5. Julie Eng On The Magic Word Podcast
-------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells MIMC

I think my travel schedule will slow down for a short while as I catch up with the reality of what has happened recently in my life. Of particular note I want to thank the Academy of Magical Arts (the Magic Castle) for the Special Fellowship Award in recognition of The Magic Word Podcast making a difference in the world of magic over the past 12 years as we have archived over 800 episodes with some of the greats, soon to be greats, used to be greats and, well…others. I certainly want to thank you, the listener, for tuning in each week to hear these episodes. And thanks, too, to those who have sat or stood behind my microphone and lent their voices to history. Thank you everyone for making me the "Podfather" of Magic.

Just to catch up (in case you are a little behind on recent episodes), here are the links to the Magic Collectors Expo daily reports from Long Beach, California:
https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/832-collector-expo-2024-days-one-and-two

https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/833-collector-expo-2024-day-three

We then sit down for a chat with multiple award winner, Eric DeCamps. He is a classy gentleman and a true magician without compare. Inspired by the late, great Rene Lavand, Eric has honed his one-man show to fine diamond and should be seen whenever you get a chance. You can read the blog, see some photos, watch some videos, and hear our chat here: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/834-eric-decamps

Next we take a history lesson from a mega-collector of Marshall Brodien memorabilia, Mark Jensen. Although he is the defining collector of all things Brodien, he also collects movie memorabilia (especially from "The Great Buck Howard") among so many other things. Mark gives us insight into the life of a true magic collector. You can listen wherever you get your podcasts, but for more information, please visit: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/835-mark-jensen

This week we chat with Julie Eng, editor of Magicol and Executive Director of Magicana in Toronto, Canada. She talks about her life in magic and her father, Tony Eng, being an inspiration for her in both magic and life. You can tune in for that episode online at the website at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/836-julie-eng

Please help our podcast grow by liking, sharing, and subscribing to the Magic Word Podcast. And if you can take a few minutes to give us a five-star rating along with favorable comments, then that, too, helps our podcast grow. Thank you.

Thanks for listening,
Scotty Out!

6. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article 158
-------------------------------------
Message by Paul Stone (US)

In 2007 and 2008, a couple of years before I moved from UK to live in Las Vegas, I was the Executive Producer of the IBM British Ring Conventions. The first one up north in Southport (!), and the second one down south in Eastbourne.

A couple of days ago I came across the promotional flyers for both these conventions, and I'd forgotten just how incredible the line-up of talent had been.

Inevitably, a few of the star performers are sadly no longer with us, but just look at these names.

In 2007, Tomsoni & Co (Johnny & Pam Thompson), Lennart Green, David Williamson, Joanie Spina, Gaetan Bloom, Rocco, Bill Malone, Michael Vincent, Paul Zenon, Murray Hatfield & Teresa, Boris Wild, and Tim Gabrielson. And 'Magic Al' performed his full Off Broadway Children's Show.

In 2008, the line-up was even stronger. Juan Tamariz, Jeff Hobson, Michael Weber, Norm Nielsen, Kalin & Jinger, Raymond Crowe, Michael Finley, Bill Herz, Guy Hollingworth, Michael Close, Geoffrey Durham, Richard McDougall, John Archer, Mark Raffles, Levent, Tony Chapek, Oscar Munoz, Mel Mellors, Gene Anderson, Jason Byrne, Mark Mitton and Denny Haney.

And it didn't stop there, the International Close-Up Show featured Derek Delgaudio, Jason England, Jon Armstrong, Bob Kohler, Nicholas Einhorn, and Glenn Farrington.

And to complete the line-up, the Children's Showtime was compered by that British institution, the one and only Terry Herbert, and featured Mike Bent from across the pond.

I'm aware that budgets have changed, and there are now more conventions than ever, but I've always maintained that the better the talent you bring in, the more people will register, and the proof was in the pudding, at the Eastbourne Convention in 2008, there were around 1150 attendees.

The Blackpool Magic Convention and 'Magic Live' prove this point too, even though they have in their favour location and also a very successful and established format.

Personally, I'm a fan of smaller conventions, with the caveat being that they are professionally produced, and that they once again showcase top talent. An excellent example of this is Bill Smith's Collectors Conference, which although aimed at a niche market, never fails to deliver fascinating lectures, and high-quality shows. And that is why it is sold out every year.

For obvious reasons, it is a real challenge to make smaller conventions financially viable, but like many things in life, you get what you pay for. I'm a firm believer that people are quite prepared to pay a bit more for a quality product.

And although videos, downloads, and zoom calls are the order of the day, in my book, they'll never beat the experience of actually 'being there'.

I want to finish this week's article by giving a shout out to a very good friend of mine, originally from Blackpool, and someone who I first met when he was the young presenter of a kids TV Magic Show on British television. His name, Glenn Kinsey, I had lost contact with him and had not seen him for nearly 40 years, but through a mutual friend, I met him again in Los Angeles last year. Now he is a very successful entrepreneur, training celebrities and corporate CEOs on both sides of the Atlantic, on how to present on TV and in the corporate world. I saw Glenn in action at his state-of-the-art studio in London a few weeks ago, and it was extremely impressive.

Glenn has recently had some health issues, but thankfully is now on the mend, and it was great to see him, together with his mum and dad who were visiting him from Blackpool, in Las Vegas to help me celebrate my 50++ Birthday, a couple of weeks ago.

Magic Museum Bellachni - Episode 77

Since 1980 I have lived exclusively from the art of magic with thousands of performances at home and abroad. For me, performing in front of an audience was always (almost always) the best experience. Theater guest performances were added later. Why am I writing this here?

Not out of vanity, but to make a point. Because for the past year and a half, my enjoyment of the art of magic has shifted. Since I opened the Bellachini Museum, my life has literally taken on a new meaning. I can inspire people with my, our, art in a completely different way by telling them about the history and the many historical events. Sayings like: 'I did not know magic had been around for so long.' Or: 'I was completely unaware that women do magic too.'
Such statements are now worth much more to me than applause for a magic trick. The current exhibition on "Magic in women's hands" in particular shows how much we can still work on the image of magic.

In this context, I was also very surprised that the new FISM President wants to expand the categories of FISM competitions to include non-magical arts. In the future, arts such as ventriloquism, balloon modeling and similar arts will also be judged at FISM competitions. I do not think this will improve the image of the art of magic. I would be interested to hear the opinions of other colleagues.

Maybe I will hear from you?

See you next week.

Fired-Up Magician

Magicians love playing with fire! As a kid magician, I opened my show by producing the U.F. Grant Super-Jet Fire Bowl from my cape, and then producing paper streamers from the flames. One of my early-stage illusions was the Head Cremation, in which I inserted a flaming torch into a cannister placed over a girl's head, which turned into a skull!

Later, I started opening my show by entering with a flaming torch that changed into a cane. Most of my fire magic used lighter fluid, and I knew that stage managers were worried about the use of fire. So, I painted the lighter fluid can gold, and explained to stage managers that it was "Magic Fire," that it would not harm anything.

To prove that the "Magic Fire" was not dangerous, I would squirt some lighter fluid on my pants leg and set it aflame with a match. After a few seconds, I would brush off the flame, which quickly went out. Sometimes, I would do the same stunt pouring the fluid into my hand. Since it is initially the fumes that are burning, and not your hand or pants leg, this demonstration rarely caused any damage.

And of course, there is Flash Paper, which generally burns so quickly that nothing is harmed. Unless it is old flash paper, and it settles on the living room carpet before going out. (Do not ask me how I know!)

I love the Hot Book, which is great for Magic With a Message. And I have had a lot of fun with the Fire Wallet. And candles have to be lighted, right?
More burning issues next week!

The Fantastic Magic Center is dedicated to preserving and sharing the art of magic. But I cannot do it without your help. My Patreon account is the same place as my free weekly podcast:

10. GCAAN - John Carey #234
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)

GCAAN is my approach to a card at any number, using as the underlying method the Gilbreath principle. You will require two decks. In the red deck take out the Two of Clubs, Five of Hearts, Six of Diamonds, Eight of Spades, and the Nine of Hearts. Place them on top of the deck
with the Two of Clubs uppermost. Now take out the mates of the first four cards and add a duplicate Nine of Hearts to them. Set this packet in the reverse order of the cards on top of the deck, so they will run Nine of Hearts, Eight of Clubs, Six of Hearts, Five of Diamonds, and Two of Spades. Pop that packet into the middle of the deck with a Joker above the duplicate Nine of Hearts. Take a blue deck and remove the Nine of Hearts from it and position it twenty first from the top of the deck.

Bring out both cased decks and toss them onto the table. Ask a participant to freely name red or blue? If they say red you pick up that deck and say you will work with that. Then hand them the blue deck and ask them to place it inside their pocket. However if they say blue, simply hand that
deck to them and ask them to pocket it. Pick up the red deck and remove the cards. A simple magician's choice.

Execute a false shuffle or cut if you so wish. Then turn the deck face-up. "Let's remove the Joker before we start." Hand to hand spread through the deck and separate the hands at the Joker so that it is on the face of the left-hand packet. Push it off to one side and discard it, then place both packets you are holding face-down next to each other in position for a tabled riffle shuffle. Ask your participant to riffle shuffle the deck and then square up. Then ask them to deal five cards from the top as you say that you will play a little game of mental Poker with them. Despite the fact that they have genuinely shuffled the deck, the cards they have dealt will consist of a Two, Five, Six, Eight, and Nine of Hearts thanks to Gilbreath.

Have your helper table the deck and pick up the packet they dealt. Ask them to mix the packet and then spread it with the faces towards themselves, like a hand of Poker. "So, Fabrice, you shuffled the deck and dealt a hand of Poker. Please think of the highest card you see. Then take
that card out and drop it on top of the deck. Next add up the values or numbers of the other cards to form a random number in your mind. You have a total? Put those cards on top of the deck and replace the cards inside the box. So now you are thinking of a card and a number yes?" They will confirm that they indeed are. The number they are thinking of will be 21 and the card the Nine of Hearts.

Everything looks so clean and fair. Remind your participant that they placed another deck in their pocket at the start. Ask them to remove the deck and take out the cards. Get them to reveal the name of the card they are thinking of and the number. Then have them deal 20 cards out loud
and face-up into a packet on the table. Stop them at this point to build up suspense. Remind the audience how your helper shuffled the other deck and did everything themselves. Have your helper turn the next card faceup to reveal their thought of card and let them freak out!

This truly is one of the strongest effects in my repertoire. I only use it for special occasions when I want to really do something very special for people. At the risk of immodesty, I believe you have a reputation maker now. Run through it a few times, then work on your presentation and
make the effect you!
