Message by Joan Caesar (Canada)

FISM North America is progressing well, with many world class FISM winners booked for lectures and gala shows.

There are still a few slots open for contestants both in stage and close up. Your act must be between 5-10 minutes long, showing more than one effect. A contestant must also belong to one of the North American FISM organizations.

There will be a $500 prize for the People's Choice winner in each of stage and close up. This is limited to those who belong to the SAM.

Videos must be submitted by June 15 to contest@fism-nacm.com

Mark the dates, August 30-September 2 on your calendars and join us in Arlington Texas to experience a great convention and have lots of fun.

3. A Tribute To David Berglas 3rd June At The Magic Circle
-------------------------------------
Message by Marvin Berglas (UK)

3rd June At The Magic Circle

This very special evening will honour and celebrate the legacy of our former President, David Berglas, MBE at The Magic Circle on June 3rd hosted by Marvin Berglas. There can't be any member of the Magic Circle - or indeed, anyone with an interest in magic - who isn't aware of David's tremendous contribution to the arts of magic and mentalism.

He has influenced and inspired so many with his unique showmanship, originality and creativity. There will some very special guests and members of the Berglas family . You can expect some live performances from a few well known guests - all inspired by some of David's most famous routines.

There will also be a few unique stories, memories and videos honouring David's remarkable life and talents. This is going to be an uplifting, moving and rather poignant evening. However, it will also be a lesson in showmanship as we celebrate, respect and remember the life and legacy of this giant of the magic world. Some unique memorabilia will be available on the night.

Guests are welcome provided you register them in advance in the usual way. Two nights in a row I've been to see Te Radar at the Classic - each night he is revisiting his hit shows to celebrate 30 years in comedy. Three shows left - at 7pm each night. A delight.

4. Lance Burton Had Emergency Eye Surgery
-------------------------------------
Message published on Facebook by Lance Burton forwarded on by Stefan Sageman

On Tuesday, May 21st at 6:00am I had emergency eye surgery.

It was for a torn or detached retina. The surgery was completely successful and I am grateful to live in a country that has such great doctors and surgeons.

My surgeon was Dr. Inder P Singal. He and his entire team were fantastic. It was an emergency surgery, because if it didn't happen quickly I would be blind in my right eye within a short period of time. That said, it was an out-patient procedure. I walked into the surgery center at 6:00am and walked out at 7:30am! I am now recuperating at home.

I also want to thank our local eye doctor, Dr Jacob Burton and his entire staff. They saw me on short notice on Monday afternoon. He took one look at my eye and said we need to get you into surgery immediately! He set it all up and the next thing you know I am on my way to Louisville.
Big thanks to my Brother-In-Law, James Curry, for driving me to Louisville and back home afterwards. Another adventure!

Eta-Lyn stayed to watch Rocky and the cats. She even stayed a few extra days to keep an eye on me! No pun intended.

So I am resting and recuperating. The vision in my right eye should come back soon. Right now it is foggy, but seems to be improving by the hour.

I have a show in Hinton, Oklahoma in a little over two weeks. I will be there! Can't fly in a plane, but the tour bus should be fine. Rocky is excited too!

This eye trouble started on the weekend. It was just a small spot at the bottom of my field of vision. The dead spot kept getting bigger. I wasn't that concerned. Turns out I should have been. It could have been catastrophic! The lesson is pay attention to warning signs!

That's all for now from your favorite one eyed magician!

It's certainly been quite a 7 days for me! My Birthday Reception and Show at the Ahern Hotel in Las Vegas was a really enjoyable occasion and it was great to see so many old friends there, some of whom I hadn't seen for a long time.

The Ahern Hotel proved to be the ideal venue for this event, and their showroom was perfect for the cabaret style show that I'd put together.

My friends Tim & Jake Smithies aka 'Dead Man's Uke', started the show off in style before rising star Mat O'Neill, having memorised the names of everyone present, performed a strong mental routine with two spectators.

Then it was time for a cameo appearance from legendary juggler Kris Kremo. He'd traveled over from Switzerland specially, and he was, as always, terrific. Kris is class personified!

Closing the show was Jeff Hobson. These days running Marvyn's Magic Theater in La Quinta with his wife Yvonne, Jeff kindly drove over to Las Vegas to be a part of the celebrations, and he was in top form, and was better than ever. Like Kris, Jeff is a performer with enormous experience, and boy, does it show! Jeff received a deserved standing ovation from the whole audience.

It was great to see a number of my showbiz friends in the audience, including Kevin James, just back from yet another appearance in the 'Illusionists' Show in Washington, and Wally Eastwood, who had taken a night off from hosting 'V' the Ultimate Variety Show at the Planet Hollywood, and was there with his beautiful wife Heidi. Wally is an incredible performer, not only a superb juggler, but also a very funny comedy entertainer.

There were too many friends present to mention everyone by name, but they included Fielding West, who was flying out the following day to join Lance Burton for one of his '& Friends' shows, Diana Zimmerman who'd flown in from Los Angeles, and Bill Smith, who had just returned to Vegas after producing his very successful Collectors Conference on the Queen Mary in Long Beach.

And it was also good to see George Carden and his wife Alexandra. In case you are not familiar with their names, George is the new owner of the Jungle Palace, the former home of Siegfried & Roy. George is a hugely successful Circus owner, and it is fantastic to see how he has restored the Jungle Palace to its original condition, and is making such an amazing effort to maintain the legacy of those two iconic magicians.

And last but by no means least, it was great to welcome entertainment royalty, the 'Evil Queen' herself, Lynette Chappell, Siegfried & Roy's co-star and leading lady. Lynette is a close friend, wonderful company, and still looks stunning!

No sooner than this brilliant couple of days in Vegas had ended, I found myself flying across the Atlantic to Europe, actually to Lisbon in Portugal, to board a Crystal cruise ship en route to Barcelona, on which I am one of the Special Interest Speakers. I can't think of a better way to end a memorable week.

As I said at the start of this article, it's been quite a 7 days for me! During the pandemic, I wrote a book titled 'MindSharp 4 Today' - Living In The Moment, and as the years rush by, I think it is the only way. In the words of a certain sports brand … 'Just Do It'!

Message by Wittus Witt (Germany)

The exhibition on "Magic in the hands of women" has achieved a lot. When I talked about it here in the last episode, I mentioned that I would be reporting on the exhibition and the performances in my magazine "Magische Welt". I also mentioned that you can get the issue from me with an English translation. The issue is ready and I have translated the texts into English. But now comes the big surprise: I have decided to transfer the English text into the layout of the German edition. So it has now become an English edition. For the first time in the history of the "Magical World".

I have also decided to publish the next issues of the magazine in English. In other words: "Magische Welt" is now also available for the international magic scene. The current issue has just been published in a small print run. So if you would like to get to know this "new" magazine, please write to me.

What does the "Magical World" bring? Reports from the world of magic combined with theoretical essays on many topics. The regular authors currently include: James Hagy, Alexandra Duvivier, Dr Andreas Michel-Andino, Stefan Alexander Rautenberg, Roman Ertl, Luke Dimon and Otto Wessely with a permanent column.

"Magische Welt" is published six times a year, each issue comprising 44 to 48 pages.
So much for today.

Girl From Cape Illusion

I first saw it in New Tops magazine: "As the curtain opens, the performer in conventional white-tie-and-tails with the legendary cape snuggly around him stands on a stage bare of anything that might conceal another adult. Unfastening his cape, he lifts it off his shoulders and shows the inside empty by stretching it to the side. He has barely brought the cape in front of him when his young woman assistant suddenly appears from within it!"

I wanted to do that! So, in 1972, while on Army assignment in Korea, I found wonderful fabrics at the markets: Rich black velvet and shiny red satin for the lining. (I also found the person who would many years later become my "young woman assistant," but that is another story.)
I sent the fabric to my sister, Judy, who turned it into an amazing magician's cape that I still wear today.

But very few of my performing situations were right for the Girl From Cape illusion. Until 2019, when I rented the Scottish Rite Theatre for my 70 Years of Magic celebration. My daughter Carolyn and I rehearsed the illusion, to open the second half of the full-evening show.

But we did not have a dress rehearsal. I decided to wear my bright red tail coat with sequins on the shoulders. When the curtains parted, we were in position. But as I took off the cape with a flourish, it caught on the sequins. Instead of magically producing my assistant, the audience saw where she was hidden.

Carolyn stepped out from behind me and took a bow, but it was awkward to say the least.
OOPS!

9. Transposia - John Carey #234
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)

Transposia is a very direct transposition of the Aces and Jacks, which again highlights the power of a bottom deal. Take out the Aces and Jacks and place them face-up in two tabled groups. Leave the deck faceup on the table. Pick up the Jacks and flip them face-down into left-hand dealers-grip. Then pick up the Aces and flip those face-down on top of the Jacks.

"Let's isolate the Aces in the deck." Apparently deal the Aces face-down onto the face of the tabled deck. Actually though bottom deal the Jacks and ask your helper to cut the deck, complete the cut and then turn it face-down.

"Watch closely now. The fastest trick in the world!" Make a magical gesture over the packet in the left hand and then using the right hand ribbon spread the deck widely, showing a startling appearance of the face-up Jacks. A moment later, execute a through-the-fist flourish of the packet in the left hand to show the Aces and the transposition is complete.
