4. Hotels available For FISM-Europe

Message by Joan Caesar (Canada)
2024
will be an exciting year with continental FISMs being held
in 4 continents. The one offering competition level performances
from the most countries is FISM-Europe. St. Vincent, in
the northern part of Italy is not only in a beautiful area,
but is close to many countries making it very accessible.
It
is time to book your hotel, if you haven't already done
this. I've researched the distance from several hotels to
the 2 venues, and looked at approximate prices. It looks
like several are already full, but it would be a good idea
to phone them directly. It is important to books to do this
very soon in order to get the type of accommodation you
want.
The
distance between the 2 venues is 1.2 kilometers, about a
15-minute walk. Many hotels are situated between the 2 buildings
so both distances are calculated below.
5-Star

The Grand Hotel Billia is situated across the street from
the Grand Billia venue and 1.2 km from the Palais St. Vincent

were full for the FISM dates, however, if you e-mail them

5. Tales From The Road Featured On The Magic Word Podcast

Message by Scott Wells MIMC
We
have all experienced problems with our magic shows. Whether
getting to or from the show, or problems at the show with
our equipment failing or a heckler, or something. This week
on The Magic Word Podcast, several magicians share their
experiences and horror stories. Some are funny, others where
you'll say "wow" and others that you'll say "ouch".
These stories were recorded at last Fall's convention in
Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, "Magic At The Beach".
You
can hear this episode wherever you get your podcasts. But
for more information, please visit the website at:
https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/809-tales-from-the-road
And
you can further help us if you will please leave a five
star review and complimentary comments on iTunes or whatever
platform you use to listen to these podcasts. It will be
a massive favor to me. Thank you.

6. Rolando Santos On The Magic Word Podcast
-------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells MIMC
This
week on the Magic Word Podcast, Rolando Santos, Retired
CEO - CNN Chile, Emmy award-winning journalist, and Past
International President of the I.B.M., has a lot to share
with us. He knows how to deliver a news story and evoke
emotions rather than "provoke" emotions. This
has a direct carry over to our magic presentations and Rolando
tells us how to use these emotions to connect with our audience.
The suggestions and advice he gives us for free in this
week's episode is usually paid for by higher learning institutions
and corporations. I know you'll get a lot out of it.
You
can listen to this week's episode wherever you get your
podcasts. But for more information, be sure to visit the
website at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/810-rolando-santos
And don't forget to subscribe to our podletter in order
to keep up with each week's episodes plus get suggestions
from the archives. Next week we will be presenting daily
updates from the Magifest in Columbus, Ohio.
This
week we welcome Thomas Haskamp as the newest Friend of the
Magic Word. Thank you, Thomas, for your donation via PayPal
to the Magic Word Podcast and helping keep this going. And
in that regard, we will soon be receiving a significant
recognition. It is now public information that I can share.
I was recently notified that I will receive a Special Fellowship
from the Academy of Magical Arts (AMA) for my work with
the Podcast. Chuck Martinez, Executive Director of the AMA,
recently wrote to say, "We're very excited the AMA
Board of Trustees has chosen to recognize your exceptional
contributions to the world of magic by awarding you a Special
Fellowship, which will be presented to you on Friday evening,
May 17th, 2024 at our AMA Awards Show in Los Angeles."
I
can only be presented with this award because of my guests
and my listeners, like you, who have supported me through
the years and kept this Podcast going with your financial
commitment and encouragement through the years. Thank you
everyone.

7. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article #141
-------------------------------------
Message by Paul Stone (US)
I
was chatting with a few magic friends over the holidays
and the subject of on stage disasters came up. I'm sure
we've all had them happen to us at one time or another.
For
me, there were two such occasions that came to mind. One
occurred during one of my very first shows. It was actually
a charity gala show in Liverpool, at a venue called the
Shakespeare Theatre Club. The building was originally the
Shakespeare Theatre but had been turned into an 800 seater
dinner cabaret club, and all the major show business stars
played it.
I
was one of around ten performers on the bill which was topped
by Australian singing star Frank Ifield, and another chart
topper at the time Labi Siffre, and a local comedian, who
was also a school teacher, called Tom O'Connor, who became
a big star in England. Remember it was 50 years ago!!
One
of the exciting features of this club, mainly used for the
top of the bill acts, was a stage which could be loaded
down in the basement and brought up into view, normally
surrounded by lots of smoke.
I
had bought a dolls house illusion, and found an assistant
in a local dance school to help. When it was our time to
go on, we were in the basement, I loaded the girl into the
illusion and, as we were announced, the stage started to
move upwards.
It
wasn't a smooth movement, and suddenly I heard cries from
the girl inside the dolls house. 'I think I'm going throw
up'!
Somehow,
I managed to alert the stage manager, and the stage shuddered
to an abrupt halt, before once again travelling back down
to the basement! I unloaded my rather shaken up assistant,
and then rose up on the stage on my own, minus the dolls
house!
It was an extremely embarrassing situation, but was unfortunately
only to get worse!
One
of the other effects I was performing was the billet knife,
and before the show I had given a sealed prediction envelope
to a member of the audience to hold on to until the show,
when I would invite him onto the stage for the reveal.
I
introduced the effect but when I asked the audience member
to join me on stage, there was no sign of him. As I mentioned,
this was a large theatre and the man could have been anywhere,
As it turned out, he had gone to the toilet, and had completely
forgotten he had the envelope!
Let's
just say, the whole experience was character building!
A
couple of years later, when I was by then a pro, and had
learnt the ropes, I was performing for a week in another
cabaret club called the 'Talk of the North' in Eccles, near
Manchester. The top of the bill was a very well-known and
popular comedian and TV Star named Dave Allen.
It
was Saturday night and the club was packed. Everyone in
the show had done well all week including me, and I was
having fun. One of my featured tricks was with a borrowed
wrist watch - this was well before the times of cell phone,
when people did wear watches!
I
borrowed a watch and had a spectator smash it with a brick,
or that was how it appeared, before it was to reappear inside
a box, inside a box etc. The routine required me to switch
the watch, but I was going so well that night, and the adrenalin
was pumping, and I got over excited, and switched the watch
twice!
The
result was that the spectator ended up actually smashing
the borrowed watch into pieces! I can't remember exactly
how I got out of it, I believe there was a lot of stage
whispering going on. What I do know is that it cost me my
whole week's wages to replace the watch! It was an expensive
lesson to learn!

9. Magic Museum Bellachini - Episode 61
---------------------------------------------
Message by Wittus Witt (Germany)
Where
are the women who do magic?
Today
I would like to introduce you all to a new project that
I will be realizing at Museum Bellachini this May.
There
will be a special exhibition on the subject of "Magic
in the hands of women".
At
the Bellachini Museum, I am always asked whether there are
any female magicians. Let's be honest: women hardly ever
appear in the public perception of the art of magic.
At least this is the case in Germany and probably also in
Europe.
When
people talk about famous magicians, they are sure to mention
names like David Copperfield, Harry Houdini and Siegfried
& Roy.
Hand
on heart: if you had to name a famous magician, what name
would come to mind? And I mean a name that is known everywhere?
Of
course we, the magicians ourselves, know many women who
perform magic: Belinca Sinclair, Judy Carter, Melinda, Princess
Tenko, Fay Presto
But are these ladies also well
known to the public? I don't think so or do prove me wrong!
So in May I will be putting together an exhibition dedicated
to women in the art of magic. I would appreciate any help.
I
have already collected around 600 names of female magicians.
Charles Green and Conny Boyd have already been a great help
to me.
Of
course, I am looking for a lot of "paper material"
for the exhibition, brochures and posters in the first place.
Who can help?
Please
contact me directly: abc@wittuswitt.de
For
women who are reading this and who are intensively involved
in the art of magic, I have put a questionnaire online,
which you can download here and fill out easily:
https://www.umfrageonline.com/c/k37i9d3b
If
you know a lady magician who is not reading this please
forward the link to her, please!
I
don't think there has ever been a similar public exhibition
in the art of magic.
Thank
you for your interest

10. Tales From The Fantastic Magic Center - #73
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kent Cummins, Director (US)
Happy
New Year!
2024
is my 75th year as a magician, full time since 1986. I hope
to celebrate by continuing my writing, continuing to perform
about 50 shows a year, and finally producing my one-man
show, "Sometimes, it Takes a Magician!"
In
2019, I celebrated my 70th year as a magician by performing
three public shows at the historic Scottish Rite Theatre
in Austin, Texas. It was also the year that I signed the
purchase agreement for the Fantastic Magic Center in Georgetown.
But it was also the last year before the Covid 19 Pandemic
shut down almost all performing.
We
are hopeful that the performing pandemic is behind us, and
that the new year will offer many opportunities for performing,
live and in person.
I'm
not a great fan of predictions or new year's resolutions,
but each new year is a great time to reflect on our goals
for the coming year. It has been proven that those who set
written goals achieve more than those who don't.
The
Genie may grant you three wishes, but it is up to you to
accomplish their completion.
What do you want to accomplish with your love of magic?
Do you want to become a full-time professional magician?
Or would you rather be a part-time pro, as Gene Anderson
describes. Or maybe you just love magic as a hobby.
January
will be my 100th issue of "Marketing Magic" in
"The Linking Ring" magazine. This year I will
also submit my 100th episode right here in Alan Watson's
wonderful weekly digital magazine. And I expect to record
and publish the 100th episode of my weekly podcast.
Happy
New Year!!
The
Fantastic Magic Center is dedicated to preserving and sharing
the art of magic. But I can't do it without your help. My
Patreon account is the same place as my free weekly podcast:

11. Always On My Mind - John Carey #222
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
http://www.johncareymagic.co.uk/
This
effect came about simply from the deck I like using these
days, the Penguin Magic marked deck. It comes with a double
backed gaffed card and I thought that I might as well use
this gaff. Here is a strong and simple mystery card presentation.
Place
the double backer inside your right pocket ahead of time.
Perform a few effects and then hand the deck out for shuffling.
"Before I came here today I removed a card from that
deck. I don't even know what it is. It's a mystery card."
The
right hand removes the double backer and sticks it to your
forehead, which will get a smile or inquisitive stare. Take
back the deck and spread for a free selection, which the
marks will tell you the identity of. Let's say here it's
the Seven of Diamonds. Hand a marker to your helper
and request that they sign their card on the face as you
look away. Turn back around and have the card returned and
secretly control it to the top using your favorite method.
Secure a pinky break beneath the signed card.
"Now
let's try something that some call telepathy, others call
mind reading and some people state simply cannot be done.
Mentally project your card to me and keep saying it over
and over in your head, like Seven of Diamonds, Seven of
Diamonds, Seven of Diamonds, yes?!"
Let
your helper respond and confirm you're correct. "It's
as if your thoughts were always on my mind!" The right
hand removes the double backer from your forehead and places
it on top of the deck. As an in transit action extend your
right hand palm-up and ask your spectator to
extend
a palm-up hand. Come back to the deck and execute a double
turnover revealing their signed card. Hand it to them and
your mystery is successfully concluded. Put the deck away
and go to the bar for a well-deserved beer...
