3. Spy Craft On The Magic Word Podcast

Message by Scott Wells MIMC*
That
could have gone in a completely different direction and
oftentimes it does in the world of spy craft. This week
we chat with the former Acting Director of the Central Intelligence
Agency (C.I.A.), John McLaughlin. There are a lot of similarities
related to keeping secrets whether as a spy or as a magician
all of which are discussed this week. We also talk about
a few declassified operations including "the Mincemeat
Project" and "the War Magician" among others.
John is also part of the Washington, D.C. group of magicians
who regularly performs in the area and is also discussed
this week.

5. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article #136
-------------------------------------
Message by Paul Stone (US)
Whilst
in the process of gathering together material for a book
that I am writing, and which will undoubtedly take me another
year to complete, I've come to the realisation that I have
kept hundreds of photographs, fliers, and posters from most
of the shows and events that I have either produced, emceed
or performed in, over the last 50 years.
I
am definitely not a magic collector, but over the many years
that I have been involved in magic, and having either booked
or worked with most of the top magicians in the world, I've
accumulated some very collectible magic memorabilia.
All
these items are one-offs and unique, and will not appear
in the regular magic auctions. These include items from
Fred Kaps, Siegfried & Roy, Lance Burton, Peter Reveen,
Johnny Thompson, Norm Nielsen, and Maurice Fogel, to name
a few.
There
are also a number of signed books, all in pristine condition,
from magic luminaries like Harry Lorayne, Juan Tamariz,
Bill Larsen, Jack Kodell, Marvyn Roy, and several others.
Time
marches on, and as I'm planning on travelling a lot more
in the coming year, I've decided that these items need new
homes! So, if you are a collector, or know any serious collectors
who would like more details, my contact email is paulstonespeaks@gmail.com
With
Christmas just around the corner, these would make great
gifts for that special someone in your life!
Last
week, I mentioned my two sons Danny and Ben, who have followed
my two real passions in life, Variety entertainment and
Football (Soccer!) and both of whom have made successful
careers in them.
Danny
signed his first professional contract at the age of 15
with Blackburn Rovers FC, who were in the English Premier
League at that time, He then moved to Notts County FC in
Nottingham, where he played for a number of years.
He
then crossed the Atlantic to Las Vegas to coach Youth Soccer,
before moving into coaching Professional men's teams in
Denver, Oklahoma City and more recently Phoenix.
Over
the years, I always strived to watch Danny play as often
as possible, and I've enjoyed many exciting moments as his
career developed. But none more so than a couple of weeks
ago in Charlotte, South Carolina!
The
team that Danny currently coaches, Phoenix Rising FC, play
in the United Soccer League. There are 20 teams in the Western
Conference and 20 teams in the Eastern Conference.
At
the end of each season, the top 8 teams in each Conference
go into Playoff matches to determine an overall winner,
with the top 4 teams having home field advantage.
Phoenix
Rising FC finished in 6th position, so had to play the 4th
placed team San Diego, in San Diego. Phoenix Rising won
that game in overtime. They then qualified to play 2nd placed
Orange County, in Orange County
and beat them in
overtime.
That
left them to play the Number 1 team, Sacramento, in Sacramento
in front of 15,000 hostile fans
and they beat them
with a winning goal in the last five minutes, to become
Western Champions.
So,
they now had to play the winners of the Eastern Conference,
Charlotte, in Charlotte, South Carolina, for the National
USL title, this being the fourth consecutive week Phoenix
Rising had been on the road!
After
being behind by one goal, Phoenix Rising equalised in the
final minute, taking them into extra time. Extra time finished
all square, so the match had to be decided by 5 penalty
kicks each.
Phoenix
Rising missed their first two penalty kicks, and Charlotte
scored both of their penalty kicks. Phoenix scored their
next two kicks and Charlotte missed both theirs!
It
all came down to the last penalty kick. And yes, you guessed
it
Phoenix Rising Scored their kick, and Charlotte
missed their penalty kick. So, Phoenix Rising became the
USL National Champions!
It
was an unbelievable night and achieved completely against
all the odds. Now that is what I call real MAGIC!

6. Colley Index
-------------------------------------
Message by Michael Colley (UK)
I'm
pleased to announce that, just in time for Christmas, I
have completed the "Colley Index" to the New Pentagram,
Edited by Peter Warlock from 1969 to 1989.
There are 2134 article entries, with up to 9 categories
per entry (there are 520 categories), 5853 name entries
and 320 photo and picture entries. The price is £25.
This is an addition to the Colley Series of Indices, which
also includes ABRAcadabra, Club71/The Magician, Demon Telegraph*,
The Gen*, Goodliffe's Magic Monthly, The Jinx, Magic Magazine*
(Max Andrews), Magigram*, Magic Wand (Photos only), Mind
& Magic (Ted Lesley), The Pentagram (also edited by
Peter Warlock), Stanyon's "Magic" and The Wizard.
There is also an index to 14013 photographs in the first
100 volumes of the Magic Circular.
All can be searched by Author, Title and Categories. Output
can be as Datasheet or as .pdf report.
The New Pentagram Index, like the previous ones, is an Access
database, but the information can be provided as Excel spreadsheets,
as .pdf files or as .csv for importation into other databases.
The indices marked with * also have indices of the Advertisements
in the magazines.
Full details of all Indices can be obtained from the compiler,
Dr. Michael Colley at cmcolley@themagiccircle.co.uk
P.S. All the above indices have also been combined into
a Compendium Index which can be searched as a whole database
or as separate magazines.

7. Magic Museum Bellachini - Episode 58
---------------------------------------------
Message by Wittus Witt (Germany)
Today
I received the first copy of the latest issue of my magazine
from my printer: Magische Welt, issue 6, 2023.
It
is packed full of stories about the art of magic. I am particularly
pleased to be able to introduce another magical woman: Marine
Feral. A young French woman who is very active on Instagram.
She shows her tricks with a lot of charm and esprit. She's
easy to find on Instagram. She comes from France and is
a tax consultant by profession. I was able to conduct an
interesting interview with her.
My
good friend Richard Hatch from the USA is also featured
in this issue. He visited my museum a few weeks ago and
gave a very remarkable lecture on the magician Günther
Dammann.
The
Magic Circle in the city of Dresden celebrated its 100th
birthday and Alexandra Duvivier (also from France) gives
answers to questions that nobody has ever asked her. Very
funny.
The "Theory and Practice" section is all about
spectators. Carsten Hoffmann poses the question: Is there
such a thing as a bad audience? I think this makes for a
very interesting discussion. How often have we said after
a performance: But they weren't in such a good mood today!
Is that really down to the audience or perhaps to a large
extent to the performer himself?
Carsten
sheds light on many aspects of performances: The location,
the atmosphere, the composition, the timing and many other
points.
Incidentally,
James Hagy from the USA also thinks very similarly. I have
the honour of gradually publishing his equally interesting
publication "Secrets magicians COULD tell" in
my magazine.
In
my opinion, far too little thought is often given to the
framework conditions of a performance. Many problems can
be solved in advance or discussed with the organiser.
The
supplement describing magic tricks was once again designed
by the Berlin magician Fabian Weiss. He shows many original
ideas.
All
in all, a very exciting international issue to round off
the 72nd year of Magische Welt magazine.
Here
is a brief introduction to the magazine:
https://youtu.be/eexn_yaau-4
See
you next week.
PS:
Last week I welcomed visitor number 1,600 to my museum
what a joy!

Message by Kent Cummins, Director (US)
I
love Puppets!
My
mom, Mary Lou Cummins, made me my first two hand puppets
for Christmas in 1949, when I was six years old (but soon
to be seven!). It was the same year that my dad gave me
my first magic set, the A.C. Gilbert Mysto Magic Exhibition
Set.
My
dad also helped me build a puppet theatre out of a large
wooden shipping crate, and I put on simple puppet shows
with the Santa and Rudolph hand puppets that Mom had made
from McCall's patterns. (Dad worked for the Singer Sewing
Machine Company, so Mom had lots of sewing stuff.)
I
continued collecting puppets throughout my childhood, and
in the sixth grade Dad let me turn the garage into an amazing
puppet theatre, with stages for both hand puppets and marionettes.
I remember telling Mom that I was not sure whether I wanted
to be a magician or a puppeteer. For the time, I was both.
Then
Dad got promoted, and we moved to Baton Rouge. I packed
up my puppets and never saw them again. The theatre couldn't
be moved, and the puppets were apparently lost by the movers.
I was crushed!
I
did write a puppet show on nutrition while at Baton Rouge
Junior High School, which resulted in my very first letter
of appreciation in 1956. But I never accumulated another
large collection of puppets.
When
I started college at LSU, Mom joined the Puppeteers of America
and started performing as well as making puppets.
When
I started Fantastic Magic Camp in 1993 at the age of fifty,
I hired Mom to be the first puppetry instructor.
I
still love puppets!
The
Fantastic Magic Center is dedicated to preserving and sharing
the art of magic. But I can't do it without your help. My
Patreon account is the same place as my free weekly podcast:

9. CAANY! - John Carey #218
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
http://www.johncareymagic.co.uk/
Earlier
in this volume we explored the 9's force. Let's revisit
it one last time with this subtle and deceptive little piece.
Preset the Joker at 17th from the top of the deck. False
shuffle and then turn the deck face-up. Start spreading
the cards and ask a spectator to name any card they see?
You want to make the spreading rather methodical, so that
they name a card in the lower half of the deck. Let's say
they name the Ten of Clubs.
As
soon as they name their card, Hofzinser cull it under the
spread and continue spreading until you arrive at the Joker.
Load the culled card next to this card and square up. Their
freely named card is now 18th from the top. Flip the deck
face-down and hand it to your helper. Walk and talk your
spectator through the Jay Ose triple false table cut, them
cutting off around a third and tabling this packet. Then
ask them to cut off another packet and tabling that to the
right of the first packet and then place the remaining packet
down furthest to the right of the row. A moment later have
them gather up the packets from left to right. Now for the
scripting and range and number force.
"They
say that between the ages from 20 to 30 is where the majority
of people find stability in their life, both in a personal
capacity and professionally. I'd like you to think back
to one of those years Mick? Got one? Great. Now let's play
a little mind game. Picture that age in the form
of its two digits in front of you. Now let's randomize things.
Add those two digits together to get a small number. Now,
just for fun subtract that small number from your original
number, to form a number purely in your mind that not a
soul in the world could possibly know. From this moment
on just focus purely on that number."
Just
for completion, let's say they originally thought of 24.
Added together those two digits equal 6. When subtracted
the total will be 18. It always will be in this context.
All that's left to do is to remind the audience that your
spectator named any card and is merely thinking of a number.
Have your helper reveal her thought of number to be 18.
Have her deal and count down to that number and turn over
the last card dealt to reveal her card, the Ten of Clubs.
