4. Applications Now Open For The Melbourne Magic Festival 2025
-------------------------------------
Message by Tim Ellis (Australia)

Applications are now open for those wishing to produce a show at the 2025 Melbourne Magic Festival.

Our dates, as always, coincide with the winter school holidays July 7 to 19, 2025.

The first week, July 7-12, will centre around our Festival Hub at Arrow on Swanston and our 5 unique theatres in that space, while the second week, July 13-19, will feature shows at Satellite Venues like The Butterfly Club, The MC Showroom, Storyville and more.

This is so that magicians heading to the FISM World Championships in Italy, will be able to do both: A week of shows at the Melbourne Magic Festival from July 7 to 12, then a quick flight to Turin and then enjoy the World Championships from July 14 to 19 2025.

To apply to present a show at The Melbourne Magic Festival, go to https://melbournemagicfestival.com/producer-guide/

5. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article 168
-------------------------------------
Message by Paul Stone (US)

I seem to have been travelling a lot recently and spending an inordinate amount of time in airports. This week I experienced both the good and bad sides of international travel.

I disembarked a cruise in Reykjavik and had to endure absolute carnage at the airport there. Poor signage, with hundreds of people wandering around not knowing where to go and with very little, if any, support from airport personnel.

Then, after a couple of days in London, I arrived at Heathrow Airport, anticipating the worst. It is normally a long check-in followed by a hostile interrogation at security. As it turned out it was the fastest and easiest check-in ever. It took just 18 minutes from the time I arrived at the Terminal until I'd checked my bag, and gone through security, and was enjoying a cup of coffee.

Of course, it had to get worse … and it did. Due to a technical issue my Virgin Atlantic flight back to L.A. was delayed, first by two hours, then by another two hours and then finally cancelled altogether! So, another night spent at the Hilton Hotel at Heathrow - actually quite nice - and hopefully (I'm writing this in the airport!) all will be running properly today!

Next week I'll be in Myrtle Beach for the 'Magic on the Beach' Convention where I'm looking forward to catching up again with my friend Charles Bach.

Have you ever noticed that after you've performed your latest miracle, how spectators exaggerate what you actually did? I recently performed the Chop Cup for a few friends. My version is really short and fast, I don't hang about or spend minutes building to the final loads!

One particular friend talked about the trick for the next several days, telling everyone he knew and each time, it became an even more incredible trick. 'The ball vanished and was here one minute and gone the next. Then out of nowhere he lifted the cup and there was a tomato, which visibly changed into a lemon!'

Just brilliant! Who needs promotional videos!!

7. Magic Museum Bellachini - Episode 87
---------------------------------------------
Message by Wittus Witt (Germany)

Currently, the Bellachini Museum is still showcasing an exhibition on the theme of magic in the hands of women. However, I am already working on the next exhibition, which will focus on the cups and balls trick. It will be a comprehensive presentation with numerous exhibits including books (of course), posters, old graphics, prints, figures, and many examples of different cups.
Among other things, I will display a book from 1514 that depicts a cups and balls performer. I believe it is the oldest example of the depiction of this trick in a book. Another unique exhibit is a small mantel clock that shows the performer with his three cups.

As with the women's exhibition, a large companion volume will also be published for this exhibition. It contains about 200 pages and is large format with over 200 illustrations, some of which have never been published before.

I am particularly pleased to have secured several guest authors who have contributed wonderful articles. First, the two active professional magicians, Helge Thun and Stefan Alexander
Rautenberg, who have been featuring the trick in their shows for many years and have developed very beautiful, unique routines.

They talk about the fascination with the cups and balls trick. Dr. Steffen Taut, a professional scientist, has also been engaged with the cups and balls trick for years and has researched the history of this 2000-year-old trick like few others. Bill Palmer provides insights into his vast collection of different cup forms, and finally, I was able to reproduce some pages from the extensive Bob Read book "The Oldest Trick in a Book."

All in all, it's a grand book. You can get a preview of the book here:

8. Tales From the Fantastic Magic Center - #99

Message by Kent Cummins (US)

"The Enchanted Garden"

Blackstone was the first magician I ever saw, and in 1952 he opened his show with "The Enchanted Garden." I don't remember specific details (I was only nine years old), but I do remember that he covered the stage with feather flowers. It was amazing! He even covered one of his beautiful assistants with a large cone and changed her into a gigantic Feather Flower Bush.

A few years ago, my teen-age granddaughter ("The Amazing Adele") and I created a "Barbie Magic Show," and at one point, in a tribute to Blackstone, we changed Barbie into a beautiful bouquet of feather flowers, using an Abbott's Botania.

But my favorite part of the Enchanted Garden was done in front of the curtain, when Blackstone held a beautiful bouquet of feather flowers. He plucked each bloom off the bouquet and tossed it to the stage floor, where it remained upright. (Each bloom apparently had a dart as a stem.) Then he made the bouquet slowly bloom again. It was awesome!

Today, I open my magic shows with my own "Enchanted Garden," a tribute to that world-famous magician whom I first saw 72 years ago at the Majestic Theatre in San Antonio, Texas. I change my cane into a feather flower bouquet, turn a Match to Flower into a bouquet, and then perform my own version of the Blooming Bouquet. I proudly display the bouquet, but the blooms start falling off until there is just a bunch of green feather stems.

But I blow on the bouquet as the flowers slowly and magically bloom.

I then quickly disclose two large Botanias and take my bow.

Ta Da!

9. Cards Of The Clan - John Carey #243
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)

Cards of the Clan is a very direct, seemingly impossible fiveway matching routine I simply love performing. If you can bottom deal, you will use this. Remove the Ace through Five of Clubs and the Ace through Five of Hearts from the deck and openly arrange them in numerical order, Aces on top and Fives on the face. Table each packet face-up in a spread condition, as you point out each group is in numerical order.

Offer your participant the free choice of either Clubs or Hearts. Let's say that they want Clubs. Have them pick up that packet and turn it facedown. You pick up the Hearts and do the same. Say to them you will play something called do-as-I-do. Ask them to copy you and reverse deal the cards into a face-down packet. As they are doing this you bottom deal four times and toss the last card on top. There's lots of cover here and bottom dealing from a small packet isn't that difficult.

Next ask your helper to pick up their packet and reverse deal again, taking their cards back to where they started. Then have them turn the top card of that packet face-up, showing the Ace of Clubs. "So now we are in a situation where my cards are out of order compared to yours. But, You see, cards are very clannish and like to hang out together. Watch!"

Your left hand takes their face-up card as your right hand takes the top face-down card off it's packet simultaneously. Bring both hands forward a few inches and drop the left hand's face-up card as your right hand turns its card face-up beside it to reveal a match of Aces. Repeat exactly the above with the remaining four face-up and face-down pairs to conclude a most startling matching or numerical follow the leader effect.

10. Triadic - Just Released
-------------------------------------------
Message by Chris Wardle, UK

TRIADIC - Just released - A brand new book test by award-winning creators Chris Wardle and James Ward.

* TRIADIC - A three-phase routine with three separate reveals!

* NO fishing, NO memory work, NO peeks, NO cribs, NO procedures, NO guessing letters, NO codes, NO misses - a direct hit each time and completely out of your hands!

* Very easy to perform, Chris Wardle and James Ward have done all of the hard work for you, by creating a craftily-written and devious book test which you can perform almost immediately. It is completely self-contained, as the instructions are 'hidden in plain sight' in the final two chapters of the book!

Using an innocent-looking poetry book, but you can divine a significant word from the start of the poem, then go on to describe the features, theme and tone of the chosen poem and finally you reveal a significant word on the final line! Multiple principles at play make this so easy to perform.

"I'm a force book junkie - I love them, I've owned many of the best and now I have another corker to add to the pile. The great advantages of this one are its size - it fits into a back pocket or a handbag - and its style: it appears simply to be a treasured book of poems. It also, crucially, delivers three clear climaxes every time, so if you handle it right it could establish your reputation as a versatile reader of minds."
British Magic Legend, Geoffrey Durham.

"TRIADIC - Wow, is it ever devious! I can't wait to perform it!"
Michael Breggar, magic creator and columnist in 'The Linking Ring' magazine.

"This is a genius concept, executed brilliantly. This poetry book is now a permanent fixture on my coffee table."
TV and radio presenter and magician, Matt Edmondson.
