2. 150 Years Ago Magician And Escapologist Harry Houdini
Was Born
-------------------------------------
Message posted on Facebook by Eric Henning
150
years ago, on the 24th of March, 1874, the iconic magician
and escapologist Harry Houdini was born in Budapest, Hungary.
He was one of seven children born to Rabbi Mayer Sámuel
Weisz and Cecília Steiner, with the birth name of
Erik Weisz. The family emigrated to Appleton, Wisconsin
where his father served as rabbi.
During
his life Harry, who desperately wanted to be recognised
as a true American, always claimed Appleton as his Birthplace.
He
managed to pack a lot into his relatively short life. After
his family moved to NYC, he apprenticed to a locksmith,
and had other odd jobs before learning some magic tricks
and joining a traveling show. He did a little bit of everything,
but one day changed his life forever.
He was doing his magic act, which included an escape routine,
when a local police officer in the audience challenged Houdini
to escape from the officer's own regulation handcuffs. Houdini,
already familiar with most of the cuffs in use, agreed,
and his escape caused a sensation, landing him on the front
page of the local newspapers.
That
was the turning point. The Challenge Handcuff Escape became
the foundation of Houdini's growing fame and eventual legend.
There
were many other escape artists working in Houdini's day,
and some imitated his challenge escape. But then, he added
one finishing touch.
When
others escaped, their ropes, chains and handcuffs were opened.
It was an amazing display of skill, but still a stunt. When
Houdini escaped, all of his restraints, even the boxes and
cages he had been locked in, were still locked. Many of
locks sealed with sealing wax were undisturbed. It went
beyond a stunt and became magic.
Houdini,
it was recently revealed, also was a spy for the USA during
WWI, carrying valuable information to and from England.
Houdini
joined the Magic Circle in London, and having become a 33°
Master Mason, founded the Society of American Magicians,
or S.A.M., and modeled its rituals after Freemasonry.
Houdini
died too soon, of peritonitis, from an inflamed appendix
that was ruptured by a blow to his abdomen, on Halloween
1926 at the age of fifty-two. He may not have been the best
magician, illusionist or escapologist of all time, but he
is certainly the most memorable, and his name will live
on long after the rest of us have been forgotten. Happy
Birthday, Harry!
"My
brain is the key that sets me free." - Harry Houdini

5. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article #149
-------------------------------------
Message by Paul Stone (US)
Over
the past three years of writing articles for Magic New Zealand,
I have often extolled the virtues and the importance of
remembering the many great magicians that have gone before
us.
Sadly,
even the very best performers seem to be far too quickly
forgotten which is a great shame. Names like Fred Kaps,
Marvyn Roy, Richard Ross, Tommy Wonder, Harry Blackstone
Jnr, Shimada, Paul Daniels, Hans Moretti, Peter Reveen rarely
get spoken about.
One
name that I would add to that list is Ken Brooke. Although
Ken was known predominantly in the magic world as a dealer,
he was in fact a wonderful performer, an excellent magician
who was blessed with a tremendous comedic talent. He was
also a huge influence on the careers of many top professionals
including Paul Daniels and Johnny Thompson.
In
a couple of weeks I will be presenting a short talk about
Ken at the Magic Castle in Hollywood, and it will be interesting
to see how many people show up, and indeed that even remember
Ken. I was very fortunate to be mentored by Ken, as was
probably Ken's most successful student Nick Lewin, who went
on to pave a terrific career for himself. I know that Nick
will unhesitatingly acknowledge the part that Ken played
in launching his career.
Last
week I mentioned Mac King's successful appearance at the
recent Blackpool Convention where he was on top form. I
had to smile when I heard a comment from one of the attendees
after Mac's show. Discussing Mac's performance, this magician
(?) whilst agreeing that Mac had gone well, bemoaned the
fact that he was 'still doing the same tricks', that he
had seen him perform before!
This
highlighted perfectly for me the difference between a pro
and a semi-pro or hobbyist magician. Once a pro has found
the right tricks and routines that suit them and more importantly
work for an audience, they rarely change their core effects.
Why indeed would they?
In
Mac's case, twenty five years headlining his one man show
in Las Vegas tells its own story!
And
now onto a completely different subject! Whilst I can't
be described as a chocoholic, I've always been a big fan
of Cadbury's chocolate which is now produced in England,
Australia and USA.
But
for any fan of the original British Cadbury's, beware of
the imitators! I've just returned from a trip that took
me to New Zealand where there were all sorts of Cadbury's
products on offer, in fact more than I've ever seen in England.
They
looked exactly the same as those found in UK and were displayed
in the same trademark wrappers .. but they didn't taste
the same!! I'm not sure if it was the milk that was different,
probably because British cows are superior, but it just
didn't have the same taste!
And
in USA, Cadbury's chocolate is produced under licence by
Hershey's, and it is way too sweet! So, don't be fooled
by the wrappers there either!
And
in case you were wondering how this has any relevance to
my comments about Pro magicians, the parallels are clear
- don't change what works, the original is almost always
the best version!

9. British Illusionist Fred Van Buren Obituary
-------------------------------------
Message by Andrew Van Buren (UK)
It
is less than four years since my mum 'Connie Greta' passed
away and now sadly my dad Fred Van Buren has joined her.
Dad
was born in Sandbech. Cheshire, England on 5 November 1932
and at a young age fell in love with circus and showbusiness,
under the tuition of Bob Gandey dad learned about the old
shows and showmanship, absorbing the stories and skills
as he went along, in his teenage years he worked a trapeze
act, clowning, magic, illusions, performed monologues, played
the organ and even put his own shows on, but after meeting
my mum the magic and illusions became the career path, helped
by the fact that upon leaving school his mother insisted
he do an apprenticeship, so he could get a 'proper' job,
little did she realise that cabinet making was a perfect
skill for building illusions.
Originally
performing through the 1940's as 'Freddee', then the 1950's
as Yoxani, and with mum as the Amazing Yoxani's, they carved
a career in circus, outdoor events and theatre variety,
particularly with the insistence that all of his effects
had to be able to be worked in the round, surrounded by
the audience. During this time they revolutionised many
stage illusions by redesign and building, plus created a
number of new effects, all to be worked surrounded by the
audience.
In
1961 their agents, Don Ross and Pauline Marks, changed the
Yoxani's name to Van Buren & Greta, plus their nationality
to Dutch, dad was never comfortable with this, but it worked,
the number one theatre work began to roll in for this new
continental illusion act, they went on to appear on television
numerous times, including repeatedly with British television
magician David Nixon and dad in 1960 first put the Multiplying
Bottles onto British TV.
During
the 1960's they truly polished their act, working the London
banquet scene presenting big illusions in the middle of
the dance floor, it was here that lifelong friendships were
created with magicians Robert Harbin, Billy McComb and Harold
Taylor. Also, during this time Dad had a meeting with Walt
Disney and Gerald Palmer, which resulted in the creation
of new illusions and a Christmas season in Wembley Empire
Pool as part of Snow White on Ice, presenting illusions
on the middle of the ice, followed by a year-long tour.
Moving
to Newcastle-under-Lyme in Staffordshire dad's illusion
building and inventing expanded to bigger effects, many
of which I still present, his most famous being 'Van Buren's
Vanishing Motorbike and Rider Surrounded', televised for
the first time in 1976. Van Buren's Fluorescent Light Tube
Penetration, invented in 1974 as an evolution to 'Experiment
13' with the blessing of their great friend Robert Harbin,
it inspired so many following variants of fluorescent light
tube effects and copies. The Van Buren examined Sub Trunk
transforming into a Flower Garden Finale was another talking
point, along with various other big illusions caused the
press to refer to dad as "presenting 21st Century Miracles".
Through
the 1970's mum and dad appeared in cabaret, theatre, television
and worked numerous Summer Seasons with many stars of the
day, too many to list. They went on to top the bill with
more TV appearances, including advising on the Muppet Show,
and world touring their own full large-scale illusion shows,
complete with a lineup of dancer assistants and backstage
team, regularly employing other acts to appear alongside
them too, while transporting the illusions in fleets of
lorries and trailers.
During
this time Jay Marshall regularly tried to persuade my parents
to tour America, but they were too busy around Europe. They
appeared in the Grand Place Brussels presenting their Vanishing
Motorcycle Illusion in the 1979 FISM World Congress of Magic
Convention, direct from a tour of Sweden, also closing the
bill of the BBC Magic Circle TV Show from Blazers Windsor.
All an amazing apprenticeship for me touring with them.
Through
the 1980's the shows were often massive but they decided
to fly even further under the 'magic fraternity' radar,
instead concentrating purely on public shows, then in the
1990's both mum and dad slowed off, their last official
show was in 1996. Afterwards I would always try to keep
them involved behind the scenes, telling them about my tours
and adventures, plus often building new illusions alongside
dad, with mum cleaning up after us.
In
2012 dad was brought back into the spotlight, being awarded
the rank of Honorary Member of the Inner Magic Circle with
Gold Star. In 2014 The Circus Friends Association presented
mum and dad with The Circus Lifetime Achievement Award.
2017 during the Blackpool Magic Convention they were presented
the Neville King Lifetime Achievement Award, then in 2019
mum and dad were awarded the 'Freedom of the Borough of
Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire' for their lifetime
of originality and achievements in showiness.
Dad
passed away on 6th March 2024, aged 91, messages of condolence
rapidly went past a thousand. We never know the impact we
have on others, so when comments like 'legend', 'trail blazer',
'inspiration', 'maverick', 'Showman' and "I remember
seeing them when I was a kid", keep recurring in the
messages, I think it's fair to say that both mum and dad
have left their mark.

10. Magic Museum Bellachini - Episode 68
---------------------------------------------
Message by Wittus Witt (Germany)
The
Bellachini Museum naturally also has a (small) museum shop
selling magical objects. In addition to my own magic books,
which I have published in the last few years, and above
all a book that describes the development of magic history
in a concise form with lots of pictures, there is also a
very special magic box that you can buy: "21 tricks
in a matchbox". In fact, there are 21 small objects
in a matchbox, which are described with illustrated instructions.
However,
the basic idea for the world's smallest magic box did not
come from me, but from the English magician Edward Victor
(1887-1964), who published "20 Tricks in a Matchbox"
at the end of the 1940s. Today it is a sought-after rarity
among magic set collectors. I only know of two fellow collectors
who also have a Victor set in their collection.
I
liked the idea so much that I really wanted to copy it,
but with what I think are a few improvements.
Eward
Victor's version
(you
can see it here: https://www.zauber-pedia.de/index.php?title=20_Tricks_In_A_Matchbox
)
consisted
of a matchbox (of course!) and a separate instruction booklet.
I didn't like that both pieces came loose, meaning you could
lose each piece individually. I found that a disadvantage.
To
distinguish myself "somewhat" from the original,
I changed the title to "21 Tricks in a Matchbox"
and designed a small box (I am a qualified designer) in
which both parts can be stored. The instructions are designed
in the form of a leporello and glued into the lid of the
box in which the matchbox also has its place. So you can
always keep both pieces together.
My
first version came onto the market in 1991. I presented
it at the FISM World Congress in Lausanne. At that time,
I had made a version with English texts especially for the
congress. Almost all the magic sets I took with me sold
out within a day. I have to say, however, that US magician
and dealer Bob Little (1931-2022) was the one who bought
up the largest share. He was so enthusiastic about the idea
that he later ordered another large number.
I
then produced another edition in 2001, which also sold out
pretty quickly. It wasn't until 2022 that I remembered it
again when I was planning the Bellachini Museum and thinking
about what I could offer visitors. This edition is now also
sold out and I am producing another one.
I
remembered that one of my most prominent owners of the magic
box is none other than David Copperfield. A German TV editorial
team, for whom I created many programs back then, brought
us together in 1996 when David was on tour in Germany again.
We met for a really nice short chat, during which I gave
him a copy of "21 Tricks in a Matchbox". David
thanked me "well done".

next week: Happy Easter to everyone.

--------------------------------------------
Message by Kent Cummins, Director (US)
Texas
Book Festival
I
said that the magic word when I was Mysto the Magician was,
"LIBRARY." Growing up in a small Texas border
town in the fifties meant almost no access to magic stores,
magic clubs, or magicians. I started learning magic by devouring
the magic books in the Del Rio Public library.
Libraries continued to be a wonderful source of magical
knowledge throughout my life. We moved to Austin, Texas
in 1976, and twenty years later, the Texas Book Festival
began. The festival included a Children's Entertainment
Tent, and of course they hired me to perform with my "Magic
of Books" program.
Many
of the local children's entertainers were hired, but the
organizers noticed that I would have a large crowd, even
if I was the opening act, before the festival was full of
people.
Why
did I draw the biggest crowd? You might call it, "Marketing
Magic" the name of my column for The Linking Ring magazine.
I had started the Magic camp just a few years earlier, so
I promoted my appearance heavily to Magic camp kids and
their parents.
Members
of the two Austin magic clubs would come to see the show.
And I always hired a pre-show performer to walk round the
festival grounds letting people know about the show. "FREE
Magic Show in ten minutes
follow me!"
I
would often open by magically appearing from my Book of
Magic illusion. After that, my show was the same as my regular
library show. Some years, I was also able to help kids make
their own magic wands.
I
loved the festival, and got to meet fans and sell souvenirs
after the show.

12. Brainwavesque - John Carey #226
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
Brainwavesque
is the culmination of many hours of study attempting to
create a Brainwave effect with regular cards. The gaffed
version is great, but I don't use gaffs so...
Let's
say your working deck is blue. From it remove the two Jokers
and the Ace of Clubs, Four of Hearts, Seven of Spades, and
Ten of Diamonds, then discard them or give them to your
dog as a snack. Replace them with those exact same cards
from a red deck plus the Jokers, placing the
Jokers into different parts of the deck and putting the
four stranger cards in any order face-down on top. Pop the
deck inside a red card box and your prep is complete.
Bring
out the deck and remove the cards from the box. They see
red cards coming out of a red box, so everything looks fair.
Flip the deck face-up and execute a centre Hindu Shuffle,
pulling out a block from the middle and shuffling it onto
the face of the other cards. Square up and turn the deck
face-down. "I could have you select a card by dealing
like this, but let's do something way fairer."
As
you say the above deal three cards face-down to the table
and then pick them up and replace them on top. Four red
backs have been seen and it's very subtle. "Let's take
out the Jokers first." Turn the deck face-up and spread,
upjogging the Jokers when you see them. Swivel them out
of the deck and flip them face-down onto the face of the
deck. A moment later push them off the deck and pocket them.
Another subtle show of two red backs.
"As
I spread the cards just call out any card you see please?"
Spread the face-up deck in the hands and ask your participant
to name any card they like, obviously keeping your four
stranger cards at the rear hidden. Remove that card and
table it face-up. "When you go home later I want
you to remember something important. You could have named
any card. You could have said this one or that one, that
one or this one or indeed this card or that card right?"
Suiting
actions to words, as we say the above a most convincing
optical style display will be executed, which shows many
red backs. Rhythm is essential to make this very deceptive.
Cut off around a quarter of the faceup deck and table it.
Then flip the deck face-down from right to left and deal
off a face-down card in front of it. Turn the deck face-up
and cut off another quarter and table it to the right of
the first packet and then flip the deck face-down and deal
a card in front of the second packet.
Repeat
this one more time, cutting off a small packet and tabling
it to the right of the second packet, flipping the deck
face-down and dealing a card in front of it. Flip the remaining
cards you hold face-up and then drop the three tabled packets
on top, one at a time. Turn the deck face-down and then
pick up each of the three face-down tabled cards, flash
their faces and drop each on top of the deck one after the
other and then square up and table the deck.
Your
work is done. "From 52 pieces of paper you named any
card. Sometimes things happen in life that are merely chance.
But then other times things happen that simply can't be
explained. Please turn over your card. Now that's ridiculous!"
This
effect is all about perception. Not one word is wasted as
we allow our spectators' perception to take themselves on
a journey, as their minds fill in the blanks. Don't hurry
the effect. Work at a smooth pace and you will have a worker
on your hands.
