Message by Nick Lewin (US)
I
can't remember the exact year Magic New Zealand entered
my world, it was at the height of the Masked Magician outrage,
my wife Susan said, "You should check out this little
ezine, it has all the latest magic news." I started
reading it that day and have been reading it every week
since. Alan Watson, you have done an amazing job steering
this ship for so many years. Thank you.
The
first time I met Alan Watson was when I disembarked a cruise
ship in New Zealand. I was going to be presenting a magic
lecture in Auckland and waiting at the airport to greet
me was Alan. We became friends at first sight, to say we
instantly clicked is an understatement. I stayed with Alan
and his wife Michele during that visit and we all became
very good friends indeed.
During
my stay Alan took me to visit Richard Webster where we enjoyed
a cup of tea. The topic of writing came up, and I disclosed
that I had a book published in 1978 called "Sleight
of Crime: Mayhem, Murder & Mystery". I commented
that I was suffering the world's longest case of writer's
block. Richard told me I should be writing about magic.
Alan immediately said, "If you write it, I will print
it in Magic New Zealand." I said, "Yes!"
We had another cup of tea and three weeks later I had my
first column. These two gentlemen changed my life more than
a little.
Susan
and I visited New Zealand two years later and enjoyed a
delightful stay with Alan and Michele. We ate Hokey Pokey
Ice Cream and Butter Chicken Pies and generally had a blast.
Best of all my birthday fell during our vacation and Richard
threw a party, and I gave a very special magic performance.
For
many years I wrote my column for Magic New Zealand and its
weekly schedule was a perfect training for finding my writing
chops. Thank you Alan for your tireless work over the years
delivering all things magic! You must be very proud to have
created this monumental archive of digital magic.

5. Living Legends Perform at FISM 2025
-------------------------------------
Message by Joan Caesar (Canada)
From
the FISM website and Wikipedia
Imagine
watching the best of the best perform at one convention.
Imagination comes to life July 14-19 in Torino, Italy where
Walter Rolfo and his crew are gathering the artists you
want to see.
These are the first 6 artists who were announced. More in
the next, (and sadly last) e-zine.
Shin
Lim will be the well-deserved Guest of Honour at FISM. He
has won many awards including World Champion of Card Magic
at FISM2015, he fooled Penn and Teller and won the championship
at America's Got Talent.
Lim began headlining a long-term Las Vegas residency in
the Terry Fator Theatre at the Mirage Casino Hotel in October
2019. In 2020 he was on tour with The Illusionists, and
also had his own United States tour the same year. Lim made
numerous guest appearances on talk shows including The Tonight
Show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and The Today Show.
Mac
King will perform a one-man show, lecture, and hold an interview.
His is my go-to show in Las Vegas. I've seen it several
times and I've enjoyed it just as much each visit. Comedy
and magic, the perfect combination and Mac is a delight.
From
Mac's website: Acclaimed by MAGIC Magazine as the #1 comedy
magician in the world today, Mac has been named "Magician
of the Year" by the Magic Castle in Hollywood, broken
a Guinness World Record, appeared on seven TV specials for
NBC-TV, been inducted into the Las Vegas Hall of Fame at
UNLV, rocked the audience on "The Late Show with David
Letterman," tore it up three times on "Penn &
Teller's Fool Us", and his book from Random House just
entered its 12th printing.
In
January 2000, King began his current one-man show, The Mac
King Comedy Magic Show in Las Vegas, where, over the last
23 plus years, he has performed nearly 10,000 shows to more
than two million fans. This makes him almost certainly the
longest-running one-man show in the history of Las Vegas.
Peter
Marvey has been working in Asia for years. He's one of the
world's most innovative and celebrated illusionists. Known
for his innovative illusions and exceptional manipulative
skills, he has thrilled audiences worldwide with his creativity.
He
will lecture, perform his manipulation act and join a panel
on the intellectual property in magic. What a treat to see
him after many, many years.
From
Wikipedia: Marvey studied, designed and practiced for seven
years to create an illusion called "Dream Flying",
which made his name in the magic business and became a signature
piece. He made it possible to fly in bright light, for the
first time in magic's history. To date, Marvey has created
seven different flying illusions, as well as the Flying
Coach, the Levitating Spectators, the Haunted Balloon Basket,
the Flying Screen and other levitation tricks.
Aside
from flying illusions, Marvey has created many levitation
systems. These include the levitation of spectators live
on stage and floating objects which can be watched at close
range. Since 2012 he has created upscale illusions uniting
technology and magic innovations.
Marvey
has won awards in several international magical competitions.
Prince Albert of Monaco presented him with the Golden Wand
trophy in 1996. Marvey received the Merlin Award of the
International Magicians Society in 2002. He won third prize
in the Grand Prix Manipulation category at the 19th world
championship of the in 1994 in Yokohama, Japan. He was Swiss
National Champion for 1993-1995.
Joshua
Jay will present his new lecture, exploring his revolutionary
approach to card magic. Using just an ordinary deck, he'll
perform and explain a completely new system that redefines
card magic. This is Joshua's most advanced work to date,
featured in his upcoming book, and FISM attendees will be
the first to experience it. Known for his original brand
of magic, Joshua Jay has captivated audiences on stages
and television around the globe. He amazed everyone by fooling
Penn & Teller on their hit, Fool Us. Joshua is also
no stranger to FISM, having served as a judge at two past
conventions, and he is the author of several best-selling
books on magic.
He
has performed in over 100 countries and was awarded top
prize at the World Magic Seminar in 1998. He worked with
Penn and Teller on the show Fool Us, and holds a Guinness
World Record for card tricks.
Jay
has designed illusions for stage and screen, including a
collaboration with HBO for Game of Thrones. He was consulted
by the United States Postal Service for the design of the
Magic postage stamp series.
On
January 30, 2016, at the Columbus Magi-Fest, Jay set the
Guinness World Record for Most Selected Cards Found from
a Shuffled Deck in One Minute. He found 21 cards, a record
that still stands.
Jay
has researched what he classifies as "Tragic Magic,"
tricks fatal to magicians, assistants, or spectators. He
has delivered keynote addresses on the history of magic
at museums across the United States, and written an article
on the subject for Gibiciere
Jay
appeared at the 2008 Inaugural Ball for former President
Barack Obama, and has also performed privately for former
President Clinton.
In
2008, Jay and friend Andi Gladwin founded Vanishing Inc.
Magic, a manufacturer and retailer of props for magicians.
Vanishing Inc. is currently one of the largest magic shops
in the world, with warehouse and shipping operations in
the US and Europe.
Jay
majored in creative non-fiction at Ohio State University.
His senior thesis became The Amazing Book of Cards. His
other books include MAGIC: The Complete Course, The Amazing
Book of Cards, Big Magic for Little Hands, and How Magicians
Think: Misdirection, Deception, and Why Magic Matters. He
has authored a dozen books for magicians and served for
12 years as Tricks Editor at MAGIC Magazine. Nearly all
his books have been translated into other languages. He
has also published titles through his company with magician
Andi Gladwin.
Josh
has appeared on many TV shows including Discovery Channel's
Grand Illusions: The Story of Magic, ABC's good Morning
America, Brad Meltzer's Decoded on the History Channel and
Penn and Teller's Fool US
Professor
Richard Wiseman, one of the world's leading experts in the
psychology of magic, will be joining us at World Championship
of Magic FISM Italy 2025. He sounds extremely interesting
from what I've read about him on-line.
Known
for his bestselling books and YouTube videos with over 800
million views, Richard brings a unique perspective to the
world of illusion.
Richard
J. Wiseman is a professor of the public understanding of
psychology at the University of Hertfordshire in the United
Kingdom. He has written several psychology books. He has
given keynote addresses to The Royal Society, The Swiss
Economic Forum, Google and Amazon
From
Wikipedia: Wiseman critically examines and frequent debunks
unusual phenomena, including reports of paranormal phenomena.
He is a fellow of the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry (CSI).
His research has been published in numerous academic journals,
reported at various conferences, and featured on television.
Wiseman
has studied the principles of good and bad luck, publishing
the results in the self-help book The Luck Factor. He shows
that both good and bad luck result from measurable habits.
Wiseman
launched the Dream: ON App at the Edinburgh International
Science Festival 2012. The app is powered by an engine which
constantly monitors and adjusts the behaviour of Dream:
ON; optimizing the experience for the user. When the user
enters the rapid eye movement (REM) stage of sleep where
dreaming is most common, the app delivers unique audio soundscapes
which the subconscious is shown to respond to.
The
app is also a social experiment: in the morning it presents
users with a graph of their movement during the night, allows
users to tag any friends who appeared in their dreams via
Facebook and invites them to post a short description of
their dreams to an experimental "Dream Bank",
creating the world's largest dream experiment
The
Masters Of Magic awarded Wiseman the Golden Grolla award
for his work in psychology and illusion at their 2020 convention.

8. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article 175
-------------------------------------
Message by Paul Stone (US)
So,
just two more weeks to go! I wanted to continue on from
my article last week by mentioning a few more of the special
magicians that I have been fortunate to work with over the
past 40 years.
And
none deserve the title of 'special' more than Hans &
Helga Moretti - The Morettis. What a truly amazing couple
they were, both on and off the stage. On stage, their act
was unique. Their illusions were incredible and their performances
were always exciting.
Their
Cardboard Box illusion, Paper Tree Levitation and Tibetan
Cross were all outstanding, and not forgetting Hans's crossbow
expertise, which not only had audiences on the edge of their
seats, but also when I was producing shows in which they
were featured, regularly gave me palpitations!
Hans
& Helga were show people and pros to their fingertips.
Their stage persona was completely different from who they
actually were as people. When you saw them perform, Hans,
with his bald head and bearskin outfit with a severe and
almost threatening demeanour, and Helga who was a larger
than life character both in size and her outrageous costumes,
both completely commanded the stage. You couldn't take your
eyes off them.
In
reality, they were two of the kindest, sweetest and most
modest performers that I ever had the pleasure of working
with, and we became close friends. They appeared in my shows
and events on at least a couple of dozen occasions, including
three times at the London Palladium Theatre, and they always
delivered, and brought the house down.
I
have many great memories and several unforgettable moments
from working with the Morettis, including a couple where
Hans almost scared me to death, but I wouldn't swop these
experiences for anything. They were quite simply, the best!
(I
will recount these stories in great detail in my book -
yes, I've now started work on it, and it will be available
in approximately 12 months time - I have so many stories
about the fantastic performers I've worked with, and the
shows I've produced around the world - and the title, unsurprisingly
will be 'NO STONE UNTURNED').
Of
course, amongst the names that will be featured in the book
are Fred Kaps and Ken Brooke, both of whom I was lucky to
spend a considerable amount of time with, and who both had
a significant impact on my magical life.
It
would be impossible not to mention Paul Daniels, who I first
met shortly after he made his breakthrough into the big
time after an appearance on the 'Wheeltappers and Shunters
Social Club' TV Show. Paul was a brilliant performer both
on TV, where his prime time show ran for an unbelievable
20 years, and also live on stage. When Paul starred in his
own West End Stage Show at the Prince of Wales Theatre,
I owned the magic shop, 'London's Ace Place' a few doors
down from the theatre on the corner of Leicester Square,
and he often popped in to say hello. Debbie McGee was one
of the two dancers / assistants in that show
and
the rest is history!
I
think if you'd told me 50 years ago when my career performing
magic in clubs around Liverpool began, that I'd have the
opportunity of spending time with and also working with
some of magic's elite, Johnny Paul, Fred Kaps, Reveen, Dai
Vernon, Jay Marshall, David Copperfield, Lance Burton, Siegfried
& Roy, Penn & Teller and Mac King, I'd never have
believed you. So, I consider myself extremely fortunate,
and very grateful.
I
plan to recount stories about my experiences with all these
performers and many more besides in my book (another plug!).
I
wanted to end with a shout out to one of my favourite performers,
MARKO KARVO from Finland. His performance in 'Palladium
Magic' which I produced in 2011 to celebrate 100 years of
magic at the London Palladium Theatre, was without doubt
one of the highlights of my career as a Show Producer.
His
bird act which closed the first half of the show, was superb,
and he received a three minute standing ovation, which is
almost unheard of from a British audience. And what made
it extra special for me was that I was emceeing the show
and witnessed it first hand on that iconic Palladium stage.
Wonderful memories!

9. Magic Museum Bellachini - Episode 95
---------------------------------------------
Message by Wittus Witt (Germany)
As mentioned before, last Saturday the fantastic English
magician Romany Romany was my guest. She gave a wonderful
guest performance at my Museum Bellachini as the finale
to the exhibition "Magic in Women's Hands". The
evening was completely sold out and the guests were thrilled.
I captured some impressions for my Thursday film. You can
watch a few minutes here:
https://youtu.be/kYEoMNA3m7E
As
I write this, I am preparing for a special day that will
already be in the past when you read this. On October 31st,
I was invited again along with 46 other Hamburg museums
to participate in an open house day. Under the title "See
for Free", all 47 museums open their exhibitions. Last
year, I counted around 500 visitors, some of whom waited
up to 2 hours. This time, I have organized the day more
professionally by asking two magician friends to help me.
The
museum can welcome about 30 people at a time, and they have
about 20 minutes to view the exhibition. My helpers ensure
the visitors are organized. For the guests, I have created
a "Museum Rally": they must answer 5 questions
and create a solution word from the answers. Everyone receives
a magic trick at the end. The trick consists of a simple
version of the "multi-pip card", with only the
printed dots, without the additional movable dots.
Until
next and final week. I am sad.

10. Tales From The Fantastic Magic Center - #107
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kent Cummins (US)
"It's
just a stick!"
For
the past six weeks, I have been waxing poetic about magic
wands.
But
what is a magic wand, really? It's just a stick. It's how
we decorate it. what we do with it, and how we use it that
turns the stick into a magic wand.
When
I demonstrate wands from my collection, I often show a tree
branch, painted black with white tips. "What's this?"
I ask the kids.
"It's
just a stick!" they typically reply
almost in
unison.
"It's
not just a stick." I insist. "It's a real magic
wand." They might argue, but I then tell them where
I got it. I was at a magic convention of the Society of
American Magicians, and one of the magic dealers had a display
of unusual magic wands for sale
including this one.
So,
I bought it from a magic dealer at a magic convention. It
must be a real magic wand!
While
working at Dave Goodsell's West Coast Wizards Magic Camp
one summer, I was taking a morning hike with my friend Roy
Porfido. We saw an amazing-looking stick on the ground,
and picked it up. We felt that it had magic in it
perhaps
because Jeff McBride was also there that week!
During
a Broken Wand Ceremony, the person officiating takes a magic
wand, discusses its history, and then dramatically breaks
it. "Without the magician to wield it, the wand has
no power. It's just a stick."
If
you are ever in the Austin, Texas area, you are invited
to come visit the Fantastic Magic Center in nearby Georgetown
and see my extensive collection of sticks
many of them
black with white tips.
The
Fantastic Magic Center is dedicated to preserving and sharing
the art of magic. But I can't do it without your help. My

11. Biddle Goes To Dunbury! - John Carey #250
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
Charlie
Miller's classic 'Dunbury Delusion' is a real crowd pleaser.
There are many methods in print worthy of your attention.
My contribution here is a small packet approach using the
time honored Biddle move. It's quite lean and mean and doesn't
go on forever.
From
a shuffled deck in use casually spread off eight cards from
the top without calling attention to the number and hand
them to a spectator for mixing. Table the balance of the
deck face-down.
Take back the packet and spread it for a free selection.
Secure a left pinky break above the bottom two cards of
the packet as you square up.
The
right hand comes over the packet from above and casually
lifts away all the cards above the break. Extend the left
hand and have the selection placed on top of its cards.
Bring the hands together and drop the right hands cards
on top and square up.
Now
for a casual mix which retains the selection third from
bottom. Spread off the top three cards and drop them to
the table. Push off the next two and drop them on top. Leaving
the remaining cards squared, drop them on top of the tabled
cards and pick the packet up. Now simply repeat the above
procedure which will shuttle the selection back to third
from the bottom of the packet.
State
that in order to find their selection you will use a process
of elimination that never fails! Turn the packet face-up
and hold it from above in right hand Biddle or overhand
grip. The left hand approaches the packet and the thumb
peels off the face card into the left hand. Repeat this
action peeling off the next card on top. Bring the hands
together again and once again peel off a card on top. This
will be the selection.
Secure
a left pinky break beneath it and secretly steal it back
under the right hand's cards, Biddle style, as you peel
off another card from the right hand's packet. Finally peel
off one more card from the face of the right-hand packet
and place the left hand's cards face-down on top of the
deck. Mention that you are certain that none of those cards
are their selection and they are to keep a poker face. Do
not call attention to the number of cards you peel off as
you execute the above sequence.
Turn
the remaining four cards face-down and deal them one by
one into a packet onto the table, sending the selection
to the bottom. Hand the packet to your helper. "In
order to find your card from those you hold we will now
use a mystical elimination ritual an old Gypsy fortune teller
showed me." After saying this direct your spectator
to do a simple down / under deal until they hold just one
card. Ask them to pin the index finger of their other hand
on top.
Turn
over the three cards on the table and ask if they see their
card? They will say no of course. Then ask them to call
out the name of their card. Act slightly confused and shocked
as you look down at the deck and then back at them. Then
with a twinkle in your eye ask them to turn over
the card they are holding to reveal their selection and
conclude the mystery.

volume 7. Numbers 11 and 12 are combined.
I
did this for the fiftieth anniversary of the Ballarat Close
Up Convention last year. I have a few copies over and if
you could let your readers know that if they were a subscriber
back in the 70's if they send their address to me, I will
mail them the last issue free of charge, but they would
have to be one of the original subscribers.
The
cover is by Tom Gagnon and contains some great unpublished
close-up effects.
My
address is barrygovan43@gmail.com

The
Conjuring Arts Research Center is proud to be the future
home of the Magic New Zealand archive! We are a non-profit
organization dedicated to the preservation and interpretation
of magic and its allied arts. Established in 2003 in New
York City, our collection focuses on rare books and materials,
including magicians' letters and documents. Our digital
database, Ask Alexander, allows us to share millions of
pages of magic books and materials with patrons all around
the world. We are also a publisher of magic books, including
our very own journal of magic history, the Gibecière.
Our collection is now housed in Nashua, New Hampshire, and
we maintain an office in New York City.
You
can send your questions and messages to librarian@conjuringarts.org.
