2. Eric DeCamps On The Magic Word Podcast
-------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells MIMC
Last
week we reported on all three days of activities at the
Magic Collectors Expo on the Queen Mary in Long Beach, California.
It followed the reports from the 4F convention on the opposite
coast in Buffalo, New York. While at the 4F, we sat down
with New York magician, Eric DeCamps. He has his own one-man
magic show and was greatly influenced by Rene Lavand, from
Argentina. This week Eric talks about his influences in
magic and how he developed his show.
You
can listen wherever you get your podcasts, but to watch
some videos, read the blog, see some photos, and listen
online, then please visit: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/834-eric-decamps
I
also suggest that you please subscribe to the podcast and
follow us on social media like Facebook, Instagram, and
X. And be sure to subscribe to the podletter for weekly
updates on who is on this week's episode, who's coming next
week, plus suggestions from the archives.
One
more thing of note, as this update is being written, I am
in Los Angeles, California, and waiting with great anticipation
of attending the annual Awards Ceremony for the Academy
of Magical Arts (the Magic Castle) on Friday 17 May where
I will be receiving a Special Fellowship in recognition
of the body of work I have produced over the past 12 years
with the Magic Word Podcast. It never would have been possible
without you, the listener, who tunes in each week and of
course, to all of those who have sat or stood behind my
microphone to give their voices to the digital ages. Thank
you, one and all.

I
got a nice surprise this week when I met up in Las Vegas
with Magic Christian from Vienna. He is an old friend and
he was in town after attending Bill Smith's excellent Magic
Collector's event which took place this year on the Queen
Mary in Long Beach.
Christian
has enjoyed a remarkable career, and there is so much more
to him than the incredible card manipulations that he is
famous for in the world of magic. He is a very talented
designer, and he put those skills to use on many occasions
designing some innovative promotions for numerous corporate
clients. We chatted for a few hours and he is a fascinating
character and has had an amazing career.
It's
been another memorable day today , even though as I write
this, my 'special' event which is happening tonight hasn't
even started yet!
The
sound and lighting check was a wonderful experience! Why,
you may ask? It was because the two headline performers
are such great pros. Both Kris Kremo and Jeff Hobson are
without doubt right up there with the best in the business,
and watching them do their rehearsal and sound and lighting
checks is a lesson in itself.
They
have both performed thousands of shows and their professionalism
stands out like a beacon. It's a joy to work with them,
and I'm blessed to call them my close friends.
Kris
Kremo is a true juggling legend, and he has inspired so
many aspiring jugglers. What a performer!

Message by Wittus Witt (Germany)
Firstly,
congratulations to Paul Stone, who celebrated his 50th plus
birthday a few days ago. Keep going, Paul, your "turned
over" stones are marvellous.
A
new "stone" was also turned over in Hamburg: at
last, women in the art of magic received the same attention
that men have been receiving for many years. The big theatre
performance with Alana, Michelle, Belinda and Stefan was
terrific. A short film recording can now be seen here:
https://youtu.be/G1pe6MRhk-k
Now
we continue non-stop with the next issue of the magazine
"Magische Welt". Including a wonderful article
by Prof. Dr Reinhard Hohlfeld, who looks at the theoretical
side of the art of magic. This time it's about illusions
of perception, how they come about, what triggers them and
what image they leave behind.
For
15 years, the trick descriptions have been published in
a separate issue. I believe that Magische Welt is the only
magic magazine to consistently implement this separation.
I have labelled this supplement "magic salt".
Each issue comprises between 12 and 16 pages and deals exclusively
with descriptions of tricks.
In
the current issue, the well-known Swiss magician Christian
Scherer dispels some of the prejudices in the art of magic.
Why, for example, do many magicians use red balls for the
cups and balls? Why are the cups often "loaded"
from the side and not directly from the front? All in all,
very interesting questions to improve your own performances
as much as possible.
Finally,
the "small" piece of information that I have now
welcomed the 3,115th visitor to my Bellachini Museum ...
See
you next time

Prof.
Cheer's Comedy Rope Trick
I
started performing "The Rope Trick" in 1957 (See
episode #53 of this series.). But I was interested in adding
a Grand Finale.. In 1965, Gene Anderson showed me how to
set up the Prof. Cheer's Comedy Rope Trick.
I
still have those diagrams that Gene drew for me, and once
I started performing the routine regularly, I made a point
of purchasing the trick from a reputable dealer, so that
the inventor might get some benefit.
I
had my own innovations, of course. I figured out how to
pack the rope into a hollow cummerbund, which simplified
the set-up. A director once told me I could improve the
impact by standing up on a chair during the final reveal.
I have found that the routine is popular with both kids
and adults.
But
I have been writing about OOPS moments, so let me tell you
about a Halloween library show in which the trick did not
go as planned.
I
pulled the rope out of my left sleeve, pretending to do
the "Stretching Rope" trick. Then I pulled it
out of my left pants leg. The audience was laughing uproariously.
It was going great!
But then I started pulling it out of my right pants leg,
and it got stuck. That sometimes happens, so I just pulled
harder. And harder. And harder! I could not get the rope
to move.
Finally,
I had to turn my back to the audience, unzip my pants, unbuckle
the waist, and reach inside and gather up all the rope.
I threw it onto the floor, buckled and zipped my pants,
and turned back around.
OOPS!

10. Let's Split! - John Carey #233
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
If
you want a strong and snappy gambling style effect that
doesn't go on forever, I think you may like this. Remove
the Aces and Jacks from your deck and discard the deck.
Casually get the Aces in CHSD order from the top and the
Jacks in CHSD order from the face. Of course you can pre-set
this ahead of time if you wish.
"Aces
and Jacks. Back in the day my game was Poker. Display the
Jacks and flip them face-down into dealing grip. Pick up
the face-up Aces and flip them face-down on top. "Let's
put the cards in pairs. Ace, Ace, Ace, Ace, Jack, Jack,
Jack, Jack." As you say this you start by dealing an
Ace face-down and then bottom deal a Jack on top of it.
Then deal an Ace next to the pair and once more bottom deal
a Jack on top of the single card. Repeat this making a third
pair, dealing a top, followed by a bottom. Finally, fairly
deal the last two cards one on top of the other into a packet
at the far right end of the row. Keep a nice, smooth tempo
as you do the layout.
I
next get one spectator to cover the two pairs of cards on
the left of the row with both hands and another spectator
to cover the remaining two packets. "Like I said earlier,
my game used to be Poker. But not anymore. Watch!"
Make the moment over the spectators hands and ask them to
lift them away. Pick up the left end pair and deal them
face-up to reveal a Blackjack in Clubs. Repeat this with
the remaining three pairs, showing Blackjacks in Hearts,
Spades and Diamonds. Take the money and start the car!
Executing
a bottom-deal from a small packet is much easier than a
deck. I use the Doctor Elliot bottom-deal that uses a straddle-grip,
that is fully explained in Dai Vernon's Ultimate Card Secrets.
