Message by Paul Romhany
Editor Vanish Magic Magazine
It
is hard to believe Magic New Zealand ezine has been going
for 25 years and MagicNZ even longer. It has become a weekly
source of news and magic information for thousands of magicians
around the world connecting us all together through the
work of Alan Watson.
I
was around in New Zealand when Magic NZ started and without
the support of Alan and Michele I wouldn't be where I am
today, and Vanish magazine wouldn't be where it is.
MagicNZ helped advance magic in New Zealand more than any
other organization, bringing in the best performers and
lecturers in the world and sharing and helping countless
young magicians. Over 30 years ago they hosted Marvyn and
Carol Roy, a lecture that was to change my life.
Thank
you Alan for your devotion and encouragement to magic both
in New Zealand and world wide. Now MagicNZ is coming to
a close I'll be forced to read Vanish Magic Magazine.

TRICS
Magic Convention Reports on the Magic Word Podcast
As
we wind down to the last New Zealand e-zine, so we are completing
our last of the year convention reports. We have reported
on more than a half dozen magic conventions over 2024 and
we expect to attend and report on more next year. But this
weekend we are in Charlotte, North Carolina, for TRICS,
hosted by Scott Robinson. This year's Guest of Honor is
Paul Gertner. Other performers/lecturers include Shoot Ogawa,
Bernardo Sedlacek, Ed Ellis, Rocco, and a host of other
outstanding performers both seasoned and new. This intimate
close-up convention always promises some unique, great magic,
and they always deliver.
There
will be two separate reports from this convention beginning
Friday night after we have had time to record and process
Thursday night's activities and all-day Friday events. So,
no podcast will be posted until late Friday night (Eastern
Time) on November 8th. But when it is posted, along with
photos, convention schedules, and more, then you can listen
online here: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/868-trics-2024-days-one-and-two
Of course, you can always listen wherever you get your podcasts.
And
as we close out the successful years of Alan Watson's dedication
to excellence, I want to again add my congratulations and
humble appreciation for him publishing these podcast updates.
And, may I also make one last financial appeal for your
help to support The Magic Word Podcast. Your donations and
monthly/annual pledges help keep the podcast going by offsetting
our many expenses for domain hosting, hardware and software,
convention expenses, podletter publication, and much, much
more. There is a DONATE button on the top of each page of
the website at https://themagicwordpodcast.com which you
can click to easily make your financial commitment. Thank
you in advance for your support, and thank you again, Alan
Watson, for your tireless efforts.

9. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article 176
-------------------------------------
Message by Paul Stone (US)
This
first week of November 2024 will be long remembered by millions
of people around the world for a certain event that took
place in USA, and which coincided sadly with the final edition
of Magic New Zealand after 25 years of bringing the latest
magic news to thousands of magicians across the globe.
In
my last couple of articles, I have written about a few of
the magicians and magical friends that have impacted my
own career but, in doing so, I have now realised that it
would take several more editions of Magic New Zealand to
come even close to mentioning everyone who deserves to be
singled out.
So,
I'll have to settle on doing so in my forthcoming book 'NO
STONE UNTURNED' which I have started working on, and which
will be launched at the Blackpool Magicians Club Convention
in February 2026.
There
are 50 years of photographs and stories to recount of so
many wonderful performers, that it is a massive undertaking,
but I'm determined not to miss anyone out. And, as a bonus,
there will be links to priceless, never before seen, video
footage of some of the truly great magicians that I have
had the privilege of working with or producing in my shows.
In
the last couple of weeks I have spent a few hours going
through photos and show fliers and I am now more excited
than ever about this project. It has certainly brought back
some wonderful memories.
Whilst
I wasn't intending to name any individuals in this final
article, there are two people whom it would be remiss of
me not to mention, as they have both played a significant
part in my 'magic' life.
The
first is John Fisher. I first met John more than fifty years
ago at Ken Brooke's Wardour Street Studio in London's West
End, and we immediately became firm friends. John's influence
on the world of magic is well documented, as both Producer
of the Paul Daniels TV Shows, and also the outstanding 'Best
of Magic' TV Series, which in my opinion stands out as the
top magic TV series ever produced.
John
is a consummate author and has written several fabulous
books featuring iconic stars from the world of entertainment.
These include 'Heroes of Magic' which pays tribute to many
of the greatest magicians of our time, and is a 'must read'.
The
other person is more than likely someone that most magicians
would not have heard of. His name was Bill Thompson. I first
met Bill when he was the manager of a toy shop called 'Hobbies'
in Liverpool City Centre. He subsequently moved to Blackpool,
and opened a small magic & joke shop on the promenade
on Blackpool's 'Golden Mile'. Then a few years later Bill
opened a magic studio named the 'House of Secrets'.
The
'House of Secrets' could in no way be described as a fancy
place, it was located on the second floor of an old building
in an unfashionable part of Blackpool - come to think of
it, there is no fashionable part of Blackpool!
But
what Bill's studio lacked in surroundings was made up for
in spades by his warmth, kindness and the sheer magical
knowledge that he openly shared with dozens of pros, aspiring
magicians, and hobbyists alike.
Bill
was a brilliant artist and designer and he helped me on
numerous corporate events with everything from logos to
entire set designs. And he wouldn't ever take any payment
for his time and significant talent. He was a true and loyal
friend, and together with the many other people he helped
and supported, I miss him greatly.
Prior
to my meeting Bill, he had been the manager of a small but
well known magic & joke shop called the 'Wizard's Den'
in Moorfields, also located on the outskirts of Liverpool's
City Centre.
I
mention this in closing because it was in the 'Wizard's
Den' that, as a 13 year old, the then manager showed me
a copy of 'Abracadabra', the world's only weekly magic magazine,
and specifically an advert for 'Ken Brooke's Magic Place'
in London's West End. That was the start of my magical journey,
which I am still on to this day!
The
last words must, of course, go to Alan Watson who, with
his lovely wife Michele, has masterminded and expertly produced
Magic New Zealand for so many years. Huge Congratulations
Alan, on this amazing achievement, and one which I am proud
to have been involved with for the past three years.
Now
put your feet up, and have a well-earned rest!

Magic
New Zealand - The Last One!
Dear
Alan, dear readers,
As
this journey comes to an end, I want to thank you, Alan,
and all of you, dear readers, for the time I was able to
spend with you here.
Alan,
I admire you for your dedication, your love for the art
of magic, and your perseverance. These newsletters have
been both - current information and fascinating insights
into our craft. I truly appreciate that our contact information
is not "sold" but that the newsletters are archived
in Ask Alexander for future reference.
What
more can I say, except a heartfelt thank you to everyone
who contributed to this unique service. Thank you, thank
you, thank you.
And
finally, here's the latest update from my Bellachini Museum.
Last week, we participated in the big "See for Free"
museum day. A total of 47 museums, including the Bellachini
Museum, took part in this event. From 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.,
all museums offered free admission. In Hamburg, around 77,000
visitors took advantage of this opportunity, with the Bellachini
Museum welcoming approximately 800 visitors. This brings
our total number of visitors to around 4,000 since the museum's
opening two years ago.
I
look forward to welcoming you soon!
Stay
healthy, everyone.
Warmest
regards from the beautiful city of Hamburg,

"Disappearing!"
Disappearing
is, in my opinion, the most difficult of all magic effects.
I made a list of all the stage illusions that I have performed
over my 75 years in magic, and there were 15 appearances,
7 torture tricks, 6 transposition/transformations, 6 levitations,
and 2 escapes.
But
there were zero disappearances! Not even one.
On
stage I have magically produce myself, my assistants, the
Master of Ceremonies, corporate executives, doves, rabbits,
dogs, cats, a hamster, the Frankenstein monster, the Wizard
of Oz, the Easter Bunny, a Gorilla, Santa Claus. But I never
made anything big disappear.
To
be fair, David Copperfield has become rich and famous because
he has made things disappear: a Learjet aircraft, the Orient
Express train dining car
even the Statue of Liberty.
But I'm not David Copperfield.
Blackstone,
Jr made an elephant appear primarily through misdirection.
By the time it appeared, the audience couldn't think of
where it might have been hiding.
Why
is it harder to make something (such as an elephant) disappear?
Because at the instant it vanishes, the audience knows to
look for where it might be hiding.
George
Schindler teaches a wonderful magic class all about making
things disappear. He shows samples of magic props that could
make things vanish, and claims that everything that disappeared
wound up in Hoboken, New Jersey!
But
the Magic New Zealand E-zine archives will not be going
to Hoboken. Alan says that they will become part of the
wonderful data base of "Ask Alexander."
If
you have enjoyed reading my column here, I think you will
also enjoy my podcast, "Tales from the Fantastic Magic
Center."
And
now, this column will disappear.

12. Yes We Caan! - John Carey #251
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
The
card at any number plot is extremely popular among magicians
in recent times. There are many versions in print. Some
are very good, while others seem way too convoluted, in
my honest opinion. The version we will discuss here is simple,
practical and strong. Did I mention it's also nearly self
working too?
Ask
one member of the group you are working for to think of
a number, not too small, but not too big. Say between ten
and twenty, but make it high and difficult. This is a devious
ruse of Dani DaOrtiz to steer your spectator towards a high
number in the range.
Suggest
that you get a few of the group involved with shuffling
the deck. Push off a group of five cards from the top of
the deck and drop them in front of a spectator. Repeat this
twice more, dropping two more groups of five cards on top
of the tabled cards. Finally drop three more cards on top
of all. Do this casually and of course silently. Eighteen
cards are on the table. Make two further packets of cards
in front of two other people, casually dropping cards down
in front of them like before, the quantity not being important
though.
Ask
the three people to shuffle their packets and to then table
them. Then have spectator three drop their packet on top
of spectator two's. Then direct attention to your first
helper and almost as an afterthought ask them to take a
peek at the face/bottom card of their packet and to put
the thought of that card into their mind. Request they drop
their packet on top of the other tabled cards and square
up. Pick up the deck and execute a casual Jay Ose false
cut. Maybe even have a spectator do the cut on themselves
- a Jim Swain idea.
Direct
attention to the person thinking of a number and ask them
to reveal it? If they say eighteen, you are of course golden.
Seventeen too is good. Simply count down and reveal the
mental selection at the thought of number or show the next
card as the selection. However let's deal with other numbers.
We will use a delightful ruse/ swindle I saw Lewis Jones
use to displace cards sleightlessly. Let's say the number
thought of is fifteen. That means we need to displace the
top three cards. Simply push off the top three cards and
flip them face-up.
Take
them into the right hand in a spread condition and ask if
the selection is near the top? Once they confirm it isn't
flip the rest of the deck face-up and push off a couple
of cards from the face, asking this time if it's near the
bottom. Place the right hand's three cards casually onto
the face of the deck and turn it face-down. Do the above
nonchalantly and it flies.
If
nineteen is called I like to show the top card, flip the
deck face-up and spread off a few of the face cards, secretly
Hofzinser culling any random card to the rear/top of the
deck. Turn the deck face-down and table it. All that's left
is to deal and count down to the thought of number and reveal
the selection with style!
Notes:
A very big thank you to my friend J.K Hartman for the great
suggestion of having the selection made in a hands off fashion.
Originally I assembled the shuffled packets together with
a break under eighteen cards and did a dribble force. Jerry's
suggestion is far stronger.

Message by Romany
Dear
everyone!
I
wanted to finally jump in to say hello and goodbye for now!
You
may remember that I wrote a column during covid but stopped
because although many of you loved hearing about my adventures
locked up in the Buddhist center - getting caught baking
bread in someone else's kitchen (covid rules) and other
misdemeanours - I was not doing any magic so I had nothing
much to say!
I
am so glad to say I am back performing on cruise ships,
conventions, and wherever anyone hires me! Phew! www.romanymagic.com
And
for all of you who enjoyed my memoir Spun Into Gold - The
Secret Life of a Female Magician (available on Amazon worldwide,
hint-hint!), I have wonderful news of the strange but delightful
meeting of magic worlds. Wittus Witt, the acclaimed German
magician who writes the Bellachini Museum column here, read
my book and magically translated and published it recently
as 'Zu Gold gesponnen - Das geheimnisvolle Leben einer Zauberkunstlerin.'
He has made it into a beautiful edition with photos and
everything!
Last
week I went over to Hamburg to finally meet Wittus, see
his exhibition 'Magic in the hands of Women' and do a show.
Lots of fun! And then! I went to visit my German juggler
ex-husband, (the one I left to go to Las Vegas to study
magic!) and spent time with his
street-performing family, including doing a show in their
community theatre. After a break, Martin read from my book
in German and we got a huge applause for managing to stay
'family' after all this time! It truly was a magical turning
of the circle of life!
It
is time for me to say goodbye until we meet again!
Wishing
Alan and his family and all of you, much happiness and fun
with magic!
PS:
You never know how life if going to turn out and if you
need a reminder of that, ooh I have just the book for you!
