The
performance of coin magic is generally not an emotionally
moving experience but, when Luis Olmedo appeared at FISM
2022 in Quebec, you could sense a feeling move through the
large room. His quiet manner, the music, and of course the
leaves
specifically autumn leaves.
He is a magician of uncommon discipline and ability, no
matter the props, but in this case his act consisted of
a Coin Assembly done on a diagonal instead of a square.
The leaves changed to cards, magic gently ensued as the
coins mysteriously relocated as if pushed by a ghostly hand,
and the cards returned to leaves, then carried away by the
wind.
Considering
the enormous stage and room in which this was performed,
Luis managed to create a remarkable feeling of intimacy.
He deservedly tied for first place in Close-Up Magic. When
not performing magic he's an athlete - no awkward school
day stories for this kid. And - good for him - his act did
not depend on anything that can't be done in close-up circumstances
for real spectators sitting at the table with him. His story
is told in part narrative, part interview, by Roberto Mansilla.
And
we have our usual sterling line-up of columnists this month,
including John Bannon, who, in "Dealing With It"
explains "HofScotch," which most cleverly fixes
"The Hofzinser Ace Problem." Krystyn Lambert muses
on pursuing your passion in "Stage as Studio."
Jim Steinmeyer has created the ultimate routine based around
the game of Clue in "Conjuring." Jamy Ian Swiss
presents another remarkable routine in "Magicana,"
and this month it's Adam Elbaum's "Visible Deck."
In "WWPD" Jonathan Friedman exhibits strange behavior
with those leftover center bits - the detritus from a Linking
Card routine.
David
Regal renews his license to perform magic in this month's
"Material Concessions." Jon Racherbaumer reclines
while reading a mind in "Exhumations." If its
in the news it's in "The Eye," courtesy of Vanessa
Armstrong, and if it's happening at The Magic Castle you
can read all about it through the eyes of Shawn McMaster
in "Knights at The Magic Castle." Tom Frame, Mike
Dobrowolski, and Bill Wells review books, tricks, and videos
in "Light from the Lamp" to complete the issue
and propel you properly into your summer reading.

3. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article 161
-------------------------------------
Message by Paul Stone (US)
Every
week, Wednesday seems to come round very fast, and with
it the next copy date for Magic New Zealand! This my 161st
consecutive article, and whilst most weeks there is some
magic news or a particular related topic that comes to mind,
very occasionally that isn't the case, and I'm left scratching
my head about what to write.
When
my good friend Mike Close, magician, emcee, pianist, music
director and all round nice guy was the editor of MUM, the
Society of American Magicians magazine, I wrote a monthly
article for two years, featuring many of the world's greatest
magicians that I'd been fortunate to work with. The articles
always looked great because there were lots of colour photos,
and every issue was expertly laid out by Mike's lovely and
incredibly talented wife Lisa. Unfortunately, Mike and Lisa,
and their daughter Ava, moved out of Las Vegas to Canada
several years ago, and I miss them!
I
also write a bi-monthly article for the Manchester Magicians
Club, and so this got me to thinking about all the thousands
of words I've written over the years. Maybe one day, I should
publish all the articles together in a book!
I
don't normally pay too much attention to comments on Facebook,
but I was pleasantly surprised by comments by Mike Stuart
Baugh this week. The post was singing the praises of the
outstanding juggler and comedian, Wally Eastwood, host of
'V' The Ultimate Variety Show at the Planet Hollywood Hotel
& Casino in Las Vegas.
I'd
produced a show a few years ago at the gorgeous Grand Theatre
in Blackpool, designed by renowned theatre architect, Frank
Matcham, to mark the launch of 'Showzam', a circus and variety
entertainment festival.
To
quote Mike "What a show that was, I saw some of the
best Variety artists I'd ever seen. That show changed my
life." It's rewarding to know that the show had such
an impact on Mike.
It
was quite a line-up, and apart from Wally, featured six
of the world's best Variety acts, including Charlie Frye
& Co, and the hilarious Jeff Hobson. The combination
of so many superb performers, a breathtaking theatre, and
even a 'live' orchestra, guaranteed a winning formula.
Any
British readers of Magic NZ, will know the name of comedian
/ impressionist Les Dennis. I first met Les over 50 years
ago, and we became good friends. We were both living in
Liverpool, and Les burst onto the entertainment scene on
a TV Talent show called 'New Faces'. I went with Les to
the TV studios. That was his first big break. Les has had
a long and varied career, and is now fulfilling a lifelong
ambition, to play Malvolio, in Shakespeare's Twelfth Night.
It
is a great part, and one that I was lucky enough to see
that wonderful actor Donald Sinden play at the Royal Shakespeare
Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon many years ago, and also
the one and only Sir Kenneth Dodd / Ken Dodd, star in the
role at Liverpool's Playhouse Theatre.
Their
diction and delivery of lines, and their facial expressions
brought the house down.
Simply unforgettable! Watching and studying the top actors,
would be a very valuable lesson for any aspiring magicians.
The tricks are just the start!
So,
I did think of something to write this week after all!

4. Giovanni Livera On The Magic Word Podcast

Message by Scott Wells MIMC
During
a recent visit to the Magic Castle, we visited with Giovanni
Livera. Gio was the 1991 winner of the I.B.M. Gold Cup and
later transitioned into a successful speaking career where
he is much in demand across the country. Among his many
accomplishments and books, he and Tim Glancy were responsible
for creating the t-shirt cannon that is used in ball parks
and stadiums around the world. This larger-than-life character
has so many stories and tips to give that you cannot overlook
this week's episode.
You
can listen wherever you get your podcasts. But for more
information, videos, photos, and more, please visit: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/839-giovanni-livera
And if you can take a few moments of your time, it would
be greatly appreciated if you could give us a five star
review with some nice comments on iTunes or whatever platform
you use to listen to podcasts. Thank you!

5. Magic Museum Bellachini - Episode 80
---------------------------------------------
Message by Wittus Witt (Germany)
This
is the 80th episode ... a small anniversary.
Other
exhibits in the Bellachini Museum are records featuring
magic. This can be either a cover design showing a magic
motif or a long-playing disc with recordings of magic performances
or explanations of magic tricks. The best-known sleeves
with magic motifs are certainly those from the Magic Circle
London, Doug Henning's Magic Show and Harry Blackstone Sr.
I don't want to list any more now, because I would like
to draw attention to a very special long-playing record,
which is marvelled at extensively in the museum, especially
by older visitors. Why by older people in particular? Well,
because the "magician" depicted on it is not a
magician, but a world-famous figure skater in the 1960s
and 1970s: Hans-Jürgen Bäumler.
Together
with his partner Marika Kilius, he was twice world champion
in ice skating. He then began a career as a showmaster,
singer and actor. The cover shows him in the typical pose
of a magician: a top hat in one hand and a magic wand in
the other. You really would think he was a magician. As
Mr Bäumler is still with us (he was born in 1942),
I was able to find his e-mail address and asked him if he
really was a magician. After a few days, his friendly reply
came back: "No, I've never performed magic myself,
I've only ever enchanted my audience." The record bears
the title of one of the songs on it: Magic from a Top Hat.
In the song, he sings about a magician who conjures up all
sorts of things out of his hat.
Here
you can see the record and a short clip of his performance
on the ice:

"Marketing
Magic"
Many
of you know that I write the "Marketing Magic"
column for The Linking Ring magazine, the official organ
of the International Brotherhood of Magicians. I recently
sent in my 107th column, which will appear in the August
issue. Each column is approximately 2000 words, plus illustrations.
So, by the end of next year, if I keep going, I will have
written a quarter-of-a-million words about marketing!
I
am passionate about magic. This year is my 75th year as
a magician! But I am also passionate about marketing. I
tell people that I learned marketing in college, which is
technically true I suppose. My 1965 BA Degree from Louisiana
State University was in Communication (Radio and Television
Broadcasting and Journalism), and I got my MBA Degree with
a concentration in Marketing from the University of Texas
in 1972.
But
that's not the real story. Going through some of my mom's
old scrapbooks, I came across marketing materials that I
had created for my backyard circus while I was in the fourth
grade. I used the posters in the A.C. Gilbert Mysto Magic
sets to promote neighborhood magic shows. While at Baton
Rouge Junior High School, I took printing in Industrial
Arts. I printed business cards, flyers, posters, bumper
stickers and novelty marketing pieces for my magic shows.
My
first summer job, at the age of 14, was at the Fun 'N Magic
Shop in San Antonio, Texas in 1957. Louis Berkie, the proprietor,
taught me how to make rubber stamps, how to use the Headline
Newspaper press, and how to design and print wooden nickels.
I
have always loved marketing!
More
Marketing Magic next week.

Fantastic Magic Center is dedicated to preserving and sharing
the art of magic. But I can't do it without your help. My

to be screened at TAOM-SAM Combined Convention
You
already know that the best magicians in the world are coming
to Magic Texas August 29-September 2nd in Dallas, Texas.
Now we are thrilled to announce the addition of a special
event to this lineup: Lost in the Shuffle Documentary Screening
featuring world champion magician Shawn Farquhar. Shawn
will be joined by the documentary's producer, Jon Ornoy.
This unique event promises mystery, intrigue, and unparalleled
entertainment as audiences delve into the world of magic,
illusion and magic's most popular prop, a deck of cards.
Lost
in the Shuffle delves into a medieval murder cold case amidst
the realm of playing cards, where Jacks, Queens, and Kings
take on a life of their own. Renowned magician Shawn Farquhar,
a two-time world champion and esteemed illusionist, guides
viewers through a captivating exploration of the art of
sleight-of-hand, drawing inspiration from the world's best
magicians.
From
its origins as a pastime in 9th century China to its enduring
presence in modern magic, playing cards have captivated
hearts and minds for centuries. Lost in the Shuffle offers
a loving tribute to the mystique of playing cards and the
secrets hidden within their intricate designs.
Central
to the film is Shawn Farquhar's deep dive into the story
of King Charles VIII, whose tragic fate is believed by some
to be hidden within the symbolism of playing cards. Shawn's
meticulous research unveils a tale of political intrigue,
betrayal, and coded messages that have endured through the
ages.
Throughout
the movie, audiences will witness Shawn Farquhar's creative
process as he develops a groundbreaking new routine inspired
by King Charles VIII's narrative. Collaborating with top
magicians Juan Tamariz, Michael Vincent, Richard Turner,
and Alexandra Duvivier, Shawn unveils the secrets behind
the magician's craft, showcasing the ingenuity, psychological
tricks, and sheer artistry that make magic an unforgettable
experience.

10. Quadruple Prediction - John Carey #237
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
Quadruple
Prediction is a multiple prediction effect that's a real
fooler. You will require a deck of cards, four blank business
cards and a pen. Ahead of time take out the Aces from the
deck. Ribbon spread the rest of the deck face-up on the
table. Place the Ace of Clubs third or fourth
from the face. Then place the Ace of Hearts a few cards
after that. Next take the Ace of Spades and place that into
the spread, two or three cards after the Ace of Hearts.
Finally place the Ace of Diamonds into the spread two or
three cards after the Ace of Hearts. Now it's showtime.
Bring
out the deck, business cards and pen. Turn the deck face-up
and execute a ribbon spread, keeping the bottom 15-20 cards
hidden/bunched up, concealing the Aces. Gather up the deck
and turn it facedown. Overhand shuffle about 30 cards and
then throw the remaining cards on top. This places your
setup in and around the upper third of the deck. Table the
deck in front of you lengthwise.
"I'm
going to attempt to predict the future. Tomorrow it will
rain! No seriously, let me write down a few things. Pick
up a business card and write Ace of Clubs onto it sight
unseen. Table that card writing side down to your left.
Then pick up another business card, act out a moment of
concentration and then write Ace of Hearts onto it and table
it writing side down to the right of the first business
card. Next pick up a third business card and write Ace of
Spades on it and table that next to the second business
card. Finally take the remaining business card and write
Ace of
Diamonds on it and table that at the far right end of the
row of business cards. Status check: Four predictions on
the table in Ace of Clubs, Ace of Hearts, Ace of Spades,
and Ace of Diamonds order from left to right.
Now
we will utilize an absolutely beautiful concept of Charles
Jordan, which will enable our participant to riffle shuffle
the deck twice and yet keep our Aces totally under our control.
Cut off just over half the tabled deck to the right and
ask your helper to riffle shuffle them and square
up. "I want this to be the fairest thing you've ever
seen, so shuffle them again!" As before cut off just
over half the deck to the right and have them riffle shuffle
once again and square up. Everything appears incredibly
fair and yet, believe it or not, the Aces are still under
your control!
"Every
deck of 52 cards consists of 13 values that are repeated
four times. Jacks are good, Queens are great and Kings are
even better. But you just can't beat the...?" They
should reply Aces. If not tell them. "You shuffled
that deck not once, but twice." Ask your helper to
pick up the deck and turn it face-up and then start spreading
through the deck with the faces towards themselves and remove
the first Ace they come to. It will be the Ace of Clubs,
thanks to the genius of Charles Jordan. Have them table
it in front of your first prediction on the far left of
the row of four business cards.
Have
them carry out the same actions and remove the next Ace
they arrive at. It will be the Ace of Hearts. Direct them
to place it face-down in front of your second prediction.
Once more have them remove the next Ace in the deck, the
Ace of Spades and table that in front of your third prediction
face-down. Finally they are asked to remove the final Ace-
Ace of Diamonds and table that face-down in front of your
final prediction. Build up how fair everything has been,
their shuffles etc and then ask them to turn each of the
Aces face-up. Then reveal one at a time that you indeed
did predict the future showing a perfect quadruple prediction!
Notes:
One can substitute a Rosetta shuffle if you are working
for someone who cannot riffle shuffle.
