Message by Paul Stone (US)

As I write this week's article, the date is July 17th, and it is with a feeling of enormous sadness, because today truly marked the end of an era. The Mirage Hotel & Casino closed its doors for the final time at 11am this morning.

The Mirage was more than just another hotel, it was the first 'Resort' property on the Strip, and changed the face of Las Vegas forever. With its spectacular Volcano and fabulous atrium, it heralded in a whole new chapter of luxury accommodation and entertainment for Las Vegas.

And of course right there, front and centre, were the 'Masters Of The Impossible,' themselves, Siegfried & Roy, with their iconic and never to be forgotten show with its fabulous illusions and exotic animal Co-Stars. Siegfried & Roy put the Mirage on the map, and ruled the entertainment scene in Las Vegas for fourteen incredible years.

I, for one, am going to miss the Mirage. It has certainly left me with some wonderful memories, not only of Siegfried & Roy, but also the superb Cirque du Soleil Beatles 'Love' Show.

The Mirage will re-open in 2027 as the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino and Guitar Hotel Las Vegas, and will feature a 700 foot guitar shaped hotel tower.

Coincidentally, a couple of days ago, I met up in Las Vegas with an old friend, and Las Vegas 'entertainment royalty', Lynette Chappell, the 'Evil Queen' herself for four decades, in Siegfried & Roy' shows, at the Stardust, Frontier and Mirage Casinos. She has some brilliant stories … what an amazing career she had!

The closing of the Mirage also means the closing of Shin Lim's show, but happily I can report that his 'Limitless' show has been snapped up by the Venetian Hotel & Casino and will open there in their Palazzo Theatre in October.

Colin Cloud, who is billed as a mentalist, but is in my opinion much more than that, and who has supported Shin Lim for the past five years, or some might say, starred, has now deservedly got his own show 'Colin Cloud Mastermind' at Harrah's. I'm sure he'll be successful. Colin is a hugely talented and entertaining performer.

Whilst I was in Las Vegas, I had a chance to call in to see another close friend, Lupe Nielsen. Lupe is without doubt a one-off! She has been through some difficult health challenges, and still is always very upbeat.

We all miss Norm a great deal, he was such a lovely man, and a great performer, and it is to Lupe's credit that she is still very much a part of the Vegas Magic scene. Her woodworking skills are off the chart! When I saw her, she was preparing for the upcoming 'Magic Live' convention at the Orleans Hotel & Casino.

5. 86th Annual Abbott's Magic Get-Together
---------------------------------------------

The Abbott's Magic Company, the Colon Lions Club and the Colon Chamber of Commerce are proud to celebrate the 86th Annual Abbott's Magic Get-Together. The dates are July 31, August 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 2024. Once again, magicians from all over the world will migrate to Colon, Michigan, the Magic Capital of the World, to be a part of this family-oriented event. Tents and campers will magically pop up everywhere to swell this tiny little village until it appears there is no room for even one more person. Everyone scampers to be a part of this fun convention which was named the #1 Unique Michigan Convention in the Detroit Free Press.

Magicians will be performing in the streets, restaurants and bars. The annual craft fair will take place on Friday and Saturday. Visit the Colon Historical Museum for a special Magic adventure or take a cemetery tour where many famous and not so famous magicians have chosen to perform their final act and become a permanent part of the magical history of Colon. You also don't want to miss the 3 free magic shows daily on the streets of Colon by some of the country's top busking magicians.

Each of the four days ends with a world class magic and variety show held in the air-conditioned Colon High School Auditorium. These are not your average birthday party magicians and each show is different, with comedy, large illusions, variety acts, and much more.

For more information, contact the Abbott's Magic Company, 124 S. St. Joseph St., Colon, MI 49040 or at 269 - 432-3235. Or visit us online at www.abbottmagic.com where you can get more information on the performers and order tickets.

6. Magic Museum Bellachini - Episode 82
---------------------------------------------
Message by Wittus Witt (Germany)

In the mean time I'm back in Hamburg, in my beloved museum. My short holiday on the Isle of Wight/England was magical in the truest sense of the word. In an art gallery in Newport, I discovered a statue of a magician made by the artist Jenny Clayden. Celebrated Island artist Jenny Clayden, presents handcrafted papier mâché figures, made over the last twenty years. These character studies range from life-size to thumb-size, from the hilariously comical to the beautifully poignant. Mimicking the freewheeling effect of Quentin Blake; they are designed to enchant and create intrigue, all with an air of spontaneity. These celebratory and dramatic sculptures express humour and compassion in the numerous situations and individual journeys presented. The statue is a very endearing depiction of a magician to whom all sorts of things happen. There is the rabbit in front of him in a top hat. Magic scarves are hanging out of one of his trouser pockets, a small mouse is climbing out of his pocket on the other side and a dove is sitting on his head. The statue is made entirely of papier-mâché. It is about 60 cm tall and made entirely of papier-mâché, including the scarves, which actually look like silk scarves, but are made of paper.

This statue was originally intended as a donation for the gallery, but after I told the owner who I am and that I have a museum for magic art, she was willing to sell me this unique statue. Now I wait every day for it to arrive intact.

On my YouTube channel you can see a small impression of this figure.

See you Next week.

7. Tales From The Fantastic Magic Center - #94
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kent Cummins (US)

"Ride the Wild Surf!"

It was officially called a "Romantic Drama," but I would call it a "teen exploitation movie." Surf movies were popular in the sixties, and this 1964 film with Fabian and Tab Hunter among other teen heartthrobs of the day seemed to be more of the same.

"Gordie" Ogden, the Gordon Theater co-owner and promotion manager had hired me part time while I was at Louisiana State University to help promote movies at the theater. He told me that we needed some kind of promotion to help this movie attract fans.
I looked at the materials sent by the studio, and suggested: "What if we float a girl in a bikini on a surfboard…but not in the water. In the air! I had used magic to promote other events at the theater, and Gordie approved the idea.

But we were in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and the Mississippi River did not have any surf. There were no surf shops. We eventually found a large, hollow, plywood home-made surfboard. Now all we needed was the girl in a bikini.

But there were no girls in bikinis in 1964! (We would call those "bikinis" just two-piece swimsuits today.)

I put a classified ad in the newspaper offering to hire "a girl in a bikini" for a movie promotion. The only response we got was an outraged comment from Gordie's mother. But Gordie eventually found a girl with a two-piece suit who worked at a health club on the other side of town. She was willing to participate.

Newspaper and radio ads finally went out. We were ready!

Tune in next week for "the rest of the story."

8. The Zanetti Mystery
--------------------------------------------
Message by Trudy Monti / Monteith, AIMC

Trudy Monti has recently published Houdini's last published book, "The Zanetti Mystery" a thrilling romantic murder mystery published by Houdini as a newspaper serial in 1925-1926 that is now available as a paperback or hardcover book.

"The Zanetti Mystery" is a thrilling murder mystery by world-famous magician Harry Houdini in which he delves into the secret world of mediums, spiritualists and séances.

Thirty-five years of study and thirty-five years of experience gathered in every quarter of the world by the master of a unique profession went into the making of "The Zanetti Mystery" by Houdini in 1925.

Houdini put the whole of his vast special knowledge into "The Zanetti Mystery."

Houdini built his story about the monstrous figure of Zanetti - genius, faker, and arch rogue - and showed the methods by which even profound scientists had been hoodwinked by prophets of the occult and materializers of demons and spirits.

Through the whole fabric of the story, there move the amazing characters of the half-world and underworld whom only Houdini could write about, because his special investigations made him know them all and how they worked as links in a chain system which was one of the weirdest forces for fraud and evil in the world. Murder, romance and mystique are all brought to life by the world's handcuff king in a labyrinth that is the world of spiritualism.

And now ninety-eight years later, Houdini's novella originally published as a newspaper serial, is presented to the public as Houdini's final book.

"The Zanetti Mystery" is available at Amazon.com or autographed by Trudy Monti at TTMstlBOOKS@gmail.com - Paperback $20 or Hardback $30 CONUS

9. Elliot Aces - John Carey #239
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)

Elliot Aces is a very deceptive 'Spectator finds the Aces' that uses the properties of the Dr Elliot Bottom deal, from Dai Vernon's Ultimate Card Secrets. Here we will use it for the secret extraction and add-on of the Aces. Set the Aces in alternating order on the face of the deck and
you're good to go.

Execute an in-the-hands or tabled riffle shuffle retaining your Ace slug on the bottom. Hand the deck to your helper and have them carry out the Jay Ose false triple table cut on themselves (A Jim Swain idea, I believe). Take back the deck and hold it in a left-hand straddle grip, the pinky placed at the inner short edge of the deck. "I'm going to ask you to help me make some packets based on your impulse. As I spread through the cards you will say stop three times."

Commence a slow hand-to-hand spread and ask your helper to say stop. When they do, your right hand will take the cards at the point stopped at away from the deck, at the same time the right second finger will extend and secretly drag an Ace from the bottom of the deck away and secretly pull it under the packet. This isn't difficult because the straddle grip makes the strike of the bottom card easy because there isn't any friction.

Repeat the above actions with your spectator twice more, forming two more packets on the table, an Ace secretly having been added to each. Slip shuffle retaining the final Ace on the bottom of the packet you have remaining. Then slip shuffle once more and ask the person to call stop.

When they do, table this packet at the far right of the tabled row of packets. Build the conditions up and then ask your helper to turn each packet faceup to reveal that they have miraculously found the Aces.
