2. 2024 MAGIC Live!
-------------------------------------
Message by Stan Allen (US)
The
next MAGIC Live will be August 4-7, 2024.
In previous posts here, I've written about content and community
and surprise.
Today, I'd like to cover risk - specifically, high and low:
High Risk
People tell me there are a number of reasons why they return
to this convention each year. And one of those is that we
are willing to take risks, try new things, get out of the
ol' (convention) box.
Our goal has always been to introduce new experiences, such
as "seeing" magic while blindfolded, or a performance
without a performer, or an interactive journey in which
each member of the audience played a role in solving the
mysteries. Over the years, we've also offered "story
shows" covering a wide range of subjects - the most
famous illusion in the world, a junior magic club that lives
on, the back pages of a magic magazine, and an iconic book
brought to life by today's stars of magic.
They were all risks, for sure. But all worth taking. What
we've learned is that, at least for MAGIC Live, playing
safe is just too risky!
Low Risk
While our risk level might be a bit high, we want to make
registering for MAGIC Live as low-risk as possible. That's
why your registration is 90% refundable all the way through
June 3rd. You can also transfer (sell, barter, giveaway?)
your registration to a person of your choice any time prior
to the start of the event.
Sign up now, because the one thing you don't want to risk
is missing out.
Look forward to seeing you at MAGIC Live!

4. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article #151
-------------------------------------
Message by Paul Stone (US)
It
was really nice to receive an email this week from an old
friend in England following my last article . I've known
Audrey Miller for many years, she was the wife and better
half of Past IBM British Ring President, (twice if my memory
serves me right) Brian Miller.
Audrey
reminded me that there is a bench in memory of Bob Read
in the gardens of the Actors Church in Covent Garden, in
London, and that the bench depicts the 'Cups & Balls'.
A worthy tribute to a wonderful magician, and very fitting
that he has this legacy.
Back
in the late 1970's, early 1980's, I became a Tradeshow magician.
At that time there weren't that many full time working Tradeshow
performers. The main exponents were from USA, Eddie Tullock,
Jim Ryan and the gentleman who became my mentor, Bud Dietrich.
Bud
lived in Belleville, Illinois, and he used to visit London
every year to 'front' the St Louis Convention & Visitors
Bureau booth at the World Travel Show, which was the biggest
in the travel industry at that time.
The
reason I mention the word 'gentleman' was because Bud was
always immaculately dressed with a blazer, shirt and tie,
and was an all-round class act. His technique for drawing
crowds never failed, and he never needed to resort to shouting.
Bud generously showed me the ropes and taught me the Tradeshow
business. As a result, I worked at Tradeshows in several
countries for over ten years.
I
mention this because I still believe that for a young magic
performer, who is serious about learning this specialised
branch of the business, and is not afraid of working hard,
and enduring long days at the booth, it still offers one
of the most lucrative opportunities available.
My
tradeshow performing days are now well behind me, but I
have owned a tradeshow domain name for several years that
I believe would greatly help to open the door to potential
tradeshow work for any aspiring young or not so young, magician,
who wants to break into this very rewarding field of magic.
So,
if you, or someone you know, is genuinely interested, they
should contact me at paulstonespeaks@gmail.com for more
details.
I
was delighted to read this week that Kohl & Co have
been awarded the Milbourne Christopher 'Lifetime Achievement
Award'. Whilst probably not an act that could have worked
in the corporate marketplace, it was without doubt one of
the funniest and entertaining magic convention comedy acts
that I have ever seen. Congratulations to them, on a very
well deserved award.
Finally
this week, on a completely different subject, not even magic
related, but that I found interesting. I was recently driving
from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, and to pass the time I listened
to a box set of CD's - yes my car has a CD player and I
know my sons think I'm a dinosaur! This was a set of four
CD's with 75 Hit Songs from the '1960's'.
And
I had a eureka moment, actually several of them, because
as I listened, I realised, the songs had real words, with
real meanings. It was so refreshingly different from the
grunts, groans and constant repetition of the same one line
in many of today's so called 'hits'. And I could sing along
to most of them. What a thrill!

7. Magic Museum Bellachini - Episode 70
---------------------------------------------
Message by Wittus Witt (Germany)
A
small anniversary: the 70th episode. Thanks to everyone
who reads my articles.
Today
I sent out the latest issue of Magische Welt magazine. It's
the second issue this year. As I've written before, I'm
really glad that I don't have to publish "MW"
12 times a year. Every other month is already a lot of work
for me.
Since
I started publishing the magazine (founded in 1952 by W.
Geissler-Werry) in 2000, I have introduced the "Historical"
section, in which I remember forgotten magicians and female
magicians.
In
this second issue, I remember the youngest female magician
in Germany at the time. She may even have been the youngest
female magician in the world, performing professionally
in variety shows at the age of 12. She was "Constanze",
who was born Ursula Ackermann on July 22, 1938 in Hamburg.
She died a few weeks ago, on January 22, 2024 in Switzerland.
She performed until 1973. She made guest appearances in
many famous variety theaters such as the Friedrichstadt-Palast
in Berlin and the Palladium Theater in Düsseldorf.
Incidentally,
her father and grandfather were also professional magicians.
Both had the first name Georg and the last name Ackermann.
Georg Ackermann mainly performed under the stage name "Trickson".
Both were very well known in Germany.
I
got in touch with Constanze's son, André, through
my friend and editor Roman Ertl. He donated a lot of photos
and press articles by and about Constanze for my museum.
Fortunately, I was able to use some of the information for
the large volume accompanying the exhibition "Magic
in Women's Hands".
Constanze
really was a very pretty girl with an enchanting smile.
I was amazed by some of the tricks she performed back then.
These included a trick with clay pipes from which she produced
smoke. This would certainly be completely unthinkable today;
firstly because tricks with tobacco smoke are no longer
in keeping with the times and secondly - and more importantly
- a child who smokes is simply unthinkable.
You
can see a few photos in the Magic-Pedia:
https://www.zauber-pedia.de/index.php?title=Constanze
And
you can also find out more about Constanze in my YouTube
movie.
https://youtu.be/mrv1F8bpi5Q
I
am now very interested to know whether there are any other
young female magicians. We know about Gloria Dae, but were
there any other very young ladies who performed magic (professionally)?
I
look forward to any information.

8. Tales From The Fantastic Magic Center - #82

Message by Kent Cummins, Director (US)
The
Fantastic Magic Center EXPO
It's
a one-day mini magic convention in Georgetown, Texas!
What are your plans for Saturday, April 27?
I
am excited to host the first-ever Fantastic Magic Center
EXPO from 10 am to 4 pm, with one of everything that you
would find at any magic convention: lecture, magic show,
dealer, museum tour, magic auction.
The
lecture is on "The Magic of Austin." Most people
don't realize that Austin, Texas is one of the most important
magic locations in the world! The magic show is by "Peter
the Adequate," one of the most entertaining magicians
anywhere. The dealer will be Magic Hotline, with a Vintage
Magic Shop featuring hundreds of items from nearly a dozen
magic estates. The museum tour will include eight rooms
filled with amazing magical memorabilia. The magic auction
will be live on stage with some incredible, one-of-a-kind
items.
What
does it cost? Just $75 per person.
What
do you get? You will get $50 in Magic Money to spend at
the auction and the vintage magic shop. We will provide
lunch, drinks and snacks. Lecture notes are free. We are
preparing a gift bag with well over $100 worth of books,
magazines, magic tricks and memorabilia.
The
event is limited to 40 people; there are still 27 tickets
available as I write this, but most of those have probably
been sold by the time you read this. If you want to participate,
go to MagicHotline.com and click on "Tickets"
to see if there is any availability.
My
email address is at the bottom of this column if you have
questions or need more information. Or listen to my podcast.
The
Fantastic Magic Center is dedicated to preserving and sharing
the art of magic. But I can't do it without your help. My
Patreon account is the same place as my free weekly podcast:

9. Sleightless CTB - John Carey #228
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
Sleightless
is my entry into the 'Card to Card Box' genre of effect.
A freely named card teleports to the box in a very sneaky
fashion. Set the two Jokers on top of the face-down deck
and close the halfmoon flap under the top Joker and you're
ready to work.
Take
out the box and remove the cards, secretly leaving the top
Joker behind. Set the box aside, mouth down and have the
deck shuffled. Now perform a couple of your favourite card
effects before going into this. "Shannon, I'm just
curious, before we go any further. If I was to ask you to
name a card, you might say? The Three of Clubs isn't very
common. But do you know the cards people never name? The
Jokers!
I
guess it's because they don't have any definitive value.
Let's remove them before we try something else." So
during the above verbiage spread through the cards with
the faces of the cards towards you and upjog the Joker and
the Three of Clubs, in this example. Table the deck and
execute a quick and casual flushtration display, showing
two Jokers. You may need to switch the two cards you remove
from the deck so that the Joker is the face card of the
pair. Put the two cards away in the box as you ask your
helper to shuffle the deck.
Then
get your spectator to table the deck and cover it with either
hand. "A few moments ago you named any card right?
A free choice too yes? Watch as I wave my hand and your
card jumps to the top of the deck under your hand. Now take
a look?" They do and it's not their card. "Ah
maybe it got confused and sunk to the bottom?" Once
again, no joy. "No problem, as I can tell you right
now that the card you named is in the middle!" This
gets a laugh and or a groan. Ask your helper to spread the
deck face-up and remove the card they simply named. Of course,
they won't find it. "Maybe it got tired and went home."
Look over towards the card box and pick it up. Open it and
remove the three face-down cards inside. Turn the top and
bottom cards of this packet face-up, showing a sandwich
of two Jokers and a face-down card. Slowly extract that
card, turn it over and reveal their freely named selection.
I
don't consider the Flushtration display or count as really
a move. More a movement. Anyways it's so simple, especially
with just two cards. When you ask your participant to name
any card, be casual as if you're just curious and not actually
in performance mode. Be relaxed as you apparently remove
then display the Jokers. The rest of the presentation is
all about time misdirection before revealing the final translocation.
