Editors Message ------------------------------------- Message from Alan Watson - The Magic One Danny Archer to lecture in New Zealand - refer contents items 15 & 16 His lecture has received rave reviews from all who has seen it due to the variety of material it features. It's more stand-up than close-up and it features strong magic with cards, coins, balls, self-working effects, comedy and mentalism. There are some really great tricks and some really devious methods. It is NOT a dealer demo, and all the effects are fully described in his lecture notes and are NOT available for sale. Danny is planning to present his lecture in Auckland, Palmerton North, Wellington and Christchurch in early October. When all details have been finalised they will be posted to MagicNZ e-zine. New Zealand magicians please e-mail me where you are performing in the July school holidays? Check out George Stasinopoulos of Adelaide Magic Factory new web site: www.users.bigpond.com/adlmagic They are also selling folding NZ 20c and NZ 20c shells. Michael Woolf wants to thank those many people who have sent kind and positive words about "Magicana" Magazine. He's hard at work on the next issue which will have a full report on the Melbourne Convention including interviews with Rene Lavand, Tina Lenert, Ross Skiffington and Jim Morrison; also featured will be the next in Bernard Reid's series of International Portraits - this time featuring Mike Bishop of Bermuda. Several new advertisers have come aboard as well and Michael would like to remind all contributors and advertisers that material for the August-September issue is now due. Mind blowing lectures ---------------------------------- Message From Paul Romhany This was without a doubt one of the most enjoyable, fun and mind-blowing lectures I have attended. Harvey Berg has such a natural and warm personality, and his effects and methods really are refreshing. Now I like to think I'm up with the play as I study and read a lot, eating and breathing cards most of the time, but this man had many new approaches, many of which were so damn simple that it almost seemed like real magic. I, like everybody else at the lecture was fooled badly all night. Anybody willing to take a little time (not much needed) to learn just two of the items would have material that would leave any audience, including magicians, believing in magic. Leave your finger flicking at home folks; this is stuff we could all do. There was something here for everybody. For those that wanted to learn 'systems' to those who wanted strong, easy to do, commercial magic, it was all here. No finger flicking, just good, solid material. To finish the night Harvey performed and explained his book test ... again, the effect floored us all, and the method so simple. This is a lecture for the amateur to the professional, for those working restaurants, close-up to mentalism, to say the least it is highly recommended. ---------------------------------- 3. My month-long book tour of America ---------------------------------- Message from Richard Webster On my month-long book tour of America, I visited Chicago, Toronto, New York, San Francisco, Seattle, Los Angeles, San Diego and Denver. Because the book I was promoting (Palm Reading for Beginners) is not as newsworthy as some of my earlier books the tour was more relaxed, and I had time to catch up with magicians in every city. I also visited three magic shops: Magic Moments in Toronto, Misdirections in San Francisco and Market Place Magic in Seattle. I spent an extremely enjoyable evening with Joe and Melissa Pons, owners of Misdirections. We had dinner with some local magicians: Dennis Fox, Allen Gittelson, David Sament and Patrick Martin. Patrick is a full-time professional who will be working at the Olympic Games in Sydney later this year. I also had an enjoyable meal with Sheila Lyons and Darryl Beckmann, owners of Market Place Magic in Seattle. I don't usually have the opportunity to visit magic shops, and it was great to spent time with such enthusiastic promoters of magic. While on the tour I did lectures at all five Learning Annex's (Toronto, New York, San Francisco. Seattle and San Diego) and had magicians attend every one. There were also magicians at many of my talks in bookstores. My publicist couldn't believe how many people I knew everywhere we went. As expected, there were less opportunities for publicity than in previous years. However, there were several press articles, including a rather strange one in the Toronto Sun which is now on the web: http://www.canoe.ca/LifewiseHeartLove/0628_hands.html I also did a small amount of radio and TV: WPHM, KFTY-TV, KSCO, Life's Journey, Erskine Overnight, The Louis Free Show, From USA Live, Edge of Reality and KSTP-AM. My one hour interview with Erskine can be heard on: erskineovernight.com. When I was on his show last year, it was syndicated to some sixty stations across the US. He has more than doubled that in the last twelve months, and I predict that his show will be even bigger than the Art Bell Show in the next couple of years. My tour ended in Denver. I had a wonderful evening with Mark and April Strivings at a micro-brewery called Hops. Mark is a full-time magician, hypnotist and magic dealer. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to catch up with the PsiClones. I am proud of my honorary membership in this association and was sorry to miss seeing them on this trip. I slept all the way home, so was able to get straight into the emails and correspondence that had accumulated over the last month. Hopefully, I'll be on top of all of them by the time I leave for Europe in three months. ---------------------------------- 4. One of the greatest minds in magic has passed away ---------------------------------- Message from Wittus Witt Werry A legend has come to an end On Monday, 19th June 2000 one of the greatest minds in magic has passed away: Werner Geissler-Werry, born in April 13th 1925. Werry has invented several hundreds of tricks amongst them famous "classics" like the "Vanishing Coke Bottle", appearing canes and candles made of sheet plastic (long before Fantasio), Durania Multiplying Billiard Balls, appearing liquid in a glass and many, many more. And, Werry was publisher and (in later years) editor of his magic magazine "Magische Welt". Founded in 1952 it is/was the longest running independent magic magazine in Germany. In 1973 he received the Golem statue (from Prague) for the best European magic journal. Next year he would have completed volume 50! Werry was a man full of power. Almost all his life he loved to study and loved to learn so many things. He became a professional book printer, he got to know chemistry and physiques, and he became a perfect expert at Paranormal Psychology. Werry had built a professional "trick factory" which was unique in Germany. He opened a large magic studio way back in the early 70s and published several books on magic. Werry had influenced me in many ways like no other magician has done. It is hard to believe that he is no more but I am sure he will never be forgotten. ---------------------------------- 5. David Copperfield flying poster ---------------------------------- Message from Wittus Witt At my friend' s house, George Daily, I saw a very nice poster of David Copperfield he used on his tour while he was in your country. It is the poster, which shows him flying. Would you possibly see a way for to get one of those??? I have almost all posters he used in Europe and would very much like to add this to the collection. Interesting to read Barry's convention views ---------------------------------- Message from Peter Marucci Barry Govan writes: << My USA tour went very well and had to reprint my new notes << Several times. Since I'm going to assume Barry considers Canada part of the US, I'll take it that he means us, too. And he's right -- about the tour, at least. Barry lectured to our local Ring and the general comments were that he was about the best we had had in ages. Others may do more skilful sleights, but Barry's stuff was the stuff you would use. It was also interesting to read Barry's convention views; what a refreshing change from the usual reports where the hotel was just this side of the Garden of Eden and the performers/lecturers were all perfect, the best ever, and only a step down from angels. We all know the real world isn't like that -- but it's good to hear someone say it from time to time! ---------------------------------- 7. Coloured flash paper ---------------------------------- Message from Jack Poulter A>------------------------------------- A>7. Looking to purchase coloured flash paper A>------------------------------------- A>Message from Ross Harlick - ross@ak.planet.gen.nz A>I'm looking to purchase coloured flash paper, preferably green and red. A>I have tried local and overseas dealers with no results. Any ideas? Since flash paper is usually stored wet for safety reasons, I think that one could dye it using food colouring. ------------------------------------- 8. Successful lecture tour on Psychicomedy ------------------------------------- Message from David J O'Connor Reading last weeks bulletin # 27, Peter Marucci spoke about his recent successful lecture tour on Psychicomedy, The Funny side of Mentalism. If you are looking for some comic relief to your mental programme then I highly recommend Peters booklet. I recently received a copy of these previously unpublished notes, which as Peter himself states, will definitely entertain your patrons. The simplicity of method and preparation has all the elements to mystify your audience, but more importantly allow them to laugh and be entertained. I can't wait to try his "Cynthia" The Psychic Seagull Prediction. I'm normally serious about mentalism, but can see the advantages of adding some humour to our acts. I can highly endorse this booklet. ------------------------------------- 9. Tuesday night was guest at IBM Ring 102 ------------------------------------- Message from Burns Scandrett Just back from Australia. I spent four days in Melbourne, some business; mostly pleasure so never had time to contact magicians. On to Sydney for over a week, again business and R & R, with a cabaret engagement in Double Bay, Monday night. Tuesday night was guest at IBM Ring 102 meeting and show, where I enjoyed meeting old friends and making new ones. I stopped with Alfred Hayes in his magnificent penthouse apartment in Arncliffe, near the Airport. He asked me to pass on best wishes to his NZ friends and plans to attend the Christchurch convention, Easter next year. ------------------------------------- 13. Update on Pat Sweeney ------------------------------------- Message from Burns Scandrett On my return, I rang Pat Sweeney who is now home from major surgery. He is well but very tired and instructed to take it easy for the next three months. Most overseas readers will know of Pat (aka Paul Marcus) a prolific inventor / author, involved in cards and mentalism. (Corinda's "13 Steps to mentalism", Abracadabra magazine, etc. etc.) ------------------------------------- 14. As the old song goes "little things mean a lot." ------------------------------------- Message from Peter Marucci - Showtimecol@aol.com In fact, some of the little "bits" you use are often remembered long after the trick they go with is forgotten. So here is a collection of those bits of business that can turn a routine routine into a memorable moment. I have used almost all of these with success; however, depending on your performing style, some may or may not work for you. Feel free to browse and take your pick. Miser's Dream The Miser's Dream has been called one of the greatest tricks in magic. After all, who wouldn't want to be able to pull money out of the air? But does your audience really believe you're doing that? The following will at least plant a seed of doubt in their minds. When you have finished your regular routine, dump the coins out of the container and into your hand. Jingle them, point out that they are real, and let them cascade from your hand back into the container -- all but one. Show the single coin, comment on the fact that it is real and say to someone in the front row, "Take a look for yourself," and toss the coin to her. When she goes to give it back to you, say, "No, that's all right. You keep it. I can make lots more." Then move on to your next trick. Here in Canada, we have one-dollar and two-dollar coins. I use the one-dollar "loonie" (so called for the picture of the loon on the reverse). So it costs me a buck at every show. Small price to pay for the gasps of astonishment you'll hear. And believe me, they'll remember you; after all, how many people have your spectators met who give away money? The Leprecoin If you have to ditch something in your pocket, do you still use the move as an excuse to go to your pocket and pull out some invisible "woofle dust"? (Presumably, it comes from dusty woofles.) It's a weak move at best because it's not logical and, believe me, your audience knows that even if they're too polite to say anything. So, hightail it off to your local coin dealer and get an Irish coin; I use a 50-pence piece -- it's about the size of a U.S. half dollar, seven-sided and has a bird on one side and an Irish harp on the other. Put this in your pocket so, when you have to ditch the whatever, you explain that you need your magic Irish coin to make the magic work. Reach into your pocket, ditch the whatever and bring out the Irish coin, describing it as your "Leprecoin." Use it as a mini wand to make the magic work and leave it one the table for inspection. It fascinates the audience and, again, ensures that you will be remembered. After all, you aren't like every other magician, going to his pocket for a handful of invisible woofle dust. Gag Bag Plus Van Cleve's Gag Bag is a wonderful prop: A bag about nine inches square that changes colour every time you turn it inside out, for a total of five changes. Unfortunately, most routines used with it are nowhere as good as the prop. I hope this one is a little better. Start with the bag on its last colour change and put a modelling balloon in it. Working backwards, turn the bag inside out, each time adding some dog paraphernalia -- a bone, a brush, a chew toy and so on. To perform, show the bag, offering to magically produce a dog. Turn the bag inside out and discover, not a dog, but a bone. "Well, we know the dog's in the area. Let's start over." As you turn the bag inside out, of course, it's a different colour from where you started and you find a chew toy. "Well, we're getting close. Let's start over." And you turn the back inside out -- to yet another colour -- and another piece of dog equipment. Continue this until you come to the balloon, where you announce that you have found the dog. The audience will point out you haven't, so you blow up the balloon, make a dog and give it to a member of the audience -- whom you then use as a volunteer in your next trick. Whatizzit? Finally, here's one that I haven't used because I don't know what it could be used for -- although I have no doubt that one or more of you will be able to put this to great use. Blow up a 260 black balloon fully and tie it off. Take two white cardboard tubes (the cores of toilet paper rolls are ideal) and slip one over each end of the black balloon. You now have an inflated rubber wand about five feet long. It looks funny -- but what do you do with it? I'd like to hear from you. Peter Marucci 270 St. Andrew St. East Fergus, Ontario, Canada N1M 1R1 ------------------------------------- 15. Danny Archer's Working Alone Tour ------------------------------------- Danny Archer hails from Denver, CO and is an experienced magician whose material has been gaining tons of acclaim from magicians. His marketed effects (Birthday Banner, Lucky Lotto, Eye Exam, Grandpa's Deck, Balls and Net, to name a few) have become smash hits worldwide. His lecture is chock full of solid audience tested magic. Danny will be a featured lecture and performer at the 2000 Blackpool convention in England and will lecture all over the UK and Scotland. The focus is on close-up and stand-up magic and Danny teaches you how to make all your magic play big. All the effects are fully explained and illustrated in his lecture notes (not a "dealer demo") and use simple and engaging props, with devastating results. Some highlights are; Par for the Course a mental routine using golf as a theme (one of the Tricks of the Year in Syzyrgy magazine and featured on their video tape). Balls A sleight of hand effect with rubber balls. They appear, vanish, and change colour in a fast paced routine. Lost & Smelled a selected card is shuffled into the deck by the spectator. You sniff out the selection. Triple Threat an incredible no prop version of Mental Epic. Maximum magic, minimum work. Barrel of Fun! is a real world practical marked coin in nest routine, with everything examinable! Quiz Show a signed card appears in the card box. No palm and palm handling taught. Magic Jeopardy is a hilarious stand up comedy routine that can be adapted to any audience. A lock and key trick with ungimmicked props! Archer Shuffle a stand up, full deck false shuffle that you can learn in minutes. Outfoxed a stunner! You reveal five cards that have been MENTALLY selected by the audience. ------------------------------------- 16. Don't miss Danny's entertaining lecture ------------------------------------- Be sure not to miss Danny's entertaining, exciting and informative lecture. You'll learn powerful, practical, innovative magic! Let's see what others have said: "Your lecture was well received, particularly by those seeking performable and entertaining magic for laymen in a real world environment. I personally left the lecture with four items which I shall utilize, which is a higher number than normal for me. Often I admire the skill of a lecturer, but find nothing that I can actually use in a performance for laymen. Not so with your lecture". Robert Bluemle Scottsdale, AZ "The lecture was terrific. Nice mix of stuff and nice mix of skill level. Great job!" Mark Strivings, mentalist "This was one of the most fulfilling and practical lectures I ever attended. There was magic for the close-up and stand-up worker; magic for the coin aficionado and card worker; magic for the philosopher and move-monkey; magic for the manipulator and mentalist. In short, there was magic for EVERYONE!" Mike Guisti Fresno, CA ------------------------------------- 17. Neptune Theatre in central Singapore ------------------------------------- Message from Guy Cater It's 11:30am Sunday 2nd July and I arrived home from the airport half an hour ago. Just returned from one of the silly one-night gigs in Singapore. Hell of a long way to go for just one 45 minute show!! It was for the Hitachi Electronics Company and was held in the Neptune Theatre in central Singapore. There were 2500 in the audience. Great Show. Last week here in Auckland, Katherine Snell wrote an article about me and my upcoming season (6 nights) at the Power Station .. it runs from this Tuesday 4th July till Sunday 9th July) Tickets are $20 from Ticketek but I have a whole heap at just $5 each if anyone is interested. The Sunday News article was good in that it had an enormous publicity head and shoulders shot of me plus a smaller photo of the show in action but unfortunately she did get a couple of points wrong. I said Hypnosis was not dangerous and could do no damage ... she said that I said the opposite. Also, one of the features of my show is that every subject remembers everything that has happened when the show is over ... she said they would forget!!!! You just cannot trust the media. Lets hope the article that is coming up in the Listener is more correct. Clare Naden interviewed me for nearly two hours the other day so we will just have to keep our fingers crossed on that one. Still .. with The Sunday News, The Listener, The New Idea (published photos of the Shortland Street stars that I hypnotised during the TV2 International Laugh Festival), two spots on the Mary Lambie Good Morning TV1 show and interviews this week on BFM and Radio Hauraki... I can't really complain about all this publicity. I return to Singapore the first week of September for just one show again and then leave to go back to Singapore on the 1st October and will remain there until 30th January 2001. From there I fly to Seattle, USA to attend a Conference of World Stage Hypnotists. I'll return to New Zealand the 2nd week of February 2001, just in time to commence the University Orientation Tour. ------------------------------------- 21.
