3. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article 165
-------------------------------------
Message by Paul Stone (US)
Over
the many years that I've been involved in the world of magic,
I've been fortunate to meet, work with, and often book,
a considerable number of the finest magicians on the planet.
And
even though I've never been a collector as such, in the
process, I've inevitably acquired quite an array of posters,
memorabilia and interesting artefacts relating to several
of these great performers.
Although
they represent some wonderful memories, the time has come
to pass these items on for others to enjoy. There are several
magicians across the globe with extensive memorabilia and
book collections.
These
include Dr Bruce Averbook, a retired surgical oncologist,
who has established The Averbook Magic Art Museum &
Library, an 8000 square foot museum in Cleveland, Ohio,
housing more than 50,000 objects and ephemera, as well as
15,000 rare books and periodicals.
I
have recently donated items to Bruce's Museum, relating
to Fred Kaps, Johnny Hart, Maurice Fogel, Siegfried &
Roy, and Ricky Jay, and I know they have gone to a good
home.
I'm
a great believer in the value of reading magic books but,
unlike many others, I've never had a huge book collection.
The books I bought were, in the main, ones with commercial
material, written by professionals. And, when going through
a box of my books this week, I came across three books,
written by one such pro, Karrell Fox.
I
was lucky enough to know and spend time with Karrell. He
was a brilliant and creative thinker, and a terrific and
versatile performer, and knew the Tradeshow business inside
out.
All
three of his books, 'Clever Like A Fox', 'For My Next Trick'
and 'My Latest Book' are all packed full of commercial material.
Well worth checking out if you can find copies, especially
if you are a performer.
Another
book that I found in the same box was 'McComb's Magic' by
the inimitable Billy McComb. Billy was a one-off, a great
performer and a wonderful raconteur. What a fabulous career
he had, still making people laugh in the twilight of his
career, supporting the legend that was The Amazing Johnathan
in Las Vegas.
A
few of the other books I came across, and which were essential
reading for me, included 'Polished Polish Prestidigitation'
by Johnny Thompson, 'Pretty Sneaky' by Don Alan, and Third
Dimension' by Roy Johnson. And of course, several of Bob
Orben's comedy books. (For anyone not familiar with Robert
'Bob' Orben, he was the master of 'one-liners' and wrote
numerous booklets on gags for magicians. He also became
the director of the White House speechwriting staff in 1976
and served until the end of the Ford administration).
And
then there are the posters! I always framed the posters
from any shows that I produced, including shows at the London
Palladium Theatre, Theatre Royal Drury Lane, and Her Majesty's
Theatre in London's West End, and several from various Casinos
in Las Vegas, several of them signed by the performers.
But
although once again they remind me of some memorable shows,
and incredible performers, now that I am downsizing, I don't
have the wall space for them and don't just want to put
them in a storage unit. Any suggestions?

4. The Excelsior Tour
-------------------------------------
Message by Jay Scott Berry (US)
The
best thing I ever learned is to never stop learning. And
therein lies the secret to perpetual growth and creativity.
Hence the title of my new Tour and Lecture: Excelsior. From
the Latin, meaning "Reaching ever higher, ever upwards"
As
magicians, we stand upon the shoulders of giants. Therefore,
we have the opportunity, and responsibility, to see farther.
Mediocrity is easy. That's why so many settle there. But
to be a great Artist requires vision, dedication and perseverance.
If you aren't willing to put in the work, excellence will
always be elusive. The very term, "Easy Magic"
is an oxymoron. Nothing worth achieving is ever easy.
With
all that said, I'm pleased to announce that, after premiering
at The Magic Castle, I'll head east for the 4F and MAWNY
Conventions. I'll then fly to Bonnie Scotland for the SAMS
Convention on May 3rd & 4th. From there, I'll barnstorm
my way down to London, with stops at The Leeds Magic Circle
and the Bath Circle of Magicians, then on to France for
the Euro tour in June.
So,
the first 3 months of the Tour will include over 60 shows,
Close-up to Stage, and 40 lectures - All presenting original
Magic to original Music. Mind you, nobody said it would
be easy. But adventure and easy don't come in the same package.
A
big thank you to the Clubs, Venues and Convention who have
joined the Tour. I look forward to seeing you all next year.
Cheers!

7. Magic Museum Bellachini - Episode 83
---------------------------------------------
Message by Wittus Witt (Germany)
Visitors
to my Bellachini Museum ask me almost every time where all
the pieces on display come from. I think every collector
has heard this question: Where did you get that piece? Where
do you find this and that?
Funnily
enough, no one in "other" museums asks where all
the pieces on display come from.
To be honest: if you hear these questions almost every day,
they get on your nerves at some point. There are other questions
too: How did you get into magic in the first place? How
long have you been doing magic, etc.?
For this reason, right from the start I had a small information
brochure printed for free distribution, on which the "10
most frequently asked questions" are answered. Visitors
are even happy to receive such a piece of paper.
But
now I really want to tell you where I got the latest pieces
for my museum and what they are.
I have to start a year back. In April last year, I was a
solo guest on a radio programme in which I was able to talk
about my profession and the museum for over an hour and
was also interviewed. This programme was on a well-known
German radio station that is particularly known for cultural
topics: Deutschlandfunk. You can also listen to it on the
internet.
As
I said, that was over a year ago. A few weeks ago, I received
a friendly e-mail from a gentleman in Berlin. He said he
was the grandson of a well-known magician and would like
to give away his things. He had heard the programme and
asked if I would be interested. Of course I was. It was
the estate of a magician who was very well known in magic
circles, Walter Bangemann. He lived from 1907 to 1973, was
a member of the board of the Magic Circle of Germany and
was really well known in his day. He was a tour guide by
profession and ran a travel agency.
His
passion was micro-magic, close-up magic. He always brought
back original souvenirs from his travels and used them for
magic tricks. All his tricks with meticulous explanations
are beautifully stored in two large and two small suitcases.
The cases are certainly from the jewellery sector, as the
drawers are lined with velvet and very sturdy. The outsides
are covered with leather. So everything is very solid and
of high quality.
I
immediately thought of Dr Stanley Jaks, who is also known
for his micro-magic. I believe that Walter Bangemann's magic
utensils are at least as valuable as Jaks' fold-out book
in which he kept his tricks.
If
you want, you can get an insight into Bangemann's magic
tricks here and one day marvel at them in the museum:
https://youtu.be/iA07CGc4kt8
Well, that's how magic pieces sometimes end up in the collection.
I am sure that some of the readers of this newsletter have
had similar experiences.
See you next time

8. Tales From the Fantastic Magic Center - #96
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kent Cummins (US)
Marketing
can be Magical!
I've
been sharing stories about how marketing can help sell almost
anything. I felt that Blackstone, Junior was particularly
good at this, lending his name and ability as a magician
to a multitude of different products. (And apparently his
dad was pretty good at this, also!)
I
started using magic to promote products while I was still
in school. Pepsi Cola hired me to promote their soft drinks
using magic at grocery stores, movie theaters, and festivals.
I did magic with S&H Green Stamps (remember those?).
Department stores advertised my magic shows as a way to
build traffic.
Many
of my best marketing ideas came from watching Mark Wilson
on The Magic Land of Alakazam when I was in college. Some
of the most versatile magic tricks to use in marketing are
the Magic Coloring Book (Flip Book), Magic Card Duck (with
alphabet cards), and Fresh Fish (or any other product) Sold
Here Today.
I
have used money magic to promote many products and services:
6 Bill Repeat, Expanding Bill, Linking Paper Clips. And
I love "Snippo," which is Clippo with a real dollar
bill. And speaking of Clippo, that can also be used for
many amazing marketing applications.
And
of course you can magically produce a product from your
top hat, Grant's Temple Screen, or a Square Circle. If a
product has changed, you can demonstrate that change magically:
Presto Chango!"
I
tend to call this use of magic "Magic with a Message,"
although I first encountered the term with Hoy's book on
gospel magic. Next week, I will share some of my experience
with this kind of magic with a message.
The
Fantastic Magic Center is dedicated to preserving and sharing
the art of magic. But I can't do it without your help. My
Patreon account is the same place as my free weekly podcast:

10. You! - John Carey #240
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
Following
on from the previous effect, I offer you now another interactive
piece that you can perform either in person, via telephone
or the internet. This effect is another 'Spectator As Magician'
piece where this time they magically locate a card you think
of. Sounds strong
right? Let's get to it...
"Peter,
please shuffle the cards. Now, people who study numerology
say that nine is a very magical number. Let's put that to
the test shall we? Deal nine cards face-up one at a time
into a packet and call them out and I will think of a card."
So
your participant carries out your instructions and you remember
the third card dealt. Let's say it's the Five of Diamonds.
Have them pick up the packet and turn it face-down. We will
now utilize a beautiful throw-off by the late Ray Goulet
to enable our helper to mix the cards and yet retain control
of your thought-of card. Ask them to mix the packet by dealing
a few single cards into a packet, then say they can mix
what remains a little in their hands and deal a few more.
Ask them to mix what's left and to drop them on top of the
tabled packet. Our thought of card is third from the bottom
but the illusion of chaos is a beautiful one.
Now
ask your participant to further randomize the cards by dealing
a card to their left and then one to their right. Instruct
them to continue this left/right deal until the packet is
exhausted. Then casually ask them to drop their right hand
packet on top, square up and then pick up the packet. We
are now set for a very strong revelation.
"So,
Peter, you took out some cards from a deck you shuffled.
You then shuffled those cards and I merely thought of one.
A card that nobody in the world, but me knows. You then
shuffled the cards some more and nobody knows where it is
right now. But you will use magic to try to find
my thought of card. In fact, please deal cards one at a
time and call out the letters of magic, one for each card
you deal. The card I'm thinking of is the Five of Diamonds.
Please turn the next card over. Congratulations my friend,
you are a star!" They do and your mystery is concluded
in a pleasing and strong fashion.
