So, we're already half way through the year, and the days are getting shorter! It's Magic Convention season and I have just seen the IBM Convention take place in Tacoma, Washington.

For any young and aspiring magicians attending, it is an especially exciting few days, thanks to Lance Burton, who has once again given up his time to host the Junior magicians. Lance has graciously carried on this tradition, originally started several years ago at the Las Vegas Desert Magic Seminar. How great to see such an outstanding performer 'giving back' to the profession that launched him and helped make his career such a stellar one.

When I first got introduced to magic over 50 years ago, there were a lot fewer conventions, and one of the main reasons for going was to see the Dealers Hall. It was the chance to see the latest creations. Nowadays, of course, the world has changed, and with it, the way people buy their magic. Thanks to the internet, magicians now predominantly buy magic online. Personally, I've always enjoyed actually seeing an effect 'demmed' live, and experiencing the buzz of a Dealers Hall. It was always a treat watching characters like Ken Brooke, Al Cohen and more recently of course Mark Mason in action and attracting big crowds to their booths.

'Magic Live' which once again descends on the Orleans Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas next month, always has an impressive array of Dealers, and continues to be a hugely popular convention. I think that the draw of the Entertainment Capital of the World also has something to do with its success. But Stan Allen must be doing something right, as the convention sells out year after year!

Maybe it's because I've been to so many magic conventions over the years that these days I prefer the smaller, more intimate conventions. I'm very much looking forward to attending and lecturing at 'Magic at the Beach' in Myrtle Beach in September. It will be great to see my friend Charles Bach again. Charles is not only the driving force behind this convention, but also produces and stars in an extremely successful show year-round at his 'Wonders Theatre.'

The 'Headliner' at this convention is Dan Sperry, one of the stars of the 'Illusionists' Show. Dan has pretty much remained under the radar, but has been one of the mainstays in that show, appearing in major theatres all over the world.

6. Paul Gordon On The Magic Word Podcast
---------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells MIMC

This week we take a look at the long and successful career of a British close-up card magician, Paul Gordon. Paul has worked his entire career performing and creating card magic for cocktail parties, weddings and corporate events. But besides being an "in demand" performer, he also sings big band classic with a full band accompaniment. In fact, he almost went full time into a singing career. But we as magicians are thankful because of the massive contributions he has made to us in the way of books, DVDs and lectures to help us all become better card magicians.

You can listen to this episode wherever you get your podcasts. But for more information and to view our video chat (that contains a bit more than the pure audio version), please visit https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/840-paul-gordon

And while you are listening to this week's episode, please take a moment to give us a five-star rating on whatever platform you use to listen to this podcast and leave us a nice review. That will help our podcast grow and is a small favor that will mean so much to the podcast. Thank you in advance for your help with this.

7. Magic Museum Bellachini - Episode 81
---------------------------------------------
Message by Wittus Witt (Germany)

The Bellachini Museum is currently closed for a few days. I'm going on a short holiday. After two years, I've taken a week off. But of course I can't do without magic.

I'm spending my time on the beautiful English Isle of Wight. My relatives lived here in Ventnor until the 1990s and I've visited them every year since 1964. Back then there was still a magic shop in - I think - Shanklin: The Magic Shop. Shanklin is nearby Ventnor.

But the biggest disappointment I had to experience after many years was when I learnt that the magic historian and collector Jimmy Findlay lived on the island until his death (1904-1973). It's tragic because my cousin told me at the time that there was a bookshop with lots of old books in Shanklin. If only she had put the word "magic" in front of it! So I missed the opportunity to meet Mr Findlay for all those years.

What I did discover at the time were three little magic machines in an amusement park. You had to insert a coin and then "magic" was performed under the glass cover. I believe these machines are still in England with a collector. Perhaps Paul Stone can tell us more about them.

And finally, a magical episode connected with the Isle of Wight.

In Peter Lamont's 2004 publication "The Rise of the Indian Rope Trick: The Biography of a Legend" you can read the following:
---------------------------
"After all, the first to don make-up and turban to perform magic was the man who created David Copperfield. Charles Dickens was, in fact, an enthusiastic amateur conjuror. As such, he took a keen interest in Indian juggling, and a somewhat cynical interest in the feats of spiritualist mediums, the journals he edited regularly taking a swipe at these 'spirit jugglers'. Dickens's writings were, of course, well known to his contemporaries, but very few people knew of his performance as 'The Unparalleled Necromancer Rhia Rhama Rhoos'. This was in part because it had taken place on the Isle of Wight. In 1849, in a charity performance for the children in the town of Bonchurch, Dickens had blacked up his face and hands, dressed himself in exotic robes, and presented himself with an Indian name, though his tricks bore very little resemblance to Indian feats. In fact, with the exception of his name and costume, there was nothing particularly Indian about the performance, an idea that would be faithfully copied by the Fakir of Ava a few years later."
_______________
And yet another famous magician who lived on the island for a time was the incredible Mark Raffles, Britain's fine pickpocket (1922-2022).

Apart from that, many magicians have performed here time and again and there have also been magic events here. A book could (should) be written about magic on the Isle of Wight. Who would like to?

So much for this magical island.

"More Marketing Magic"

I have previously told you about my passion for marketing. It's why I have been writing the "Marketing Magic" column for The Linking Ring for the past nine years.

While in college, I went to the LSU Student Union and printed posters, comedy signs, and other marketing materials for my magic shows and other projects. I won a free set of pipes for creating a "Pipe Dreams" ad for Kaywoodie Pipes. I used Wooden Nickels from the Elbee Company, home of the Fun 'N Magic Shop, for virtually all my projects.

One of my part-time jobs while at LSU was creating marketing programs for the Gordon Theatre. I organized a parade in downtown Baton Rouge to promote Bye Bye Birdie, a waterskiing Show for the latest Tarzan movie, and of course spooky stuff for any horror movies. I bought a U.F. Grant French Guillotine to promote Two on a Guillotine with Caesar Romero, Connie Stevens and Dean Jones.

The Gordon Theater didn't actually show this movie from Warner Brothers, but the manager wrote letters to the managers of the theaters who did show the movie, and I was able to tour Louisiana with my magic stage show.

I also created the Gordon Theater Fun Show, a Saturday morning kids event with a stage show by "The Fantastic Kent Cummins" and a movie appropriate for kids. We got Pepsi Cola to sponsor it, and I established the Gordon Theatre Magic Club. In addition to newspaper and radio ads, I created some wonderful, magical lobby displays.

But perhaps my favorite was for Ride the Wild Surf. I will tell you all about it next week!
The Fantastic Magic Center is dedicated to preserving and sharing the art of magic. But I can't do it without your help. My Patreon account is the same place as my free weekly podcast:

11. The Bernard Control - John Carey #238
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)

Here's a wee control I call the Bernard control, which utilizes the mechanics of the late Bobby Bernard's false-cut for a top control. Hold the deck in left-hand dealing grip and ask a spectator to cut off about half the deck and table it. Push off the top card of the packet left in your hand about two inches and raise the left hand to show your helper their selection. Lower the left hand and pull the selection square.

Take the packet from above in Biddle grip and swing cut half the packet into left hand dealing grip. Immediately turn the left hand slightly so that the back faces your right hand and bring the right hand over to the left hand and tap the left long edge of the right-hand section against the back of the left-hand packet twice. Then drop the right-hand cards on top of the tabled cards and finally take the cards in your left hand from above in the right hand and drop them on top of everything and square up. The selection now resides on top.

Notes: You can apply this half deck ploy to many false cuts, like the Thompson cut etc. to effect a nice casual top control. Sometimes when I place the last packet on top I immediately in one seamless action ribbon spread the deck, which seems to add another visual layer.
