In
1912 the Martinka brothers built a Spirit Cabinet for illusionist
Charles Carter. It is here that Mike Caveney's cover story
this month begins. In it you will learn the complete workings
of Carter's Spirit Cabinet in sufficient detail that, armed
with the hundreds of pounds of apparatus, several assistants,
and a stooge, you could perform it yourself.
We
follow up with what is a rarity in these pages these days:
a convention report. While many people think that this type
of coverage in a printed magazine is no longer relevant
because people discuss it online while it's happening, in
truth there's a difference. First, that online coverage
will likely cease to exist in coming years (websites vanish
all the time), and Genii has always been the magazine of
record in the magic world. Second, people's brief online
comments are not comparable to the full coverage we provide,
from opening to closing with coverage of every act and lecture.
With that said, I hope you enjoy the full report on Magic
Live!, which took place at the beginning of August, brought
to you by Dustin Stinett and Krystyn Lambert.
Jonathan
Friedman's column "WWPD" contains a particularly
intriguing trick this month that relies on a small mirror
and some scraps of paper. The included video in our digital
edition (or accessible via the QR code printed on the page)
enables you to vividly picture the effect.
*
Jim Steinmeyer uses the principle most well-known from "Powers
of Darkness" to tap into a spectator's thoughts in
"Conjuring." "Simpleton's Affinity"
is Jon Racherbaumer's name for a nearly sleight-free trick
of Don May's in this month's "Exhumations." *
There's a very tricky card box at work in David Regal's
"Dark Perception" in his column "Material
Concessions."
*
"Stage as Studio" finds Krystyn Lambert thinking
about patter with Armando Lucero.
*
Detectives are at work, trying to save 52 pasteboards from
underworld terror in John Bannon's effect "Gang Related."
It's a sandwich trick-you'll just have to deal with it.
*
No card tricks in "Magicana" this month, wherein
Robert Ramirez presents two clever effects from Mark Gibson.
There's video for both! * And of course we have our monthly
columns from Shawn McMaster, "Knights at The Magic
Castle," and Vanessa Armstrong, "The Eye."
Tie it all up in a bow with reviews of books, videos, and
tricks by Francis Menotti, Bill Wells, and Tom Dobrowolski.

4. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article #126
-------------------------------------
Message by Paul Stone (US)
I've always tried to keep all the promotional materials,
fliers, posters and photos from the hundreds of shows and
events that I've produced over the years.
Several
of my friends have for a long time encouraged me to write
a book about my life and the many amazing performers that
I've been fortunate to work with, and all this material
will prove invaluable in what is a rather daunting project.
But I'm pleased to say that I've now at least made a start!
As
I've began to wade through the boxes of photos, it is bittersweet,
as I remember with fondness so many talented entertainers,
mostly magicians or variety performers, and friends who
are sadly no longer with us.
Each
of them in their own individual way made their mark on the
world, and gave so much pleasure to generations of audiences
across the globe.
Last
week whilst I was in Los Angeles, I had the opportunity,
together with Diana Zimmerman, to visit the Hillside Memorial
Park and Mortuary in Culver City.
Why,
I can already hear you asking, would I do that?
The
answer is simple, I'm a massive, self-confessed fan of variety,
and I'd heard that Al Jolson was buried there. In fact,
not only was he buried there, but that he had an impressive
tomb, and I was intrigued to see it.
And
I wasn't disappointed! Leading up to Al Jolson's majestic
tomb was a spectacular six tier waterfall!
What
I hadn't expected however, and what made a huge impression
on me, was the scale of the Memorial Park. Immaculately
kept, there were literally thousands of grave stones, across
the several acre site, and also an impressive building housing
hundreds more.
It was a very humbling experience, and brought to mind a
clip from the TV series 'After Life' starring Ricky Gervais
in which he says 'Once you realise that you aren't going
to be around forever, you should treasure the years you've
got, and do everything you love with passion'. Definitely
a life lesson!
During
the pandemic, I wrote three books, one of which was titled
'MindSharp4Today' - 'Living in the moment'. This book features
quotes by numerous celebrities focusing on the importance
of enjoying every day. (FYI, it's available on Amazon!).
Speaking
of celebrities, the Hillside Memorial Park was the final
resting place of numerous famous names from the world of
entertainment.
In
this Memorial Park as well as Al Jolson who starred in the
classic movie 'The Jazz Singer' which was the first full
length movie with sound, and the songs 'Sonny Boy', My Mammy,
and Swanee', which became synonymous with his name, lies
the one and only Jack Benny, Star Trek's Leonard Nimoy,
TV Stars Lorne Greene and Michael Landon, two of the popular
Cartright family on 'Bonanza', and David Janssen from 'The
Fugitive'.
Other
notable names include Movie Star Shelley Winters, who won
two Oscars, one for her performance in the 'Diary of Anne
Frank', although I remember her from the 'Poseidon Adventure',
and Aaron Spelling, listed in the Guinness Book of World
Records as the most prolific TV Producer, with hit shows
like 'Starsky & Hutch', 'Love Boat, Fantasy Island and
'Charlie's Angels'.
One
interesting final note, Michael Landon's real name was Eugene
Maurice Orowitz. He chose his stage name by going through
the phone book! I suppose that's as good a way as any.

5. Gay Blackstone To Be Honored In Dallas
-------------------------------------------
Message by Dal Sanders MIMC*
The Society of American Magicians
National President 2013-2014
Breaking
News...The Society of American Magicians and the Texas Association
of Magicians have announced the selection of Gay Blackstone
as the Convention Honoree for the 2024 TAOM-SAM Combined
Convention in Dallas.
From
television magic to the grandest stages, Gay is a true entertainment
icon! As a powerhouse in the industry, she's worn many hats
- producer, director, consultant, lecturer, and author!
She's
not just any Hollywood figure, but a "Woman of Distinction"
recognized by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce! But that's
not all! Gay's magic touch extended to the iconic TV show,
Masters of Illusion, with her as the executive producer
in the epic 10 season run of the show!
Love
and magic intertwined in her life as she shared 23 enchanting
years with the legendary Harry Blackstone Jr., touring the
world, leaving audiences spellbound in theaters, casinos,
and arenas! Gay Blackstone's story is a mesmerizing blend
of Hollywood glitz, magical wonder, and timeless love! Gay
Blackstone is undeniably, a legacy in the art of magic.
Not
only will the TAOM-SAM Combined Convention celebrate Gay
Blackstone, but it will also celebrate the 100th Anniversary
of the Dallas Magic Club. This is a bit of a homecoming
for Gay because she was raised in North Texas and still
feels very close to her DFW roots. As an interesting side
note, Gay's future Father In Law was a frequent visitor
to the Dallas Magic Club from the 1930s through 1940s and
he always signed the DMC guest book with a self-caricature.
These drawings are still part of the club's treasures.
This
convention will also host the FISM North American Championship
of Magic. The path for a Magician from North America to
go to Italy and compete at the 2025 FISM World Championship
of Magic is to first compete in Dallas in 2024.
You
can learn more about Gay Blackstone at the TAOM-SAM Combined
Convention in Dallas from August 30-September 2, 2024. Don't
miss a moment of her extraordinary journey! Go to www.FISM-NACM
for more information.

6. Magic Museum Bellachini - Episode 48
---------------------------------------------
Message by Wittus Witt (Germany)
In
the next issue of my magazine "Magische Welt",
Hans-Werner Bäumer reports on the first mentalist in
the then GDR, Maru. He became very well-known and indeed
showed amazing experiments.
Maru
sold horoscopes and advertises "clairvoyant tricks"
beforehand, but he always emphasised that they were tricks.
Maru
has any number of spectators each pick up an object and
immediately names the objects.
The
spectators stand in a semicircle. In the middle, in the
second row, is the brother of the performer as a harmless
spectator. If he happens to see one of the objects, Maru
names it without the spectator having to open his hand.
The transmission takes place through a kind of deaf-mute
finger language.
Items
that the assistant has not seen are determined in the following
way: Maru takes the spectator's hand and holds it behind
his back (turning around). Then he lets the hand open, which
makes the assistant see the object and transmit it immediately.
The
spectators are asked to take their identity cards and open
them. Spectators who stand too far away so that the assistant
cannot see anything are taken out of the row by Maru and
placed in front of the centre of the semicircle (i.e. in
front of the assistant). Maru then gives the details of
the person, the number of the ID card and the like. For
spectators who are standing too far in the audience, Maru
takes the ID card and holds it open to the audience so that
his brother can read everything.
The
demonstrator has 30 to 40 numbers written on a blackboard
and, without having seen the numbers, names the resulting
large number (e.g. 587 quadrillions 709 trillions etc.).
In
an atlas, a spectator underlines the name of a city. The
presenter immediately names the city.
The
performance is very fluid, the delivery excellent. Both
(Maru and his brother) have their eyes everywhere and take
every chance.
After
the mental effects already mentioned, Maru "read"
letters, passages from books, receipts, etc., whereby the
tremendously rapid transmission is to be admired above all.
As the assistant (Maru's brother) stands in the second row
of the audience, the hand movements are covered and can
only be seen by the performer (through the gap between two
spectators in the first row). The performer usually holds
his hands in front of his face and watches the messages
through a slit between his hands or spread fingers.
Have
any of our readers ever heard of Maru. I would be very interested.
Until
next time

Message by Kent Cummins, Director (US)
Magic
Auction
"The
World-Famous Austin Magic Auction" has been called
the largest annual magic auction in the world! It started
in 1975, as a small part of a Mini-Convention in Austin,
Texas. IBM Ring 60 had started a Junior Ring, and decided
to put on an event which would allow junior magicians to
experience a magic convention.
There
was one stage show, one close-up show, one lecture, and
one magic dealer: a small magic auction conducted by John
Novak, a magician and escape artist, who brought a few tricks
from the Fun 'n Magic Shop in San Antonio, where he worked.
I
first attended the Mini-Convention in 1978, and the auction
seemed to have more potential than it was given. I asked
for permission to be the auctioneer the following year
and
the rest is history!
Each
year, the auction became a larger part of the Mini-Convention.
In 1981, we moved the Mini-Convention to my Austin Cabaret
Theatre. For the first time, more than 100 items (214) were
sold. A separate flyer was used to promote the auction as
part of the Mini-Convention.
By 1982, the auction had finally become more important than
the Mini-Convention, and it became a stand-alone event.
There were 421 items sold, producing a staggering sales
figure of $3,593.50, and a profit to the Ring of $383.46.
Admission was $1.00.
The
auction grew in size each year. The 1983 auction saw 551
items sold. I remained the only auctioneer, and I studied
each item before the event so that I could give it an effective
sales pitch. Even small close-up tricks were auctioned off
by me from the stage.
More auction history next week!

8. Pin Cracker! - John Carey #211
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
http://www.johncareymagic.co.uk/
Pin
cracker is another effect that comes into the category of
making your spectator the star. These kind of effects are
so much fun as you can step back at the end and let the
spectator take the accolades. A big clue is in the title
as to the effect we will achieve. A spectator, through forces
unseen opens up your phone via your secret PIN number that
they never knew at the outset!
In
addition to your mobile phone you will require ten blank
faced cards numbered from 0 to 9. In a pinch you could use
the back of your business cards. Let's imagine for the purposes
of this description that you PIN number is 3109. Set the
top four cards of the packet in 1390 order from
the top down. The other numbers order is unimportant. Casually
display the numbers and then turn the packet face-down.
Deal four cards sloppily into a face-down packet one at
a time and then mix the remaining cards, drop a few on top
of the tabled cards and then deal off the last two or three
and square up. "There's actually so many ways of mixing
numbers. This way is called the randomizer shuffle."
After
you say that you will mix the cards again using Paul Curry's
brilliant deal/mix swindle. Deal a single card to the table
and then openly transpose the next two cards and drop them
on top of the tabled card. Continue by mixing pairs and
dealing single cards until the packet has
been exhausted. This beautiful ruse simply reverses the
order of the cards. Ask your helper to pick up the packet
and walk and talk her through this process, them having
the free choice of dealing single cards or mixing pairs.
Finally have them pick up the packet and deal a row of four
cards from your left to right. Then repeat that and drop
the remaining card down on the next packet.
"Numbers
are everywhere. We have house numbers, registration numbers,
lottery numbers and PIN numbers. From that packet of numbers
you mixed so thoroughly I would like you to form a PIN number
in your mind." Ask your helper to look at the top card
of the packet on your left and peek the number and remember
it. Then have them repeat this with the top card of the
next three packets, and ask them to store that randomly
generated PIN number in their mind. The great news is that
this will be 3109 in this example- our PIN number.
Take
out your mobile phone and open the screen so that the pin
activation function is in view. "Be honest sir, we've
never met right? Please type in that random PIN number that
resides purely in your mind into my phone. Impossible!!!"
They type in the number and amazingly have cracked your
PIN code. Change it after the gig if you so wish...

Message by Greg Wilson (US)
Hi,
This is Greg Wilson, son of Mark and Nani, and I am so happy
to share with you my new website, MagicAuctionWarehouse.com
Over
the years, Nani and I have had many requests for some of
the thousands of one-of-a-kind items that she and dad amassed
over their careers, and assessing the best use of space
for the warehouse going forward we thought a series of auctions
seemed like the best way to share some of the amazing parts
of their collection fairly as we look to make room for what's
coming up in the years ahead!
For
those of you who don't know, for the last thirty years Mark
and Nani's career has been housed in a 4,000 sq + warehouse
near their home in Valencia, California. It has thousands
and thousands of items from all different phases of their
showbiz life, dating back to Nani's WWII USO costumes and
dad's childhood magic. It's nearly impossible to describe,
much less catalog all at one time.
So
as we go through the building we're assembling everything
we think you might find interesting and valuable into different
collections so that we can host a few special auctions ourselves
- ensuring the best customer service for those of you we've
been lucky enough to build tremendous relationships with.
