3. FISM Europe Is Busy Hiring Magicians
-------------------------------------
Message by Joan Caesar (Canada)

FISM Europe is busy hiring magicians you'll want to see in May. In an e-mail they said that 'each artist will bring something new: something they have never done before, never published and never seen online.' And what a line-up! So far the artists include:

Luke Jermay (United Kingdom) performing close-up and a lecture.
He has performed in more than 20 countries, including his native United Kingdom and the United States, in venues from local taverns to the London Palladium at the annual International Magic Convention in London, England. Best known for his use of suggestion and the apparent use of covert forms of psychological influence.

Armando Lucero (United States) performing Close-up Gala
With appearances in Las Vegas, Dick Foster's productions, international TV shows, universities, and various theaters, he has consistently pushed the boundaries of magic. Beyond entertainment, Lucero utilizes his expertise to enhance self-awareness, teaching the intricacies of perceptual engineering. Over the past sixteen years, he has shared his insights with diverse audiences, including magicians, physicists, artists, doctors, and professionals from various fields. Lucero's fusion of art and science explores the profound impact of magic on perception, applying its principles to life's multifaceted aspects.

Laurent Piron (Belgium) performing Grand Gala show and a lecture
He never stops experimenting illusions and researching new effects, for instance leading him to animate objects magically in his visual act "Paper Ball", with which he won the World Champion of Magic prize and Grand Prix FISM in Quebec in 2022.

Jeki Yoo (South Korea) performing Close-up Gala
After winning Asia's greatest magic contest, The Busan International Magic Festival, in 2006 as a high school student, Jeki began winning international contests like a comet. His magic was innovative, inspired other magicians, and roused applause from audiences around the globe with its fresh originality.

Francesco Della Bona (Italy) performing Grand Gala Show
He is a young Italian illusionist. In recent years, he has focused on studying manipulation, one of the most challenging categories of illusionism, culminating in his achievement of the 3rd prize at the World Magic Championships (FISM Quebec 2022). This accomplishment marks him as the first Italian, after nearly 50 years since 1973, to once again win a world prize in the manipulation category.

Ding Yang (China) performing Grand Gala show
she has participated in many magic competitions, including "IBM" The international brotherhood of magic Competition winning the gold, and the Golden Chrysanthemum Award, the highest magic competition in China. At same time she won the Canadian Magic Association international Rising Star Award and Mandrakes Awards in Paris in 2023.

Zhu Mingzhu (China) performing Grand Gala show
China National first-class actor, director of Asian International Magic Alliance AMA. China Acrobatic highest prize Chrysanthemum Award (Magic Program Award) The 15th Asian International Magic (AMA) Stage Gold Medal The 28th World Magic (FISM) competition stage general category third place and stage magic invention Award.
His Paper Plane act creative inspiration comes from a dream of flying.

Zhang Wenju & Wang Meiqi (China) performing Grand Gala show
The duo made its debut on the CCTV Spring Festival Gala in 2014 and swiftly earned the Most Popular Program Award that year. In 2015, the troupe received the prestigious Presidential Bonus Award from the French Republic. From 2018 to 2019, "Dream Butterfly" became a global sensation, participating in events such as the 18th Jakarta Asian Games closing ceremony, "Hangzhou Time" cultural performances, Sino-Japanese economic exchange New Year's party, CCTV7 Military New Year's Gala, China-France diplomatic relations' 55th anniversary, and the 2019 French TV Spring Festival Gala.

Paco Agrado (Spain) performing close-up and a lecture.
He is one of the new Spanish magicians. Winner of the FISM Latin America Grand Prix, he has won numerous national and international awards.

Raul Cremona (Italy) is both a close-up and stage magician as well as a famous Italian TV star. He concurred at FISM in Lausanne.

Dani DaOrtiz (Spain) performing Close-up Gala, a special FISM lecture and holding a workshop. He was made famous by his unique approach to magic, his use of humor and mental manipulation making him one of the greats of the century.

Francesco Fontanelli (Italy). In 2021 he won the First Prize at the FISM, the "European Championship of Magic", in the category "Card Magic".
Member of "La Corte dei Miracoli" in Livorno, the only stable theatre dedicated to the art of magic in Italy, where he collaborates with the best illusionists on the international scene.

Miguel Angel Gea performing close-up, a special FISM lecture and a workshop. Professional artist based in Madrid, known internationally for his contributions in close-up magic with both cards and coins. He has a special interest in the relationship between magic and neurosciences. He is the author of several technical books on magic, especially the one he published in 2018, Numismagia y Percepción.

Giancarlo Scalia (Spain - Italy) performing close up and a lecture. Born in Italy but now living in Spain, Giancarlo's magic combines Italian elegance with Spanish construction to produce effects that are as beautiful as they are impossible. Giancarlo Scalia is part of the Spanish school of magic. An elite group of magicians that push the envelope of magic further.

Bernardo Sedlacek (Brazil) performing close up, lecture and workshop. Filled with that profound knowledge, he has lectured about psychology, theories, and philosophy in magic for magicians in over 20 countries.

Some of these names will be familiar to you while others will be new. The variety is always pleasing. It's always a pleasure to see some familiar faces as well as great magic you have yet to experience. As you can see, FISM-Europe has managed to fulfill this requirement in an expert fashion.

More artists will be announced soon in the next article.

4. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article #145
-------------------------------------
Message by Paul Stone (US)

2024 is something of a landmark year for me. For a start, I celebrate 50 years as a Show Producer, and then there's the small matter of a not insignificant Birthday.

As those of us for whom our 21st Birthday is way, way back in the rear view mirror will attest, tempus really does fugit!

One of the traits that is particularly associated with being on this planet for several decades is the tendency to increasingly talk about the 'good old days'.

This is no different in the world of magic. I, and doubtless many others of a similar age, compare performers that we've grown up with and admired, to those who are the headliners today.

We invariably tend to take the view that the stars of today don't match up to those of the past. But is that fair, and even accurate?

Certainly, as a show producer, there simply aren't the same number of quality magic acts out there that I can book for my Gala Shows and Corporate events.

One of my all-time favourite acts were The Morettis and I booked them on numerous occasions. Hans & Helga were two of the greatest pros that I ever worked with.

There are a few exceptions, and Jeff Hobson and Kevin James are a couple of names that instantly come to mind.

Of course, it's all a matter of opinion, and without doubt times have changed. TV talent shows and online performances have created huge stars. Probably the main difference is that there are fewer and fewer venues to play with so many theatres closing due to dwindling audiences.

This inevitably results in less opportunities for stage performers, which is a great shame.

I have always loved the experience of a theatre show, especially with a 'live' orchestra. Call me a dinosaur if you like, but I'm proud to be 'old school'!

I'm writing this in Liverpool, where I'm hosting Mac King and Jennifer, along with Mike Caveney and Tina Lennart.

They've travelled here from USA via London to enjoy the 'Paul Stone Beatles Tour'! This has become an annual event, previously enjoyed by Lance Burton, Bill Smith, Fielding West, Kevin & Claudia James, and Lynette Chappell.

After experiencing the 'Fab Four' and all that the fantastic city of Liverpool has to offer, we'll be journeying on to Blackpool for the world's largest magic convention. It promises to be another amazing few days.

5. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article #146

Message by Paul Stone (US)

The Blackpool Magic Convention is now firmly in the rear mirror, and much has been written about it. It never ceases to amaze me how year after year this convention attracts over 4,000 magicians from all corners of the globe to this cold and windy town on the north west coast of England.

That it does, is primarily down to the extraordinary efforts of members of Blackpool Magicians Club, led by the Convention organisers Russ Stevens, Russ Brown and Guy Barratt. It is no mean feat to pull this off, but they do so in spectacular style.

There have been numerous reports on the various Convention shows, lectures and workshops, and so I don't propose to write another one here. Instead, I'd like to focus on two of the headliners, both from USA, at the opposite ends of their performing careers and who, in my opinion were the standout performers in this year's convention.

Mac King is a 'jewel in the magical crown'. He is a consummate performer and entertainer whose talent and experience are unmatched in the world of magic today. Headlining his own show on the Strip in Las Vegas for 23 years, which I understand is about to be extended for a further three years at the Excalibur Hotel & Casino, Mac has established himself as the number one comedy magician on the planet.

And yet, even with his vast experience, Mac was extremely nervous about performing his one man show in the Opera House Theatre in Blackpool's Winter Gardens complex. Why, you may ask? The reason is very simple, it's one thing performing a 20 minute spot in a Gala Show with a piece of rope, a deck of cards, and a cloak of invisibility, it's quite another to bring your whole show, complete with props and illusions halfway round the world for just two performances.

In Las Vegas, performing day after day, week after week, month after month, Mac knows his working area intimately, and the only variable is the audience. In Blackpool he was not only faced with a massive stage, but also one that was raked, which presents its own challenges, especially for a one night show!

But, Mac needn't have worried, of course, as he took it all in his stride and 'killed'. The audience loved him and he deservedly received a long and rousing standing ovation.

I was responsible for recommending the other performer, Mat O'Neill, who hails from Los Angeles. at 22 years of age and blessed with ridiculously good looks, I think it is fair to say that Mat made an amazing impression on this, his first ever visit to UK.

I first saw Mat perform several months ago in the Close-Up Room at the Magic Castle in Hollywood. His magic was strong, but what immediately stood out for me was his warmth, and likability. As a show producer, I am always on the lookout for someone who possesses that 'it' factor, and Mat has it in spades.

His USP - unique selling point - is his ability to remember the names of his entire audience. When I saw him in the Magic Castle, he began his show by introducing himself to all the 30 people in his audience, asking their names and then proceeded during his show to address them individually, culminating at the end of his show by thanking every single person by name.

If that isn't impressive enough, Mat's 'piece de resistance', was showcased first at 'Magic Live' in Las Vegas and then again, even more impressively in Blackpool, when he mingled amongst the audience as they took their seats for the Gala Show and once again informally introduced himself to people and asked their names.

As the show started, Mat walked on stage and asked everyone he introduced himself to, to stand up, and as he named them, to take their seats. He did this with over 100 names, all remembered in the fifteen minutes as he mingled during the pre-show. Unsurprisingly, he received a huge response from the audience. It is an incredible demonstration, and defies logic!

Mat also performed his own one man Mentalism show successfully on three occasions at the Convention, again to great acclaim.

I predict that Mat O'Neill is a name you will definitely hear a lot more about!

6. Why Should I Register For MAGIC Live?
-------------------------------------
Message by Stan Allen (US)

It's a fair question, and one that I get asked regularly. My guess is that if you asked all of our 1,600 attendees, you'd probably get 1,600 different answers. Maybe more, as I'm sure most people have more than one reason. I know I do. Here are two of them:

Community
There are 1,599 friends waiting for you. Some are old friends and others are yet-to-be friends. MAGIC Live is carefully structured to nurture these friendships, with opening and closing parties, two-hour breaks for lunch and dinner, and an open-24-hour lounge.

Content
While "Community" is formed by those attending, "Content" is generated by the performers, the presenters, the vendors, and the entire MAGIC Live team. And while we are lucky enough to attract amazing people - the "Who," if you will - that's only the beginning. What sets MAGIC Live apart is "What" we have them do for us and "How" we present everything with state-of-the-art audio/visual and custom-built venues.

If you've been with us before, then you know how MAGIC Live is a combination of this amazing Content and even more amazing Community.

If you have not, I encourage you to spend a few minutes on the MAGIC Live website. There you'll find FAQs, plus dozens of photos, explanations of our shows and tutorial sessions, and even a few videos of our unique talks.

Registration is $480, and you can either pay in full or join our convenient monthly payment plan. Should you have a change in your plans, a 90% refund is available through June 3, 2024. The Orleans Hotel room rate during the convention is just $52 per night. Even with hotel tax and that pesky resort fee, MAGIC Live is still one of the convention deals for 2024.

Please consider joining us in August. Friends and surprises await!

8. The Magic Word Podcast - Murray Sawchuck And Justin Flom
-------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

What have we been up to for the past few weeks? Well…first of all, if you missed any of the three part series on "magic exposure" then you'll want to begin at the beginning. The first two episodes featured Murray Sawchuck then Justin Flom who were unapologetically pronouncing why they intentionally expose magic. Well, they actually "danced" around the real reason which is "money" but never directly admitted to it. The third episode was with three notable and respected magicians who believe that our magic secrets should be protected and they tell us why we should adhere to the "magician's code" of secrecy.

My intent for posting this series was not to give Murray and Justin a platform to further their views, but rather so the rest of the magic community could be aware that 1) there is a controversy that needed to be addressed, 2) these are the principle players and what they thought, and 3) ask the magic community to think about how they want to handle it.

You can listen to these episodes wherever you get your podcasts, or you can follow these links:
814: Murray Sawchuck - Magic Exposure https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/814-murray-on-magic-exposure
815: Justin Flom - Justified? https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/815-justin-flom
816: David Sandy, Bill Smith and Mark Holstein - Protecting Secrets https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/816-protecting-secrets

Then last weekend we were off to Blackpool for the world's largest magic convention that hosted nearly 5,000 magicians! Of course that meant daily convention reports so you could get the sounds and feel of the convention even if you weren't there. We spoke with nearly 35 magicians in these reports and after editing and posting the reports (using very sketchy Wi-Fi) I only got about three to four hours sleep each night. I hope you appreciate and enjoy these reports.
816: Day One Report from Blackpool Magic Convention https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/817-blackpool-2024-day-one
817: Day Two Report from Blackpool Magic Convention https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/818-blackpool-2024-day-two
818: Day Three Report from Blackpool Magic Convention https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/819-blackpool-2024-day-three

With all of these episodes going out, I felt that it is a lot for listeners to digest. So, there was no podcast dropped this week in order to give time to everyone to catch up while I catch my breath and catch some sleep. See you next week with an episode featuring Ken Weber. Oops, I wasn't supposed to say that. You need to subscribe to the Pod letter to get scoops on upcoming episodes.

9. Bernard Reid's New Zealand History Books Return!
-------------------------------------
Message by Kent Blackmore (Australia)

I would like to announce that, with the active cooperation of Bernard Reid's executor, I have been given access to his print-on-demand account, and I'm currently working to progressively make most of Bernard's history books available for sale directly from Lulu. Keep an eye out!
Previously, Bernard would place orders himself, after receiving an enquiry from a buyer.

This is a great step forward as the books have been unobtainable following Bernard's passing in 2021, and helps to ensure that his writing becomes more widely owned by magicians around the world. As I bring the books online (which will take me a little time yet) the pricing will be very favourable to you; and any small profits made will be donated to the charitable projects operated by VarietyNZ the children's charity. Full copyright in all publications remains with Bernard's estate.

Bernard's first book, "Conjurors, Cardsharps and Conmen" was published in an edition of 200 copies by Mary Egan Publishing; it will not become available. However, these books will become available:

- Darling Jennie - facsimile of 1991 edition - by James V. Reilly

- Magicians in the Golden Age of New Zealand Vaudeville - Volumes One, Two and Three, each volume in both paperback and hardcover.

- Magicians Just After the Golden Age of New Zealand Vaudeville ("Finale") in paperback and hardcover.

- Jon Zealando - A Magical Legend - paperback only.

My interest is solely to see that Bernard's writing is preserved, and my role is simply to manage the Lulu setup. Since the original, professionally designed, source files are being used, the quality should be up to the standard of Bernard's original printings; but I will run a test copy of each before opening up the store for sale. I commend these books to you and suggest that you don't miss the opportunity to purchase them while they are still available!

"Darling Jennie" is already available for purchase - search on lulu.com
regards, Kent Blackmore (https://sydneymagic.net)

Message by Wittus Witt (Germany)

As you know, I am preparing a large exhibition on the subject of magic in women's hands. The work is progressing very well. The catalog book will have over 200 large-format pages with many biographies and interviews of and with female magicians.

It has become apparent that it was mainly three women in the past who made a name for themselves in the art of magic and who can be described as "pioneers".

Firstly, there is the first European female magician Benita Anguinet from Belgium, who performed full-evening shows around 1840. The second, of course, is Adelaide Herrmann, who also performed major shows in the USA and Europe in the 19th century, and the third pioneer is Gloria Dea, who was the first female magician to perform on stage in Las Vegas - before any of her male colleagues.

All in all, an exciting story in which all three ladies must be given their place. We should not forget them and honor them just as we do many men.

To launch the exhibition, I will also be organizing a large evening event in a theater in Hamburg. I have managed to engage the great US magician Belinda Sinclair. Belinda and I have known each other for around 20 years. She is not only a gorgeous artist, but also a wonderful person. I was also able to secure the well-known German magician Michelle Spillner and the Hamburg artist Alana. The program will be hosted by Stefn Alexander Rautenberg.
All in all, a magical event. The date is May 1, 2024.

That's all for now.

The Magic of Libraries

I was born in Del Rio, Texas, a small town near the Mexican border, and it was in my home town that my dad gave me my first A.C. Gilbert Mysto Magic set that changed my life forever. It was 1949, and I was six years old, going on seven.

When I opened that magic set, I said, "I'm going to be a magician!" And now, 75 years later, I have been a full-time professional magician for nearly forty years.

But there were no magic stores in Del Rio, no magic clubs, no vaudeville theaters. There was no internet, and no television station. How was I going to learn more magic?

The magic word was "LIBRARY!"

Even the Del Rio Public library had a few magic books in the children's section, although I couldn't find them by looking up "magic" in the card catalog (remember those?). Looking up "magic" took me to books on the occult, witchcraft, and demons. That was not what I was looking for!

The friendly librarian showed me that we needed to look up "conjuring," the British word that meant magic as a performing art. The Dewey Decimal number was 793.8.

My favorite magic books from the library were by Joseph Leeming. During the past few years, I have found copies of those books in flea markets, and they are now among the most prized magic books in my personal library.

There are now thousands of magic books in my library here at the Fantastic Magic Center.
There were even two magic books in my 4th grade classroom library. Next week, I will tell you about Mysto's Conjuring Crime!

The Fantastic Magic Center is dedicated to preserving and sharing the art of magic. But I can't do it without your help. My Patreon account is the same place as my free weekly podcast:

12. Drawing Closer - John Carey #224
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)

Here's a nice piece of Mentalism I'm having fun with. Twenty years ago if you'd have asked me if I would perform an effect with a calculator, the answer would have been no. Another thing to carry etc etc. But in this day and age with smartphones everywhere - no such problem. We are going to use the venerable 1089 force, well part of it, to drive the method engine here with a simple but strong drawing duplication.

On a piece of card make a list of 20 random objects/designs that can be drawn easily. The object at 18 is a boat. The rest are truly random. Bring out the card and set it face-down onto the table. "Sam, numbers are truly everywhere. There's lottery numbers, phone numbers, registration numbers and so on. Please open your phone and go to your calculator.

Imagine four different single digits morphing onto the screen in front of you. Can you visualize them? Type them in please. Now I want you to flip them on their head. Press the minus key and type those same numbers in reverse and then press equals please. So now you're thinking of numbers that even you didn't know you'd be thinking about two minutes ago.

Finally, in your mind only, just add up all four digits to form a one or two digit number. Then turn your phone off."

Naturally, this forces 18 on our participant. Ask them to pick up the card on the table and look at it. Comment on how there's a list of different objects and designs on it. Ask them to lock the thought of the object at their secret number into their mind. Take out a business card and a
pen and have them hold your wrist. Now it's simply a matter of getting psychic vibrations and gradually drawing a boat to bring the effect home, duplicating their thought.
