I returned two years later. The French have no respect for the beauty of the South Pacific Islands - remember what they did with their nuclear testing on Mururoa Atoll in 1984, with no second thought of World opinion, or the wishes of the inhabitants of the entire South Pacific region. UNFORGIVEABLE! Standing at the Bar, I started - as usual - doing some Close-up magic, which turned into an impromptu show, to a packed crowd of drinkers. They comprised of just about anybody - the flotsam and jetsam of humanity - mixed together with tourists, sailors, fishermen, etc. It was pretty wild! This was a perfect example of being able to entertain, with magic, at the 'drop of a hat' - using anything you could lay your hands on,- coins, cigarettes, toilet roll, a pack of cards you wouldn't spit on (didn't have to - everybody else had, for years). There are dozens of effects you can do, all different, with a thumb tip - always carry one. Right now, as I sit here scribbling this lot out, I'm wearing a t-shirt and a pair of dirty old jeans with the knees worn through - used for knocking around the house and garden. In the right hand pocket, a THUMB TIP! ALWAYS, out of developed habit, when I change trousers, the 'tip' ALWAYS, without fail, goes from one to the other. I'M NEVER WITHOUT IT! Another thing I'll never forget about that Bar, was the Toilet/Lavatories. "Through that door there", I was told on enquiring of the whereabouts. It led into the back yard - enclosed by corrugated iron fencing. Two shallow ditches had been dug, running the length of the yard, 'Ladies' one side, 'Men' on the other. It was a sight to behold - a line of 'blokes' standing, or crouched down, depending on what their particular call of nature happened to be, and a line of women, panties around their ankles (if they were wearing any) on the other side. That WAS 'Life in the raw'. Today, the mental image of that scene is so vivid, at times it seems like it was only yesterday! Wish it were! I have strong memories of going to a Leper Colony to perform my magic show for these most unfortunate people - children, as well as adults - horribly disfigured from this terrible, infective, mainly tropical disease. It was a pleasure to bring a little joy and happiness to these shunned human beings. I still get choked up whenever I think of them. One really has to experience something like this to fully comprehend that old saying "there, but for the Grace of God, go I"!. I feel fortunate - privileged, that I saw Tahiti the way it originally was, before the multi-storied hotels and apartments sprang up. I watched it change, and it broke my heart - another Paradise lost, ruined forever, with concrete and steel. We returned to Noumea from Tahiti on 28th June, 1964. Apart from performing in Gilbert's Nightclub, he had also arranged shows at three villages, somewhere, out in the 'bush'. Talk about 'lost tribes' 'going native', lush primeval jungle, and wild rivers - it was 'true to life' scenes reminiscent of the movie 'The African Queen'. One village could only be reached via a swing bridge, made from vines, which stretched across the river. For those of you who can remember the film 'Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom', there is a fight scene on a swing bridge (it's exactly 10 minutes from the end of the film - I know, I've got the Video, and checked). That gives a pretty good idea of what I'm talking about. We even had porters, I kid you not, to carry the equipment - portable generator, (no electricity where we were going) - the band's speakers, amplifiers, guitars, microphone stands, my stuff, suitcases, lighting, the lot, carried on shoulders over that rickety bridge, which swayed from side to side like a pendulum. You just prayed that the men and equipment wouldn't go tumbling down into the swirling, raging river far below! Compared to this, the bridge, at the infamous London Dome that everyone complained about last year (2000) because it moved slightly (that made me laugh), was set solid in concrete! - Bloody wimps!. The most enjoyment I got was performing impromptu magic for the kids (and adults) on the village path-ways and road-side stalls of these far off islands. The simplest 'trick' was, to their eyes, pure magic - the wide-eyed look of bewilderment and wonder on their faces, was a joy to behold; to them you were some sort of 'god', a witchdoctor supreme. In the remote villages of Mexico, China, South America, Papua/New Guinea, and with the Aborigines in the top end of outback Australia, the reaction was always the same. Performing sleight of hand with anything they were familiar with, such as small nuts, stones off the road, cigarettes, bottle-tops, matches etc., (not fancy manufactured equipment) only added to their wonderment. So, my first overseas trip came to an end. For most, the only experience of a lifetime - for me, the South Sea Islands, to which I returned many times, and the rest of the World - still beckoned. I left Noumea on the 10th July 1964, to go home - NEW ZEALAND - MY OWN ISLAND PARADISE! ------------------------------------- 20.
